Synagogues, Community Groups and israelis in the bay area are banding together to fundraise and build support. Many of them have direct ties, of course, to friends and family in israel who have been killed, taken hostage or injured. Abc seven News ReporterLeslie Brinkley has more on how the war in israel is hitting home in the bay area. Israel is a small country. Everyone knows someone. One rabbi berkowitz is knitting together support in the contra costa Jewish Community in the face of what he called horrific attacks. Yes, im getting news that that people that i know persons we know are no longer with us. They were brutally murdered, brutally slaughtered, and the news just keep coming. This is denying 11 of the israelis. This is the nine over 11 of the israelis. I was raised and grew up in ashkelon. The city that right now is under tremendous attack of missiles. And my parents right now and my mother in law are in the shelters. We are not there. We are here. And we hear all the sadness and all the scary news from our friend and family. Sienna was supposed to fly to israel with her daughters yesterday, but she says her airlines canceled their flight from sfo to tel aviv and she knows people are stranded there as well. Local people are concerned. People are very worried about about security. See, this is locally this isnt in israel. People feel like there is a anti semitic undertone. Of course, were in touch with with law enforcement. Were in touch with Security Companies and so on and so forth for the coming, you know, couple of weeks in the past, i used to say im proud. Im israeli now, im kind of scared to say fundraise users are underway. Support networks are growing exponentially as vigils and rallies get planned. A walk of support for israel is set for tomorrow evening, 5 00, starting here at the walnut creek library. That march will continue down broadway and main street. Organizers are asking people to wear white and carry israeli or american flags in a show of support against terrorism in walnut creek, im leslie brinkly, abc seven news. And we heard from Benjamin Bloom law professor and associate dean for Global Programs at uc law San Francisco, formerly hastings. He spoke to me on our 3 00 show getting answers to give some valuable background on the situation we see now. There was obviously a huge failure on the part of the Israeli Intelligence of not detecting this in advance. My reading of this is that a lot of these attacks and a lot of the hostage taking is purely opportunistic. A Music Festival was was there people were vulnerable and susceptible to being kidnaped. And so thats what thats who they kidnaped. Same with children, elderly or killed or kidnaped simply because because they were there. Bloom says. The difference here is citizens, not soldiers, have been taken hostage. He says targeting citizens has not really happened since the 1960s and 70s, when the plo took Airline Passengers and students hostage. The Israeli Community at uc San Francisco held a vigil this afternoon on campus in mission bay. People came together to mourn and to honor the victims of the hamas attacks. They joined to sing prayers, put up photos and images of those lost and condemn the ongoing violence in the country. The major three us airlines have canceled flights into tel Avivs Ben Gurion airport because of the fighting. American delta and united have all stopped their flights to israel. Delta says flights will not resume until november at the earliest. United has put its nonstop from sfo to tel aviv on hiatus until further notice. Now el al, israels national airline, continues to operate nonstop flights between tel aviv and the United States, including lax. Youll want to stay with abc seven news for the latest updates on the conflict in israel. Well have updates on air and on our digital platform. All right. Lets turn now to the weather. We saw a few sprinkles on the windshields around the bay area today. This video was shot earlier this afternoon in San Francisco. You can see from our tower cameras, its still cloudy outside. So is there any more rain coming . I dont know, but i love the taste of fall. Lets check in with meteorologist sandhya patel. Well, i think then youre going to love the weather for not just today, but tomorrow as well. Dan and kristen. Yes, we do have some more showers moving in as we look at live doppler seven right now. Theyre not widespread and very spotty in nature. So lets get you down to street level radar on the peninsula around foster city. As you will notice, shearwater, parkway bridge parkway into redwood shores, there is some wet weather heading into the inland east bay from walnut creek, 682 pleasant hill, even around blackhawk, you will notice that camino tassajara, some wet weather out there. So you will need your windshield wipers from time to time. Its a light level one system. It is coming through right now. Theres another system