Why is it every man comes before me and says, nice lady, you really dont know . Her career marked by many firsts with an impact spanning genders and generations. May she rest in peace and may her legacy continue to inspire us all. Good evening, and thank you for joining us. Im ahmad daetz. And im dan ashley. Thank you for being with us. Were dedicating the majority of tonights newscast to Dianne Feinstein, remembering the tremendous impact that she had on the bay area, california, and of course, the country. All day today, people have come by feinstein, San Francisco, home to leave flowers and share their memories of the impact she has had on their lives. You can see well show you as we go on. Tonight, a growing memorial and on the senate floor feinstein seat was draped in black cloth on it, a vase holding a bouquet of white roses. All right. Were going to begin our Team Coverage with abc7 News Reporter cornell bernard live at San Francisco city hall. Thats where feinstein famously turned a gut wrenching crisis into action decades ago. Cornell. Yeah alma and alma and dan mayor breed said it earlier today. You cant think of San Francisco without thinking of senator Dianne Feinstein. And today all the flags here at city hall at half staff in memory of her, its where feinstein once served as mayor during a time of triumph and tragedy. Of course, today many are reflecting on her long political career. Feinstein was a badass in San Francisco. Diana vanderveer from San Francisco, speaking her mind about a woman she respected. She kicked doors open for my tax bracket, even though she was not in it. Diana and others came to city hall to sign this public condolence book for Dianne Feinstein. Tanya chacon wrote this message about meeting feinstein as a little girl and how it inspired her to be a strong woman in her community as a woman. And in that role of leadership, she paved the way for so many women. Yeah, and im here at city hall now, and i remember that. I think about that that legacy. People have been leaving flowers at feinsteins statue inside city hall. You cant think about San Francisco without thinking about Dianne Feinstein. Mayor london breed paying tribute to her predecessor, the first woman to lead the city at a dark time following the assassination of mayor George Moscone and supervisor harvey milk. She worked hard for this city. She was a beacon of hope and inspiration during a very dark and tragic time, which cemented cemented her legacy as an extraordinary leader for our city and for our country. Breed says feinstein was instrumental in rescuing San Franciscos cable cars by raising public and private funds to save the railway. She also helped build pier 39 in the late 70s. Now one of the citys top tourist attractions. Dianne was the kind of mayor who would show up at fire scenes in the middle of the night, and she there was no part of the government that did not have her thumbprint on it. Supervisor matt dorsey says feinstein was a champion for the Lgbtq Community during the aids crisis at a time when the Reagan Administration wouldnt say the word aids. Dianne feinstein was leading the nation on that. San franciscos budget on hiv and aids was bigger than the federal government budget. I will miss her trying to tell me what to do. Former mayor willie brown believes feinsteins greatest achievement was the federal assault weapons ban signed into law in 1994. It expired in 2004. Brown dismisses critics who called for her to step aside due to age and declining health and the fact that she was able to convince her colleagues on the republican side of the aisle to embrace the idea of an assault weapon ban those are the kind of things that she will be remembered for, not that she got to be old and feeble. For diana, its a day to pay respects and say goodbye. Thank you, Dianne Feinstein. Im truly grateful. Mayor breed said that Dianne Feinstein helped make San Francisco an International Destination by building relationships with sister cities around the world. Breed also said that feinstein really never stopped being mayor of San Francisco. She would often get phone calls from the senator with tips and advice from broken sidewalks to advice about public safety. She said she was still micromanaging this city she loved quite a legacy here. Were live in San Francisco. Cornell barnard, abc seven news. All right, cornell, thank you. Senator feinstein cast her final vote around noon yesterday. She walked unassisted on the senate floor and voted in favor of a short term spending bill intended to avert a government shutdown. The senator passed away later that night. Less than 24 hours after casting her final vote. Senator Chuck Schumer eulogized feinstein in the same chamber, barely holding back tears, expressing his gratitude and the sign of a friend is someone who stands by your side to fight the good fight on the good days and on the bad. Dianne feinstein was all of this and more. Senator feinstein represented california for more than 30 years. She was the longest serving woman in the senate, as well as the first female senator from