Isnt this a pretty picture of the fog floating into San Francisco there so cloudy skies to start out around the bay. The sun coming up at 711 and then by noontime 70s and 80s, mostly sunny conditions around the bay inland and looking at those upper 80s for our warmest inland valleys. So a big cool down today. Thats according to the Washington Post this morning and comes as Officials Say the attacks near the gaza border have killed at least 500 israelis, more than 230 palestinians have been killed in retaliatory attacks. Thousands more on both sides are injured. This all began with a surprise attack by hamas military force. They fired thousands of rockets from gaza into israel saturday. Hamas claims it has captured dozens of israelis, including soldiers. A state of alert for war has been declared by the Israeli Defense forces and the attack is drawing worldwide condemnation. President joe biden reaffirming us support for israel yesterday from the white house. The United States stands with the people of israel in the face of these terrorist assaults. Israel has the right to defend itself and its people. This is not a moment for any party hostile to israel to exploit these attacks, to seek advantage. The world is watching. White house Officials Say its too early to know if iran had any involvement with the attacks in israel. The fbi and the department of Homeland Security have issued a Public Safety notification to Law Enforcement across the us, urging them to stay vigilant during the ongoing situation. And back in the bay area, were getting local response to the conflict as well as a better understanding of whats behind it. Abc7 News Reporter Tara Campbell spoke to a variety of experts on the conflict in the middle east at the site and sounds of chaos in the middle east. A palestinian attack and israeli response. Yes, i think this is one of the most significant moments of palestine indian resistance that we have ever seen. George bisharat is an emeritus professor at uc law San Francisco and an expert on the middle east. Certainly the most significant military act of resistance ever against israel by the palestinians. And he says the palestinian attack has likely been long in the making for hamas to be able to pull this off in a surprise way like this is an incredible feat. Now, you know, whatever you make of it, its as a as a matter of a military operation, pretty incredible. As a jew and i know i speak for my jewish colleagues in the legislature, we are all both horrified and terrified about whats happening in israel. State senator scott wiener is a member of the california legislative jewish caucus. Israel is not perfect by any stretch. I have my own very public criticisms, but what happened today crosses a red line. Nothing justifies the terrorist attacks that we saw today. This is a horrific day. The violence that were seeing today is disturbing to everyone who cares about peace and justice. Edward ackman. Mitchell leads the council on American Islamic relations until the occupation ends here, were going to keep seeing this cycle of violence repeated self for years and years to come. And as for what comes next, the professor says it could go several ways as the fact of the number of hostages provides the palestinians with a significant leverage against the israeli state power and may cause a quicker end to this than and less violent end to this than we might otherwise see. Or he says israel could respond as it has in the past. Another scenario is that israel will mass go ahead and do as it has done in the past. And possibly even worse. And that was Tara Campbell reporting. Now to afghanistan, where the death toll is rising following a series of powerful earthquakes there. The taliban says more than 2000 people have died. The strongest of the quakes was a 6. 3 magnitude quake. It struck about 25 miles from the western city of herat. Many buildings were damaged, trapping people in the rubble. And there were at least three powerful aftershocks. Officials in maui are urging the governor of hawaii to delay the reopening of the western side of the island to tourist. Its plan to reopen in phases starting today. Of course, wildfires devastated the town of lahaina back in august. And yesterday, maui county officials voted unanimously, unanimously on a resolution to postpone the reopening, claiming residents need more time to heal and rebuild. And the maui wildfires claim 97 lives left more than 30 people missing, making the fires the deadliest in us history. Back here at home, we saw another dazzling aerial display from the blue angels as the stars of fleet week soared over San Francisco this weekend. Todays the last day you can check them out. Saturday was a perfect fog free day for flying, but as you may know, it was hot. Abc seven News Reporter cornell bernard has a look at how people kept cool while enjoying the spectacular show. All eyes in the sky. Nobody on the marina green missing a second of the navys blue angels doing what they do best over San Francisco bay. Spectators know youve got to see it to