The fire starting at a business, a supply company known to stock combustible material, according to local authorities. There was fire everywhere. Once we got that close we kept hearing more loud booms and more debris flying everywhere. It was crazy. I have never seen anything like that before. Today men are more likely to get a head start in buying a home and reap bigger benefits than women. Researchers find that women pay more for homes and make less when selling their property. Men are profiting more. For women looking to enter the market, they need to make sure they negotiate as well as just buying a home. They need to know that they have power. They have a place at the table. Reporter securing that place at the table is exactly what christina and stephanie are working to do. Community is one of the most important parts of this process. Every buyer that comes tows says, i know nothing about buying a house. So we are like, we didnt either. Reporter their biggest tips . First up, offset that monthly mortgage by renting out part of your home. You can make a difference with having a little more affordable rent. Work with a realtor who is experienced and familiar not just with your process, but with your neighborhood of interest, pricing, type of home youre after. One thing, and a key to negotiating. Do not be afraid to ask the seller to cover Closing Costs and repairs after the inspection, guys. What questions should a single person, male or female, ask before putting their savings down on a down payment . This is likely going to be the biggest purchase of your life. The biggest thing youll do with your money. You want to make sure do i have at least six months of Emergency Savings to cover my life. Mortgage, utility, groceries . You want to be realistic about what you are able to spend monthly on a mortgage, especially if you have student loans. And how long am i willing to own this home . It should be at least five years. Today happens to be National Cheese doodle day. I didnt know it was a thing but it is. National cheese doodle day. We challenged them to get a cheesey crunch into every course. Yes. In another twist were going to start with kristen. Were going to start with dessert. I love that. Okay. This is an ice cream sundae with cheese doodles. How are you doing that . Think of caramel corn and cheddar popcorn in the same bag. Very much in michigan and chicago theres a place there. Right . So i was like why dont we just do that all in one bite. You make a caramel, brown sugar, corn syrup, butter. You boil that altogether. And then were going to add baking powder. The baking powder baking soda rather, lightens it up. Aerates it a little bit. When you stir it all in there, right . In a Perfect World this would be liquid. Lets pretend it is. Its not. So we go like that. Pour it on top. Mix it all together, throw it in the oven for about 30 minutes. 30 minutes. Wow. It will help solidify the caramel. Then because ice cream sundae needs peanuts, chocolate, little sea salt. Oh wow. I love the mix of the flavors. What do you got . This is whipped cream with vanilla pudding. Thats a constant. Little pudding mixed in. Not enough sugar in there. Pop it with the cheese doodles and you have an ice cream sundae. Bam. Thats what weve got. Kristen, this is your first season hosting the show. It is. [ applause ] you won season 2. Whats it like being on this side of it now . So much better. [ laughter ] i forgot what it feels like to have to cook in front of people so im a little nervous. Its much better. My favorite. It is a staple in my house. I love it. I serve it with big crunchy salad. Why not . Usually milanese has parmesan in it. I just used cheese doodles instead. I have chicken cutlets that i pounded really thin. Also going to put salt in the flour. You want to season everything. Youre going to flip it around. Im going to whisk and salt my eggs. Just basically very standard mix. Okay. Whip these. Get the egg in there. Do it do it do it. Hold on. Wait wait for it. Patience. I have got some chilis. You tell that to the control room [ laughter ] there you go. Youre right. I say it with love. Lemon zest, chili, panko bread crumb, cheese doodles. There you go. Lemon zest nice addition. Makes it fresh, bright. Look at that. What you hope is a sizzling pan. Your pan is not quite sizzling. Leave that. It comes out brown and crispy and cheesey. I have got a salad with some parsley. Can i just ask you a question . When youre doing the milanese, how long do you want it in the pan . Pound it thin. The chicken will cook quickly. One minute on each side. Two minutes on each side. Okay, two. You want the chicken to be cooked all the way through. Yes. I have a radicchio salad with lemon juice. You added apples. I added apples and celery. I pile it on top. Just to enforce that cheesiness a little bit of beautiful shaved parmesan on top. Nicely done. Wow. You nailed it. Perfect to have cheese doodles. The new season, tom, was filmed in wisconsin. The cheese capital of the world. What kind of challenges are they going to face this year . There will