The purpose of this academic competition was to prepare blind and visually impaired students for college and future jobs. Our tony cabrera has today so cal strong. The braille challenge is pretty much the spelling bee taken to the next level with some of the smartest kids in socal who are blind and visually impaired. Its an academic competition, and students are tested on reading comp, spelling speed and accuracy, charts and graphs, and proofreading. The contest is held every year at the Braille Institute in los angeles, in hopes of braille literacy so that they can go to college and eventually have a career. I graduated from uc berkeley in 2018, and all throughout my college career, i relied on my real textbooks. I took math classes that required chart and graph reading. I i used braille after college wn i got my first job, tiffany started participating in the braille challenge when she was in first grade. So its become more than ju a competition. Its a reunion with lifelong friends. When i first started as a first grader, i did not realize that there were so many other visually impaired students outside of my little bubble at my Elementary School who als read braille here. Braille is cool and is something that gives them equa access to things that everybody else has accs to. I kind of like just friendly events like this and reading aille. I like that its accessible to the to the blind, and that we can actually read somethin those who made it through the prelims will go to the finals this summer at usc. New this morng, a massive fire at an auto shop in van nuys. This happened on van nuy boulevard near valerio street, just after midnight. Fire firefighters close to a half hour to put the flames out. Nobody was hurt and the cause of that fire now being investigated. A man died after he was taken to Police Custody in fullerton. This happened early yesterday morning at a mcdonalds near brookhurst and orangethorpe fullerton. Police say they responded to a disturbanccall and found a manctin erratically. The reporting party was the manager of the business, and she was concerned for the safety of her employees that were g to be arriving at work. Police officers claim that suspect did not cooperate and they used a taser and beanbag rounds to take him into custody. He later died at the hospital. His identity has not yet been releas. Cused of leading police on ady, wild chase in a stolen box truck. This started yesterday morning in culver city. You could see the driver in the lowes truck weaving dangerously through traffic. The pursuit moved rough pacific palisades, then malibu, Thousand Oaks, and then finally camarillo. The driver hit another box truck on the 101 in newby park several times. He stolen truck eventually got stu iventura and officers fired tear gas into the cab. The suspect ran out, but was en taken into custody. Today, l. A. Mayor karen bass is awaiting approval from the city council on a new deal with the state to clean up homeless encampments near freeway freeways. Thos are typically caltrans or state properties. The new agreement basically cuts through red tape to allow l. A. City crews to go into the sites and clear trash and debris, and the state will reimburse the city for the cleanup costs. The plan still needs approval by the l. A. Board of public works and the city council, which is expected happening now. L. A. Mayor karen bass and a delegation from the city are in paris preparing for the 2028 olympics. The bill was signed after it was approved in a late night session by lawmakers. Leae galante is recalling the moment a black bear attacked r in her backyard north of pittsburgh. She had me down. She put my arm. She was on top of me. I thought, you know, i thought was going to die. She had just let her dog smokey out tuesday night, having no idea that a female bear was lurking in the dark until she saw bear cubs in her neighbors tree. There were three of tm. If you were to see that big those bears were in that tree. And how bighe was, she just kept coming. But i didnt want her to eat myaby. And if she would have taken one bite, he would be dead. Somehow the mama bear got distracted, and galante got herself and her dog back inside. I thought, oh my gosh, where . Slammed the door and iashat. Delonte suffered injuries to her head, neck and arm and may need surgery for broken bones in her face. She is a trooper. When we first saw her, she certainly was very traumatized.
