Lets catch you up now on the very latest we have as we come on the air. Maines governor now says 18 people are dead and some of those victims are being identified. And a youth bowling coach at the local Bowling Alley, members of a deaf Cornhole Club and loved ones are among the lives lost tonight. A Law Enforcement source tells abc news the suspect had affiliations at both the Bowling Alley and bar that he allegedly targeted. The source says he may have been looking for an exgirlfriend at one of them. The suspect also now appears to have been fairly thoughtful about eluding police. There was a plan, they believe police recovered a cell phone. He left behind, apparently thinking it could be tracked. Abc seven News Reporter j. R stone joins us from the newsroom with more on the search for that suspect. J. R alma dan, this has been an extremely busy night in maine as Law Enforcement personnel are actively looking for cards. So far they have been unsuccess all but hundreds of individuals are working through the night and on the ground. Officials, though, saying it is unknown if card is in this home or any others in the area that they are searching. More than 350 Law Enforcement personnel, including Police Officers, fbi agents, us marshals and atf agents, have now been searching for card for more than 24 hours on the ground and in the air. Authorities tell us the 40 year old has a history of military service in the reserves cards. Neighbor says robert had just bought a high tech scope for one of his guns. It was a 2,000 thermal scope. He had just gotten and its, you know, its infrared. You can see in the dark with it. It picks up heat signatures. Officials say cards spent two weeks in a Mental Health facility. This past summer after allegedly hearing voices and threatening to shoot up a National Guard facility in maine. Little zoe was grazed by a bullet. But is okay. When i turned around, i saw the shooter right behind me had just come in the door. You never thought id grow up and leg. And its just like. Like why . A question that remains unanswered by Law Enforcement sources with knowledge of the investigation told abc news that a note found inside cards home is being described as a suicide note addressed to his son. This year the us has seen 565 Mass Shootings with all but seven states reporting at least one, according to the gun violence archive. Last year, there were 645. They count any shooting with four or more people shot. There were 688 Mass Shootings in 2021, which is one of the highest counts since the data started being tracked. Killings in maine are rare, with the state reporting a total of 29 last year. Lewiston is a fairly small city and to think that this is in our own backyard is just its just very hard to comprehend. Maine has had just three Mass Shootings since 2018. What happened at lewiston has at least one lawmaker vowing for change. Maine, i would point out, has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the country. And has a long heritage of responsible gun ownership. The time has now come for me to take responsibility for this failure, which is why i now call on the United States congress to ban assault rifles like the one used by the sick perpetrator of this mass killing in lewiston. So lets talk about that fire weather watch that goes up for the hills lake solano and mendocino counties. 5 a. M. Saturday until 5 p. M. Sunday. Combination of 40 to 50 mile an hour wind gusts lower humidity means any fires that develop are going to rapidly spread the fire. Danger is not a concern. Tomorrow morning, temperatures are going to start out on the chilly side, 30 to 50 by noon time. Still on the cool side with some high clouds passing through and the afternoon highs will remain below average by evening. Those temperatures are going down again saturday morning. So the pilot from Pleasant Hill appeared in federal court today as now his wife is reacting for the very first time. Now, its important to remember that that pilot, emerson is facing two different sets of charges, one federal and one state in oregon. Those charges also carry different potential consequences if he is convicted. And emerson pleaded not guilty on thursday to federal charges of interference with flight crew members and attendance. That charge could have a penalty of up to 20 years in prison, says bay area legal expert stephen clark. It is possible that the federal government is using this charge as a placeholder until they do further investigation in and have their experts in aviation looking at whether mr. Emersons conduct could actually have brought down that airplane. According to an fbi affidavit. Emerson said he was suffering from a nervous breakdown while on the plane. He also told authorities he had taken psychedelic mushrooms around two days prior. Emersons defense attorney spoke outside court today. He would like to reiterate that he had no intention to harm himself or anybody on the airplane when he acted in addition to the federal charges, emerson also faces state charges in oregon, including 83 counts of attempted murder. The state authorities believe that had the pilot and other people in the cockpit not intervened, that plane would have crashed and killed everyone on board. Clark believes that in both the state and federal cases, the Mental Health argument will play a key role in emersons defense. Im a well respected pilot. Also speaking outside the courthouse thursday, emersons wife said while she knew her husband was struggling with depression, she was in a state of shock over his arrest. She told reporters her husband would have never knowingly tried to crash the plane. Now, another thing clark noted during our conversation was how emersons case might impact flight regulations moving forward. Clark believes the faa will look at this event and possibly reconsider whether to allow people who arent actually flying the plane to be in the cockpit during flight in the studio, tim johns, abc seven news. October is a time of year when we are concerned about this, 2 00 in the afternoon on saturday, they ramp up at 9 p. M.