believe it. Sun screen umbrellas and a lot of pop up tents to Manny Guerrero from sunnyvale had a cool idea. Well, we brought a lot of cool drinks. We brought our tent and were just going to try to ration ourselves and not, i guess, run or walk too much. Others using fans to cool off, but there were few complaints when this was the payoff. Well, a neighborhood assistant city was evacuated saturday as a wildfire threatedheir homes and the cause is still unknown. But homeowrsay the flames near wiley le came dangerously close to their houses. Abc seven News Reporter unser hassan has their story. Late late saturday evening, fire crews continued to monitor the aftermath of a wildfire that burned more than 30 acres in suisun city, threatening nearby homes and businesses. How close was the fire to your facility . I would have to say literally in our backyard. And it would have came in if the fence wasnt there. Jasmine peete is the sales supervisor at pick and pull an auto dismantling shop which sells car parts. The damage along the entire back fence line shows how the fire was kept out. That likely prevented another problem, says peete. Given the potential toxic material at the facility, we deal with a lot of chemicals, fluids like gas, oil , freon, sometimes we even deal with hazardous waste. We did have a response from cal fire and they did do an air drop for us, which helped contain the blaze as well. Captain maddy scott with sassoon Fire Protection district was the first on scene. He says the fire broke out around 12 noon and quickly spread as the winds began to pick up speed. Despite the wet winter, the grass is dry, which is always a concern for this time of year, says captain maddy, especially here in Solano County. This is still fire season. Yeah, october. Even into november, we always get a warm spell for this time of year in october. So this is can be expected in this part of the state. The fire also prompted an Evacuation Order for the nearby neighborhood. All of a sudden we just see a bunch of smoke blow into our backyard and got dark. There was ash just immediately blown into our faces and it was orange and super scary. The macy family was evacuated for four hours. When they got home, they found parts of their backyard damaged by the fire burnt fence and plants, ashes everywhere, but no reports of injuries. And the family is just thankful to be safe. Yeah, im so happy we see. So happy to see my all neighbors are good. Theyre all safe. The cause of the fire is still unknown in Solano County and san hassan. Abc seven news. Such a close call for them. And as the threat of wildfires increases, were learning that what your house is made of and small changes to your property can have a big impact on how vulnerable you and your home are. Abcs matt gutman has more on the latest fire safety research. Were at a one of a kind Test Facility where researchers study the science of wildfires. Something ive spent much of my career covering for abc news in california. Wow. The intensity of that is absolutely enormous. The heat is overwhelming. Its almost nothing they could do with that wind. This is a firestorm. Were going to the other side of the car here at the Insurance Institute for business and home safety or ebay, is that powerful wind is simulated by this towering wall of more than 100 industrial strength fans is blasting those red hot embers toward structures. And this helps scientists learn what kinds of Building Materials will burn and what can withstand the hot fury of mother nature. Experts say its those scorching embers, though tiny, that can turn small fires into town, destroying events. It was those wind driven embers in maui in august that experts say helped the historic and deadly inferno to spread so fast, killing at least 97 people and engulfing more than 2000 structures. Most of them homes. But not this one featured in the Honolulu Civil Beat virtually unscathed. Some called it a miracle, but researchers at ibhs point to two factors that likely saved the structure. A commercial grade steel roof and riverside stones surrounding the home. The homeowners telling the civil beat they replace their traditional landscaping with the stones not to protect their home from fire, but from water and termite damage. Little do they know that one of the key tactics that teaches is creating a minimum of a five foot fire resistant buffer zone around your home using hardscape and noncombustible fencing. Think of it like your moat. You are keeping wildfire and embers away from your structure. This time lapse video shows a fire ignited along a fence between two structures. Watch as the fire never reaches the home on the right because it cant pass through that metal fence. The wooden fence on the left, however, acts like a wick of a candle, bringing the fire directly to the house and now theyve built a home just for us. You can see there are two distinct sides here. One has this wooden mulch outside. Do you see a wooden deck . Wooden siding. The other side is a wildfire prepared home. These are fire resistant siding. As