I feel like thats always been how ive played, and ive never changed, and i think thats just contagious for the rest of my team. I motivate my teammates on the court mainly by leading by example and showing them how to get it done. Nil, name, image, likeness, enacted in 2021. Players cant be paid directly to perform, but they can make money off their name, image, and likeness. One of the biggest shifts in college athletics, you had these players that make a lot of money for the universities, and a lot of money is made off of these players. They couldnt make any money for themselves. And then, 2021 hits, and everything changes, and you finally give these players an opportunity to not only put themselves in a better situation financially for themselves and their family but to also grow their brand. My names caitlin, and this is nike tech. Before nil, the narrative of the ncaa was we start allowing players to make money its gonna hurt the womens game. Women are getting paid now, and they are not only competitive with men. In many instances, they are outearning men. mellow rhythmic music kiki was the First College athlete to have the jordan brand deal, and thats groundbreaking. women chattering three, two, one. women screaming [team] kiki, kiki, kiki. Yeah, kiki. Yeah. Nil has illuminated for people how valuable female athletes are in the marketplace. Honestly to have her own pe, im just so proud. Like, that is so cool. I just cant. Goin to college in la, i think the opportunities here are really different than if i had gone to a school in a smaller town. I mean, just the market of la, all the people that come through here, its opened up a lot of new opportunities for me. You know how i did like the deal with beats . [friend] yeah, yeah. So, were gonna go to like the beats studio, and it was so cool. They created like a custom headphones, basically, for me. My hair in the ponytail and the poof is kind of like my signature thing. I really like it. I think the nil environment and experience has been really excellent for her as a sort of a fouryear long kind of business internship, requiring her to think about who she is and how she wants to communicate who she is. My dreams are to use my platform to impact others and be more than just a basketball player. Thank you. International players like kamilla, theyre not allowed to do work with the student visa that they are granted. Most of the things you do for nils classified as that, and so therefore they cant do that without the possibility of having their visa revoked. Money for me is accomplishing my dreams because my first dream to come play basketball here, it was to give a better life to my family. If she had nils, life would be totally different for her. It is a big disadvantage, but we just try like to not be focused on it and play and and give the best that she can. All right, we comin. Lets go ladies. mellow Christmas Music [game announcer] raiders and chiefs about to kick off, and before they do we say happy holidays to you. people chattering we went to the chiefsraiders game on christmas. If we were playin football, then she was gonna try to play football. If it was capture the flag or kick the can outside in the yards, then thats what shed be doin, and shed be running after us, running from us. They put her in a snow suit and throw water balloons at her. I mean, they were just awful to her. brent laughing [blake] we have nothing to do all day. Its hot here and humid, and she has like all of her snow gear on so that she doesnt feel getting hit, but she just wanted to play with us. I just wanted to do everything that they did. On the day my older brother learned to ride his bike with no training wheels, i did too because i was so mad that like he could do it, but i couldnt. [brent] princess. Caitlin had a small pink bike, and we really hadnt taught her how to ride the bike, but we were teaching blake. So, i like got out my pink bike, and im like, mom, take my training wheels off. Lets go. [anne] up, put your other foot up. Oh cate, now that blakes learned to ride, caties givin it a shot, and shes doing quite well. If my brother can do this without training wheels, i can do this without training wheels. [anne] cate. [brent] there she goes, yeah. Look at that. Pedal, pedal, there. There it is. [anne] keep pedaling. Wow, look at that. Catie, great job. Everything had to be a competition all the time. kids laughing colin and caitlin, they were playin basketball, the two of them somehow, and it always gets physical down in the basement. I remember i was playing good defense. She missed a shot. I like was getting so angry and pissed that i like just chucked him into the wall, and it was like the corner. And he like put his hand back and like went like this, and there was just like, just blood everywhere. And then, sure enough, here comes caitlin up the stairs with colin, and hes holding his head. They get in the car. They go up the street. Kid gets like five staples in his head. She just had that fire, that competitiveness, and wasnt afraid of showing that to other people. crowd cheering referee whistle [game announcer] another sold out crowd files into Carverhawkeye Arena on the university of iowa campus. The main attraction, Caitlin Clark, of course, and the fourthranked team in the country. Michigan states really good. Theyre not ranked, but