Overnight we did hear from central maine Medical Center that confirmed they were responding to this mass casualty, mass shooting. In the chaos and with this incredibly high number of victims, they havent even been able to confirm the number of people they are treating. We heard from one employee inside who said, of course, they have called in all Emergency Department and Critical Care nurses. Surrounding hospitals have activated their Emergency Response, called in all available staff. You have to imagine there is some concern this morning about this communitys ability to respond to the sheer volume of victims. We also have to note this morning the Police Presence surrounding the hospital. A number of Law Enforcement vehicles and several officers with long guns waiting at the entrance. So anybody who tries to get into the hospital will have to stop and check in with them first. In the area, of course, that shelter in place order, still in effect. People are urging all nonessential personnel to stay home. You have to imagine all medical staff will be essential to treat all these people who need care. Robin . The person of interest, robert card, he is a firearms expert and Army Reservist with a history of mental illness, recently telling officials that he was hearing voices and threatening to attack a National Guard base in maine. He was committed to a Mental Health facility for two weeks this past summer. As a result, there are hundreds of federal and state Law Enforcement descending on the scene in a massive drag net. Im told the fbi, u. S. Marshals will offer services as well. The fbi has dozens of agents helping process the crime scene and who are assisting with the victims. The fbi is also helping in the manhunt which involves helicopters and setting up road check points as part of an effort to try to keep this person from escaping the area. Tactical teams will also be made available z as well as behavioral scientists as needed. Sources say this is receiving the highest level of attention from not only the attorney general, fbi director, Homeland Security secretary, but all the president himself. Im told this is literally an all hands on deck situation. Its the worst mass shooting of the year and believed to be the worst mass shooting since the massacre of those children in uvalde in may of 2022. The sheer rash of Mass Shootings, its really taken hold. Trump was in court to watch cohen, who testified his exboss directed him to make his net worth whatever number he wanted it to be. But on crossexamination, trumps lawyers questioned why cohen told congress back in 2019 trump did not direct him to inflate his net worth . The defense threw up its hand, asked the judge to end the trial because of cohens contradiction. Uaw and ford both confirming a tentative deal has been reached. The union is calling it a major victory, saying the prospective contract calls for raises of about 25 over four years. It will raise the top wage to more than 40 an hour including an increase of 68 for starting wages to more than 28 an hour. There will be other benefit increases as well. Ford said its looking forward to getting three of its truck plants back up and running and getting its 20,000 employees back to work. Majority of the 57,000 rank and file ford employees will have to approve the proposal for it to become official. Officials about to deliver a press conference about that deadly mass shooting right here last night. 16 People Killed. Dozen morse injured. Lets listen. Thank you for being here. As you may notice, my voice is a little hoarse after working through the night. As you all know, last night local, county, state and federal Law Enforcement officers from around the state of maine responded to reports of a massive shooter. At several locations in lewiston. The Law Enforcement officers, in the face of danger, responded swiftly, selflessly and with great bravery. Bravery that they continue to demonstrate today as they search tirelessly for a person of interest in connection with last nights massacre. On behalf of all Law Enforcement, i express my deep gratitude for your response and for your continued service. I also thank the hospitals and other medical Emergency Responses, responders. Im profoundly saddened to stand before you today to report that 18 people lost their lives. 13 people are injured in last nights attacks. In memory of those we lost and in honor to those who were injured, President Biden and i have ordered all u. S. Flags and state of maine flags to be lowered to half staff immediately for the next five days. Maine state police have issued a shelter in place order for lewiston, lisbon and boden as the manhunt for that person of interest, robert card, continues. I will let Law Enforcement speak to the on going manhunt and their investigation. Mr. Card is considered armed and dangerous and Police Advise that maine people should not approach him under any circumstances. I continue to strongly urge many people to follow the direction of state and local Law Enforcement amid this ever changing situation. Please, if you see anything suspicious, please call 911. There are still many things we dont yet know about these attacks, but the full weight of my administration is behind Law Enforcements efforts to capture the person of interest, robert card, to hold who ever is responsible for this atrocity, accountable under the full force of state and federal law. This attack strikes at the very heart of who we are and the values we hold dear for this precious place we call home. All maine people are sharing in the sorrow of the families who lost loved ones last night, loved ones, normal people who were killed or injured while unwinding from a day of work, all while spending time with family and friends socializing. So on behalf of the 1. 