Active weather right now. Here is a live look at the conditions above the north bay and east bay hills. Good evening. Im ama daetz and im dan ashley. Thanks for joining us. Its really a mixed bag right now. Depending on where you are in the bay area. Abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking that active weather and joins us live with those details. Sandhya. Yeah and ama and dan, lets take a look at live doppler seven right now because we still have downpours across the region. If we can go to live doppler seven, well show you exactly where we are seeing the heavy rain. I do want to take you back first in time because we had pictures sent to us by somebody to one of our crews out in the field. There was a funnel cloud south of vacaville confirmed moments ago. This was by jeffrey from the National Weather service. Heres video of it. That funnel cloud was south of vacaville this afternoon. He did say, obviously it was not a tornado. It did not touch down. No damage reported. But this video was sent to us via one of our viewers that uh was out and met up and gave the information to our crew. J. R. Stone. All right, lets take a look at the downpours across 580 dublin right now, seeing some heavy rain across san ramon. Obviously, as we look at the south bay, this is where a lot of the activity has been. But right now just steady rain around gilroy. I do want to show you what it looks like in the north bay as well. Seeing some moderate pockets around parts of the north bay taking you back in time. Numerous thunderstorms fired up from the south bay to the east bay. Even around solano county. Flood advisories are in effect for all areas shaded in green, as weve already seen flooding, and that threat remains for another hour or two as that area of low pressure is off the Southern California coast. Still, an unstable atmosphere with this level one. And as we time this out for you, you will notice that those downpours will continue for the next hour or two. And then things will quiet down late tonight. We do have changes coming our way. Ill be back with a look at that in just a few minutes. All right, well check back. Thank you. Sandhya turning now to your voice. Your vote. As we keep an eye on the tight race to replace congresswoman anna eshoo. Heres a look at the numbers so far as as the ballots continue to be counted. As you see, you can see 21. 7 for sam liccardo right now and abc seven News Reporter lena howland spoke to the top three candidates of the congressional House District 16 seat, just a day after super tuesday in santa clara county. Election officials have their work cut out for them with stacks and stacks and stacks of ballots that still need to be counted. Yeah, 145,000 ballots left pending. And yeah, well continue to process. And it is a lot of work. It takes a community of our staff to do the whole process and certify the elections. And candidates in some races are hoping those uncounted ballots will make a difference in the contest for the u. S. House seat in district 16 to replace the retiring anna eshoo. One person has a clear lead, but less than 2000 votes separate the candidates in second and third place. We expected it would be a very tough contest, and it was former san jose mayor sam liccardo is leading the race. He hopes knocking on 2500 doors helped him secure one of the two spots on novembers ballot. And this is how campaigns are run, and certainly how ive won in the past is really making sure we have a grassroots operation that really engages people around the challenges that theyre struggling with the most. Santa clara county supervisor joe simitian, who has xiaos endorsement, is currently in second. The margin is healthy. Its clear. Im really looking forward to november. Simitian is confident he will be on the ballot this november. I think what sets me apart is the fact that i represented 14 of the 15 cities in this district, and ive actually tackled big problems as a legislator and gotten results that improve peoples lives. Assembly member evan lowe is sitting in third, but hes staying optimistic. Yes, politics can be a blood sport. Full contact. But at the end of the day, im excited about the energy that is also provided that demonstrates the type of vitality and hope and inspiration. And i want to be a good reflection of that so that others can answer that call for service as well. Official Election Results will not be certified until 30 days after the election by the registrar of voters in the south bay. Lena howland, abc seven news. Democrat latifa simon is the frontrunner to fill congresswoman barbara lees seat in the 12th congressional district. Lee is endorsing simon and actually handed off, as you see, a symbolic blue baton yesterday. Simons lead is almost double that of doctor jennifer tran, a cal state east bay professor. Simon planned to continue campaigning today in richmond. She already has some notable endorsements, including one from gavin newsom, the governor and the California Democratic party, as well. The race for the us senate in november will feature Southern California democrat adam schiff squaring off against republican steve garvey. The results so far are very close, as you see, despite the closeness of the race, abc news political director rick klein says schiffs primary Campaign Strategy paid off. Adam schiff made a play to give an give a little bit of assist to steve garveys campaign, knowing that its california and the democrat almost certainly wins. Well see if he comes to regret that. I think adam schiff makes himself the likeliest next senator from california. The outcome of the race means california wont have a female us senator for the First Time Since 1992. The result also likely marks the end of barbara lees congressional career. The 77 year old democrat represented oakland and the east bay in washington since being elected in 1998. San francisco voters passed a controversial ballot measure aimed at getting more drug users off the streets and into treatment. As abc seven News ReporterTara Campbell found out, there are calls to make sure that it doesnt end up hurting those its supposed to be helping. The goal is to help get people struggling with substance abuse, get off the streets and into treatment. Ballot measure f, backed by San Francisco mayor london breed, passing with 63 of the vote tuesday night, they got a misleading and performative ballot issue that demonizes welfare recipients rather than helps them. Starting next year, the city will begin Drug Screening welfare recipients and those deemed to be struggling with addiction will be required to go into treatment or lose their monthly payment. This is going to mean that a lot of people lose their assistance, which means they lose their housing, which means they lose their shelter. Those working closely with people on the streets raising concerns. Wednesday, gary mccoy is the head of