The massive blizzard in the Sierra Nevada mountains is finally blowing over. But the region is still dealing with the aftermath. Some areas saw up to five inches of snow per hour through the storm that lasted for four days. A large stretch of interstate 80 closed down for several days as more than ten feet total dumped in some areas. More than 300 vehicles were stranded, which became a dangerous situation for many. Tow Truck Drivers were very busy and officers were checking car to car. Theres a lot of people and a lot of cars, some of them were there overnight, some of them got rescued and sent to the hospital or to the nearest hotel. We really need to focus on the people in the vehicles. Are you prepared to sit there for a while . Do you have food . Do you have water . Do you have enough fuel in your vehicle to keep the heat going . The video was taken in South Lake Tahoe where this car was completely submerged, covered in the snow pile up on one persons driveway while the snow is paused. For now, theres still some more to come with another storm on the way tonight. Well, skiers are wasting no time making the most of the additional snow in the sierra. This is video from kirkwood resort today, which was a very busy from the moment the lifts opened. Woohoo yay whoa you think youre having fun . Screams of joy from one skier at dodge ridge resort in pine crest. Thats abc seven news photojournalist Steve Stifter enjoying the conditions after the storm. The temperature shut down most of the resorts in the area, having a blast. Hes got a steady hand there. All right, more snow is coming to tahoe. Indeed here in the bay area, were in for some weather changes as well. Abc seven weather anchor Spencer Christian tells us what is next. Following days of rain. Spencer. Yeah, christian. Well, lets start with the sierra, where the blizzard now has ended, but theres still a snowstorm. Its still accumulating. But when we were forecast totals of 8 to 10ft, we were right. With the four day total snowfall, total shows sugarwell getting over ten feet of snow as soda springs nearly ten feet, kingvale 106in of snow. So the storm which we the warning i should say the blizzard warning has expired, but theres still a winter storm warning for a portion of the northern sierra, mainly to the north northwest of lake tahoe. Thats in effect until 4 a. M. Wednesday. So so the storm is not quite so strong as it was, but snow is still accumulating maybe another half foot or so will accumulate over the next 24 hours. Snowpack in the sierra uh at at or above 100 of average for most of the area. So thats good news. Now getting back here to the bay area, we had some impressive three day rainfall totals. But as we look at live doppler seven now, you see weve got relatively calm conditions. Maybe a sprinkle or two moving through the area tonight. But the next storm out at sea is moving towards southern california, not toward us. We can expect some sunny, milder days later in the week. And ill give you a look at that in my seven day forecast a little bit later. In the south bay state, leaders are using san jose as an example of how to bridge the gap between homelessness and permanent housing. They joined city officials at one of san joses interim Housing Communities today to announce support for the interim housing act of 2024, the legislation would speed up the time it takes to build short time housing across the state. State senator josh becker is sponsoring this bill as well. Over the last 12 months, the rest of the state has increased by 10. Candidates for californias open senate seat are crisscrossing the state before tomorrows primary this morning, congressman adam schiff visited Small Businesses in San Francisco, where he talked about the importance of housing. And i want to make sure that were building hundreds of thousands of new units of housing so we can bring those costs down so people can live near where they work, so we can have people who are living on the street into shelter for this afternoon, schiff was in downtown san jose, where he walked lunch at a mediterranean restaurant with mayor matt mehan. Schiff has bay area roots. He attended high school in danville and graduated from stanford. The latest polls show schiff falling behind republican steve garvey in the race for senate. Garvey has barely campaigned but has name recognition. Of course, hes a former baseball star. Schiff and garvey are followed by congresswoman katie porter and barbara lee. Well, katie porter says shes not worried, even though she is trailing in the polls. Every pollster would tell you low turnout elections are surprising. Look, ive won before. Before, when the polls had me down. At this point. And so ive done this before and pulled it out. I think its going to take time for every last vote to be counted. The other candidate in the race for senate, barbara lee, was campaigning in irvine over the weekend. She focused on the younger generation. Just days after releasing a sweeping Climate Action plan that emphasizes resolving racial and class disparities in environmental matters. First of all, young people uh your uh generation is the generation that we all are fighting for. I am running for the United States senate, not for barbara lee, but for you, lee has served the east bay as a us representative since 1998. By the way, this is very important. The top two candidates after tomorrows primary will advance to the november. So if two democrats win the seat is guaranteed to