Day. Spencer is here tracking the forecast. And we are in purple today. Yes, its glad spirit day celebrating lgbtq folk and antibully efforts. So we are hoping that you get in purple today as well on this thursday, october 19th. Yes, a lot going on and its a hot day. Oh, my gosh. Its going to be exceedingly hot. In fact, even at the beach there are hazards because of the high surf. So let me start with the heat advisory, which is in effect until 11 00 this evening. So that means all day and into the night, high temperatures will be in the upper 80s near the coast up to nearly 100in the inland areas. And this covers the entire bay area except portions of the immediate coastline on average way above average. High temperatures, as you point out. And of course, there is the risk of heat related illness under conditions like this. Now, right now, we have a beach hazard statement in effect, but at 7 a. M, this goes into effect. High surf advisory in effect until 7 00 this evening. Wave heights obviously are elevated. They could reach heights of 17 to 22ft. Risk of rip currents and dangerous swimming, swimming and surfing conditions. So bear that in mind if you think going to the beach is going to give you some relief. Right now, were already seeing temperatures rise well into the 60s. And of course, theyll continue rising throughout the day until they peak in the afternoon in the mid 80s. On the coast, low 90s right around the bay shoreline. That includes San Francisco with a high of 90 today, midnight is in the inland areas all around the bay area, possibly some record highs this afternoon will keep you posted on that. Right now over to jobina for a look at traffic. Thank you, spencer. Good morning, everyone. Unfortunately we are looking at an Investigation Underway in San Francisco. A muni bus crash involving a pedestrian an according to police, this happened around one this morning and still van ness at ofarrell is closed in both directions and they have not been given or giving us an estimated time as to when the lanes will reopen there. At the richmondsan rafael bridge. Unfortunately it was reported that this would reopen today and were talking about those three westbound lanes closed on 580 due to that deadly crash last week. That is still in place right now, the sigalert remains and in emeryville, live picture here showing you 80 headlights traveling in the westbound direction. This is one of our busiest stretches. This morning. Reggie and kumasi, thanks for being. And just piggybacking off of what jobina was just saying, this is what police are investigating this crash between a muni bus and a pedestrian in San Francisco. It happened just before 130 this morning on van ness avenue at ofarrell street. You can see all the damage that the impact left on the windshield of the muni bus. Right now, we dont know what led to this crash and we dont know the condition of the person hit today is the great shakeout. Its a drill that happens every year to make sure you are prepared for an earthquake. Some of you might have woken up or gotten woken up because of an alert overnight. It was sent out hours earlier than expected. Abc7 News Reporter lena howland live at the bart station in pleasanton with more on what you need to know about the drill today. Good morning, lena. Good morning, kumasi. Bart is one of several organizations across the state of california that will be participating in the great california shakeout in an effort to make sure that everyone is prepared for the next big earthquake. Now, some of you may have already gotten what appears to be a misfire of the alert sent out a full seven hours early at 319 this morning. Were still waiting to hear back from the myshake team on why that was sent out so early. But heres whats actually supposed to happen later on this morning. Right at 1019, anyone with a myshake app, including bart riders, will receive a notification thats a test. And in that moment, everyone participating will be asked to drop cover and hold on as if it was a real earthquake. Bart says once theyre shakealert is triggered, trains will automatically slow down to 27mph before coming to a very brief stop. Bart will make a system wide public announcement on all trains at that moment, encouraging riders to be prepared for earthquakes. And theyll also be testing their earthquake alarms to make sure theyre working. Its something my shake up users should already be familiar with after the app alerted folks across the bay area to an earthquake in isleton yesterday. Shakealert is operating very, very quickly. Shakealert is not prediction. Its saying an earthquake has happened and were going to let you know that the shaking is about to reach you. So everything is happening very, very quickly. This means we could use maybe half a second or one second of data from a station. And if that station happens to have a not great estimate, that can impact the system in this particular instance, we saw that the station closest to the epicenter overestimated the magnitude pretty significantly. And for the first time in recent years, bart will also be adding simulated damage inspections during the earthquake test with 60 engineers fanned out to all 50 stations when the alert goes off, theyll be inspecting things like walkways, support structures, elevators and escalators. Now, you can still participate in the great california shakeout today at 1019. Just make sure you have the myshake app downloaded and live in pleasanton. Lena howland , abc seven news. Thank you lena. And we want to make sure you and your family are prepared for whenever the next earthquake hits. You can go to abc7 news dot com slash prepare norcal. All the president making it clear the us stands with israel on jobina. He also announced this deal to provide help for civilians who are in gaza. Yes, reggie, so the deal announced by the president last night will allow trucks filled with humanitarian aid to cross into gaza from egypt, including basic supplies like water, food and medical supplies. Right now, nearly 150 trucks are filled with life saving aid and waiting at the border. But egypts president has only agreed to allow 20 through the border, according to the president , some trucks could be sent out as soon as tomorrow, but the roads in the war torn area need to be fixed before that happens. The president says all sides agree that the aid is needed and it needs to get to gaza. I got no pushback, virtually none. Let me say it again. I got no pushback from the israelis or from all the partners here, all the partners. The president s visit came shortly after the deadly hospital explosion in gaza that killed hundreds of people, sources confirmed with abc news the rocket was fired by Palestinian Palestinian militants, but arab leaders accused israels military of bombing the hospital, which triggered protests