theyre a really, really great solid basketball team. They played us really well. crowd cheering we could never figure out a way to pull away. [game announcer] 23 seconds to go. All tied up at 73. [game announcer] gotta hold it for the last shot here, and iowas just gotta let Caitlin Clark be Caitlin Clark. Its a tie game, but im feeling really confident. Pressure is something you embrace as a competitor. I think thats always kind of been who i am. I love the big moments. I love the big games. Its the the desire to take the shot. She wants to take the shot. Thats just Caitlin Clark. [game announcer] i think everyone in america knows who its going to. [game announcer] anticipation here. Davis, time winding down. Clark for the win. crowd cheering oh, she does it time and time again and walks off with the w. No one expects more out of her than her. It doesnt matter if shes playing colin and i in the basement, if shes playin final four games, in a National Championship, to her its all the same. And its part of why the biggest of moments dont have like much effect on her at all. [game announcer] that is the most Caitlin Clark way to win a game. laughing logo threes, its her signature. [game announcer] iowa wins 7673, 11 wins in a row. Gotta make it close so i can do that. [game announcer] she put up a 40 piece, eight threes, and walks off with the game winner. [sports reporter] 7673, the hawkeyes win an exciting game to start 2024. people chattering we win at the buzzer. It wasnt our best game. It wasnt our best game. No, certainly not. But hey, all that matters is we won. It was exciting. It was exciting. I wanted to keep everybody entertained a little bit. Yeah, that was the game plan. Keep everyone on their toes. Yeah, what the scouting report said. Keep it close. Make everybody entertained. Hit a buzzer beater. [jada] it was clutch. [caitlin] all right, we play rutgers tomorrow so. [jada] in new jersey. Our coaches were kind enough to bring us to new york city cause a lot of people havent been here before. Like me. Hey is it your guys first time in new york city . [teammates] yes. Everybody but me. People are in bars in new york city, and theyre asking, hey, can you turn on the iowa game . Theres that girl, that number 22, that i wanna see. [crowd] Caitlin Clark. Guys, no. [crowd member] come on. crowd cheering [coach bluder] when caitlins light shines, it shines on all of us. [woman] i may be inspired in the middle depending on time. Ill let you know. [woman] fair enough, all right. women chattering [coach staley] usc, take it away. All right. What did we see in the film yesterday, what we dropped in there . What were some of your observations . Coming from the east coast i never really had anything against usc so i didnt think too much of them, but then i talked to all like my cali teammates and friends. And theyre like, i hate sc so much. I never like really understood it honestly until this year. Okay, stop. Theyre not very good in transition and gettin matched up, okay . Just because theyre in front of you does not mean theyre guarding you. I feel like theyre kind of, i dunno, kind of cocky. We just dont like each other, dont match well. Jujus goin wherever she is. So whoever juju is guarding, you have to know when the ball goes inside, you need to be calling for the ball cause she is going no matter who shes guarding. mellow music [game announcer] a lot of buzz around at usc. Theyve got a new arrival. [game announcer] they sure do, and thats number 12 juju watkins. Shes a superstar. We knew the first time we played against her, especially as a freshman, like we could pressure her. [game announcer] the crosstown showdown has never been this big. Fans have been lined up outside a sold out Pauley Pavilion for hours. The first time that ucla has sold out Pauley Pavilion for a Womens Basketball game. [kiki] our first game against em, we came out really strong. [game announcer] kiki rides and the crowd explodes. We kind of took them out of the rhythm, played incredible defense on juju. [game announcer] thats a block. Nothin coming easy for juju watkins in this game. Uclas been impeccable in their defense so far. We just turned them over. We pressed them. We were just in control of that entire game. [game announcer] and there you go. Ucla remains undefeated and takes down southern california. These two teams will play again january 14th. Anytime we can deny juju the basketball, we wanna do that. Everybody wants to win. What does it mean to us . Raise your hand. I watched their little presser yesterday, and they talked about its time for a new queen. players laughing they said they hated our little blue gym, and that when they come, keep your hand up. How can you . Keep your hand up. And when we go to their place, they want the boos, and its time to initiate a new queen. Its gonna require a little bit more. Take your hand and just stretch it all the way up. Thats a little bit more. One more sprint, one more slide, one more communication, a little bit more from everybody is whats gonna get this done. inspirational music i think a lot of the criticism and doubt that we get is, comes from like lack of experience because were not a school that has been there. We hear a lot about none of their players have played in the final four. crowd shouting [game announcer] crosstown showdown part