This morning we are learning now new details of how they say they tracked down the suspect and brought her home. Lets go to Stephanie Ramos whos in upstate new york for us. Good morning, stephanie. Reporter robin, good morning. As each hour went on in this search, hope faded. Agencies like the new York State Police, the fbi, all assisting in that massive search for charlotte. When she was found, there was a collective sigh of relief. Police are trying to figure out if charlottes family was deliberately targeted. Relief and joy this morning, missing 9yearold Charlotte Sena found alive after a heart pounding 48 hour search. Shes going home. Thats the story. Charlotte will be going home. Reporter family and friends gathered at a vigil in upstate new york overnight erupting in cheers the moment they got the news. [ cheers ] charlottes family overcome, thanking the hundreds of rescuers who jumped into action after she disappeared on saturday while biking with friends. Police believing she was abducted. On monday new York State Police confirming charlotte was found in good health and a suspect was taken into custody after leaving a ransom note at the family home. State police made me go to the mailbox and identify what is a ransom note that had been left behind for charlotte. 4 20 in the morning. Opens the mailbox and inserts the ransom note, leaving the critical piece of evidence behind, his own fingerprint. Reporter the suspect 47yearold Craig Nelson Ross jr. Hes been charged with kidnapping in the first degree. New york Governor Hochul saying overnight they found him and charlotte in a camper behind his mothers home 13 miles from the senas house. Charlotte was found in a cabinet. The little girl was found in a cabinet covered. She was rescued. Reporter charlotte taken to a local hospital. The governor saying she appeared to be out wardly physically unharmed. Charlotte had last been seen at 6 15 saturday evening at the state park where she was camping with her family. Riding bikes with friends around this loop, when she decided to go around it one last time by herself before sunset. When the 4th grader didnt return after 15 minutes her parents started searching. At 6 45 her bike was found along the path but charlotte was gone. You can never be too careful with kids. Pay attention to where theyre at. For her to ride her bike around that loop would take her four, five minutes. You think theyre safe doing that at 9 years old, but you have to be paying attention to your surroundings all the time. Reporter police say a fingerprint on the ransom note was matched from the suspects arrest in this area for driving while intoxicated. The governor said that charges are expected. Overnight charlottes family releasing a statement saying they are so thankful and thrilled to have charlotte home. They do understand this is not the outcome for everyone but they are thankful. They study here how wildfires work. Thats why they have this bank of embers generators. Beyond that they have a wall of fans. They want to learn how to better protect structures from wild fires. You can see they have stuff cooking already in the mulch. This is how quickly it catches. Now, up in california, we have wildfires as a part of life. We are starting to see fires catch in places like louisiana and places that were considered lush. For the uninitiated, it might seem theres nothing you can do when a wildfire is coming right at you, your community or your home. But we have learned here there are a number of practical steps you can take to help protect your home and your family. Were at a one of a kind Test Facility where researchers studies the science of wildfires. Something i spent much of my career covering in california. Wow the intensity of that is enormous. The heat is overwhelming. Theres nothing they can do with that wind. Were going to the other side of the car. Here at the Insurance Institute for business and home safety or ibhs, that powerful wind is simulated by this towering wall of more than 100 industrial strength fans, blasting those red hot embers towards structures. This helps scientists learn what kinds of Building Materials will burn and what can withstand the hot fury of mother nature. Experts say its those scorching embers, though tiny, that can turn small fires into town destroying events. It was wind driven embers in maui in august that experts say put the historic and deadly inferno to spread so much killing at least 97 people and engulfing more than 2,000 structures. Most of them homes. But not this one featured in the honolulu civil beat, virtually unscathed. Some called it a miracle. But researchers at ibhs point to two factors that likely saved the structure. A commercial grade steel roof and river stones surrounding the home. The homeowners telling the civil beat they replaced their traditional landscaping with the stones, not to protect their home from fire, but from water and termite damage. Little did they know one of the key tactics ibhs teaches is creating a minimum of a five foot fire resistant buffer zone around