To who is behind it and why. Good evening, im j. R stone. Police say this investigation is centered around at least four different locations in the town of petaluma. More than 30 cars were broken into from last night into early this morning, with a variety of different personal items stolen tonight. Abc seven News Reporter ryan curry is in petaluma, where neighbors are concerned. Shards of glass all over the pavement. Its all that remains after someone broke into a car here at the petaluma outlets. But according to police, this was not the only one. Its actually one of over 30 breakins from saturday night. Petaluma police say they started getting calls saturday night about car break ins. Once they started investigating, they learned it was a spree happening all over the city. Theyre going to break into it. Whether you put a sign in the window or you roll your windows down, theyre going to do something to your car. So its just disappointing. Its supposed to be a nice area, but people going to do, people going to do the outlet mall was one location behind this apartment complex was another. Its one thing when its just a random situation, but when its happening all over and its consistently getting worse, i it makes you wonder where you can live and be safe. Debbie asked us not to use her last name, but her street on sunday was full of this. Cars missing windows. I noticed coming up this part of the walk that every car on this side had its window smashed in and the middle console was up like someone had looted each of the vehicles. Police are asking the public to offer up any Surveillance Video to try and figure out who did this. The only problem at here in front of the apartment complex and the parking lot, we didnt see any cameras. From a house perspective, theres no cameras on the street because youre people are constantly going up and down the street. So your camera would video that every time and youd end up with long videos. But i think the Apartment Building should maybe think about investing in some in some cameras. Police say this kind of spree has happened in neighboring cities as well. Find out whoever did this and make sure that they are held to account in petaluma. Right here on abc seven. Building a better bay area is our main mission here at abc seven, and that means keeping watch over our climate and environment. A new study now suggests an extreme weather event may have taken a deadly toll on a key population of whales. Abc seven news weather anchor Spencer Christian has more on heating oceans and the humpbacks. Humpback whales may put on a majestic show off our coast, but deep at sea, theyve been falling prey to a changing ocean environment that could be a threat in the future. A new study now estimates that some 7000 humpbacks may have starved to death in the Northern Pacific, with their population dropping as much as 20 over roughly a decade. What that implies is either lower rate of reproduction or mortality rates are up, or both, and i suspect its a combination of both. And so the paper argues that its a basically starvation. Peter roopnarine is with the California Academy of Sciences Institute of biodiverse city. While he was not involved in the study, he is very familiar with an ocean phenomenon that may have played a deadly role a marine heat wave known as the blob, so strong its believed to have increased temperatures in the Northern Pacific by as much as ten degrees for several years, devastating the ocean food chain. Fewer resources, less food. All of the consumers out there are competing for this food, and theyre both. The whales now are competing directly with those other organisms. Like many of these fish, ive seen humpback whales lunge feeding out here. Gray whales passing through from time to time. Becca lane studies risk factors for whales at the Marine Mammal center in marin county. Shes quick to point out that humpbacks frequenting the bay area coast belonged to a different Migration Group from the Northern Pacific population profiled in the study. But she says warming Ocean Temperatures from alaska to california have also strained the food chain for populations here, including humpbacks and gray whales, often pushing them closer to our shores. We are seeing them try to have more flexibility in what prey they go after, which often means that they come further inshore, which means that theyre further or theyre closer to human interactions like vessel strike and entanglement. Lane, along with a number of other groups, have helped to develop Warning Systems designed to keep coastal whales safer from ship strikes. While out on the deeper ocean, researchers believe changes related to Climate Change could increase stresses on humpback populations in the future. These anomalies, like the blob, these heat waves, they are predicted to and this seems to be coming true, predicted to become more intense, perhaps increasing the urgency of understanding and combating the effects of Climate Change in San Francisco. I think just the alligators. Im sorry, but you cant believe youd have Something Like that in his house. And then youre saying that he would let neighbors pet the alligator . Yeah, i believe so. Yeah, that just sounds. Youre really not supposed to go in their water habitat with them. So thats a little off there. Yeah.