remain blue. If a republican and a democrat win. Californias attorney general is promoting a new bill that would guarantee key funding for dna labs all across the state. Rob bonta says the bill would update proposition 69, which was passed by voters in 2004. It set aside money from criminal fines to fund the state dna bank program. Prop 69 generates 12 million a year for state and local crime labs, but funding is set to disappear after this year. The bills author says dna has been used to solve crimes big and small. Californias department of justice also announced that it has identified 2000 missing persons since the missing persons dna program was established in 2001. The state of union square. We learn about a plan to revitalize the area and why some local businesses say its the wrong approach. But not everyone agrees with the multimillion dollar promenade refresh thats on the way to go. When it comes to improving San Francisco. Abc seven News Reporter Melanie Woodrow is here to explain whats going on. Dan and kristen, a lot of people are talking about this one. For some, its a question of where to spend money and what will make the greatest difference in changing San Franciscos reputation. If perception is everything, the state of union square depends on who you ask. Its night and day from when we came out of the pandemic. We have one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Um, today it looks okay. Its a topic thats top of mind for city officials and local Business Owners who are attempting to figure out how to revitalize union square and change the citys doom loop reputation, including following the announcement that macys plans to sell its Union Square Location sometime over the next three years. One of those revitalization efforts is the powell street promenade refresh, which will replace these existing aluminum parklets with a new design. This is the gateway to San Francisco. I cant think of a more important place to put resources to ensure that the downtown will recover. The idea is to make the promenade more inviting so that retailers will return, filling these empty storefronts, improving it and making it more inviting is going to be beneficial for any business or hotel. But where one Union Square Hotel ceo sees a solution, another Union Square Hotel gm sees the wrong problem being addressed because thats not solving the problem at all. Steve rizzo believes city officials should focus their efforts and money on addressing what he says he sees outside hotel g on geary street. Vandalism including graffiti. We cant get it removed somehow. It just does not want to come off. And shattered glass and they tap the glass on both ends and both of those shattered addiction. When we see open use all the time and offensive street behavior, people defecating onto the curb with his pants down, all of which he says have led to comments on his paid social media ads like watch out for the needles on the ground where your hip waders, the human excrement, is at least knee deep and dont go to sf. We wont see a return of tourism the way we had seen it in 2019 and prior, until we clean up our city completely. Marissa rodriguez is ceo of the Union Square Alliance. I think you know, hes right. I think resources need to be spent toward those things. I think theyre absolutely important. I dont think its mutually exclusive. I think we need to be focused on addressing those issues. And then also doing what we can to also improve the rest of community so we can continue to be a thriving city. The president and ceo for Union Square Hotel often picks up trash he sees on geary street pride is not is not something that you wait for the dpw to come by and clean it up. Pride is you want your street to look inviting and because youre proud of the city. So show it. And while Everyone Wants San Francisco to be known without infamy, jeez, ive been cleaning it up all day. I think the question is, are we seeing some steps in the right direction . I think so, compared to two years ago, the image that we allowed to occur in San Francisco in 20 and 21, its going to take time to change that. Agreeing on how to get there might not come as easily. If youre really not addressing with the true situation is or the problems are, were then were then selling something that we cant deliver. The Union Square Alliance meeting is on wednesday. Its by invite only and not open to the public or to journalists. It will be interesting to hear what comes out of that meeting for sure. Yeah, lots of great ideas. Hopefully melanie. Thanks. All right. Supporters of a recall effort say at least 123,000 people in Alameda County want to force pamela price out as District Attorney. Thats how many signatures they say theyve collected to get the recall initiative on the ballot. Abc seven News Reporter ryan curry has new developments in that effort, and the fight against it about safety. Ive never said it before, but im saying it today. Were going to win. Recall price a major milestone for those who want pamela price out of office. This group is turning in a petition with enough signatures that could lead to a special election. We shouldnt have to do this. But for the safety of our community and the safety of our children, the safety of our businesses, this is something that had to be done. This is a right for the citizens of Alameda County. Ten boxes with over 123,000 signatures being turned over to the Alameda County registrars office. Moments later, at the office, emotions