right behind it that will come through tomorrow. And so well keep those showers in the forecast. Very spotty in nature for this evening as we head towards tomorrow afternoon. That next round is moving in. Ill let you know how much you can expect coming right up in just a few minutes with the full forecast. All right, sandhya, thank you. All right. Governor newsom just signed several bills into law, but its the ones he vetoed that may have people talking. Governor newsom vetoed a large number of bills over the weekend among the items vetoed a bill that would have made condoms available for state public high schools. A bill that would decriminalize certain Psychedelic Drugs and a bill that would have allowed for amsterdam style cannabis cafes. Abc7 news insider phil matier says it could be part of newsoms long term political plans if he wants to run for president. You know, its tough to go down the middle in california because the world swerves so much. What we see here is pretty much down the middle. Somebody in ohio is going to say how far to the left can you get . The governor has not formally announced any plans to run for president in 2016. Governor newsom was a strong supporter of the proposition that legalized Recreational Cannabis use. Now he stopped the advanced usage of cannabis in the state. Mahathir says it is about his image outside of california. When gavin newsom does Something Like this, you look at what the impact is on the state , but also what the states image is and his images in terms of the United States as a whole. Lets not be sht the fact that theres a president election around the bend in a statement abt e Psychedelic Drug bill, newsom said california should immediately begin rko set up regular treatment guidelines, replete with dosing information. Unfortunately, this bill wod decriminalize possession prior to these guidelines going into place, and i cannot sign it in regard to the bill on condoms in high schools, the governor says the state doesnt have the funds, as other political experts say. Newsom has to be balanced in a state that leans very democratic. Hes he really has to be consistent and that means saying, no, Governor Newsom did sign bills dedicated to workers in Certain Industries and fighting climate change. Popular topics among californians and democrat s across the nation. Political analysts say newsom needs to keep up the balancing act if he does want to run for president as long as he can say you dont want to vote for this other guy or this other party because im closer to what you want than they are. Ryan curry, abc seven news. And Governor Newsom has signed off on a plan to make over to San Francisco peers. Senate bill 273 will revitalize piers 30 and 32 state senator scott wieners legislation calls for repairs and mixed use development at the piers. Some of the amenities will include pedestrian promenades, a floating Swimming Pool and a market hall. The Golden State Warriors have agreed to pay for some of the cost. California is now the first state in the nation to codify president bidens federal nutrition guidelines, which reduced the amount of salt and sugar added to school meals. The governor also signed the california food safety act. Thats the first law in the country to ban for harmful chemicals from candy cereal, soda and other processed food. Abc7 News Reporter loose pena spoke with the vendor who is thankful for all the Community Support that hes been getting. Shes in the newsroom. Louis thats right down the street. Vendors name is juan carlos ramirez. I met with him outside of his home in san jose. He said the cart that was pushed over and confiscated by a San Francisco city worker was his only means to provide for his family. Despite that incident, he says hes grateful for all the Community Support its been a week since a San Francisco public works employee was caught on video pushing a Street Vendors cart. Today, that Street Vendor is speaking for the first time on. I was embarrassed. It was humiliating. I started thinking i just got here after the incident. Juan carlos describes feeling confused with many people passing by asking if he was okay. He says he doesnt even remember seeing the public works employee running towards him. And im pulling my cart and i feel like somebody pushed it. Yeah, i turned around and all my food was on the ground. This video went viral after a group of Community Organizers demanded for the city to intervene. Over the weekend, those same organizers surprised juan carlos with hundreds of people from across the bay area who wanted to meet him and buy hotdogs from him and his family. The video, it was awful. So we decided to plan a buy out for him because pretty much when he pushed his cart, its like he pushed everything he had because thats how he pays the bills. Um, thats how he puts food on the table for his kids. Thats how he pays rent in a matter of hours. Juan carlos sold 250 