Patrol vehicles racing through the streets as a manhunt is now underway in maine after a mass shooting wednesday night. We did respond to the town of lewiston. Its going to be spare time recreation for an active shooter incident. We have active shooter of all injuries. Lpd on scene. Please say the Search Centers around this man, robert card, a former firearms instructor with a history of military service. Hes also a Mental Health history, including a two week stay this summer at a facility where he allegedly made threats about carrying out a shooting at a National Guard facility. His white subaru was recovered and but he was not card is considered armed and dangerous. He is a person of interest. Authorities say shootings appear to have unfolded at two locations, including a local bar and grill. And a Bowling Alley. Some of those scenes were described by first responders. A pregnant mother killed last night, police say, in a hit and run crash. It happened right by the westfield mall. The medical Examiner Office tells abc seven news it learned that a one day old has died at the hospital tonight. Initially, the baby was alive after this tragedy, but has now passed away. Were still waiting for more information. Abc seven news south bay reporter Lauren Martinez spoke with san joses mayor and has more on the grief. People are feeling there tonight. A group of loved ones gathered to mourn the sudden loss of a soon to be mother killed in a hit and run crash. At last report, police say her baby survived but remains in critical condition. San jose police say on tuesday, around 8 24 p. M, officers respond to a major injury crash at a busy intersection of blossom hill and winfield boulevard. Police say the womans vehicle was traveling eastbound on blossom hill when it crashed with a stolen sedan. Police say two men fled on foot immediately after the crash. Mayor matt mehan said its unimaginable, to be honest. When i heard the news, i was just stopped in my tracks. The San Jose Fire Department said they transport treated the pregnant woman to trauma. Mehan said no family should have to suffer this avoidable tragedy. Frankly, im also angry. We see far too many traffic related accidents. Police in oakley say theyve arrested a person in connection to the High School HouseParty Shooting that killed a 16 year old and injured three other teens. Investigators say 18 year old jason walaza from antioch was just booked into jail earlier this evening. The Us Marshals Service helped in the arrest. The shooting happened this past saturday night in oakley. Police say the 16 year old boy who was killed was a student at Liberty High School in brentwood. The suspects bail was set at 1. 1 million. If a deal is successful, many film and Television Series would be able to resume production. But for the moment, its all still on hold. Our next abc seven advancer at 11 is the growing pushback to Driverless Cars in california. Were now seeing Los Angeles City leaders question the viability of robo taxis in their town. Its all after the sudden dmv suspension yesterday of cruises driverless permit in San Francisco. And now a Los Angeles Council member is introducing a motion to limit the expansion of driverless vehicles in los angeles. Waymo currently operates its robo taxis there he is citing safety concerns or citing, rather, safety concerns and labor issues costing people jobs. If we can protect jobs and we can protect the safety, we can have a conversation. But right now, were not having that conversation. These autonomous vehicles, these auto taxis are not ready for prime time. The testing should not ■be done on the publc streets where our children, our grandchildren, our spouses are walking. With halloween less than a week away, San Franciscos Castro District is gearing up for a weekend full of festivities. The celebrations have become a part of the neighborhoods culture over the years. So tonight, abc seven News Reporter tim jonze went out to find what we can expect. This time around. The countdown is on until one of San Franciscos hallmark celebrations halloween in the castro. Its really everything to us. This is our high holiday, terry aston bennett is the president of the castro merchants association. She says this year will have a Family Friendly focus and feature everything from costume contest to Face Painting to spooky movie marathons. After being toned down for several years. Aston bennett hopes this weekend will help bring people back into the neighborhood. For many in the castro, though, halloween is a lot more than just a weekend to come out and have fun, though they tell me its a part of this rich neighborhoods identity that history stretches back decades all the way to the 1940s and includes part of aston bennetts family. She tells us her grandfather was the one who initially brought the holiday into the community. He would bring in a flatbed truck and wed have a kids costume contest and a pie eating contest. And he had made this enormous papier mache dinosaur called stanislaus that somebody would get into and parade the kids around the neighborhood. Organizers stressed that this years event will be far different from the nighttime halloween parties. The neighborhood became famous for in the past, sidewalks. Those were ultimately shut down after a mass shooting in 2006 and several other instances of violence. City Officials Say in order for that type of event to make a comeback, things would have to be radically different. I think were going to have to do a lot of planning. Its going to require a lot of Public Safety support, but a lot of thoughtfulness about how to how to roll it out in a way that is safe and respectful of the neighborhood. Tonight, we want to share some of those breakthroughs, starting with work to get safe housing for those who need it most. The oasis inn was a pilot for hotels in San Francisco to start sheltering the homeless. What started off as the city renting 25 rooms in 2020 has now grown to the entire Hotel Housing families in need. The Saint Anthonys foundation recently agreed to acquire the shelter and continue its partnership with the city with housing, the homeless. And im really proud that this is just another opportunity to ensure that families have a safe, affordable place to call home. The city of San Francisco so far funds 312 Affordable Housing units, a family shelter and traditional housing. Lets stay on that beat for our next abc7 building a better bay area breakthrough. Our team is checking in with state officials tonight. They want to see a complete overhaul with the way San Francisco approves new housing. A review from a top California Housing Department just found San Franciscos policies and politic shefs get in the way of construction of apartments and condos. But the breakthrough here is the report identifies a long list of actions for the city to correct the problems, including rewriting local laws, governing permits and appeals. If San Franciscos current rate continues, it will miss its goal to build more than 82,000 new homes by 2031. And our final abc7 building a better bay area breakthrough is looking ahead to help you get ready for this winters incoming storms. We are checking in with teams in the south bay to see all the work that theyve been doing to prevent last years storm surges from happening again throughout the past summer, weve worked at 50 locations across the county to maintain our waterways and clear them of debris. The strongest hurricane to hit mexicos coast on the pacific side obviously brought heavy rain, Flooding Issues across that region.