you can see, the metal in the deck, that fence, the part that actually touches the house that is also made out of metal. And you can see theres hardscaping all around. So under the supervision of the richburg fire department, we fired up those ember generators and they allow me to step right in their path. And in just minutes, as these embers are coming in fast and just now, this is the start of a fire right underneath this bush here, right next to the deck. This could be the thing that ignites this whole house here, this deck, the one made out of steel or nothing. And this deck right now is catching fire. That thing is going to blow up this deck is now completely engulfed in flames. Its going to take this out in less than two minutes later. It did exactly that. All the while, the right side remained seemingly untouched. This house is virtually gone. You can hear it. You can feel the heat from those flames right now. It is absolutely massive. And you can see how quickly that wooden side of this house was engulfed in flames. Its in the eaves right now, which also means its going through those vents. Those vents were covered in steel protective mesh, but they were the wrong size. The hole is so big they let the embers through. The rule of thumb here is that you dont want mesh that can have a nail or a golf tee. Go through it. You want it to be a bit finer than that, something that can block this stuff that way the embers cant get through that mesh and into your home. Right now, the firefighters are about to come in and douse this thing because its gotten too hot. That was matt gutman reporting and meteorologist lisa arjun is tracking the forecast. That research, lisa, so timely right now, especially in october. We know how critical this can be for wildfire season. Thankfully, though, weve been relatively fortunate. We have. We havent had the offshore winds this time around that usually go with that extreme heat. But, you know, october is not over yet. So there is certainly a chance were going to see the heat come back. But as for today, big time cooling. Yesterday, we set a record of 92 in oakland. How about 70 . 13 degrees cooler today with mid 70s. The dense fog advisory is with us along the peninsula. The Golden Gate Bridge down through monterey and santa cruz. And theres a cold front on the way. So certainly doing a 180 for the first half of the upcoming workweek, 54. And you cant see anything at all down around Half Moon Bay, our dense fog advisory through 10 00. It is 62 in oakland, 53 in santa rosa. And that 50 cool for you in novato with about 60 in livermore. So heres a look outside just a little bit of fog trying to enter the bay. Were going to see another Sunny Afternoon despite our cooldown still 5 to 10 degrees above average inland taking us to around 90. But boy, thats a big improvement from yesterdays 100 degrees around travis. And as we get to your monday, could see some showers dotting the landscape. Heres a look at the next 24 hours as we look at all the fog this morning. And then we break out into mostly sunny conditions. The fog is at the coast and it will be breezy and much cooler today for the blue angels. But well see sunny skies around the bay. That fog wants to creep in late in the afternoon. And as we get towards your overnight hours into monday, a cold Front Holding together very early monday, bringing rain to sonoma and napa, stopping this at 10 00. So you can see how well have the showers north of the golden gate. But if you could slip to the south and east. But as we go through the next few hours into the afternoon, this certainly falls apart. So rainfall amounts will favor the coastal hills, the west sloping hills from the peninsula up to the north bay with a couple hundredths. Thats about it. And we may not see anything at all. Usually we dont in the santa clara valley, but maybe 1 100. Ben lomond that will make it that far south. Temperatures way down below average. We should see upper 70s to near 80, but as for your monday with that cold front, the rain around the wind shift, the winds out of the south just 60s and 70s. By tuesday breaking out into a little bit more sun. But theres another system to the north of us that will keep us cool and then into wednesday, temperatures will climb a few more degrees. But overall, kind of uneventful. The temperatures way down this week. As for today, still a lot of sunshine on the way, partly cloudy, low 60s out there at 10 00 for the blue angels. Then mid 60s throughout the afternoon mostly sunny that sea breeze with us and the fog will be at the coast so itll certainly be as much as 15 to 20 degrees cooler for some locations around the bay and highs today from the low 80s in san rafael, upper 80s in concord. Look for upper 70s along the peninsula to we saw mid 90s in redwood city yesterday. So big break from the heat. The accuweather seven day forecast still warm inland but looking at the big cooldown bringing in our storm impact scale for monday. A weak level one system and maybe a few leftover sprinkles on tuesday, some warmer days