A woman was hit by another car driven by a person and then ended up trapped underneath the autonomous vehicle. Good evening. Thank you for joining us. Im dan ashley. And im karina nova. It is the next iteration of safety concerns surround autonomous vehicles. But the initial crash was caused, as you mentioned, by a human driver. Thats the key point here. Now, police are searching for the driver of the black sedan who first hit the pedestrian at fih and Market Streets before driving away. This happened about 930 last night. Abc seven News Reporter suzanne fawn joins us live from the newsroom with the very latest suzanne. So, karina, dan crews showed the media dash cam video of the dramatic collision, but the company would not let us share the video with viewers. So as not to compromise the Police Investigation in this incident was so serious that emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to rescue the person. Rescuers work to secure the vehicle in place and extricate the victim quickly. Within three minutes, crews had to use the jaws of life to free a pedestrian in trapped underneath the cruise vehicle on monday night. Its a first for police and Fire Departments involving a driverless car. The victim was found to be under the left rear wheel of the vehicle, according to police, a black sedan struck a woman crossing the street at fifth and market on monday night. Immediately after that collision, an empty cruise car in the lane beside the sedan hit the same person this morning. Crews allowed abc7 news staff to review the video but not record it nor share it. Reporter Gloria Rodriguez describes what she saw in the dash cam. The black sedan hits the pedestrian very hard. It was just very graphic. The pedestrian then goes flying into the other lane and thats when the av then hits a pedestrian. The video stops soon after that. So we cant tell how long the pedestrian is there on the ground with the av over on top of the pedestrian. We reached out to crews asking for further clarification today, cruise says its working with police in their investigation. And in a statement, it also said, quote, the av then braked aggressively to minimize the impact and at the request of the police, the av was kept in place. Sam abuelsamid is an Automotive Technology analyst with guidehouse insights. He says that automated driving systems are constantly adding data. Sometimes times though, things happen so quickly that there is simply nothing you can do, no matter how well you are tracking all of the other road users around you, abuelsamid says. A driverless car most likely could not have avoided the collision on monday night. Theres basic physics. I mean, when you have a400 0 pound vehicle, it is inherently going to take a certain amount of time to stop. And according to San Francisco police, the woman who was struck is in serious condition at San Francisco General Hospital with multiple traumatic injuries. Again police are still looking for the driver of the black sedan involved in the initial collision. That driver left the scene after hitting the woman. Live in the newsroom. Suzanne fan, abc seven news. All right, suzanne, just a terrible story all the way around. We know police are looking for the hit and run drivers, you told us. But what might happen with cruise in the wake of this incident . So the dmv is the agency in california that regulates the testing and permits for avs. Now, all av companies are required to report crashes to the dmv for investigation. If the dmv finds that an av was at fault, they could modify or revoke a companys permit. But again, that does not sound like the situation for cruise in this incident. Back to you. It doesnt. Okay, suzanne, thank you very much. Tonight, we are learning new details about the tragic drownings that happened at a san jose daycare yesterday. Police spoke for the first time this afternoon about the investigation thats now underway. And abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes was there and he has the latest. Its a tragedy that has shocked the community. Three children fell into this pool at a san jose home daycare. One was hospitalized with nonlife threatening injuries. Two drowned. We now know from the Santa Clara County coroner that they were two one year old girls. This is the type of call thats the worst that a parent can receive as a department. Were going to investigate this. Police were called to the scene after nine monday morning for a welfare check. Its not clear yet who made that initial call and how the children got into the pool. Police say homicide detectives are investigating, along with the department of family and childrens services, the Santa Clara County District Attorneys Office confirmed with abc seven that they are reviewing the case to see if charges will be filed. According to the department of social services, the Home Daycare Center was licensed in january of 2021 to 2 women. The pool was noted as an off limits area in their license. Christina andrews of morgan hill founded a nonprofit to teach kids survival skills in the water. Its named courtneys course after her young daughter, courtney, died in a friends pool. I feel for those parents so deeply because , as you know, i know firsthand what it feels like to lose a child. To this, though details are still not clear as to how the kids at the daycare got into the pool. Andrew says its critical that children learn survival skills in the water and pools are secure. Theres a total difference between a fence around a pool and a pool fence. This is actually designed to keep children out. So cannot be climbed. But beyond just the fence, andrew says that homes need layers of protection. Open this door right now. It is going to be an obnoxious, loud noise that goes off immediately. Other measures include a keypad on the gate leading into the backyard, also an automatic pool cover that covers the pool entirely. Survival swim lessons is the last layer of protection aside from cpr. But the last layer of protection that the child has, and that is not reliant on any human but the child themselves. As for the investigation into that san jose daycare, police say it will take several months in san jose, zach fuentes, abc seven news. The move to oust mccarthy is yet another escalation of long standing tensions between Gene Mccarthy and a bloc of conservative hardliners. In his party. If you throw a speaker out that has 99 of their conference out, that kept government open and paid the troops, i think were in a really bad place for how were going to run congress. And then of course, friday, saturday and sunday, weve got clear skies, no marine layer at all developing until about sunday. So no interference with the blue angels air shows.
