New explosions this morning in gaza as Israeli Forces position themselves along the border ahead of an expected ground offensive that could happen at any time. Israeli Prime Minister netanyahu meeting with soldiers as they prepare for battle. Their goal, to wipe out hamas militarily and politically. After eight days this conflict has killed more than 2,300 palestinians and 1,300 israelis, injuring close to 12,000 people total on both sides. Hundreds of thousands of civilians in gaza rushing to get out of harms way ahead of the promised assault, facing shortages of food and water. Right now, tension is rising on both sides as israel prepares for the next phase of the conflict. The u. S. Ordering a second Aircraft Carrier to the region, the uss eisenhower. In addition to that Aircraft Carrier, there is also a Marine Expeditionary unit just off the coast, about seven ships, 1,200 marines. They have attack helicopters as well. And theyre going to help facilitate the evacuation of american citizens from the israeli port of haifa starting tomorrow. Now, this is about as close as we can get to the front right now. All morning weve been hearing intensification of artillery as israel prepares to push into gaza. This morning, israel poised to strike into the gaza strip with nearly 400,000 troops. Israeli Prime Minister netanyahu on the ground with israeli troops asking if theyre ready for the next stage. A probable incursion into the gaza strip by land, sea, and air. In a nationally broadcast address, Israeli Military offering this stark warning, saying we will strike ghazi city very broadly soon. And hamas warning israel, this is what awaits you when you enter gaza, releasing this video showing fighters firing rpgs at tanks at pointblank range. With a flurry of leaflets falling from the sky, israeli claiming hamas is blocking civilians from evacuating, saying they want civilians as human shields. But the roughly 400,000 people heeding the order not guaranteed safety as they make the perilous journey south. A truck of civilians was hit by shelling friday. The wounded were carried on stretchers and on top of shoulders. This Police Officer was on security at the deadliest attack, the music festival. We met him in the hospital and showed him videos of the attack. He tried to show us exactly where he was. Translator thats exactly where we were. Reporter with the bullets and rpgs coming in, he found a dirt road, leading about 500 partygoers to safety. He got a long gun, joined a friend, and went back into the fight. Translator we want peace, but when the enemy comes, we know how to fight as one. Reporter out of ammo, his lower body riddled with bullets. He had a couple bullets in his gun and held it in his hand in case they came because he was going to end his own life. Reporter he lost consciousness and was evacuated and is now with his wife. Israel is saying its ready to go into the gaza strip, but it pulled away last night and again this morning, not ideal for a Ground Invasion and not ideal for covering it from the air. You have to remember that gaza is essentially enclosed on all sides. There is nowhere for hamas to run inside. So, israel is trying to be, i guess, as patient as possible not to rush anything in terms of the Ground Invasion. Gio . Talk about the timing for a second here. You were mentioning the weather here. We know that Israeli Forces are standing by along the border. They are just waiting for that order for a Ground Invasion. Its been hours since israel said that would begin soon. What are you hearing right now about this timing specifically . Reporter theres a lot of psychological warfare involved in this, gio. They dont want to telecast exactly when theyre going to go in, and time seems to be on israels side. We forget there was nowhere to run in gaza. It is essentially a giant prison. There is no border exit anywhere. Its locked by the sea to the west. Theyre not going anywhere and theyll get more entrenched. Theyve created tunnels for 30 years now. I think israel is trying to bide its time, wait for the right moment, and make sure it doesnt make any grave errors when it pushes in. That is an inevitability at this point. Israel hasnt lost a Ground Invasion of gaza in 20 years. The challenges you just mentioned, a small, densely populated area, concerns about the hidden tunnels by hamas, it could come at a high human cost on both sides. Reporter a huge human cost. The fighting will be intense. Israel hasnt fully overtaken the gaza strip since 1973. We know the fighting will be bloody and hamas has those tunnels, where they keep their militants, their weapons, and possibly hostages. Theres grave concern for civilians getting caught in the cross fire, but israel said it will eliminate hamas politically and militarily no matter the cost. We know that is their goal. With israel planning to invade gaza any day now, idf Officials Say extra preparations are under way to make sure the iron dome is ready to defend the country. This morning, israel