two. Fans have been lined up down the street for hours. Its a top 10 matchup, usc hosting ucla. Ucla comes in undefeated, the second ranked team in the nation. So much at stake. [coach close] come in. Kick their ass. players cheering here we go, rebound. One, two, three, rebound. pa announcer yelling crowd cheering [game announcer] akan rockwell gets the tip. Trojans on their way. crowd cheering they came out swinging, and we werent prepared. And we didnt respond. When you have a very high achieving group, sometimes you can get a cautious group. Timeout. referee whistle tweeting theres too many mental errors. Were not gonna do this by ourselves. We gotta do this by execution together. I actually really challenge kiki with that a lot. Like are you wanting the play to happen to you, or are you gonna go make the play . Go, kiki, go. Her work ethic, her talent, her selflessness, thats all great stuff, but she needs to be our leader. For us to go where we need to go, she needs to grow into that. crowd cheering [game announcer] look at that one from watkins, juju watkins, great finish. [pa announcer] yeah, juju. [game announcer] kiki rice, tryin to get it in. Its hands of bigby. Juju watkins extra gear finish. crowd cheering theyre a dominant rebounding team. They havent dominated the boards. Theyve turned it over left and right. Offensively theyve got nothing going on. We cant turn the ball over 15 times in the first half and expect to win against a good team. We really put ourself at a disadvantage. You got your asses kicked. 15 frickin turnovers . They want it more than you. Theyre tougher than you. Theyre more together than you. How does that feel . How do you like them apples . Thats the truth. Dont point fingers at anybody else. Point it right back at you, and do somethin different. The most urgent team wins, and they are so much more urgent than you. Well see what you got. [player] lets go. [player] hey, come on, lets go, lets go. referee whistle tweeting crowd cheering mellow inspirational music [game announcer] four seconds, kikis gotta shoot. Just a lid on the bucket for ucla. Watkins all alone. Shes fun to watch. referee whistle tweeting [game announcer] osborne, tough and one. Quick pass off. Theres the finish. Lead cut to eight. Weve got to go right at juju here. [game announcer] nothin coming easy for the bruins. In the Fourth Quarter, there was like a jump ball on the side. crowd cheering referee whistle tweeting [game announcer] whoa oh. Kind of got tangled up with one of the girls on sc, and she like kind of pushed me, hit me on my face. And i went back up to her cause im like, youre not gonna just push me, hit me in my face, and im not gonna do anything. I got a tech, and i fouled out of the game. Intentional files on both kiki and the other player. We gotta get a sub for kiki. Its really hard to connect to someone whos not willing to be vulnerable, but shes growing in that. Im really challenging her to have confrontational moments and to have vulnerable moments. buzzer blaring [game announcer] trojans, theyre gonna hand ucla their first loss of the season. somber music [coach close] i dont get the opportunity to win a game against a top 10 team that that could mean more to the other team than it could mean to us. I try to keep telling her. Im not asking you to be a rah rah leader. I dont think thats her personality, but sometimes an increase in vulnerability in an appropriate situation just deepens and increases your influence. Together. One, two, three, together, together. You made a cow actually its a piggy bank. My inspiration to start saving. How about a more solid way to save . Im listening. Well, bmo helps get your savings habit into shape with a cash reward, every month you save. Both cash reward . And theres a cash bonus when you open a new Checking Account to get you started. Wow. Anything you cant do . mugs. Bmo [game announcer] a lot of value in this matchup. The last two Womens National championship winners will face off. Ninthranked lsu is gonna host the Number One Team in the country in South Carolina. Gamecocks are currently the only Unbeaten Team left in division i [assistant coach] all right, tell me about how were playin reese. [coach staley] yall probably dont wanna, you know, touch her, but the more you touch her, the more shes gotta fight over a 40minute period. South carolina versus lsu is gonna obviously be a big matchup. Both teams have very talented players. They both can hoop. crowd cheering [game announcer] angel reese is just an incredible force inside for lsu, dominates in the paint. She is a fiery catalyst for the lus tigers. crowd cheering [assistant coach] were gonna try to do a whole lot of different things. Angel will switch. If shes up that high, go at her, attack her feet. [coach staley] cant guard you, kamilla. Cant. Cant. They was the defending National Champions, and they have something that we want. We want to be the National Champions this year. gentle piano music every time that were having shootaround, that we have not practiced before a game, she thinks about the plays that she want to run in the game. I want plays in which our play, our bigs, are coming from out to in, stuff to where they gotta come out and play, all right . I think she respects me in that she knows what i want from her, like what i need from her. And sometimes