Hes expected to appear in court for the first time today. The flight from Washington State had to make an Emergency Landing in portland. He landed and then about Ten Police Officers armed came on, walked straight to the back of the plane where i was sitting and detained him. And walked the gentleman off the plane. He looked dead in the eyes, almost. It was it was almost like he had a psychotic breakdown. The pilot was off duty. He was riding in the cockpit on a flight from everett, washington. He was basically commuting to San Francisco for his own flight out. Everett is just outside of seattle. And now the plane had to divert to portland, oregon and jobina. Were hearing from neighbors who say they cant believe this happened. Yes, reggie, so 44 year old Joseph Emerson is originally from Washington State but has lived in Contra Costa County since 2008. Emerson works for Alaska Airlines, which owns horizon air, which is the reason he was authorized to sit in the jump seat in the cockpit. Abc7 went to his home in Pleasant Hill yesterday. Neighbors say he was always kind toward them and they were shocked to hear what happened. Hes never had a negative statement about his job or anything like that. So yeah, hes very understanding and well of other people. And, you know, we have a grandson with special needs and hes very good to him. So the Airline PilotsAssociation Says pilots are continuously evaluated throughout their careers, adding, quote, while the investigation is just getting underway, it is important to remember here that the Airline Pilot profession in north america is one of the most highly vetted and scrutinized careers. The faa relies on pilots to selfreport any Mental Health conditions during annual visits with medical examiners. Records show emerson received his last medical clearance just last month. When emerson appears in court today, hes facing 83 counts of attempted murder, one for each person on board that plane. Hes also facing dozens of other charges as well. New developments about that off duty Airline Pilot who is set to face 83 charges of attempted murder today. He allegedly tried to crash an Alaska Airlines flight on the way to San Francisco. The pilot, 44 year old Joseph Emerson, who lives in the east bay, was riding in a cockpit of that flight. Soon after takeoff. Officials say emerson tried to cut the planes engines by pulling the fire extinguisher handles known as t handles the t handle, which is what this individual tried to pull on each engine actually turns the engine off and prepares it for a fire extinguisher. The problem is at high altitude, you can get the engines restarted at low altitude and that could be a fatal result. Federal officials tell abc news emerson got overwhelmed by the flight crew and subdued. He was subdued. He was then handcuffed to a seat. Passengers say Flight Attendants told them over the intercom that the suspect had a, quote, mental breakdown. So what about the passengers on the plane . We know the flight was full. 83 passengers were on board. We spoke with a woman from San Francisco who was flying with her boyfriend. Aubrey guevara was sitting toward the back of the plane. Her boyfriend was up in the very front seat, one a so she says the flight crew was so calm that he never knew what happened. And did you hear anything at all that raised red flags . Nothing nothing. Until the Flight Attendants announcement that said we had a situation we needed to prepare for landing. My boyfriend was up in the front so we werent sitting together and he slept through the whole thing. So that tells you how calm it was. So she says at the back of the plane, a Flight Attendant tried to calm the suspect, telling him, youre going to be okay. The abc7 news iteam has been looking into pilot Joseph Emersons history.