your home using hard scapes and noncombustible fencing. Think of it like your moat. You are keeping wildfire and embers away from your structure. Reporter this time lapse shows fire ignited between two structure. Watch as the fire never reaches the home on the right because it cant pass through that metal fence. The wooden fence on the left acts like a wick of a candle bringing the fire directly to the house. Now theyve built a home. Just for us. You can see that there are two distinct sides. One has this wooden mulch outside. Its in a wooden deck, wooden siding. The other side is a wild fire prepared home. These are fire resistant siding, metal in the deck. That fence, the part that touches the house, that is also made out of metal. You can see this hardscaping all around. So under the supervision of the fire department, we turn on that embers machine. In just minutes this is the start of a fire. Right underneath this bush here. Right next to the deck. This could be the thing that ignites this whole house here. This deck, the one made out of steel, nothing. This deck right now catching fire. That thing is going to blow up. This deck is now completely engulfed in flames. It is going to take this house. Reporter two minutes later i saw it do exactly that. All the while the right side remained seemingly untouched. This house is virtually gone. You can hear, you can feel the heat from those flames. Absolutely massive. You can see how quickly that wooden side of this house was engulfed in flames. Its in the eves right now, which also means its going through though vents. Reporter though vents were covered in steel protective mesh but they were the wrong side. The hole was so big, they let the embers through. Rule of thumb here is you dont want mesh that can have a nail or a golf tee go through it. You want it to be finer than that, something that can block this. That way the embers cant get through that mesh and into your home. Right now firefighters are about to come in and douse this thing because its gotten too hot. So this is whats left of the house. You can see this is the sigh that was built with that fire resistant material. It is almost completely unscathed. Check that out, guys. Even the ornament did not burn. This is the side with the wooden siding, wooden roof. It is almost completely charred. The vinyl gutter is completely destroyed. The first line of defense for houses is often the roof. But the good news is, the vast majority of homes in america have class a rated roofs. The experts say weve got to focus on that five foot defensible perimeter around your house. Thats where you dont want any of this mulch like that, that can burn. You dont want shrubbery. You want hardscaping to create that barrier to protect. Were going to light a switch in a second. Im going to explain why. I live in california. We love our juniper bushes. They are dangerous. You dont want these next to your house. What weve done here is simulate a juniper bush getting struck by an ember. There is a reason that they call juniper bushes little green gas cans, because they burn so fast, so hot and you have Something Like this right up against your house, it could be catastrophic. Thats why you want that defensible border. Guys . We said wow about five times just watching that. So much informative information. Matt, if a fire is expected to head your way, what are some steps that people should be taking . Reporter the first is you want to have a plan. And that starts with getting that five foot defensible barrier around your house. You want to clear toys, wooden tools like these. You want to make space for that. You also need to create a plan. Know the exit routes out of your community. Get a go bag ready to go. Most importantly, do not stick around to try to protect your house. Its not worth it. Your life is the most important thing. There are calls for an investigation into the xceo of abercrombie and fitch and his partner here in the u. S. The two accused of recruiting men for sex at lavish parties they hosted around the world. This morning former abercrombie and fitch ceo Mike Jeffreys accused of exploiting men for sex starting in 2009 while he was still running the company until his departure in 2014. I questioned many times how difficult or what i could have done, if i could have left. Reporter according to a new bbc investigation, the abercrombie guys, the dark side of cool, jeffreys and his partner, matthew smith, hosted parties in various cities arpbdz the world and would use a middle man identified as James Jacobson to recruit young men to attend. Some of the accusers claim they were misled, never told sex was involved and say they were lured under the guise of modelling opportunities. Others say they understood the parties would be sexual but not what they were expected to do. All say they felt pressured into signing nondisclosure arguments. There wasnt a lot of time to look through and feel comfortable. I dont recall what was in it. It was taken away immediately after signing it. Reporter jacobson telling the bbc everyone