when im demanding, i know she doesnt like that about me. Here we go, lets go. Im hot. [kamilla] hey, i got it. [coach staley] what are yall doin on the backside . Oh, , thats the wrong player, huh . Sorry, that was me. [coach staley] come on. When i first got here, i didnt even like to put extra work in. Aint nobody had angel. Nobody had angel on that backside. Who . She used to come to me like, tell me kamilla, you can be a great player. You just gotta believe in yourself. You just gotta stay confident. Good, get it. Good. Do i want a better relationship with her . I do, but im okay bein somewhat of the enemy. Ill eat that so she can be the number one pick. Loosen up, kamilla. [kamilla] ah. [coach staley] loosen up. Sorry. Loosen up. Loosen up. Go out there. Loosen up. Fight, fight, cause thats whats gonna, youre gonna have to do that tomorrow night. Youre gonna have to fight. suspenseful music i need kamilla to tap into. Theres a monster in there, like, she just really doesnt know it yet. Im a taurus. Shes a taurus. We dont like to lose, and we dont like to look bad. jet engine humming its time now, guys. Just put an end to all this hype about whos the best team. They have somethin that we want. We want the National Championship. Theyre just in the way right now. Lets go and do what we need to do, each and every one of you. When i say end, effort never dies. [players] whoa. players cheering and applauding [game announcer] number one South Carolina, number nine lsu, here we go from baton rouge. [game announcer] people have come from hundreds of miles away, and this crowd is loud, electric, and ready to rock. One, two, three. Together. Courtside seats were going for in the thousands. It outrated the boston celticsmiami heat. crowd cheering are you kidding me . Womens basketball South Carolinalsu is outrating a good nba game . Whats up kim . How you doin . Girl. How you doin . They can say whatever the hell they want. It dont get no better than what you and i put on this floor. And dont you ever forget it. [game announcer] tonight, a matchup between the last two National Champions, South Carolina and lsu. I was a little nervous because i knew they was gonna play us hard, but i feel like nothing is impossible, you know . dramatic music [game announcer] certainly a matchup to keep an eye on is angel reese on Kamilla Cardoso. [game announcer] here is reese comin up with a steal as she fronted cardoso. That three is good. Aneesah morrow fired up already. Not every individual will have the responsibility of anchorin a team. Its only bestowed on those who can handle it. I told kamilla, i dont mean to throw that on you, but i do mean to throw that on you because it is time. Yo, you gotta want it. You gotta want it. There are games that you see her play, and shes unstoppable. And then there are games where she kind of floats, and maybe we dont hear from her for a little while. [game announcer] reese comes up with the o board. Van lith, got it. crowd cheering got a three, plus the foul away from the ball. I mean, kamilla is just bein pushed around. I gotta get kamilla out. [game announcer] well, Kamilla Cardoso in that First Quarter did not score. dramatic music continues i know she really wanted to play well, but sometimes when you wanna play so well it almost works against you. [game announcer] this game is gonna be won or lost on whether or not Kamilla Cardoso shows up because right now angel reese has her number. crowd cheering [pa announcer] angel reese. Its us thats killin us. It aint them. Defense is decent. Sometimes things happen to throw your habit off, and then you know, mentally you gotta shake it off and get right back in. inspirational music [game announcer] reese gets swallowed up by cardoso. Gives a little stare afterward. One of my favorite memories from the game was when like i had a block on her two seconds after she blocked me. And its just basketball. We just out here to ball out and win games. [game announcer] heres feagin into cardoso. Cardoso cuts in for two. Its a one point game. [coach staley] let make a layup, guys, okay . Lets make a three. Lets make a layup. crowd cheering [game announcer] a chance to take the lead. Cardoso lays it in. South carolina, its first lead. Here comes johnson blowing into the front court, and thats number five on reese. Angel reese just picked up her fifth foul. dramatic music crowd cheering heres paopao. Hall will take that one. And hit. In the corner, hall. Another three. upbeat music and that should do it. The gamecocks remain undefeated. South carolina is going to escape victorious. You know who you are. Yes. players cheering lets go. I know we didnt play our best game. We didnt. Kamilla, you hit big buckets when we needed big buckets. You did. players applauding you cant. You cant dog pound on yourself for the negative and never come out of it and see the positive. You cant do it, okay, cause itll with your mentals, and you cant. players cheering and applauding lets go, nobody. Wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Angel aint get her doubledouble. players cheering kamilla was who we needed her to be in the second half. The game that we played at lsu, its gonna be a norm for us. We got other fan bases commenting on the game. We got nba players. We got Robin Roberts commenting. We won. [assistant coach] together on