preparing for an imminent invasion of the gaza strip. The same plans are in place for an extensive attack by land, air, and sea. We spent time with the idf as they get ready for a significant ground operation more than a week after the hamas attack on israel. What are you expecting . How are you preparing . Of course, we understand part of the reality of hamas strategy is to pummel israel with rocket fire. The soldiers here and the systems are absolutely prepared to provide the best defense possible. Reporter and israel telling us its defense system, the iron dome, is ready for its biggest test. The iron dome is one of the most important tools that israel has in its arsenal, and at war, thousands of rockets being fired from gaza, its never had to work harder. Idf spokesperson libby weiss telling me the iron dome is intercepting more rockets than ever before, 6,000 in last week. The idf saying extra preparations include setting up new logistical bases. Battalions are being equipped with additional weapons. And 360,000 reservists are being called up ahead of the land offensive. We know israel has carried out what it calls localized raids to clear areas of hamas ahead of a fullscale operation on the ground. Thank you, britt clennett. Now to the desperate race to get out of northern gaza, hundreds of thousands of people heading south, including americans, to reach the egyptian border. Its important to remember that there are only two ways out of gaza, one crossing the border into israel, and thats not happening, and the other is crossing the border where we are into egypt. Thats what thousands of people are trying to do right now. But according to a source in Egypt Security forces, no one is being allowed to cross from gaza into egypt, the border effectively closed, although publicly egyptian officials have denied closing the border. They say israeli air strikes on the gaza side have made it not functional. No matter the cause, the takeaway is no one is leaving. Thousands of people are trying to flee gaza creating a desperate situation. Among those people, hundreds of people with foreign passports, including u. S. And british nationals, both the United States and the united kingdom, have told their citizens to move toward that Border Crossing as they work to convince the Egyptian Government to open the border, even temporarily. The u. S. Has told it citizens the border could open at any moment and to be ready to leave, but as of now, that hasnt happened. Letting foreign nationals across the border is one thing, but its important to remember the vast majority of people in gaza do not have those kinds of foreign pass ports, and for them the situation is even worse. Egypts president has publicly expressed reluctance to accept palestinians trying to flee gaza, saying the country already hosts millions of refugees from other places, calling it a National Security risk, and by allowing palestinians to flee, it could mean, quote, an end to this palestinian cause. It is important that gazas people remain standing and on their own land. So, with a very fluid situation here in egypt, one that could literally change at any moment. Matt rivers, thanks to you. Lets start with the expected Israeli Ground incursion of gaza. What are your sources there on the ground telling you about the scope and objective of this dangerous and highrisk military operation . Reporter i think the objective is to get rid of hamas completely. Thats a very difficult objective given the civilian population, which i know youve already talked about. But going into an area like that, a very, very densely populated area, ive been there before myself and seen it up close, it is nearly impossible to avoid civilians, especially as they try to evacuate. So that is something that the whole world is truly watching. One of the many concerns in all this, we know the u. S. Is sending a second Aircraft Carrier to the region. Youre speaking with white house National Security adviser Jake Sullivan on your show later today. What is the role the u. S. Is expected to play in this war effort . Reporter i think you know that antony blinken, the secretary of state, has been around the middle east all week, talking to diplomats around here and other Foreign Ministers and other secretaries of state, trying to get them to listen to the u. S. , saying, can you help with this evacuation, can you take some of these refugees. Frankly, they arent getting far in that effort. Egypt, for example, has blocked the ways out of gaza, so there are really no places for these people to go. Antony blinken and others in the u. S. Are also urging the israelis to use cautions to not harm civilians if they can help it. Martha, what we have here, youve been covering this conflict for decades. In fact, we have this photo of you to and some images reporting from israel back in 1988 that we pulled from your instagram account. A little perspective here. How much of a setback is this moment when it comes to any prospect of a