i came into contact with who attended these events went in with their eyes wide open. These alleged criminal acts on behalf of mr. Jeffries could affect the actual brand if any point in time he was on company time, utilizing Company Resources or money. It could fall back on the company. Under his leadership, abercrombie and fitch was the subject of multiple allegations related to a discriminatory and toxic Work Environment that prompted lawsuits and settlements. Jeffries stepped down as ceo and this morning the company he once led telling abc news, we are appalled and disgusted by the behavior described in the allegations adding since being contacted by the bbc, we have engaged in outside law firm to conduct an independent investigation into the issues raised. Rebecca miller, you need someone as brilliant and talented as Rebecca Miller to put it all together. We have been talking about the movie. We feel very lucky to talk about the movie, very fortunate to have this interim agreement from our union. The thing that we keep coming back to is lot of time people talk about films as a romantic comedy. This is sort of a love comedy. Its not just about romantic love. Its an ensemble film in which people experience love in all sorts of ways. Its considered a nod to what was considered a screwball comedy of the 30s and 40s but with a modern twist, i might add. When you first read the script, what did you think, marisa . I was just so, so excited. Like, i really havent been in so long. I really couldnt contain myself. I just called rebecca right away, right away. I read the script overnight, called her and was unabashed. [ laughter ] i just thought, my deal is going to be horrible. [ laughter ] id do it for anything. Its true. We really did it for anything anyway. It was just so thrilling. Every page was another surprise. All the characters are so well rounded and original. You are being guided through the feeling of being lost in a film. Then at a certain point later in the film everything clicks into place and it just cracked my heart open. One of my favorite movies growing up was pretty woman. I have no idea what it was about. No truly was in the dark about that. I kind of focused on the love story aspect of it. I loved the makeover. Theres an opera scene in it. My younger self thought it was a beautiful thing. I responded to the music and the idea that it was something, we have parts of ourselves that need to feed ourselves differently. For me, operatic music hits a part of my soul. I feel really released by it. That was the first time i ever experienced it as a child. Who knew . Pretty woman . [ laughter ] speaking of music, i mean, we got star power right here. But the boss, the boss actually wrote a song for the movie addicted to romance. I guess you both like the song . How was that . I love him. What more do you want . We know he saw the movie. [ laughter ] one of the things i want to say, rebecca is such a beloved person and filmmaker within our community. Lot of people she sent the film to were like, i love you, the film is great. The level that we got back from people who had seen the film, like Bruce Springsteen was her dream. He saw the movie and felt connected to it that he wanted to write a song for it. You know . That says a lot. It does. What do you hope audiences think when they leave the theater . Think. Maybe feel. The movie is generous. Generosity of spirits. Its for fathers and their daughters and their sons, anyone can read it. Theres big adventure, but its got those values of like, yeah, you can do this. I love that, being a girl dad myself. Both of you can read it. I need to read it with my girls. What do you hope young adults take away from the book . Well, ill tell you what. If anyone felt marginalized or felt bullied or, you know, just want to find their power, this is an action adventure. Its embedded with history. Rosie gets given four rules by a ghost queen. Queen elizabeth is mother who gets executed. She gets given this book with four rules in it. These four rules say, i think you live by these rules. Okay. First rule is have courage. Yep. Second one is united we stand. We need that in american football, right. And here. Third one never give up. Fourth one to thine own self be true. If you dont like these rules, make up your own. And when she passed away, i had to have this. This makes me feel like the people we love are never far away. You know . Yep. Give everybody an idea. You were just saying, ben, this book is not a typical design book. No, its not. I have read it several times. Yesterday we were doing an interview and i started to thumb through it. I had to close it because i got teary eyed. Theres story there. Its not just pretty pictures. Its a night stand book, not a coffee table book. Thats the distinction between this and a lot of books about home. You are bigger than pretty. I want to focus more on, our houses dont have to look like theyre in magazines to be loved and to be wonderful. Theyre still beautiful. Thats what you see in the book. Im conflicted about this.
