But we did have an earlier issue that we want to get to. About an hour ago, crews actually cleared. This scene is a deadly scene on westbound 580 near harbor way in richmond. This is video from earlier. At approximately 125, the chp says someone was walking on the freeway. That person was then hit and killed by a driver. Electricians spent hours trying to restore power. That happened at 1215 this morning. Classes are expected to resume this morning at Christopher High School in gilroy, after a student was arrested for stabbing another student. It happened yesterday. Staff put the school on lockdown after a fight broke out between the students around lunchtime. This video was sent to abc seven by a classmate. You can see that knife is there on the floor of that boys locker room. Thats where the fight started. Investigators say one student pulled out a knife and stabbed the other student. That victim was taken to a local hospital, and the district is now Offering Counseling for students at a nearly 90,000 heist. Thats what Contra Costa County fair organizers say happened outside this antioch bank around 2 a. M. Monday. They say two fair workers left. Fair grounds went about a mile and a half to the bank to make the deposit. When someone robbed them of the cash. Abc seven news spoke with the president of the county fair board of directors. He says he was not the one making the day to day calls at the fair, and now hes demanding answers. You never send an unarmed citizen to a bank at a wee hours of the day, when the banks not even open and expect us to make a deposit. He says the robbery could impact the fairs music headliners and animal attractions in the future. Police have not released any information about the suspect or if this crime was planned or random. This morning we are hearing from former Oakland Police chief laurent armstrong about why he wants a seat on oakland city council. If you are watching abc seven mornings yesterday, you heard about his plans to enter the race. Mid morning. He did it walking into oakland city hall, filling out the paperwork. Armstrong is a west oakland native and now lives in district seven, and hes running for the at Large Council seat, which represents the entire city. I could serve beyond, you know, law enforcement, beyond the Police Department that i could continue to give back to my community. Thats given so much to me. Armstrong joins a race with eight other candidates. He says his Top Priorities are public safety, homelessness, improving oaklands image. You may remember armstrong was fired from his job as police chief more than a year ago. Now he is suing the city for wrongful termination, but says the lawsuit will not impact this race. Today, oakland mayor shengtao is set to reveal her plans to fix a growing budget crisis in her city. A key component is expected to be the landmark deal to sell off the citys stake in the coliseum site. We first told you about this massive deal yesterday morning. Its worth more than 100 million. Abc seven News Reporter ryan curry got a closer look at what the future of the coliseum could look like, swinging for the fences on a project that could forever change the coliseum grounds. Chris dobbins, who used to sit on the coliseum board, now runs save oakland sports. He believes oakland should not just be a minor league town, but after having been having, you know, professional football, professional basketball, winning a number of championships in oakland to going back to just having minor league teams. No. So how do you get an nfl team to move back to oakland, or an nba team to play at the arena again . Dobbins says its not easy. Now kumasi those tornadoes were all reported in the upper midwest in just a 24 hour period. The worst damage is in the small town of greenfield, iowa. The Department Said it would also provide an update on its internal investigation surrounding the case. Police arrested scheffler after he attempted to steer around traffic congestion. Now the traffic backup was caused by a deadly crash that morning. Scheffler faces several charges, including Second Degree assault of a police officer. Investigators say his car dragged the police officer, who tried to get him to stop. California could extend the statute of limitations for prosecution of Domestic Violence from five years to 15 years. This proposal is gaining attention again after disturbing videos released showing Sean Diddy Combs physically assaulting his former girlfriend on hotel Surveillance Video back in 2016, the l. A. District Attorneys Office said earlier this week it cant prosecute combs for that assault because its outside the statute of limitations. The new bill was introduced by state senator susan rubio. On the peninsula, the mayor of redwood city is taking action after a fire at a recycling facility sent the smoke as far away as santa clara county. This happened at ss metal on the redwood city port around three yesterday afternoon. Workers next door say they had to put on respirators because of all the smoke. Abc seven news has been following incidents involving sims metal for years. In 2013, two fires broke out at the recycling plant, prompting Public Officials to issue more than a dozen Safety Measures in order to prevent future fires. Its something mayor jeff g says might have to happen again. Im disappointed that it happened again, especially since it happened the first time when i was serving as mayor. In a statement, sims metal said the health and welfare of the community is an immediate priority. How bad is your commute . Hayward Oakland San Francisco just ranked in the top 30 cities when it comes to the worst commutes, and you can see all three are averaging about an hour a day or more than 240 hours a year. Thats ten days a year. There is some good news, though. Some commute times are going down in the bay area. The u. S. Census Bureau American Community Survey looked at the top ten cities where commutes have decreased from 2012 to 2022. Fremont was number one in the nation, with drivers saving about 27 hours a year over the past decade. San francisco came in at number six with a 17 hour drop, and in sunnyvale, drivers have shaved off 14 hours of commute time. A lot changed in the bay area between 2012 and 2022. The biggest thing, of course, was, the pandemic. And that introduced, the widespread acceptance of remote work. John goodwin from the metropolitan Transportation Commission says more express lanes and continued emphasis on Public Transportation have also likely contributed to lighter commutes. But i will say one tip i do have is that you know, the olympics are going to be in paris this summer. Flights are very inexpensive right now to go to paris directly after the games. If your Holiday Travel plans involve a car, there are some specific times youre going to want to know about. A man is breaking down the best and the worst times to leave the house over the next couple of days. Im hi, reggie. Bay area roads will certainly be busy. Triple a is noting convenience and flexibility are two main reasons so many people plan to travel by car here at home. Eastbound i80, San Francisco to the area near highway 37 specifically is expected to see the most congestion this Holiday Weekend. If you can avoid the east shore freeway, especially on friday at 11 a. M, it will be a mess during that peak, traffic period. What would typically be about an hour drive that stretch encompassing the bay bridge, emeryville hercules, American Canyon is likely to take an upwards of one hour and 25 minutes, plus, triple a is giving us the worst and best travel times over the next five days. If youre leaving today, take off before 11 a. M. Or after 7 p. M. Tomorrow. So hit the road before 11 a. M. Or after 8 p. M. And if you plan to return on monday, avoid traveling from 3 to 7 p. M. Thanks, samantha. Developing news in the east bay. One person has died after a mobile home fire in pleasanton. Fire Officials Say the fire started right around midnight on vineyard avenue. When crews got there, the person was trapped in the home. Firefighters were not able to get to the victim because the fire spread too fast. A second person was able to escape. They were treated for minor injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation. A surge of california Highway Patrol officers into the east bay has led to hundreds of arrests and stolen vehicles being recovered, according to the Governors Office. Chp has helped to recover more than 700 stolen cars and made more than 350 arrests since february. Thats when the state began tempoorary searches in alameda county. Theres no word on how many people have been charged or convicted, though. The Governors Office says the arrests are linked to organized crime, carjackings and other major felonies. This morning, a plea to Governor Newsom to change his mind. Mayors from some of californias biggest cities asking the governor to keep funding for a Grant Program that provides money to local governments to fight homelessness. The Homeless Housing assistance and prevention program, or hap, has helped 42,000 californians find long term housing. Funding for the program will be cut after this year, as part of the governors plan to balance the states budget, San Francisco mayor london breed says the money is critical. It helps fund Navigation Centers and 950 of the citys shelter beds. Locally, our street homelessness has reached a ten year low, but our family homelessness has increased. We need all of the resources we can to address these issues off the street in san jose, mayor matt mehan says happy funding helped 2500 people find housing and another 6700 avoid falling into homelessness.