towards the end of the week. So i always like to look 16 to 18 days out. Were in this big cooling trend, but it looks like we could see some heat return by mid month. Well, well take the cool down while we can take it. Yeah. Lisa, thank you so much. And just ahead, speaking of climate, how Climate Change could impact Flood Insurance here in the bay area. On everything with just one card. Chase freedom unlimited. So, if youre off the racking. A man and his dog are safe after being rescued from a cliff near fort funston, san today. Officers say the dog got loose and ended up about 100ft down the steep cliff. San francisco fire department, they were called in and had to use ropes and harnesses to hoist them to safety. The rescue prompted this warning from the fire department. If your canine does go off the cliff, call us immediately by calling 911 in the city and county San Francisco and allow our rescue technicians to come and rescue the canine. Were fortunate that this incident resulted in no injuries, but it could have had a worse outcome. And thankfully, it did not. Last year, crews carried out around 100 rescues at fort funston alone. Baxter says number of those itances, a person trying to save a dog ended up needing saving because the dog was able to make it back up themselves. As with Governor Newsom stepping in to stabilize californias shaky Home Insurance market last week, new data is pointing to another risk that homeowners may not fully appreciate. Abc7 news weather anchor Spencer Kristen has the details. You could say Leanne Mcginley has San Francisco bay for a next door neighbor, a newly complete section of seawall sits just a few hundred feet away from her front door in foster city and the multimillion dollar upgrade means leanne and her neighbors will not be required to purchase Flood Insurance, which can run hundreds of dollars or more. I am retired and of course thats a fixed income right now. I would probably be all right tapping into savings, but no one wants to do that. But balancing the cost of flood protection and Flood Insurance can be an increasingly expensive challenge for communities around the bay area. Climate change is predicted to drive increasing Sea Level Rise and ultra wet storm cycles known as atmospheric rivers, leaving thousands of families woefully unprepared. And abc7 News Data Team analysis found more than 300,000 homes and businesses around the rim of San Francisco bay have an 80 chance of flooding over the next 30 years and still nearly 90 of homeowners may not have Flood Insurance. More people are going to need it. More people need it now. We know that, you know, last winter when california saw those deluges and a lot of people had losses and damage, there was a lot of eye opening. Wow. I didnt realize that i could flood. Amy bach directs the consumer nonprofit united policyholders. She says the numbers reflect a growing strain on the states insurance system from natural disasters, including floods, wildfires and earthquakes. With the current patchwork of public and private coverage struggling to spread the risk. The way things are going, we are going to have to have some kind of a federal disaster insurance program, just like we created the Affordable Care act and we said these are the essential benefits that an insurer must provide and insure cannot reject somebody who has a preexisting condition. I think were going to have to get there with property. Last month, governor gavin newsom signed an executive order designed to stabilize the states property insurance market, potentially allowing insurers to factor the future risk from Climate Change into their rates. While the complicated market continues to shake itself out. Leanne mcginley is grateful for a bit of breathing room from the new seawall, at least where Flood Insurance is concerned. And i was originally for the project and even more so now. I think the future is very important not only for me and my family but for other generations. And this is important for that protection. And that was abc7 weather anchor Spencer Kristen reporting. You can also go to abc7 news. Com to check your neighborhood flood risk in the decades moving forward. Well also have links to interactive maps showing other climate threats as well including wildfires. Its the first time in 50 years israel has been surprised by attack. Congressional leaders and President Biden both condemned the attack. Mr. Biden spoke by phone saturday with netanyahu and addressed the nation, offering full us support. It. Israel has the right to defend itself and its people full stop. Thats allowing for fog dense fog to enter the bay area. So we have a dense fog advisory until 10 00 from the peninsula. So that includes the Golden Gate Bridge and then down through Half Moon Bay, santa cruz, watsonville, visibility less than a quarter of a mile right now at Half Moon Bay, 61, san leandro, it is 57 in el sobrante with upper 50s, San Francisco, 50in novato 53 with the fog in pacifica. So we are 2 to 8 degrees cooler this morning in the fog around the bay throughout the 9 00 hour. 50s and 60s much cooler. But as we go into the midmorning hours the afternoon mostly sunny skies with mid 70s over in oakland, upper 60s downtown we will see about near 80 or near 90 inland, but thats still a good 7 to 17 degrees cooler than yesterday and therell be fog at the coast for the blue angels today. Zach. Lisa, thank you. The september jobs report soared to numbers analysts didnt expect the Labor Department says the economy created 336,000 new jobs in september. Michael finney tells us how the state department is always busy issuing passport reports, but now it is busier than ever before. We had the most passports issued this last fiscal year that weve ever seen in our history. 