lasting peace . Reporter you know, whit, i think its completely dead. I dont know how they can possibly have any peace here now. Some of the people i met back in 1988 and i did spend some time with the idf there and also palestinians and also israelis and also American Families they were so hopeful back there that they could all live together, that they could live with some sort of peace. But that has not happened, and i have kept in touch with many of those people over these 35 years, and it has done nothing but separate them even more during the years. We talked to one israeli this week, one of the people i spoke to in 1988, and he said he basically just wants revenge for what has happened. Whit . Sadly, some sobering thoughts. Shell Interview White House National Security adviser Jake Sullivan about the effort to retrieve american hostages, plus the latest on israels war operation with Israel Defense forces spokesperson the lieutenant colonel. The majority of americans appear to continue support for israel. According to a new abc news ipsos poll, 49 of americans say the u. S. Is doing about the right amount to support israel in its war with hamas, while 29 say the u. S. Is doing too little, and 18 say the country is doing too much. Abc White House Correspondent maryalice parks joins us more from the north lawn with more. Reporter good morning. The president undoubtedly aware of these politics, but hes also talked in real moral terms about this conflict. Hes expressed a sense of moral obligation to help israel, such a close ally, after such a clearly gruesome and brutal attack. Right now the white house is focused on getting more military aid to israel and getting americans home, wherever they are, in israel or in gaza. The embassy just this morning encouraging americans in gaza to move south in anticipation of that expected ground operation. Obviously, a big focus still on getting any hostages out who are being held by hamas. Then the big worry on getting aid in. This is tricky diplomacy. The white house does not want to look like it is telling israel what to do, but also they very much acknowledge the dire situation that innocent people of gaza are facing right now. The reality is u. S. Support for israel will be tested if a Ground Invasion and air strikes continue to harm and displace civilians in gaza. Secretary of state blinken is still on his extensive trip in the region. Overnight, he met with the saudi crown prince, bin salam. And yesterday, we learned that the president not only spoke with Prime Minister netanyahu again at the white house, but he also talked for the First Time Since this conflict broke out with the president of the palestinian authority, mahmoud abbas. We are told the two men talked about how to keep the violence from spreading to the west bank, a major concern here, how to make sure there is not a greater eruption in violence. A major concern. Shed been preparing and collecting things in her jail cell, even making certain requests in those final hours before she bolted. Reporter this morning were learning more about kaitlin armstrongs brazen escape from the custody of texas prison officials. Watch as armstrong in her blackandwhite jump suit tries scaling this fence. Shes accused of murdering a pro cyclist, anna mariah, wilson, last year, who officials believe armstrong was romantically involved with her boyfriend. An affidavit detailing the 35yearold put in a medical request restricting the use of leg restraints, then utilized an injury complaint, getting herself an appointment outside the prison in austin, texas. Law enforcement says as they escorted the former Yoga Instructor from the Doctors Office to the car, she bolted. Typically when we have highprofile crimes, this type of information about a defendant can be very damaging, because anytime anyone is seeking to escape custody typically points toward their guilty behavior. Reporter Authorities Say she attempted to jump a sixfoot fence, and one officer pulled her ground, causing both to fall to the ground. Advised her to get on her feet, but she began to flee again. She ran a mile away, stripping off her prisoners uniform and freeing a hand before being caught. Officials later discovered she had a metal pin and dental floss in her cell and they were manipulated in a way that could remove a handcuff. Officials combed through video which they say kaitlin had been exercising vigorously for months. This affidavit is all about mrs. Armstrongs attempt to escape authorities and to go somewhere else. She was clearly intentional about trying to get away from authorities. Reporter it is not the first time kaitlin has been accused of running away. Police say days after the alleged murder, she used someone elses passport to flee to costa rica, changing her appearance to look like the photo in it. She was caught six weeks later and has pleaded not guilty to initial charges. Trial is set for october 30th. Just an unbelievable story. Time now for the weather and somara theodore.
