Defense forces have declared a state of alert for war following a surprise attack carried out by Palestinian Militants. The idf says at least 2200 rockets were fired towards israel, though hamas claimed at least 5000 rockets were fired, all landing in southern and central israel. Emily schrader says shes an israeli american and captured this video of the aftermath. So this is very close to where i live in tel aviv. You can see here where there was a direct hit. Images on social media show heavily armed Palestinian Militants on motorbikes and pickup trucks crossing into israeli settlements. This video appears to show militants taking hostages in israel near the border with gaza. Another video also appears to show a woman being taken hostage in gaza. Israeli forces launching massive retaliatory airstrikes. This building collapsing, flames then lighting up the night sky in gaza as those israeli strikes continued. Israelis prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu says Israeli Defense forces will immediately use all of its strength to destroy the capabilities of hamas. President biden spoke with netanyahu and has reaffirmed us support for israel in this moment of tragedy. I want to say to them and to the world and to terrorists everywhere that the United States stands with israel. Well make sure that they have the help their citizens need and they can continue to defend themselves. The state Department Says secretary of state Antony Blinken spoke with Palestinian Authority president mahmoud abbas, urging him to take steps to restore calm and stability in the west bank. The fbi and department of Homeland Security says there is no specific intelligence indicating a threat to the us in relation to israel, but they did issue a notice to Police Across the us, urging them to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Manny ikuto civic leader and owner of mannys restaurant and Gathering Place in San Franciscos Mission district, is in israel. Hes visiting his family in beit shemesh, near jerusalem. We reached out to him there tonight. When i was in synagogue, there were two times where the sirens went off and all the kids had to hide underneath their parents and underneath the tables. Were screaming and crying. And the adults in the room had to sing as loud as we could to kind of drown out the sounds of the sirens and keep the kids from being traumatized. And back in the bay area, were getting local response to the conflict as well as a better understanding of whats behind it. Abcs seven News Reporter Tara Campbell joins us now live from the newsroom. She spoke to a variety of experts tonight on the conflict in the middle east. Tara. Yeah, lauren this evening i spoke with activists and lawmakers on both sides of this , as well as with a local expert who helps break down what could come. The sights and sounds of chaos in the middle east. A palestinian attack and israeli response. I think this is one of the most significant moments of Palestinian Resistance that we have ever seen. George bisharat is an emeritus professor at uc San Francisco and an expert on the middle east. Certainly the most significant military act of resistance ever against israel by the palestinians. And he says the palestinian attack has likely been long in the making for hamas to be able to pull this off in a surprise way like this is an incredible feat. Now, you know, whatever you make of it, its as a as a matter of a military operation, pretty incredible. As a jew and i know i speak for my jewish colleagues in the legislature, we are all both horrified and terrified about whats happening in israel. State senator scott wiener is a member of the california legislative jewish caucus. Israel is not perfect by any stretch. I have my own very public criticisms, but what happened today crosses a red line. Nothing justifies the terrorist attacks that we saw today. This is a horrific day. The violence that were seeing today is disturbing to everyone who cares about peace and justice. Edward ackman. Mitchell leads the council on American Islamic relations until the occupation ends, i fear were going to keep seeing this cycle of violence repeat itself for years and years to come. And as for what comes next, the professor says it could go several ways. Is the fact of the number of hostages provides the palestinians with a significant leverage against the israeli state power and may cause a quicker end to this than and less violent end to this than we might otherwise see. Or he says israel could respond. And as it has in the past. Another scenario is that israel will mass go ahead and do as it has done in the past. And possibly even worse. Now, so far, we know of a couple of events happening here in San Francisco tomorrow in response to these attacks. The Community Gathering is planned at shearith, israel at 11 30 a. M. And then in the afternoon, a showing of support for palestine with a protest planned outside the israeli consulate and that gets underway at 4 00. Lauren all right, tara, thank you. A few homes near wylie lane did have some minor damage. Abc7ew reporter answer hassan spoke to people who saw the flames come dangerously close to their property. Late saturday evening. Fire crews continue to monitor the aftermath of a wildfire that burned more than 30 acres in suisun city, threatening nearby homes and businesses. How close was the fire to your facility . I would have to say literally in our backyard. And it would have came in if the fence wasnt there. Jasmine peete is the sales supervisor at pick and pull an auto dismantling shop which sells car parts. The damage along the entire back fence line shows how the fire was kept out. That likely prevented another problem, says peete. Given the potentially toxic material at the facility. We deal with a lot of chemicals, fluids like gas, oil , freon. Sometimes we even deal with hazardous waste. We did have a response from cal fire and they did do an air drop for us, which helped contain the blaze as well. Captain matty scott with Suisun Fire Protection District was the first on scene. He says the fire broke out around 12 noon and quickly spread as the winds began to pick up speed. Despite the wet winter, the grass is dry, which is always a concern for this time of year, says captain matty. Especially here in Solano County. This is still fire season. Yeah, october, even into november, our we always