be some cheese. There will be cheese. [ laughter ] there wont be cheese heads but there will be cheese. We did a cheese fest. Its cool. You have burrata and tomato. Yeah. So, tomato, in the off season people love tomato, so in the off season not so good fresh. So we roasted them with some olive oil. Just take garlic. Just throw it in there. Dont even have to peel it. Salt and pepper. This goes in the oven. For how long . Anywhere between depending on the water content, anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours. Really . You will see as this starts to roast, the liquid will come out. You pour it off. This will roast and get dried out. Not dry where its crispy, but dry. Okay. And then we do a salsa verde. Parsley, shallots, caper, garlic. This is also acid. If you do this in advance, dont add vinegar because it will turn it brown. Okay. You want to add that at the last second. In this case well do it last second. The other thing we put the top on but take this guy off. Turn it on. There we go. Come on. There you go. Trust me. Everybody is like, come on, you can do it we get the idea. It will come out like that. We just put a piece of burrata over the top. The crunch . I moved a little away from the puff and made my own. Parmesan. Spread it out, put it in the oven five or ten minutes, depending on your oven, to get crispy over the top. So easy and good to make. Little salsa verde around it. That looks delicious. Only problem, lucy cant remember what happened that night. Thats the back drop for auer this amy tinteras latest novel listen for the lies a thriller about a true crime podcaster who was determined to crack the unsolved case. Lucy left her home town five years ago and has been living in l. A. Since, sort of avoiding thinking about what happened. She cant remember what happened. That is a true crime podcaster who decided hes going to solve it because he already solved one big case on his true crime podcast. So we are listening to the podcast as he puts it on. A huge part of this story line is that obsession with true crime. What made you want to tap into that . I listened to serial years ago with everyone else. I loved it. I listened to it on a road trip. I binged the whole thing. It seemed like a really interesting way to get background about a story. If you put that into a book, what an exciting way to hear about what happened. Amy says the idea for the novel started during the trials of amanda knox, who was accused of killing her friend and then later exonerated. I was really struck at the time how no one seemed to believe her, that she and meredith were friends. The reaction was, no, you werent, youre lying, you were jealous of her. That made me realize that is often the portrayal we have seen of womens friendships in the media, jealous and catty. I have always had very close friendships with other women, so i thought that would be a really interesting idea to explore in fiction. It is a murder mystery, but there are moments of funny in it. Why did you think it was important to weave that through the seriousness of the topic . I personally cant really write a book without being funny. I need to make jokes in serious situations. Maybe its my coping mechanism. Writing a murder mystery felt natural to me. It is funny when you think about it. Terrible situations but then were listening to these very dramatic portrayals of them. I have got to make some jokes about it. Amy, artfully walking that dark comedy tight rope as readers hunt for clues and listen for the lies. Even though there are serious issues like domestic violence, i really wanted it to be a page turner. Lot of my writing process is about that. Trying to make sure i keep you in your chair just flipping the pages. We do find out who did it. Its not who you expect it to be. I will tell you that. Listen for the lies is available now. [ laughter ] very loving. Shes off camera saying, i did say that. What would you say is the biggest thing you learned in this journey the past ten years . I think that we all i know we all have, and im sure this will sound familiar to everybody. We all have a voice in our head, a voice that chases us out of bed in the morning, thats yammering to us all day long. Judging people, comparing ourselves to other people. This nonstop talk, if we broadcast alive, youd be locked up. It is happening whether you are aware of it or not. What meditation can do is give you the selfawareness so that you can respond wisely instead of reacting bluntly. Instead of being yanked all over the place by these voices in your head. Genius. I have been doing the math. 10 happy over ten years. Are you 100 happier now . [ laughter ] i am happier. I do think though that, like a good investment, it compounds annually. These are skills. Happiness is not a factory setting. A set of skills that you can develop. That is radically good news. So you can get way happier, way more than 10 . What can we expect for this, the anniversary of 10 happier . I rewrote the introduction because i wanted to talk about what i have seen change over the last ten years.