hot dogs in a parking lot in alameda. Didnt imagine that i had so much support. There was a long line in this video. Hes thanking everyone for supporting his family online. Many have donated over 5,000 on a gofundme page. Juan carlos, when he was there, especially him, he didnt expect that big turnout. He was just super happy. He couldnt believe it. Today in a joint statement with the city, the Department Said in part, when city staff and for street vending rules, issuing permits upholding health codes and keeping the right of way accessible and safe, were doing this work on behalf of the public to maintain a healthy and safe environment for all. Juan carlos is hoping for other vendors to also get help, saying many have been mistreated by city workers because october would like to see justice because of what he did. Juan carlos says hes hoping to get a permit soon and start a food business. The Public Works Department said their inspections were mandated by the health department. They cited months of outreach in english, spanish and chinese leading up to the start of this enforcement. As to the city worker in that video, the San FranciscoPublic Works Department said they are still investigating in the newsroom. Luis pena, abc seven news. All right, luis, thank you. These things are helpful to restore and heal our community and to heal the generational trauma that weve endured. But it also serves to show that theres still a lot of work to be done, not only here, but in the bay area as a whole. Part of that work is to highlight that these tribe members are still here and the university is using technology to do that. You know, there was a time when we always had coastal drizzle and we always had overcast in the morning before it burned off. But lately this has been kind of unusual. No, it has. And we had a warm weekend cooled off. Now the chance of a little rain and some drizzle which saturday i was thinking today on my walk, boy, this is great for tamping down the fire danger a little bit. Oh, big time. I mean, dan and kristen, its not a lot, but around this time of year when were talking about fire danger, any moisture we can get to kind of take down the opportunity for any fires developing, well take. All right. Lets show you live doppler seven. Its a little quieter than it was earlier this morning. We certainly had some showers. But let me get you in street level radar where we are seeing some spotty returns right around black hawk. Tassajara. As you will notice, street level radar, penny lane, very, very light showers also around ignacio valley road, clayton road, 680 walnut creek. So if i were you, i would just hang on to the umbrellas. This is not a widespread rain event. Its very scattered in nature as this front is coming in and you will notice that the rain is tapering in many areas up in Northern California where the fires are burning. Theyve gotten about a half an inch to an inch of rain. So this is welcome indeed. And behind this system, theres another cold front coming in for tomorrow. The biggest change, you probably noticed is the double digit drop in our inland communities compared to 24 hours ago, running 22 degrees cooler in fairfield, 18 degrees cooler in concord. Heres a live view from our san rafael camera. And it is a pretty cloudy sky. 63 right now in San Francisco, 68 in oakland. Its in the low 70s from san jose to palo alto, 63 degrees in half moon bay, sutro tower camera. Its kind of a little bit of a fuzzy view there. 66 in santa rosa, 70 for novato, concord, livermore 71 degrees. Napa. Youre at 68. And from our east bay hills camera just seeing the clouds all stacked up right now. Spotty showers today. Another round tomorrow. Temperatures below average again tomorrow. And we are looking at sunnier and a little warmer for midweek on our exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale. Were calling this a light level one for today and tomorrow. Those scattered showers resulting in some slippery roads, areas of low visibility and certainly breezy out there. All right. Computer models are not picking up a whole lot. Very scattered, very spotty for this evening. It all tapers tomorrow morning. We start out with clouds and fog. Tomorrow afternoon in that next cold front comes in and that will bring another opportunity for rain. Best chance begins in the north bay. And then as we head towards the evening, we start to see the opportunity for those scattered showers elsewhere. But when these fronts start to get down towards the south bay, theres not a whole lot left to it. So rainfall totals may range anywhere from nothing measurable to about 13 hundredths of an inch in ukiah. So far, weve seen about a quarter of an inch in the north bay where its wet. Orinda has picked up three hundredths trace amounts. Napa airport, concord airport tomorrow morning, fog 50s for most of you. A few upper 40s and a few low 60s. As we head towards