the state of california. All right. Here is a quick look, just a quick look at some of the feinstein accomplishments during her more than three decades in congress in 2017. Senator feinstein became the top democrat on the Senate Judiciary committee, the first woman to ever assume that role. Her office says senator feinstein authored the first major cybersecurity bill to be signed into law in years. She also introduced and helped secure passage of legislation to extend violence against women act until 2027. Feinstein worked to protect more than 7 million acres of california desert, and she also passed two bills to provide funding to preserve and restore lake tahoe in San Francisco, the latest replacement of the Iconic Castro rainbow flag is being dedicated to senator feinstein without doubt, the work she did. I dont know where my life would be. Shes paved so many steps for women everywhere, and shes done so much for our community as a whole. And so today, as we lower the flag in memoriam for Dianne Feinstein, we raise the rainbow flag as a beacon of hope for people everywhere. Feinstein was among the first in Public Office to advocate for gay rights in the us as she continued to do throughout her career. This new flag is raised ahead of the castro street fair, which will be this sunday, october first. The Merchants Association says the flag is replaced 3 to 4 times a year in the nations capital. Per senate tradition, feinsteins desk was draped with a black cloth with a vase of White Flowers atop it, very dramatic and moving remembrance is flooded from both sides of the aisle and both houses of congress, as lawmakers remembered feinstein as an inspiring fashion trailblazer and pioneer for women, she was a historic figure, trailblazer for women and a great friend. Diane made her mark on everything from National Security to the environment to gun safety to protecting civil liberties. Country is going to miss her dearly. I speak on behalf of all of us when i say that it is with profound sadness that we bid farewell to my dear friend colleague. And outright champion for the state of california, senator Dianne Feinstein. Mr. Speaker, i ask unanimous consent that all present in the chamber, as well as members and staff throughout the capitol to please rise for a moment of silence and remembrance of the late honorable senator Dianne Feinstein. Flags capitol were lowered to half staff, as were flags at city buildings in San Francisco, los angeles and throughout california. People who worked alongside senator Dianne Feinstein are remembering her tonight as a colleague and a friend and abc7 News ReporterMelanie Woodrow continues our Team Coverage on this. She is in the newsroom. Melanie dan, several people i spoke with said they credit senator feinstein for launching their careers and perhaps less known that she was also often credited with helping others find love. I have this photo from election night, 1992. Dianne and i made history together. Its the year former senator Barbara Boxer says the number of women in the senate tripled, but only went from 2 to 6. I was unknown literally in the state, so she could have easily said, you know what, barbara . You go your way, ill go mine. But she grabbed my hand and she held it all the way through. The duo sometimes referred to as the thelma and louise of the senate, served together 24 years. Boxer isnt the only one who, in part, credits senator Dianne Feinstein for their career. Shes such an important part of sort of the fabric of me. Jim wunderman, now president and ceo of the Bay Area Council , was feinsteins special assistant from 1983 to 1988. He recalls interning for her in the mayors office. Mayor feinstein said, well, you know, i think when jim graduates, because it was in my now in my last year at San Francisco state, she said, maybe well hire him. You know, she sort of put that out there. Senator feinstein wasnt just a career maker. Boxer says she was also a matchmaker. She also loved to fix people up on dates and took great credit for a few marriages. That happened. And she was always searching around. If there was someone in the senate who was single, well, i have a great guy for you. I have a great gal for you. But her greatest legacy, perhaps, will be her work in the senate. Certainly her work on the violence against women act was i dont know that that would have passed into law except for her tremendous efforts. Representative zoe lofgren says senator feinstein was an avid researcher, one of her favorite phrases. Well, im going to have to read more about that. Im going to have to learn more about that. Her lifes work, a life calling. She was going to do it to the last second. And thats what she did. She expected a lot. She gave a lot, but she left on her own terms. And we certainly admire, admire and respect her with those who knew her best. Now remembering her with love. Rest in peace, dianne. Rest in peace. She had a hard year and she never stopped fulfilling her responsibilities. So she deserves to rest in peace. Former senator boxer also shared that senator feinstein was quite the