as they were handed a receipt for those signatures. When theres a will, thats a wake. Most definitely. And guess what . And we all did it. So we did it. So lets say we did it. We did it. Its personal for members in this group. Many have lost loved ones to violence and say the District Attorney is not doing enough to hold criminals accountable. Our son was murdered back in 2020 and the person was under murder charges under the old da. Pamela price came in and dropped all the charges, added her own of which none were murder. While some want her out as da, members of the group trying to keep her in office say she is doing what she was elected to do. Any courthouse in Alameda County, you will see deputies of her office are locking people up , and theyre making sure people are accountable for, for what happened. The reality is, is crime didnt start when da price took office. And its also going to exist in Alameda County long beyond her time here with the boxes being dropped off it now begins the process where they have to count and validate each of the signatures. If all lines up, it gets turned over to the board of supervisors, who then have to set a special election date that could be as early as this spring. So hopefully in late april or maybe early may, there will be a special election. Supporters of the District Attorney believe the voters will back her. She was elected with 53 of the vote over a year ago, despite being hugely outspent by the establishment. The truth is the establishment lost their annoyed. Theyve dumped over 2 million into a campaign to oust her. But those in the recall effort say even if some of the signatures wont count, they will still have enough for an election recall in oakland. All right, lets talk a little bit about the weather. This wet, dreary, rainy weather. Weve had, especially as it drags on, can be a real downer for some people. It can be. So we want to brighten your day. How about this . Ah, stunning rainbow in our very own dan noyes captured this wow perfect arch. I just ran into this man in the hallway. No wonder he was smiling today. I took that picture spanned from alcatraz to San Francisco. Spencer, thats a really fantastic shot. Thats a beautiful shot. Beautiful shot. I guess theres not going to be a weather recall now. Things are looking. Things are looking up. Heres a look at live doppler seven. You can see that conditions are relatively quiet right now. We have some clouds around little moisture in the air, and there might even be a spotty shower or two moving through the north bay. But basically weve got calm conditions right now. Now theres a storm developing out at sea. As you can see on the wider image here is aiming down towards southern california. So its going to miss the bay area, but its close enough that it could generate some unsettled weather over the next couple of days, meaning a few clouds and a possibility of a sprinkle or two. Heres our forecast animation starting at 5 p. M, and during the nighttime hours, we might see again a couple of isolated showers moving mainly through the north bay. Looks like the remainder of the bay area will probably be rain free, and that pattern continues into through tomorrow, actually into early wednesday. So by wednesday night were looking at rainfall totals for most of the bay area. Only a couple of hundredths of an inch. But San Francisco might actually get a quarter of an inch of rain out of the unsettled weather. And up in the north bay, pretty much the same picture, up to about a quarter of an inch right now were looking at temperature readings that are 2 to 5 degrees warmer than at this time yesterday. So lets take a closer look at specific temperature readings. Mid 50s right now at San Francisco. And oakland weve got upper 50s at hayward, san mateo, 60 degrees at san jose. All the temperature readings looking northward and eastward. Right now weve got, um, 52 degrees of petaluma. Thats our coolest reading. And mid 50s at santa rosa, napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. These are the forecast headlines. Unsettled weather for the next two days, thursday and friday, though, will bring us sunny and milder weather. Yay for that. And over the weekend well see increasing clouds and a looks like an outside chance of some light rain developing. But were not ready to call that one yet. Overnight again, a couple of passing showers may move through the north bay. Itll be generally cloudy for the rest of us overnight lows generally in the mid to upper 40s and then high temperatures tomorrow under mixed sky conditions. A little bit of sun, a little bit of clouds. Well see highs of 59 at half moon bay, low 60s right around the bay shoreline. And as we move into the inland east bay, 6263 degrees at places like livermore, concord, antioch, up into fairfield, about 62 Degrees North bay. Highs upper 50s to about 60. And down in the south bay 65, in san jose. So very nice. Mild weather in the south bay tomorrow. Heres the accuweather seven day forecast tomorrow. Of course. Super tuesday uh get out and rock the vote. The weather should not be an inhibiting factor in voting tomorrow. If you havent voted already, then still a chance of a shower or two on wednesday, but mainly dry. And look at thursday and friday. Sunny skies with high temperatures in the low to mid 60s. Actually mainly mid 60s from the bay to our inland areas going into the weekend. The mild weather holds on but clouds will increase on saturday uh sunday, oscar