Her fellow Democratic Senators said it would be impossible to write the history of american politics without acknowledging the trail blazing past of senator feinstein. She was the longest serving female senator in the history of the United States. And that was just one of many in a long line of firsts for Diane Feinstein who broke barriers countless times as a woman in politics. 25 years ago there were no women on this committee. House speaker Kevin Mccarthy is scrambling, trying to put a last ditch effort on the floor but his own members are standing in the way. Millions of americans preparing to go without pay just one day out from a Government Shutdown. But House Speaker mccarthy cant even unite his own party. He rejected a bipartisan plan from the senate to keep the government funded, telling his own members if they vote for his proposal today, hell add measures to increase Border Security. Those holdouts not backing down, threatening to oust him as speaker. Do you believe Speaker Mccarthy has the votes . For what . No, he doesnt. Reporter it will fail . Yeah. Reporter Speaker Mccarthy firing back. Why would i side with biden on an open border when we have an opportunity to close it . Reporter the impact would stretch far beyond the border. 4 million government workers could lose a pay check, 7 million mothers could lose federal assistance to feed their families. And the reality is, not funding the government would only create more challenges at the border, leaving 20,000 Border Patrol officers without pay. Federal funds assisting local communities could be halted. That means were going to have to put more people on overtime. Its a National Security threat. Reporter border communities like laredo, texas, already weighing emergency declarations, struggling with a surge of migrants. If that shuts down, it will be total disruption and chaos. Reporter Senate Democrats calling mccarthys sudden demand for Border Security too little too late. If we need to put on the table some Border Security measures, we should take the next two months to figure out what that is rather than throwing something together in an afternoon and jamming it into this bill. Reporter so this morning mccarthy is in a box, at sharp odds with the senates top republicans. Shutting down the government is a choice and its a choice that would make the crisis at our southern border even worse. Reporter and facing a revolt from his own members. Is that a failure of leadership, the fact that republicans didnt start this process sooner . We are down to the wire here an were still going through it. Yes, it is a failure of leadership. Reporter republicans have been focused on launching an impeachment inquiry into president biden, holding a six hour hearing, alleging he benefitted from Hunter Bidens business dealings as vice president. Even their own witnesses testified theres no evidence of that. I do not believe that the Current Evidence would support articles of impeachment. That is something that an inquiry has to establish. I also do believe that the house has passed the threshold for an impeachment inquiry into the conduct of president biden. Reporter at this point it doesnt appear to be a question of if there will be a Government Shutdown, but more of a question of, how long will it last . In the coming days, there will be growing pressure on House Republicans to Work Together with democrats on a bipartisan solution, but they only appear to be digging in, michael. I just want to jump right in and ask you how could a Government Shutdown impact the military . Well, the first and most immediate impact, michael, is those 1. 3 million active duty troops wont get paid. Theyll still be out there deployed. Theyll still be defending this country, but they wont get paid. Nobody joins the military to get rich. Every pay check matters. You miss a couple, it starts to show up in terms of your ability to pay rent, pay groceries, pay your bills. It will have a significant effect on their morale. It wont just be them. It will be the Defense Department employees. Hundreds of thousands will be furloughed. Which means, they wont not only be getting paid, they wont be allowed to show up for work. That will have an impact on the way the pentagon does business every single day. Lot of these civilian employees that you talk about, they play a crucial role in running of the government. You know, domestic impact is pretty clear, but could this shutdown, if it does happen, also impact the on going aid to ukraine . Absolutely it could. For instance, we aoefr got enough money left, we can continue to support ukraine with some Security Assistance packages in the coming week. Without that supplemental funding, we asked for 13 billion just for defense related support without that supplemental funding. We could have a real significant problem supporting ukraine, as they get further into the fall and continue to try to prosecute this counter offensive. Not only that, but our ability to restock our pentagon shelves with inventory as we give it to ukraine will be limited but a the contract specialists, those civilians, that will be furloughed, on the be on the job. Good point there. How are you preparing for a possible shutdown . First thing is urging congress to do their job and to pass this funding bill an make sure that the government can keep working. But were also going to Great Lengths to inform the work force officially across the federal government about what this shutdown could mean for them. Making sure that they know, if theyre going to be furloughed, whos