3 Million People of the whole state of maine, i hold these families and this city in my heart today. I know that the people of lewiston are enduring immeasurable pain. Were also going to hear from colonel william ross from the Maine State Police. Bill will highlight some of the timeline things that youre probably concerned about and certainly interested in. So the colonel will come up and speak to that. And well also have jody, the special agent in charge for the fbi out of the boston field office. And jody will highlight some federal partnerships and some of the things that our federal partners are bringing to the table, bringing to bear to help us with this investigation. We also have a bunch of people here. Once you start naming people, youre going to have a problem because youll forget somebody or screw something up. Im confident in our community that our community has and will continue to come together throughout this endeavor to bring this to a successful conclusion. Although difficult, i do ask the public to continue to be mindful of their own personal safety and also that they be patient with the process as much as possible. There is extensive work and attention to detail that goes into such large scale investigation. Im confident in the expertise and professionalism of our investigators and all Law Enforcement officials that are currently involved. This is an all hands on deck approach. We have a great deal of collaboration and resources that have been made available to us. There are far too many to name individually, but i t more than you know. I want to thank all of our brave men and women of the Lewiston Police department, Fire Department staff, medical personnel, First Responders of any kind that have gone that came from far and wide and have come together and continue to work tirelessly in bringing this situation to an end. And we hope to locate and hold the person accountable. I think youll hear next from the state police who is taking the lead in this investigation, although that we are working hand in hand with them. I think colonel ross will be able to fill you in on a little bit more. Thank you, chief. First and foremost, this is an ongoing Homicide Investigation and search for the person that is responsible for it. Were in the early stages of this investigation and i just want to let you know, we will have updates. Well be putting some type of a schedule out later on. But again, early stages of a Homicide Investigation. And we want to be careful that were doing things correctly. We want to get ahead of ourselves. Im going to give you a bit of a timeline here to kind of fill in some of the blanks, to give you some of the facts. As we know them right now. A lot of this information will then be transferred to the Attorney Generals Office as they will be the lead prosecutor here. Again, in any Homicide Investigation. Last night, october 25th, at approximately 6 56 p. M, the Auburn Communications center received a 911 call of a male shooting in just in time or the spare Time Recreation Center in the town of lewiston, located at 24. Mollison way in lewiston. Shortly after that, at about 700 and 8 p. M, the Communications Center received multiple 911 calls about an active shooter inside of a chavanges billiards at 553, lincoln street in the town of lewiston. A large Law Enforcement response from multiple surrounding agencies assisted the Lewiston Police department in trying to identify by who this individual was and what was happening. As you can imagine, this was a very fast paced, fast moving, very fluid scene, very dangerous scene that these guys and girls were going into to. 18 people are now deceased at at this time for the victims at the just in time and establishment. Seven people are deceased. There were one female and six males, all from an apparent gunshot wound. Victims at the qmjhls billiards. Eight are deceased, seven males inside the establishment. One male outside of the established patient. Again, also apparent gunshot wounds. Multiple people will transfer to area hospitals as central maine Medical Center saint marys and maine Medical Center, three people that were transferred to those hospitals are deceased for a total of 18 people deceased at this time. The investigation into the person responsible for this identified a vehicle located at the scott boat landing in lisbon that person, through the registration of that vehicle, was identified. Its been stated earlier as a robert card, born in 1983. Several of the deceased have been identified and their families next of kin have been notified. Approximately eight people at this point have been identified, ten people, ten of these victims still need to be identified at this time. Im currently tsay. There is an arrest warrant for eight counts of murder for mr. Card. And the reason its eight counts because ten people have not yet been identified as those people are identified, the counts will probably go to the total of 18. He should be considered armed and dangerous based on our investigation, we believe