policy and Public Affairs at healthright. Three, 61 of the citys largest nonprofit partners. In terms of treatment. You know, weve been saying for years staffing, staffing, staffing. We have such an incredible staffing shortage, and not just in San Francisco, but around the state and nationwide. The mayor on wednesday, responding to concerns, saying the city is making a push to hire more Mental Health workers. Its about the opportunity to use our existing resources to help people get on in a program, and we want to make sure that were staffing up our capacity to be as effective. The city, estimating about a third of the more than 5000 adults receiving welfare struggle with drug addiction. As with any big Program Change or new initiative, it will require a return, working internally at the Human Services agency and with other stakeholders to ensure that the systems are in place to provide the assessment and the access to treatment that these low income individuals desperately need. And mccoy says its key the city turned to the experts. I think we want to make sure that the folks that do have that expertise are are helping to draft, as i said, guardrails to make sure that this is being implemented, not just in a, in an effective way, but to make sure that its not harming the people, that its supposed to be helping. Tara campbell, abc seven news. Of course, there are many other races from yesterdays primary that were tracking very closely. You can see the results right on our home page at abc seven news. Com. To the east bay, where oakland is taking a close look at how residents throw away their trash. Its because of a state law requiring cities to make sure residents are composting and recycling properly. Abc seven News Reporter ryan curry has more on todays trash inspection. You might not think about it, but how you throw away your trash matters. And if youre not doing it properly, your city will let you know. That is the job of Rebecca Parnes and chinazo uzoechi. Today in oakland, sb 1383 is the short lived climate pollution reduction act, which requires that all residents, businesses and apartment buildings have three stream sorting for trash, compost and recycling and that they use it correctly. Its one of the many ways the state is combating climate change. No code was in the notes for this one. We followed along as they looked in dumpsters to see if oakland residents were sorting their trash the right way. The list of properties we visit are from waste management, so were like following their routes. In general, our first stop is an apartment complex by jack london square. We couldnt see their regular garbage, but we got a good look at their compost and recycling. These bins get a pass as we had scan and we got a picture of whats in the bin, the zappos software can actually kind of read it. So as you can see, its popping up. Its reading cardboard reads, how full it is. The compost had food in it. However it was rather empty. The fact that its not very full tells me that not that many people in this building are using it, and just around the corner, something that is not supposed to be there. A front door mat that does not belong, recycled, that belongs in the trash for sure. But for the most part, they say this complex was doing a good job with its trash. That was not the case for the large dumpsters across the street. We found many things that were in the wrong place, including this large bag. Its not recyclable, it is. It does appear to be made of plastic, but its not in oakland. The only plastic we recycle our bottles, tubs and jugs. And this is clearly not any of those three things. The recycling law is a key tool in california to cut down on emissions. The more people that properly discard their trash and compost, the better off the state will be. Sorting your food scraps for composting, i think, is the easiest thing folks can do at home to minimize their impact on climate change. So the next time you take out the trash, read those labels closely. It will have a big impact on the future of our planet. People are responsible for, in the end, making the right choice. So the more education we can do so that people see the value and importance of it, the better in oakland. Ryan curry, abc seven news. Still ahead, the chair of the ntsb telling a Senate Committee that boeing has been uncooperative with the investigation into Alaska Airlines midflight door plug mishap. The ntsb is testifying that boeing hasnt fully cooperated with the investigation. Heres abc News Reporter zohreen shah. Today, troubling testimony from the ntsb after a door plug fell off an Alaska Airlines boeing 737 max nine plane in the middle of a flight back in january. Speaking in front of the Senate Commerce committee, ntsb chair Jennifer Homendy saying boeing has not fully cooperated with their investigation. Boeing has not provided us with the documents and information that we have requested numerous times over the past few months, specifically with respect to opening, closing and removal of the door and the team that does that work at the renton facility. She says the manager of the team that works on doors has been on medical leave, preventing the agency from being able to conduct an interview. And despite requesting names of the 25 people on the team, boeing has not handed over that information. Its absurd that two months later we dont have that. The chair saying she believes boeing typically keeps documents when work on door plugs are conducted. Either they exist and we dont have them or they do not exist, which raises two very different questions. Several different questions. The preliminary ntsb report stated that the four bolts that were made to prevent the door from falling were not there when the flight took off. Reports showed rivets on the door plug were replaced last september, and the door was removed. The plug was closed with no visible bolts in three different places, according to a photo that boeing shared with the ntsb. Boeing saying in a Statement Today they have given a list of everyone on the 737 door team to the ntsb. As for the documents, boeings statement says if the door plug removal was undocumented, there would be no documentation to share. Zohreen shah, abc news, los angeles. We saw numerous lightning strikes from the south bay to the east bay this afternoon. That active weather pattern was all in association with an area of low pressure that is moving towards Southern California area, shaded in green under an urban and small stream. Flood advisory still not out of the question to see some minor flooding on the roadways like we have seen. So here is the area of low pressure spinning off the Southern California coast. We got the heating from the sun. We had the moisture in place, the low provided the lift and thats what brought us the active weather. Still seeing some lightning strikes across parts of california.
