But with all of this preparation and the retaliations under way a new threat from hamas. They have 100 hostages in gaza d are threatening to kill them one by one on video in front of the world if israel continues to strike. Overnight here, israel carrying out what it calls a complete siege of the gaza strip cutting off power and blocking food and water being delivered to gaza. Prime minister netanyahu responding to the shocking surprise attacks by hamas militants saying, quote, what its done to our enemies will resonate for generations. This morning the Israeli Military saying the bodies of at least 1,500 hamas militants have been found along the border, killed in fighting with Israeli Forces. Israel now bombarding gaza with a hail of rockets. The area controlled by hamas is home to roughly 2 million palestinians one of the most densely Populated Areas in the world. Rescuers now digging for miracles. Is there anyone alive, this man shouts, from this pile of debris a 6monthold pulled out, still alive. No one feels safe. It happens everywhere, any time. Reporter instead when the brothers got there, just outside their home, their worst nightmare. We saw mom dead lying there bullets over her whole body, blood. A package she wanted to bring to the kids. Reporter this is the final photo ever taken of their mother, holding her new grandchild at the hospital, just a day after the baby was born. This morning a clearer picture of how hamas was reportedly planning the attack on israel secretly for months, now releasing this video showing fighters training on motorized paragliders practicing their dissent into israel. Some of the first messages by hamas received after 6 a. M. Saturday striking multiple targets, including a Music Festival, where hundreds were killed. You can see them running for their lives amid rockets and gun fire. We met one young man who saw his friend shot and killed in front of him. He was shot in the arm and leg. He doesnt know how he survived, now in this tel aviv hospital. Telling me he hid in a shelter with 30 others. He estimates 20 of them did not get out alive. One of my friends, she got choked by the smoke. She tried to run away and got stuck with the terrorists. They started shooting. Reporter the hamas militants kidnapping more than 100 Israeli Citizens during this deadly raid. Armed extremists going door to door targeting indiscriminately, killing them. How can you describe how it feels to see your 85yearold grandmother being kidnapped. Reporter her grandmother, seen in this video surrounded by militants, was abducted. She now worries how long she can survive without her medication. We see her with her pride, sitting with her head up. I think thats the kind of person my grandmother was. The kind of person that will never let them see that shes hurt or scared. The terrorists came into my house. They bombed the door. Reporter she and her friend, an american citizen, both feared they would be killed by the militants. The american was killed while trying to protect her. He took all the bullets and all the gun shots. They pulled me out of the closet. Reporter the militants then capturing her along with two of her neighbors sons, both just 4 years old. Taking them to gaza. But somehow later releasing them. Miraculously returning the boys safely to their father. The boys mother still has not been found. We are really praying, we hope she will come back home. We havent been able to contact her. Reporter as you can see, the rising toll really on both sides here. The numbers here in israel are just staggering. More than 900 dead including those 11 americans. Israel says they have now hit multiple targets including a residence used by hamas, to a mosque being used as a command center. The toll in gaza rising as well, more than 700 dead. Robin, as you know, we just reported there about the other concern here. Activity on the lebanon border now with israel as well. Real concern over hezbollah and whether or not this could potentially become a wider conflict here. It does appear heading in that direction of escalation. David, thanks so much. Robin, thanks. Is surging supplies, weapons and air defenses to israel. The massive Aircraft Carrier uss gerald ford packed with fighter jets is being deployed off the coast of israel, with additional war ships also in the mediterranean. All of them there as a deterrent to iran an its proxies, especially the lebanon based hezbollah, which, like hamas, the u. S. Designated a terrorist organization. A u. S. Defense official says the u. S. Is deeply concerned that hezbollah could make the wrong decision and start a second front in this conflict. But whether the presence of an Aircraft Carrier remains to be seen. Certainly iran and hezbollah know the capabilities of the u. S. And still this morning iran is praising the attacks by hamas although denying direct involvement. But the savagery, as one official called it, hostage taking, executing families, are reminiscent of the tactics used by the terror group isis. Yes, they are. Thank you very much. Lets bring in john kirby. John, let me start where martha left off right there. What is the latest on iran and hezbollah and whether theyre prepared to open up a second front in this war . It remains unclear. Obviously, we are concerned about the possibility that now a Northern Front can be opened up if hezbollah decides to get engaged. Theres an exchange of rocket fire but no signs theyre all in, as it were. Were watching this closely. And reason why we put those forces in the Eastern Mediterranean is, as martha said, to send a very strong message of deterrence to any other actor that the u. S. Will not tolerate other people trying to take advantage of the situation in israel. It is also a strong message of how deeply President Biden feels about protecting our own National Security interests. How much more do we know about iran and the planning of this attack . No evidence that says they were involved specifically with these attacks and participating, planning, resourcing. That said, george, clearly they have supported hamas for many, many years resourcing, training, capabilities. Certainly retorically the last 24 hours they have been supporting what hamas has done. Theres a degree of complicity by iran but, again, no specific tactical evidence that says they were involved in these attacks. United states supporting ukraine, israel. Do we have the resources to combat, to fight this war on both fronts . Yes, we do. We are a big enough country, Strong Enough country. Because of this war, ukraine certainly revitalized certain aspects of the Defense Industry here in the United States. We have the capability to do it. Weve been supporting israel even before these attacks. We are going to keep consulting with congress to do both. What more do we know this morning about american casualties . We know 11 americans have been killed. Sadly, george, we are preparing for the very distinct possibility that there will be more unfortunate, more deaths for american citizens here. We also have a number of americans we know are wounded and another number which keeps changing that are unaccounted for. We just dont know where they are. Their families are worried. Theyre reaching out to the state department. Were trying to get a handle on where they are and how they are. Sadly, we have to accept the grim possibility that some of those unaccounted for americans could be among though being held hostage. Thats what i was going to ask you next. Do we have any specificity on that . No, we dont, george. Were working at this hard, talking to the israelis every day, almost every hour, trying to get more information about the americans that are unaccounted for. We just dont know where they are. If there are american hostages, what can we do . We have already just because there is a hostage crisis. Weve already reached out to israeli counter parts, offered assistance in the form of intelligence, information, as well as hostage recovery expertise that we have here in the United States. Offering that to the israelis. That offer still stand. Were still moving in that direction. It remains to be seen if theres americans in that group, what more can be done. Clearly the safety and security of americans are a top priority for President Biden. We have seen that in the past. Well continue to work on this hard. If theres americans being held hostage, well do Everything Possible to get them home to their families. Are we prepared to make a deal for them . The president here at the white house has been huddling with his National Security team, working the phones, reaching out to americas top allies as he tries to contain this crisis. In remarks at the white house later this afternoon, he will likely again warn others not to try and take advantage of these attacks. That is a message aimed in large part at iran, who the white house said is complicit for its support of hamas. All of this crisis is up ending President Bidens Foreign Policy goals right as we head into an election year. He had been working to broker that Historic Deal between israel and saudi arabia, the white house was hoping it would stablize the region, a deal hamas was likely trying to derail and a deal, for now, isnt going anywhere. Over 700 People Killed in three days, at least 140 of them children, according to gazas health ministry. Dazed residents facing a fourth day of attacks from israeli fighter jets, as hamas still hits israeli cities, something weve witnessed first hand. Just heard the air raid siren. You can hear the sound of explosion. Hamas controlling the gaza strip since 2007, one of the most densely populated places on the planet. Living conditions were already desperate with over half the population in poverty. Israel imposing a blockade since hamas took over. But now since that deadly attack in israel, it cutting water, electricity and food. Lot of palestinians will blame their situation on israels blockade but also have become frustrated over the years with hamas inability to find a way out for gazas suffering. Reporter Hamas Movement prescribed as a terrorist group by israel and the u. S. , its military wing killed at least 900 israelis this week. Its leader is mohamed daif. We are now seeing all the signs that israel is preparing a large land operation. We are seeing tanks and men moving into the area. Life was already difficult for people inside the gaza strip. This blockade, these new restrictions, are being imposed for the first time. The u. N. And others are expressing concern about the safety of Israeli Citizens and palestinian citizens. The reality is, if those tanks roll in across the border into gaza, the threat for collateral damage, civilian deaths are only going to grow. George . Ian, thanks. Lets bring in steve ganyard. Steve, lets pick up where ian just left off. Israel calling up 300,000 reservists, their largest callup ever. Weve got the tanks amassing on the border. What does a ground incursion look like . Thats hard to say, george, because we dont know what the intent will be. It could be a punitive expedition going in to root out hamas as much as they can. I dont think it will be a full takeover of gaza, 2 million people. Thats a large area. The Israeli Defense force cant afford to commit that much. So well watch how the buildup occurs around gaza, then well be able to see what the actual intent of the invasion will be. As ian said United States and israel labeled hamas a terrorist group, but for years there was a belief that somehow we could work with hamas to administer gaza. That seems to be out the window now. What do you make of this change in tactics by hamas . Yeah. Its really evolved. Netanyahu called them isis today. The group has evolved over time. Remember we talked about why this intelligence failure occurred. One was complacency. It was also deception. Hamas was able to deceive the israelis into a sense of complacency, by keeping gates open so workers could come in and out of israel. By not attacking. Israel moved more troops up towards the west bank. Also shown an ability to do come complex operations we havent seen in the past. Weve seen them do individual things like paragliders or sea borne attacks. This is the first time we have seen them bring it all together. On top of that, the potential coronation with the irgc, and with hezbollah shows a sophistication that we have never seen out of hamas. Whats difficult to figure out is hamas end game. They had to have known an attack would spark a massive, massive retaliation by israel. That seems to be coming. So what do they hope to gain . Yeah, thats hard to say, george. Is it prestige among terrorist groups . Is it standing . More support from iran . They may have overstepped, as you know, at this point, because it will give israelis the reason to go in and eliminate them as a terrorist group. We also have to ask israel, what is their intent . We heard netanyahu talk