across the region. However, he has since been cleared of any wrongdoing. Well, its going to be a hot day ahead. Right now, were looking at satellite radar, composite image. You can see a huge ridge of high pressure. The dominant feature in our weather right now. So these are the weather headlines. Heat peaks today. Record highs in the afternoon are likely heat advisor be in effect through tonight. We can expect a much cooler pattern this weekend with scattered showers likely. But this is what we have to contend with today. A heat advisory is in effect for virtually all of the bay area except portions of the immediate coastline. Temperatures will range from upper 80s near the coast to near 100 inland. Thats well above average. And of course, the hot weather like this may cause heat related illnesses. We also have rough surf right now. So if youre thinking of going to the beach, a beach hazard statement is in effect right now. But from 7 a. M. To 7 p. M, itll be even rougher with a High Surf Advisory in effect, large breakers may reach heights of 17 to 22ft. Obviously, the risk of rip currents and dangerous sneaker waves. Heres a view looking out over San Francisco right now where its 63 degrees. We have low to mid 60s at oakland mountain view, san jose, low 50s at palo alto and half moon bay. Looking down onto the bay from mt. Tam, we have temperature readings in the north bay and the east bay right now only in the 50s with those temperatures will rise sharply. So these are the projected highs for this afternoon, 84 at half moon bay, 90 in San Francisco, 91 in oakland, all around the bay shoreline, well see low 90s and mid to upper 90s in virtually all of our inland areas. Inland areas is going to be a very hot day. It would be a great idea to try to avoid exposure to the sun and the heat and to stay hydrated, drink lots of fluids. The units will feature a lot of the same amenities as other tiny home projects. However, theyre going to be solar powered with limited hookups to allow them to be moved off site when that lease is up. Now not everybody is happy about this. Some say south san jose already has more tiny homes than other parts of the city. We have lost trust and disappointed in our community. Representative and mayor. Our goal would be to get this new site built, have those encampments which are there nearby, those people move into these things and clear out the unkempt land and hopefully never have another encampment appear in that area. Construction is set to begin sometime before the middle of next year. The us Postal Service is hiring and today the agency is holding job fairs at at least 50 post offices around the bay area. A new sign is going to be built right now in Golden Gate Park. And its supposed to have you do the opposite of what it says. So its going to be a giant no dancing sign that looks like this. Itll be up by the promenade, which is near the skating area. And this is a rule thats meant to be broken because when you look closer to the sign, youll see there are smaller messages on it, nine short stories of peoples lives in impacted by oppression. The art piece was on display at burning man this year. The 20 foot tall installation will be there for at least a year. Fashion, food and culture taking center stage in the east bay. Visit oakland kicked off a five day event called oakland style, highlighting local art in many forms and jobina and i were there at the first event last night. It was called a taste of style. It featured couture inspired dishes by chefs and an oakland fashion show. The citys tourism and Marketing Organization says it wants to channel the energy of new york fashion week. I feel like it was even more than that because we had the fashion, we had the food , we had the wine, we had the vibe. Yes. It was such a good event. It was really, really fun. And each chef made their dish to go along with the design of their choosing. So like the Louis Vuitton dish was like a classic. It was like a steak. I had the vegetarian version, so i dont know what the main what the meat dish was, but it was like a really it was a good meat. I didnt have it right now. Yes yeah. Like, come on, dig out the pictures. Let me. And then i had the veggie jambalaya for. Oh, you got the menu. Perfect. I knew i was getting ready to talk about this invitation. Was there wine . Because that spencers thing and champagne . Yeah, both. I should have been invited. Cocktails . Yes. And this out the morning. All food sounds so good, right . Yes, it was great. We had a time. Thats awesome. And then jobina, youre hosting the event tonight . Yeah, tonight at the castle hotel on broadway in oakland. And we are doing. Its called stylish cocktails and conversations. So youll have chefs and designers and musicians. Its gonna be a lot of fun. Lets see. Sleep early or go have some fun. Youve been invited. Okay now you know what to do. Well make it through. Yes. Hey, ive got some good news and bad news. Okay . All right. The good news is this is just a one day heat spike. Okay the bad news is its today. Yeah. So lets take a look at whats happening with our weather and this is a spare the air day, by the way. The air quality has diminished a bit from poor to moderate is about as good as its going to get today. And a large reason for that is, of course, of course is the heat. Heres what to expect today. The heat peaks today. So one day, well, its the second of two days of heat record highs likely today, though, so even hotter than yesterday. Heat advisory will be in effect through tonight. Itll be much cooler this weekend with a chance of some scattered showers. Thats good news. But the heat advisory is an important thing to keep in mind. Its in effect for the entire bay area except portions of the immediate coastline. High temperatures will range from upper 80s to near 100 and the hottest spots. Hot weather, of course, like this may cause heat related illnesses. So try to limit your exposure to the heat. High surf advisory goes into effect at 7 a. M. Will remain in effect until 7 p. M. This evening. Large breakers may reach heights of 17 to 22ft, a risk of rip currents and dangerous sneaker waves is there, of course, dangerous swimming and surfing conditions. So even if youre trying to escape the heat and get to the beach, there are concerns at the beach as well. Right now were looking at temperature readings in the 60s. And of course, theyll be rising rapidly once the sun is high in the sky. So this afternoon, look for highs of 84 at half moon bay, 90 here in San Francisco, lots of low 90s around the bay shoreline and almost all of our inland areas will have highs in the mid or mid to upper 90. Now, good news is tomorrow things start to cool down sharply. Therell be further cooling over the weekend. Saturday going into sunday. So just bear in mind, its a one day heat spike.