three. One, two, three. Together. mellow music [reporter] Caitlin Clark continues to transcend the program in ways that once seemed impossible. For the first time in the history of iowa Womens Basketball, every game for the season is sold out. [reporter] the average Purchase Price is 521. The highest ticket on stubhub is over 4,000. [reporter] the Caitlin Clark invasion officially took over evanston tonight. Caitlin clark and the hawkeyes, this is the 11th time, folks, theyve sold out on the road this season. crowd cheering weve played in a sold out environment almost every single game, home or away. [game announcer] from the banks of the Olentangy River in columbus, ohio, welcome to sunday big ten basketball, as the 181 iowa hawkeyes, winners of 15 in a row, get set to face off against a hot ohio state team. Goin and playin in other peoples environments, it can be tough. gentle ominous music when theres 15,000 people on the road cheerin against you, its a lot different than 2000. It just adds a whole nother element. [game announcer] to find the shot that you want. One possession game, mcmahon, okay. crowd cheering [game announcer] look at those long strides. To keep this ranking, to perform at this utmost level every single night, and that can wear on you. [game announcer] did it all afternoon. Gets her own rebound. Pumped up cotie mcmahon. crowd cheering give and go opportunity. Davis keeps it. Yeah, they led by 12 with under nine minutes to go in the game, and iowa just didnt play well down the stretch. [game announcer] 10 to go on the shot clock. Taylor. crowd cheering oh, four quarters just wasnt enough. So, we gotta keep on playin. referee whistle tweeting overtime in columbus tied at 83. referee whistle tweeting crowd cheering iowa being patient. Blocked by mikulasikova. Mikulasikova holding the follow through. Thats big time. crowd cheering somber piano music this ohio state buckeye team, and they have taken down the number two team in the country. [game announcer] Caitlin Clark with 45 points. When we lost the game, i think we were all kind of shocked. And then, were leaving the court, and people just start coming onto the court. We had never been a part of Something Like that. [game announcer] as the hawkeyes suffer their first loss in big ten play. Ohio state fans stormed the court. Caitlins comin off the court. She gets hit by a fan and falls to the ground. I was just trying to get out of there, and didnt see her, and kind of collided pretty good. And then, we kind of just both fell over. Kind of scary. Could have caused a pretty serious injury to me, and knocked the wind out of me, but luckily my teammates kind of picked me up and got me off the court. And their ad already came and apologized to me. So, i really appreciate that, and you know, thats just what comes with the territory. Because caitlin is who she is, the reaction to anything that happens to caitlin is gonna be polarizing. Fans do not belong on the court ever. The nba, major league baseball, they dont do it. When somebody gets hurt, were gonna get serious about it. I think we all have seen the Caitlin Clark effect on the ratings and the money and how much tickets are and everything. Can we not get a somebody surrounding Caitlin Clark when maybe a bunch of ohioans are chargin . Did she get a technical . Who . [man] Caitlin Clark for that flop. Flop . Whoa. When youre the best, people wanna tear em down. They wanna find something wrong with her. And that one just became, oh, she ran into the fan on purpose and faked it. Like, thats the craziest thing ive ever heard. Did she flop . She accentuated the contact after. laughing she threw her hands. I mean, she flopped. Everybody has an opinion. People thought i ran into her on purpose, which, why would i ever do that . I dont know. But, yeah, it definitely gets annoying. Theres gonna be people that love you. Theres gonna be people that hate you. Theres gonna be a lot of people that wanna see you fail. If youre going to break a record, to me, if its legitimate, you have to break that record in the same amount of time that that player set it. Nobodys takin 40 shots a game like you see across the country. Were not that kind of team. I hold great, or the levels of immortality or the pantheon, to when you win championships. You can not go down as the greatest College Basketball player of all time without winning a National Championship. You cant do it. You can stay off twitter. You can stay off instagram. You can mute people, block people, hide comments. It doesnt matter. Eventually youre gonna see something. She sees what people say. I dont think anybody can understand the pressure shes under, the microscope shes under. Do i think im polarizing . Yeah, probably. I feel like the way i like play the game, the way i carry myself, the things i can do on the court, its probably a lot of things that a lot of people havent seen before, specifically on the womens side of basketball. Whether theyre rooting for her, or theyre rooting against her, that transcendence is what the game has needed. traffic whooshing i leave to brazil on february 5th to go play for my National Team. Were gonna be competing for the olympics. gentle suspenseful music if we recruit an international player, were gonna give them an opportunity to play for their National Team because we want them to be olympians.