24 million passport books and cards were issued this last fiscal year. And a lot of it really did have to do with demand. A lot more people were applying for their passports this year and traveling. That caused the system to bog down. I heard from a Record Number of travelers over the past couple of years needing help from travelers like the east bays david yandell. He and his wife each paid an extra 60 for an expedited service. We didnt want to miss this occasion. It was very important to us and to our family, and it worked fine for rosie. But it didnt work at all for me. Now, the state department is getting on top of the workload and getting a passport is happening much more quickly. As of october 2nd, we were able to reduce our passport processing times by two weeks. So now for routine service, you could expect it to take 8 to 11 weeks and for expedited service , you could expect that to take 5 to 7 weeks. So that is time enough for many to get a passport in time for holiday travel. If they get moving. And by january, process guessing times should be at pre pandemic levels by the end of the year, we can get back to times like we had in 2019, which was 6 to 8 weeks for routine and 2 to 3 weeks for expedited service. And that was seven on your sides Michael Finney reporting , saying if your application seems stuck in limbo, you can go to the state departments online passport tracker and look up the status. Weve posted Contact Information on our website, abc seven news. Com. All right. We got a lot more ahead. Lets check in with lisa. All right. We are looking at a gorgeous day today. Much cooler. I offer what i can when i can. I started noticing my memory was slipping. I saw a prevagen commercial and i did some research on it. I started taking prevagen about three years ago. I feel clearer in my thoughts, my memory has improved and generally just more on point. Prevagen. At stores everywhere without a prescription. Fleet week. Welcome come back again next year, please. All right. In sports, the warriors return to chase center this weekend. And we got a look at the latest addition to the team. Chris paul. Abc seven sports anchor casey pratt has a look at pauls debut for the dubs in your morning sports. Good morning. We got our first look at chris paul in game action. But before the game he hit this trick shot from behind the baseline. Now a warriors assistant bet him hed miss big mistake he had to pay with push ups and cp3. He made him pay up right away. Cp three and the warriors hosting the lakers in the preseason opener. Paul is first shot as a warrior. Its got to be mid range, right . The 11 foot jumper coming up here and he drains it. Paul finished with six points. Then after kevon looney gets the rebound, of course, paul looking up the floor, finds steph who else . And splash. He drains his first three of the pre season right there. A little later theyre going to hook up again and i think im going to like this. Good tandem paul with five assists in just 13 minutes of play. Funniest moment of the game. The warriors swinging it around. Jonathan kuminga finds the open man its steph but hes not in the game. Hes standing on the sideline. Oops, you got to get curry the ball at all costs. Six sep. Maybe when hes on the bench big laughs all around and at the timeout out curry says good eyes but thats my bad. The warriors win their preseason opener 125 108 warriors head coach steve kerr on cp cp3 performance theres a pace to the game that that is fun to watch as a coach where you just kind of know how hes going to just be making the right play over and over and he understand aids you know when we need to pull it back and get into an action or, you know, play faster because he understands the rhythm of the game. So chris is amazing. Hes really fun to have him on our side. Finally san jose state at boise state in the elvire in the building. I bet you they have blue suede shoes on the broncos turn it over twice in the first quarter. San jose state took advantage tough running by kevin cordero. Get off me. He will not be denied 11 yards for the score. Its going to be 14 nothing spartans after yet another boise state turnover qualley conley caps an 84 yard drive from six yards out. It was 27 seven spartans at one point, but boise state scored 28 unanswered points. Taylin green gave them the lead with the 11 yard