gift giver whose gifts may have been a hint. She showed me a watch that senator feinstein gave her and joked it was probably because she didnt like the one that she had been wearing in the newsroom. Melanie woodrow, abc seven news. Thank you, melanie. And senator Dianne Feinsteins death creates a vacancy in the senate at a time when democrats hold the slight majority in the chamber. A look at some potential replacements. Also, we head to feinstein, San Francisco neighborhood to see how people who may have not known her personally are compelled to show their love and respect. Stay with us. And our coverage on the death of senator Dianne Feinstein continues right after this i work for the city of new york as a police administrator. I oversee approximately 20 people and my memory just has to be sharp. I always hear people say, you know, when you get older, you know, people lose memory. I didnt want to be that person. I decided to give prevagen a try. My memory became much sharper. I remembered more ive been taking prevagen for four years now. Prevagen. At stores everywhere without a prescription. People can go there to pay their respects. There is a book of condolences and a memorial for feinstein on the fourth floor door and a question now on the minds of a lot of people. Who will replace Dianne Feinstein in congress . Governor newsom has pledged to Governor Newsom, rather, has pledged to pick a black woman to fill the seat. Abcs seven News Reporter zach fuentes has a look at some of the potential choices. As the country and state processes the death of senator Dianne Feinstein, attention is also focused on who will fill her senate seat and how that will happen. So Governor Newsom has a big decision to make, and he has a very short time to make it. The last time the governor had to appoint someone to the senate was when Kamala Harris became vice president. He appointed then secretary of state alex padilla. He took five weeks to make that decision. He doesnt have that luxury now right now, were facing a government shutdown. We democrats have a narrow majority in the senate. Adam schiff, barbara lee and katie porter entered the race for feinsteins seat after she announced she wouldnt seek reelection in 2024. In his statement honoring feinstein friday, newsom said nothing about who would fill her seat. But earlier this month, on nbcs meet the press, newsom said he would not select any of the candidates if he was faced with appointing someone so instead he would put in someone to be an interim caretaker until next years election, when he has said would be a black woman. Some of the names that have risen to the forefront have been shirley weber, who was appointed to replace alex padilla as a secretary of state. We also have malia cohen, whos also been mentioned, and she is currently our state comptroller. And holly mitchell, whos worked with the Newsom Campaign in previous. And shes a current la county supervisor, one of the other names, San Francisco mayor london breed, who did not want to weigh in on that possibility friday. And that conversation could be saved for another day. I want to really, truly make sure that, you know, that thats the governors responsibility and im sure he is all ready working on it and doing what he needs to do, regardless of who fills that seat, experts say they wont have the benefit of the seniority. Feinstein had. California will still be very important, given again, the size and, you know, the number of important issues that impact our state. Zach fuentes, abc7 news flower flowers have appeared in front of the late senator Dianne Feinsteins house in San Francisco. Our abc seven news team was at her home in Pacific Heights today as a handful of people stopped by to pay their respects. She stepped in to this city as mayor under very, very difficult circumstances many, many years ago. She has been an exceptional advocate for this city, a belief in this city, the Gay Community in this city. She has stood by firmly when others did not. Her commitment to the issues of not only San Francisco, but california and the nation have been exceptional. I feel honored that ive known her a little bit and that shes been my United States senator feinstein is being widely remembered for having not just her heart, but her mind and her devotion in San Francisco, even when her career took her to washington in and we have compiled all of our stories about senator Dianne Feinstein from todays breaking News Coverage to historic clips pulled from our archives. This season, the giants were in the hunt for a playoff spot as late as august, but the team tanked in september and could finish with a losing record. As far as the timing goes. This has been a topic of conversation in in the organization and its been on my mind. The thing that made the most sense was to go ahead with it and not wait a couple of days or wait till the end of the season. One reason for the giants move may be how the teams performance is affecting attended bats with three home games left. The giants are seeing the lowest season attendance in oracle park history.