tomorrow afternoon. It is still going to be cooler than average and well see the showers first developing in the north bay. Cloudier skies elsewhere low 60 to the mid 70s. Accuweather 70 forecast level one for tomorrow. Showers in the afternoon evening fog to sun on wednesday certainly will be breezy and then well brighten it up and go with a warmer day for thursday 80s inland 60s coast late night chance friday cant be ruled out. Its a slight chance right now with the lingering chance on saturday. So kristen and dan really changing things up. Yeah. All right. Thank you, cynthia. Thats where, as you can see, there is a large Police Presence after an incident there. Abc seven News Reporter jared stone is there for us live. J. R, what have you been able to find out . Well, kristin, we are awaiting police to see what they will say and what actually went down in this scenario. But what you can see directly behind me right here is an area of geary boulevard that is roped off with yellow crime scene tape. One of our photographers arrived here shortly after this happened and he was able to see a vehicle that had gone inside the chinese consulate. He was also able to see a person being taken out on a stretcher and taken away into an ambulance. That person was bloody. And now police have not said what went down. Our photographer who first arrived on the scene also said that a number of people came out of this chinese consulate and were wiping their eyes as if they had there had been pepper spray or something of that nature inside. And now as to what that person was doing inside as to what they found inside the car, we are still waiting to hear. We have been told that an officer will speak with us shortly, but this section of geary boulevard is closed off right now. So when we get new information in this case, we certainly will bring it to you here on abc seven news. Now back to you two in the studio. Okay. Thanks, chair, very much. Weve all seen and heard the stories of San Franciscos doom loop, but what will the images of closed stores and drug deals mean for an upcoming global conference with city leaders are hoping to showcase and a warning from a nearby county. Plus, thats a world record third world record. So how much did the new world record pumpkin weigh . Well have the update a little later on this hour. Stay with San Francisco faces one of the Biggest Challenges in decades to enhance the image of the city as a major world conference comes to town. Yeah, next month, the world will be focused on San Francisco during the Asia Pacific Economic cooperation summit. Abc7 News Reporter leanne melendez joins us live now to talk about the warning from San Mateo County. Actually to San Francisco before aipac. But let me say that the un charter was signed here in San Francisco in 1945. Right. And that was a big moment for San Francisco. And some say this is even bigger. Yeah yeah. So the event is so big that the secret service will head up security. Now, San Francisco is focusing on two things for finding Economic Opportunities and improving its image, because unlike in vegas, what happens in San Francisco during apec will not stay in San Francisco. While there are many iconic landmarks, San Franciscos tarnished image around the world is best described as a beauty in distress. This journalist based in San Francisco who worked for foreign media, have much to write about, especially since it changed a lot. Its not the hippie city anymore than the tech bros came in and a lot of money came really. A lot of money came in in San Francisco has changed dramatically. Axel posted. It works for a german business newspaper interested in how San Francisco grapples with its commercial real estate downturn. The question is, will we see anything like this in germany . True or in other cities . Thats an issue to be discussed in mid november during the Asia Pacific Economic cooperation summit hosted by San Francisco. Heres the apec lineup. 21 World Leaders 30,000 delegates, 1200 ceos from around the world. Not only is the citys image at stake, but some say it is the beginning of its economic recovery. San francisco has the potential to lure much needed foreign businesses to its downtown, where one third of the commercial space is vacant. The opportunity to have International Folks here, folks from china, korea, right, from japan, people who are not, you know, who are only hearing the stories and not seeing the reality of investment, to see the opportunities to invest in here and the path forward, we think is a real strong point where were going to showcase our cutting edge thinking on Artificial Intelligence and on biotech and Everything Else thats out there. Autonomous vehicles. Were going to be a big showcase on all of that. Like everybody that comes to visit, we think theyll get excited about it and might want to come and expand and be part of what weve got here that can really help our