sunday here on abc and everywhere else too, but especially here at abc. Also so its the day that we spring forward to daylight savings time, right . Yeah, i like the way you think. By the way, on monday already looking at the weekend. Yeah, im always looking ahead. A state agency just approved 650,000 to invest in ropeless fishing gear. Gear with ropes linking buoys on the surface with the traps underwater is a leading cause of entanglement for migrating whales, which is often why the season is delayed for crab fishing. The problem is so severe, dungeness crab season has been delayed. A number of times in recent years, sometimes drastically, to help test the gear, the government selected 20 dungeness crabbers to use it this spring to see how it works. Now theyre getting alarmed at the idea of being stranded in their homes as they watch the erosion worsen over the last week. The courts unanimous ruling comes before a super tuesday tomorrow, where 16 states hold elections. Abcs perry russom is in washington today, a unanimous decision from the Supreme Court. Former President Trump stays on the ballot. Its a very important decision. Were very well crafted and i think it will go a long way toward bringing our country together. The case surrounds colorado Supreme Courts decision to disqualify trump from his primary ballot, citing Section Three of the 14th amendment. The section reads, no one who has taken an oath to support the constitution and then engaged in insurrection can hold Public Office afterward. In todays decision, the justices writing the constitution makes Congress Rather than the states responsible for enforcing Section Three. Jason murray defended colorado decision in front of the Supreme Court, even though it made procedural determine that colorado, as a state, couldnt enforce Section Three of the 14th amendment. The issue of Donald Trumps eligibility for the office of the presidency remains very much a live issue. Colorado secretary of state expressing disappointment over the ruling, writing colorado should be able to bar oath breaking insurrections from our ballot. The ruling has implications nationwide, with both maine and illinois now forced to put trump back on the ballot after kicking him off. I think this opinion puts those to rest. Trump already focusing on his next Supreme Court case regarding president ial immunity. If a president doesnt have full immunity, you really dont have a president because nobody that is serving in that office will have the courage to make, in many cases, what would be the right decision. That case on president ial immunity will decide whether or not trump can be prosecuted for his actions as president surrounding january 6th. Hes pleaded not guilty. I mean, i guess it depends on how you take it. If some people are taking it as as if hes saying, let them eat cereal. Yeah, like let them eat cake, but can i that he meant it. I dont take it that way. Its just someone in his position should be a little more sensitive as to how its going to play. So. But weve seen lots of people in high positions who are insensitive these days. Oh, yes. Im just glad. Really . Yeah. And the price of cereal has gone up by the way, too. Oh, yeah. Have you noticed that . Oh yeah. Thats true. Its still cheaper than a sirloin. Yeah, im going to take uh ramen over cereal. If i had to have dinner, you know, like cheap. Okay. I mean, when she travels, she sells out the opponents stadium or arena. You know, thats something, karina. Thats what stars do. Yeah. And i think its amazing what weve seen. Theres just this wave of women athletes being on this stage. You know, sabrina versus steph, just not too long ago. That was so cool to see. So i think this is great for womens sports. Hopefully it just keeps increasing and we get more girls out there who are inspired by these amazing athletes and get more people watching womens sports, whether its basketball or anything else, we should do our own version. Dan versus kristen shuffleboard. What do you think i dont know, yeah. What would be the sport you got . Curling. Curling. Okay. There you go. Try that. Actually, San Francisco giants manager bob melvin is now requiring everyone in the teams dugout to stand during the national anthem. Melvin says the decision is more about letting the other team know that the black and orange is ready to play. He adds that the same rules apply during his team as manager at the time, as his manager, during his time as manager for the as and the padres, melvin occasionally cracked down if he noticed a lack of participation during the national anthem. Whether its the coaches, the bat boys, the players, and this is how were going to show that were here. I mean, thats what he said. And if thats what works for him, i guess thats whats going to have to work for the giants. And i feel like there hasnt been as much controversy, you know, amongst the players in Major League Baseball versus nba, you know, football. And also on the giants, not really a big controversy either. So all right, a new era. But 10s thats all you need to figure out if youll have a long life. That thats about balance and strength. Obviously this is more about balance. Balance is so important, though. I cant even do more than one minute of the wall sit, you know. Oh, right. So is that bad . Oh okay. Got to work on that. You guys practice . I cant even bend over and pick anything up right now. I mean, i do have a huge thing here. So what does that say i dont know.