get a warm spell for this time of year. In october. So this is can be expected in this part of the state. The macy family was evacuated for four hours. When they got home, they found parts of their backyard damaged by the fire burnt fence and plants, ashes everywhere, but no reports of injuries. And the family is just thankful to be safe. Yeah, im so happy. We see so happy to see my all neighbors are good and theyre all safe. Well be lucky tomorrow because its going to be sunny and mild and not quite so warm as the last couple of days. Not quite so hot, i should say. So thats good news. Heres a look at whats happening right now on our satellite radar composite image, big ridge of High Pressure thats been the dominant factor in our weather for the last several days. Its brought us sunny skies. Its also brought us a bit of a heat wave, but the heat is receding just a little bit right now. And that heat advisory we had in effect for most of the day has now expired. And heres a view from the exploratorium camera looking back at a portion of the San Francisco skyline. Current temperature readings are in the mid 60s at San Francisco and oakland and palo alto, 70 at mountain view, 75 at san jose, 54 at half moon bay. Nice view from mount tam looking down onto the bay. Often this view would be obstructed this time of the night by the marine layer, but its not there right now, which is why its so mild out there. 62 degrees in santa rosa right now. We have 59 at novato, napa, 69, 64 in fairfield and we have low 70s at concord and livermore. One more live view from emeryville. Nice calm view of the of the bay there and the town of emeryville. These are our forecast headlines as excuse me cooler coast tomorrow but still quite warm inland. Thatll be the last day of extreme warmth for a while. Clouds will increase monday and tuesday with a chance of showers mainly late monday into early tuesday. And we can expect a much cooler weather pattern early next week and continuing actually at least into the middle of the week for tonight, well see clouds increasing near the coastline and therell be some drizzle offshore, but itll be dry over land areas overnight lows will be in the mid 50s along the coastline, mainly upper 50s in the north bay and right around the bay shoreline, inland east bay will still be pretty mild with lows in the low to mid 60s in some spots and a similar range of lows down in the south bay overnight. Tomorrows highs 65 at half moon bay, 70 here in San Francisco under sunny skies, mainly upper 70s around the bay shoreline highs in the mid to upper 80s in the north bay, the inland east bay will be our warmest region as it often is with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s tomorrow. So thats the coolest weve seen. High temperatures in the inland east bay for the last four days or so and mid to upper 80s in the south bay here in San Francisco, another sunny day for the final day of fleet week and for the air show of the blue angels. So in the Late Afternoon we may see a little bit of a marine layer developing. Perhaps a few coastal clouds will push in through the golden gate, but should not obscure our viewing for the blue angels tomorrow. So look for a nice, sunny and mild day here in San Francisco. San francisco once again tomorrow. And then we get a sharp change in our weather pattern on monday and tuesday with temperatures dropping sharply because of a cold front that will be swinging through a weak one early monday. Many say thats critical to the local businesses that are still recovering from the pandemic, like other major cities are doing it and coming back to life. Abc7 News Reporter leanne melendez with a look at how the goal to reinvent Market Street is going. In 1962, Market Street was on the verge of a major restoration project which back then caught the attention of the new york times. That came after a city report titled what to do about Market Street. Back then, the goal was to add new life into Market Street as a center for shopping, business and entertainment. But wait a minute. Its 2023 is in San Francisco trying to do that again. Alex hanna has owned Oxford Street clothing for 30 years. There were lots of traffic. Now the traffic is very slow. The only thing we keeping us here because we have a loyal customer. If you depend on the traffic i want, you wont be survive. That foot traffic or car traffic, both of them is hurting. He initially blames the demise of some businesses on the citys efforts to slowly begin banning private cars. But then in 2012, there was renewed hope for the revital ization of the area. When twitter and other businesses occupied residency here. But that proved not to be the answer. Everyone anticipated. And then just months before the pandemic, the city removed all car traffic from Market Street. Thats when the number of bicyclists on Market Street increased by 25. Then the city shut down and those workers that were supposed to revitalize the neighborhood dwindled because hardly anyone was coming to work downtown. Even the Bicycle Coalition admits bike commuting downtown is nowhere near what it once was. We wanted to see why many bicyclists were staying away from Market Street so we rode. One of the things that bicyclists often complain about is the uneven surfaces on Market Street, not to mention the potholes and you really have to Pay Attention because you can really get seriously hurt with the city needs to do in the department of public works needs to do is they need to start repaving our streets wherever they are. We would like the bike lanes to also be part of that because if you make safe pavement for people biking, they will use those streets, she says. Any revits ization of Market Street has to include bicyclists and pedestrian as there is a massive construction project underway. Part of that better Market Street makeover. The project was sold on a much larger scale. It was supposed to make Market Street car free from octavia street to the embarcadero, but the city had to return the federal money for the project because it was unable to meet an imposed deadline. There are lots of unfulfilled promises, but that doesnt mean in that better Market Street cant continue to be worked towards a future of sustainable transportation. Business owners along Market Street insist customers will not return unless they feel safe and the area is clean. Just the cleanliness