economy. San francisco has just one month left to prepare for. So far, the city has raised 20 million to make it an extravagant event, but also make it clean and safe right before his big dream force convention. Admittedly salesforce Ceo Marc Benioff became the squeaky wheel , suggesting he might leave if San Francisco didnt clean up. It worked. Everything is perfect. Spiffy cleaned up nice. I mean, i went, no, its like i went down howard street. Im like, what did they do, pour fresh cement . I mean, its like everything is like people you can eat off the sidewalk. Its incredible. Well, at least it lasted a few days during dreamforce. Howard street is no longer gleaming, and some of the people hanging out on nearby streets have resumed their activity. Citys mayor london breed seemed undaunted. Whats interesting is we had about 250 delegates from around the world who are like the advance team for apec. And we took them to the tenderloin. We took them to neighborhoods and around the city. And what they said is this happens where were from, too. This is not we dont see what everyone is talking about, about when as a major city, San Francisco, just like any other major city, it has its challenges. Postnet disagrees. He says the International Media will be reporting on everything they see and counter and experience. Keep them out of the tenderloin. If they come here, if they see this, this is definitely absolutely outrageous. If you come here and if youre not prepared for that , you really think this is San Francisco . Oh, my god. So we are going to continue to chip at it. Were going to continue to work very hard to get people off the streets. Weve taken the very bold, controversial steps of making arrests for not just dealers, but also users. Meanwhile, neighboring counties are watching, too. San francisco. So obviously theyre going to have great motivation to try and spruce up the city, which may see drug dealers quietly moving across county lines. San mateo County District attorney Steve Wagstaffe warns of what may follow. If we see it. You arrest them and we will prosecute them and we will lock them up. Were really concerned. We do not want San Mateo County in any fashion to turn into what San Francisco has become. And it wont because were not going to let it happen. The apec conference is also a chance for San Francisco to take center stage when the leaders of the two largest economies, the us and china, sit down to meet in good faith. The meeting goes beyond trade talks. It is also an opportunity to convince more Chinese Tourists to travel here. Despite what they have seen or heard. Chinese tourists spent 1. 2 billion in San Francisco in 2019, but have not returned in pre pandemic numbers. You never get a Second Chance to make a first impression. Now, there are two reasons why chinese tourism has not returned to normal. One, direct flights were not available until just last month. They are slowly coming back and number two, the valid concern about antiasian hate crimes. And, you know, thats going to be something thats going to be discussed at apec and the delegates are going to say, what are you doing San Francisco . What are you doing about it . Right . Not to mention the hostilities and the tensions between the two countries right now. So but we need those tourism dollars. We do. Thanks thanks. Repaving project. All right. I didnt get to play in the fourth quarter. You know, i really like to be out there, not just sitting around watching, but youre up 42 to 10. Were not going to risk putting you out there. Happy for them, too. Thats when a Winning Ticket for the 1 billion Powerball Jackpot prize was sold at a downtown l. A. Market. And that winner has yet to come forward. The lottery. These last 12 months breaking records as the next grand prize winner would become the fifth lottery billionaire in the past 12 months. But the largest Lottery Jackpot to date was the powerball drawing last november sold in altadena, calif for a whopping 2 billion. And one of the guys that i was talking with, i said, you realize that there are some adults who will never have this view and you get it every single day of your life. And the guy looks at me and he says, sounds like a lot of adults chose poorly. I it took every ounce of restraint not to strangle him. But he makes a good point. Hes right. But it is interesting, sandhya, you know, obviously the social aspect of college is important. Its a chance for first time kids have been away from home for, you know, for extended periods of time. We go for an education. We send kids for an education. But the social aspect is important. Its so important, dan, i mean, especially when you are away from your family, thats like your second family, your friends. And i think there has to be a balance. It cant be all study and no fun, right, right, right. You guys heard the campaign recently. Stanford hates fun. Thats another one to dive into.
