But so far, we still have three lanes blocked in the westbound direction and wide load vehicles are not allowed on the bridge. The city is now taking an aggressive stance against street vendors, all street vending on Mission Street and around bart stations will soon be banned. Abc7 News Reporter lena howland live in San Francisco with more on how these sales are putting people in danger. Lena well, come november street vending will soon be a thing of the past. Off of Mission Street here in San Francisco. And thats because supervisor Hillary Ronen says the sale of stolen stuff is putting other people in danger. For now, her office says theyve seen Mission Street flooded with large scale fencing operations over the last year and a half, which involves the buying and selling of stolen goods. Just last week, police chief bill scott said investigators recently. Recovered 17,000 worth of stolen goods all being sold on Mission Street from lululemon and victorias secret. And these fencing operations have led to some major safety concerns. As an aide to supervisor, ronen says, the situation is so bad that city workers fear for their safety. When asking vendors for their permits. At the point where our public works inspectors are now wearing bulletproof vests while theyre walking the streets, they are escorted by police. But that is the level of danger thats out there for city workers. And they have been subject to attacks as assaults, verbal and physical assaults. And so it really makes it difficult for them to do their job. San Francisco Police chief bill scott is well aware of the problems in the area along with other city leaders. He blames a 2018 state law that they say basically decriminalized street vending for some of the recent problems with stolen goods. Now, supervisor supervisor ronens office says they are working to try to come up with an alternate indoor space for permitted vendors to legally sell their goods. We are taking something to the ballot. Were going around the board of supervisors. Were going around the Police Commission in were going straight to the people of San Francisco. Mayor breed, introduce her new safer San Francisco measure. Yesterday, it would roll back some of the Police Commissions restrictions on things like pursuits and the use of surveillance technology. Breed says the measure would also limit police paperwork, giving officers more time to patrol the streets. The mayor says shes putting this initiative on the march 2024 ballot. The Police Commission says they are in full support of breeds plan. Mayor breed is also pushing for a controversial drug Treatment Initiative that will be on the ballot in march. If its passed, the measure would require single adults with a Substance Use disorder for to take part in treatment programs in order to continue receiving welfare from the city and county. It would also require people in assistance programs like food stamps to undergo screening for dependency on a legal drugs, Financial Assistance would be revoked if people refuse help with their substance abuse. Well, supervisor ronens office says over the last year and a half they have seen Mission Street flooded with illegal fencing operations that were very much large scale. And by fencing operations we mean the selling and buying of stolen goods. Now San Francisco police chief bill scott says legitim vendors want to be able to sell their items and make a living. But there have been a number of people taking advantage. And now, he says markets have exploded where this never existed.