about remaking the middle east. Talking about we are at war. What does that mean . What is the end state . What does victory look like . He will be asking for great sacrifices from the israeli people here in the days and weeks to come. Hes going to need to explain to them what final victory will look like. Your view on whether hezbollah will open up this second front . Yeah. Thats a danger, george. I think if israel goes after iran, they said they will if they find complicity in this attack, hezbollah will be forced to attack from the north. This is a very dangerous period. I recently took a trip to my beloved birth place of tuskegee, alabama, and met up with my dear friend Lionel Richie a fellow tuskegee native to talk about our roots, the communitys rich history and where lionel first started making music as the singer gets ready to kick off his Las Vegas Residency an a new season, of course, of American Idol. Hello is it me youre looking for hello, my friend. Thats a good sign. I like it. No place like home for Lionel Richie and me in tuskegee, alabama. Your mother taught my siblings. Whats it like for you to be back to your roots . This is more than just a birth place. We grew up in history. And so things that people are trying to read about, it was every day. Everybody had title and merit. The city of nearly 9,000 people, home to historic figures like rosa parks, educator and civil rights leader booker t. Washington, and the proud tuskegee airmen. Just imagine in this community, you couldnt vote, but everybody had a plane. Go figure that. Among the first africanamerican aviators fighting for this country during world war ii. My father, colonel lawrence e. Roberts. They had a standard for all of us. Failure is not an option. My daddy said that. I got chills. He used to say it was not an option. Failure was not an option. Here at the tuskegee air men National Historic site, a moment to relive our roots with the troops original training plans. These are parachutes. They were packed, mainly by women. And a chance to get handson. It has to fit in the bag. Im glad they werent depending on us. Our troops were definitely dependent on you. Lionel joined by katy perry and luke bryan, receiving a warm tuskegee welcome. This is our seventh year together as a group, 22 years of American Idol. They came up with this wonderful idea, lets go back to where all of the judges came from. Of course, i get to show off tuskegee. To bring it back here for me is a chance to get them to understand the roots of another kind of black america that people dont get to hear and talk about every day. Taking them to learn about the legacy of a tuskegee air man, also known as the red tails. Then stopping by lionels childhood home. The rumor around town is lionel has been working on that house 50 years. True. Theres a back story to the house. Booker t. Washingtons sister is on the deed to the house. That was the house that booker t. Gave to my grandmother and grandfather. Can you imagine . Katy and luke spending time where lionel spent most of his early years. Formerly tuskegee institute, but now tuskegee university. While you were here, musical group, winning some talent shows. But lionel, did you have any idea the level of success you would achieve . Here i am talking about black people taking over the world. They wanted to help me out of a side door. Five years later, we hit. What im surprised at is that it kept going. To think of my dad as 19 years old, getting on that train, going from howard university, dropping out of school and going down there. I got emotional, every time i land, because i think of him smiling. Of course, really enjoying the plane that im in. [ laughter ] just kidding. Just kidding. Its wonderful. I just think of him just cheering us all on. And the new season of American Idol returns to abc in early 2024. A delicious dinner you might call a lazy lasagne. Welcome back. Always love when youre here. Thank you. Lets get right into this lazy lasagne. You start with two meats . We have a mix of ground beef and italian sausage. This is the base for the ragu. Gosh. Im going to add they look like minimeat loafs. Exactly. Were making them into meat balls which allows better browning in the pan. We avoid steaming. This is a great way to make sure you get nice caramelized meat. You divide them into four. Four big meat balls. They will get broken up. This is just the beginning. Got it. And then once theyre seared and out of the pot we add our aromatics. Same pot . Yeah. Fennel, celery. Onion. I like the idea of fennel. Fennel is a little different. Bunch of chopped herbs. Just sprinkling them in. To taste . Yeah. This whole book is about cooking to taste and cooking to intuition. Its not necessarily about measuring everything precisely. But tasting as you go. Is there something you wanted to add . You can add a splash of oil to get it going. Thank you very much. Once those are cooked down, they look like this. They smell so good. Thats when we add some other secret ingredients. When i was reading the recipe, there are ingredients one wouldnt think of for this dish like miso. I add miso paste in addition to tomato paste in my ragu. Gives it more of a depth of flavor that i think is nice. I smell vino. White wine . Go ahead. Were adding both white and red. All of it . Yeah. More is more. Glug glug. I feel like you dont need to choose which one to use. Sometimes red can overpower. Lastly, we add the meat balls. Now the meat balls have been crumbled. Those are back in. This is where you get marscapone cheese involved. Yes. Thats the other little deviation from the norm. I have the finished pasta here that is made out of broken lasagne noodles. This is where it gets lazy. Doesnt have to be perfectly layered. This book is about breaking the rules. People say not to break pasta. Break it and put it in. Do it, molly then we finish it with marscapone. Noodle goes in dry . Go. No. The noodle gets cooked in pasta water. More is more. Yeah, more is more. We just finish it here, as all with pasta, if you want to add pasta cooking water to loosen it up. How much should we save and why do we do that . As a general rule of thumb one cup of pasta water before you drain the pasta. That way you can add a splash here or there if the sauce starts to get tight. Theres nothing worse than dry pasta. Just helps with that yummy thing. Softness. Great addition to your lazy lasagne. We have another qr code you want to talk about.