this is someone that should not be approached. This is someone that should be if you come into any contact with this individual or someone that you think looks like this individual, well, you ought to call 911. And ill provide some tip line numbers at the conclusion of my briefing. Lewiston police department, federal, state, county and other local municipal cities are involved in a coordinated search at this moment for this individual. So as the Ongoing Investigation and theres a search to apprehend this person, both happened simultaneously, i cant stress this enough. This s is an ongoing an on going investigation in the early stages. More information will come out in conjunction with the Attorney Generals Office as the lead prosecutor. Cant share all of our information right now. Im sure you understand that. Im going to give out two numbers that are going to a tip line. 911 is also appropriate for this. If anyone can call these two number, this would go to the state police tip line. Area code 2075099002. Well be sending something out later that has that information in it, if you werent able to grab that now. Again, this is a very fluid situation. We have a lot of resources as chief st. Pierre had mentioned earlier that are on the ground in a coordinated effort to apprehend this individual. Notified the department of education and they have determined what they are going to do with the schools. Lot of area schools were shut down today based on the conversation with them. Tough time for Law Enforcement. It was a rough night last night. Were committed to bringing whoevers responsible to justice and again we are currently looking for mr. Card right now. My name is jody cohen special agent in charge of Fbi Boston Division which covers the state of maine. Our hearts go out to everyone who was impacted as a result of this senseless violence. The fbi is working hand in hand with Law Enforcement partners, our evidence Reconnaissance Team is processing the very extensive scene. We are providing investigative and tactical support as well as victim specialists are working with those affected by this tragedy. This very active Investigation Continues to unfold, were asking the public to stay vigilant and come forward with any information that you might have that you feel is helpful to our investigators. My pledge is that the fbi will carry out this investigative case with rigor. We will workday and night alongside our Law Enforcement partners to get the answers to the questions this community deserves. I would say the reality here, from a resource standpoint, what weve asked for, the answer has been yes, period. Tactical teams, Emergency Response team, full blown investigative units, detective units that have come from multiple states, whether its the commissioners from vermont, New Hampshire. Massachusetts saying what do you need . What can we do for the state of maine . We are prepared to take a few questions. Keep in mind we may not be able to answer as indepth as you would like. We dont plan on taking a great deal of questions. I think followup press events will allow for that. Sir . The other thing here, there are reports that this individual had Mental Health issue threatening to shoot up the National Guard. The question becomes why was he in possession of this weapon . Certainly why wasnt he stopped sooner . I think those are all valid questions and questions we are looking into now but not questions that we can answer today. Considering this occurred last night. Theres still an active search for the suspect in question. I can appreciate those questions, but not something we can answer. Is it something youre investigating . It is certainly one of the things we want to follow up on. All aspects of that. Right here. Yes . Because of the ages of who have died, how many are under 18 and over 18 . Im not sure we have that information with us today. We wanted to break it down by gender because thats something we have readily available. We did not break this down into age ranges at all. What do we know about the background of the suspect or person of interest. I notice the language isnt clear. Person of interest not suspect . What can you tell us . I think we use person of interest last night for half of the room that was here for that press event. As the colonel mentioned theres now arrest warrants for murder for this particular individual, mr. Card. So he is viewed as a suspect and theres a full blown press by all partners to bring him into custody. What was the second piece of the question . What can you tell us about his background . The idea that he had gotten help and was committed to a Mental Health facility for weeks. How could someone who fit that profile still be in possession of semiautomatic weapons . I do think statutes around firearms are pretty complex. We will be reviewing that information as we move forward. Thats not an answer that we are prepared to give today. That leads to motive, Behavioral Health issues and how that impacts this situation. I would expect youll hear back from us in the future. I have got a question. Weve seen helicopters north. Can you tell us whats leading you that far north . So we have Law Enforcement assets deployed over a number of communities doing followups on a number of different things. As you can imagine, great deal of search warrants that were following up on. We do have partners from the New Hampshire state