touchdown run. Final minute. San jose state down eight. Still had a chance. Fourth down cordero looking long, scrambling. He gets tripped up and the spartans fall to one and five after they lose 3527. Theyve had double digit leads in the second half in both of their last two games, and they lost at cal hosting number 15, oregon state, the bears staying in this one into the second half and is very first start at quarterback Fernando Mendoza threw two touchdowns including this 30 yarder to jack andres cal down just three after making the two point conversion open but the beavs break it open after that throwing a touchdown pass to defensive lineman Isaac Hodgins to make it 4932. The bears trying to stay in it, but mendoza is picked off by dermod mccoy and the beavs break out the turnover. Chainsaw bears lose 52 to 40. Theyre three and three on the season. Have a great sunday, everybody. Im casey pratt. Thanks to casey. Take a look at this. Firefighters in sacramento rescued a kitten from underneath a car. That car drove to the station for help and once the firefighters caught the kitten, it ran back into the car and had to be rescued a second time. Poor little guy. The story does have a happy ending, though. That kitten was finally caught and now has a new home. So alls well that ends well, right . Glad hes okay. All right. Well, getting a check now at the bay area forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. Hi there, zach. Good morning to you. Hi, everyone. Looking at a cold front that will be moving in for your monday but out ahead of it, some very dense fog. Our big ridge of High Pressure that heat dome shifting to the east and allowing for about a 1000 foot marine layer to form right along the shoreline, allowing for a dense fog advisory, hugging the san mateo coast. You can see how it is scattered out there from mount tan. Beautiful view. 711 is the sunrise is 57 right now. San francisco, 60 in oakland, 63. In mountain view, it is 66. In san jose with the fog from 54 pacifica Half Moon Bay very dense there. And look at this cool shot here from our exploratorium camera 53. Santa rosa down to 48in novato. It is 60 in napa. Midfifties and calm winds at the surface. Upper elevation still in the 70s. So still warm above about 2000ft. And were looking at just a Little Finger of fog there entering San Francisco. So our dense fog advisory from the peninsula south through 10 00 cooler today. Were going from that record of 92 in oakland to about 75 today. So thats about a 17 degree drop around the bay shore still above average. Inland so our marine air wont be uniform, only distributed across the bay area, but you will get some cooling inland chance of showers on monday with a cold front that kind of limps through the north bay. Heres a look at the fog deck where it gets reestablished throughout the afternoon soon. So as we clear back and get mostly sunny skies throughout the day, by three, 4 00, it is right there at the coast hugging San Francisco. So youll see it there for the blue angels. And as we get into your monday, its cloudy. Weve got a cold front on the way throughout the morning hours. And you can see at 10 00, still spreading some rain, starting to spread rain from sonoma to napa into marin. A few showers slipping perhaps to the south and to the east bay. The west sloping west sloping facing areas of marin and san mateo, picking up a couple hundredths, maybe a 10th to 2 10. But as we get into the afternoon, it pretty much falls apart and well be on the back side of it. But another system passing to the north into your tuesday keeping us cool, breezy and gray throughout much of the beginning of the workweek. So about a 10th to a couple hundredths as we get into late monday. And then another cool day for your tuesday wednesday. Still below average. We are looking at upper 80s, near average today or above average today. Low 80s is the actual average temperature, but well look for the temperatures to drop off throughout the first half of the week and then warm up a little bit by the end of the week. So sunny skies on the way. Temperatures about 15 to 20 degrees cooler around San Francisco today. Well have fog at the coast by three, 4 00, making for a typical San Francisco fleet week for the second half of the weekend. It was a little atypical with the heat, but we kind of expect that thing for october for the warm up. As for today, 80 in fremont thats a little warm but boy, big improvement if youre not a fan of the heat 75 in oakland 83 for you in napa with a 90 in morgan hill. The accuweather seven day forecast so 60 coast upper 70s to 80 around the bay shore low 90s inland and then our level one system a weak one spreading a few raindrops. Monday tuesday a lingering chance of showers. By wednesday were behind the system but still cool and then maybe some comfortable readings thursday and friday. Its almost impossible to think of those temperatures and rain after the last couple of days that weve had. I know the swings are incredible. Its such a difference. Thats the bay area weather for.