are, you know, dont like stepping in poop every other day. So supervisor matt dorsey wants to create a downtown commercial core police district. It would dedicate Police Patrols in the area, if you can imagine sort of an area that would be from the Ferry Building down Market Street down to market and van ness. It should also encompass union square. It should also encompass the Moscone Center Convention Areas and the hotels around there. We need to get people to say, lets go to Market Street. Like, lets do stuff on Market Street. Many shuttle is a Small Business owner who also happens to be on the municipal transportation board as a San Francisco resident, hed like to see a section of Market Street converted into a promenade. Maybe even turn it into a market, maybe plant a Redwood Grove landscape. It flowers music, poetry, activations actually create something happening on the street that brings people to Market Street to do things. This is a beautiful city. I love it. But unfortunately we were facing lots of problems here with the homeless, with the shoplifter, with, you know, its very tough. Its not a piece of cake. Now its going to take time. Its going to take a lot of time. A long time. You could say, in San Francisco. Leanne melendez, abc7 news. Officials in maui are urging the governor of hawaii to delay the reopening of the western side of the island tomorrow to tourists. This chapel inspired in neoclassical design , the chapel modeled after a Dominican Monastery in england, is part of the Santa Sabina Center, a nondenominational place for meditation and spiritual retreat. People who come here come to recover, a sense of themselves built near Dominican University in 1939. The center originally housed young women preparing to enter the religious order. It was the Prayer Chapel for the sisters to celebrate. Morning and evening prayer together. But the orders dwindling numbers and rising cost of maintenance has forced the sisters to make a tough choice and sell the center they love. A mix is a good way of putting it. Lauren were getting out of a hot spell, a heat wave, actually, and into a period of cooling that might even bring some rainfall for tonight. Well see increasing clouds near the coastline, maybe even some drizzle offshore. Your overnight lows will range from upper 50s to low 60s for the most part. Highs tomorrow still on the warm side, but not the extreme heat that weve seen the last few days. So inland highs will warm up to about 88, 89, maybe 90 degrees right around the bay shoreline, mid to upper 70s on the coast mid 60s where we have seen 80s for the last several days. Now the forecast ahead shows highs on monday dropping off sharply to mainly 60s and low 70s a same range on tuesday. Might even get a little bit of shower activity on monday. So next week starts with quite a sharp cooldown. Heres the accuweather 70 forecast. The broncos are also paying him 10 million while the niners are just paying the veterans minimum. Gregory playing opposite nick bosa could be a nightmare for quarterbacks, but he will not be ready to play on sunday. On the offensive side of the ball, Christian Mccaffrey has scored a touchdown in 13 straight games. Thats a 49 ers record. And if he scores on sunday, cmc will become the first niners since roger craig in 1985 with a touchdown in each game through the first five weeks of the season. The niners have knocked dallas out of the playoffs two years in a row. But mccaffrey says past results may not be a factor in future outcomes. Any time you look at a game from the years past, you know, maybe itll be similar. Maybe it wont be. But i try not to go into games predicting anything, you know, you just you have your tracks, you have your reads, you know where to put your eyes, you know, your assignment. And then after that, its, you know, you just got to react and play extremely instinctually and go from there. Big barry connections for the rangers orioles, bruce bochy. Of course we know. But os manager brandon hyde is a santa rosa native, went to Montgomery High School rangers never trailed in this one. Josh young makes it three one in the sixth. He hits that into a sea of orange. Lets bash orioles fans, though. Theyre still hype for their team. They got the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth. Former a jonah heim throws out Gunnar Henderson trying to steal now hes going to be fired up to the os try to say the attempted steal was a miscommunication but it didnt work. Bochy and the rangers win three two and take the early one zero series lead. How about dusty baker in the defending champion astros opening up against the twins . Heres the view from ump cam how cool is that . Yordan alvarez, a two run blast in the third to give the astros a three nothing lead. A lot of playoff experience in that dugout right there. And its so nice he does it twice. Alvarez hits it deep down the line. The astros win at six four and its the 10th straight time theyve opened the Division Series with a win. Clayton kershaw getting the start in game one for the dodgers against the diamondbacks. It did not go well. The first five, dbacks got a hit capped by gabriel morenos three run blast, making it five nothing in a flash. Kershaw cant believe it. And this right here is a great bat flip. Still in the first former giant Evan Longoria with an rbi double on his birthday to make it six nothing. Longos got five postseason rbi on his birthday. Thats an mlb record, and thats going to do it for kershaw. Just 35 pitches, giving up six runs. The dbacks blast, the dodgers 11 two. Braves hosting the phillies in game one of the nlds one zero. Phils in the sixth. Bryce harper clobbers this one to right. And that thing got out in a hurry. The phillies jump out to a20 lead. The braves were an offensive juggernaut this year, struggled in this one. Ozzie albies, the two on trey turner with a diving stop to start the inning, ending double play. The phillies take game one on the road three zero, the final uh. Lets kick it. Jeremy ebobisse and the quakes would clinch a playoff spot with a win over dallas just three minutes in ebobisse he gives the quakes the early lead and some hope and they would hold on to that lead through half time. But in the 57th minute dow, dallas comes up with the equalizer buzzer. This ends in a one all draw and the quakes playoff fate will not be determined until decision day next week.