police. They were here last night to assist us. Whether we have tactical elements out or were searching an area, some air assets would be very very valuable to us. We arent going to speak to what brings us to a specific community. The unidentified victims, what are people encouraged do . Is there dna testing for Family Members . Okay. So we did have a family, a Reunification Center open last night. We do have Behavioral Health liaisons fully engaged to work with family, with loved one, and work with victims, for that matter, who may be in the hospital seeking treatment. Those things are actively occurring. Were dealing with each one of those situations separately. If we need dna, or were just waiting to find a loved one, some kind of Family Member that we can make a notification. I think that varies across the board. Ill take two more questions. Right here. [ inaudible question ] i think were always concerned about motive. You say triggering event. Thats a motive for us. Thats not something were prepared to discuss today, but i do appreciate the question. Clearly, something thats important. One additional followup. Do you know why this bar, this Bowling Alley . Was he looking for someone, for something . I think that does speak to motive. Thats not something we are prepared to answer. Right here . You say arrest warrants issued today. Do you know if card is still in the state . Were actively searching for him. If i knew the answer to those questions, this would be a different press conference, i would assume. We dont know his location. Ill leave it at that. We are working with the Attorney Generals Office. So with that in mind, we are done taking questions for now. We are going to take off at this point. The death toll, sadly, increasing to 18 now. 13 people injured. Were getting a little more information about the victims and more information about the timeline. The key thing theyre highlighting here is that this is very much an active manhunt. Multiple agencies still on the ground looking for 40yearold robert card. He is considered armed and dangerous. Last night just a person of interest. Today they are calling him a suspect. In fact, theyve already charged him with eight counts of murder. Now remember, the death toll is 18 but what theyre saying is, theyre going to charge him now with eight people whove already been identified. Ten other victims, sadly, have not been identified. Lets bring in some of our correspondents. Our Senior Investigative reporter Aaron Katersky has been digging into the suspect here. Aaron, we did get a little more information today. Reporter we did. Authorities did say they are looking into prior Mental Health issues as they search for robert card and try to understand why he allegedly committed these murders with a high powered rifle that he had access to. We understand that for two weeks this past summer card had checked himself into a Mental Health facility. He had been reporting seeing visions in his head, hearing voices in his head. Also there were threats that he apparently made to shoot up a National Guard base in saco, maine. The authorities didnt specify but did say Mental Health issues are being explored, even as one of the Police Officials reported. This is an all hands on deck approach to try to locate robert card before he can cause any more carnage, whit. Aaron, as you were speaking, just a note to our viewers. Theyve been seeing these surveillance images of the suspect. This is as he was walking into that Bowling Alley. There was a childrens event that was taking place here. Witnesses telling us it was absolute horror. Parents were jumping on their kids, trying to shield them from the bullets. We dont have a ton of information about the ages of the victim, but we are getting a little bit more on the timeline and who, at least, some of these victims are. Lets bring in our trevor ault whos at a hospital here in lewiston, maine. Trevor . Reporter overnight we couldnt get a clear answer from the hospital as to how many people they were treating. We know now from officials, as weve mentioned over and over, 18 People Killed and 13 injured, over 30 victims. It speaks to the scope of this massacre. The fact that still now, almost 17 hours after those first shots were fired, more than half of the victims who have been killed have not been identifiedthe 13 people who have been injured, were waiting to gather information on their condition. We can glean a little from that information. It was feared that there were dozens of people who were wounded. 13. It is still horrifying. It should, hopefully, lighten the strain a little bit for these medical teams who are working to save their lives. In an area of this population, 13 simultaneous gun shot victims is going to cause a ton of strain. We know hospitals have been activating all available personnel, calling them in. Weve been watching as many doctors and nurses have shown up here. Theyre doing so walking into work past officers armed with long guns. This is happening as the community here is still on lockdown. Course, the medical staff has to do their job. Theyre more than capable and trained in treating gun shot victims. The fact that this community, after this awful tragedy, is largely forced to stay home when they have to grieve is unimaginable in the mid back with a first look at is the of an unimaginable tragedy. This tight knit community. People not even having the opportunity to grieve when gripped by fear. Businesses closed. Schools closed. People told to stay inside and lock their doors. I do want to bring back Aaron Katersky. We are getting more information about the timeline and also, as trevor pointed out there, a bit more information about some of the victims, too. The first shots were fired just before 7 00 p. M. 6 56 p. M. Was the first 911 call for a shooting at the Bowling Alley where you are. It was at that Bowling Alley where seven people were shot and killed. Six male, one female. Then a pool hall and bar where eight people were shot and killed, seven men inside, seven males inside that bar, one male outside. You do get a sense this shooting had multiple scenes and multiple movements from the alleged gun man, robert card. Three victims who were shot in some of these locations died at the hospital according to police and they are now working to identify all of them. And again, authorities still looking for the suspect, robert card. They did find his vehicle last night in a different part of town. A white subaru hatchback left with the door open and the lights on. But they have not been able to track him down. I do want to bring in our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas. Youve been digging into the big picture a little more here. This is shaping up to be the deadliest mass shooting so far of 2023. Reporter it is the worst mass shooting since the uvalde massacre involving those children last year, whit. Law enforcement officials are emphasizing that this man is extremely dangerous. You noticed during the press conference they emphasized, do not approach this man. The reason is because of the information they have that weve reviewed from Law Enforcement officials regarding his Mental Health status. A person who is highly trained in firearms, firearms instructor according to our sources. A person who, as aaron pointed out, had Mental Health crisis that had been reported. Whit, the main thing right now that sources are telling me, the reason you have the fbi, u. S. Marshals and atf involved is they need to try to pen this person in to make sure they do not get outside of that region, whit. Law enforcement Officials Say this comes amid a massive increase in the number of Mass Shootings. We used to average less than 400 in 2019. Ever since then weve averaged no fewer than 600 Mass Shootings per year. So far this year over 500 Mass Shootings, 601 People Killed, 2,300 injured. Whit . Just staggering numbers. The governor today, janet mills, pointing out, she said the people who live here, this tight knit community. She said, i wish i could take the pain off your heart, off your souls. Dont press the eject button. Thats a big nono. Dont touch that black button. All youre going to do is press on and off. Were going to turn the mixer on. Youre going right around the pumpkin. Its going to cut your job by twothirds. Its easy and fast. Millions appreciate that. You usually have glasses on. You did it beautifully. Youre the queen of it. Because i did it last year, i knew to stand back. You have a great idea. I love the salty seeds, but you also do a sweet seed. I do. Before you do that, you have to separate the seeds from the guts. Whats the trick . So simple. Put all the guck in a bowl. Fill it with water. Like a scientist experiment. The guts will them. How long does it take . Like two minutes. Maybe rinse one more time then dry. Do you dry them by putting them in the oven or just keep them out . Question. I dry them in the oven. Some people keep them out overnight. I like the oven, too. Then what do we do . We have those nutritious, delicious pumpkin seeds, lets jazz them up. This is melted butter and then we have cinnamon, brown sugar and vanilla. That sounds good. Then we have the savory which is olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper. In the oven five to ten minutes, you have a fabulous treat. You dont waste anything with the pumpkin. Whether youre hoping they learn something, you need to keep them busy or youre just having family time. The experts we spoke to said all those reasons are valid. This morning they have some tip for helping you choose what to turn on. Sunny day sweeping the clouds away reporter when it comes to tv for toddler, the possibilities seem endless and making a choice about whats best seems daunting. Hi. Reporter thats where those media moms come in. After years of researching childrens media, these moms and best friends are helping parents navigate decisions and the guilt we might feel about tv. The main misconception we hear is that kids watching tv are zoned out. Actually, they are zoned in on the content. They are cog tpheufrbly engaged and are learning from whatever they are watching. There are Research Based ways to think about how to select media content. We refer to that as the three cs. Reporter those three cs. Child, how old is your child . What are they interested in . Context. Where are they watching . Who is there and what kind of device are they using . As a general rule of thumb, we would say the bigger the device the better when it comes to watching video. Watching a show on the tv in the living room offers a different experience than in the childs hand. Reporter last c stands for content. In terms of the design of the show, we recommend looking for slower paced shows with fewer cuts. We also recommend shows that encourage togetherness.