going to be furloughed, how that process will work, as far as making sure the troops will know were working very very hard to keep them getting paid while they continue to defense the country. Its the most common drug linked to overdose drugs. The traffickers are becoming so reckless. Enough fentanyl to until 1 Million People ended up on the subway during rush hour. A suspected drug trafficker who they say operated out of this apartment in the bronx is under arrest. Authorities seized 40 pound of fentanyl, enough to kill 1 Million People. Its completely reckless for these traffickers to be moving this poison in this fashion. They put a lot of new yorkers at risk. Reporter the dea said the drug mill was just blocks from the day care where a 1yearold died and three other children had to be revived with narcan after they were exposed to fentanyl. Investigators say they found bricks of the drug on top of play mats and beneath a trap door in the floor. Law enforcement sources tell abc news the owner, whos amonth several people now charged in the boys death had pulled her own toddler out of the day care fearing he would be exposed to fentanyl. The womans husband, who Authorities Say was seen amid surveillance images fleeing down a back alley, was caught in mexico. Hes now back in the u. S. And facing federal charges. In portland, oregon, police issuing a warning about a concerning number of juvenile fentanyl overdoses in recent months. Five children have died, including a 5yearold, earlier this month. In San Francisco, the father of a 10monthold said his baby overdosed on fentanyl at a playground and had to be revived with narcan. We want americans to know fentanyl is lethal. Average in california is 6. 07. Prices here have gone up 0. 79 a gallon in just the past month. There is a state law aimed at penaliing companies if a Panel Determines there is any price gouging. Republicans are asking for a special session to vote to suspend californias gas tax which is 0. 58 a gallon. They tried to do it last year. Democrats blocked them. Overnight Governor Newsom pushed the transition to a cheaper winter fuel blend. Thats what he did last year when prices were high. But that is a short term fix. Long term hes asking the division of Petroleum Market oversight to give him proposal on market reforms by january 1st. Hes accusing Oil Companies of lying and gouging californians to line their own pockets. For the time being, lot of people in california are especially hurting before they hit the roads. Juju . The new minimum wage for fast food workers in the state is 20 per hour, taking effect on april 1st of next year. About half million workers will be affected by this increase. Critics say the wage hike will be a burden on businesses which may then pass this cost on to the consumer. Governor newsom and proponents of the new law say this will help improve the lives of fast food employees an reward their sacrifice. 20 is a starting point. Thats when rob johnson said his coffee started tasting off so he set up hidden cameras around the house. This morning what those cameras found. This morning an alleged poisoning caught on camera. Tucson Police Investigating these videos obtained by abc news that airman Robbie Johnson claim shows his wife melody trying to poison him by pouring bleach into his coffee maker in the midst of a contentious divorce. In a probable cause complaint, johnson alleging the poisoning attempts began in march while the couple was in germany and continued when they moved back to arizona after noticing his coffee was tasting bad he bought pool chemical testing strips which shows high levels of chlorine in his coffee pot. The strip seen in this video police are investigating obtained by our affiliate kgun. Want to test this to show that its definitely tainted. It stinks. Same strip. Big change. Reporter johnson setting up multiple cameras in his house capturing the footage of his wife, who is now behind bars, charged with multiple felonies including attempt to commit first degree murder. According to the complaint, police found liquid that smelled like bleach inside the coffee maker and a container under her bathroom sink that smelled like bleach and had a very small amount of liquid inside of it. Her husband alleging she was trying to kill him to collect death benefits. Melody has not entered a plea. Her attorney declining to comment. The state will have to prove that her intention was to kill him. That this wasnt some bizarre effort to clean the coffee machine. That this wasnt some mistake. That she was out to get him. This story is heart breaking on so many levels. The woman you are about to meet is a widow, who was looking for companionship. Instead, she got her heart and wallet ripped open. She said she was tricked into giving more than 70,000, her life savings, by the way, to a man she met online. I had all that money. I dont think ill ever get it back. Reporter 76yearold jennifer said she met this man on face book who went by the name caleb. He claimed to be a doctor working for the red cross in yemen. It all looked legitimate. He was coming back to the states real soon and he was wanting to settle in a new area because he lost his wife. Reporter she told wtvd she formed a months long online relationship with caleb, growing so close at one point even messaging him, youre my dream come true. Caleb soon suggested they buy a house together when he returned from overseas. The plan . Caleb would pay 600,000 and she would pay the remaining 70,000 plus an additional 8,700 for expenses. Seemed like a perfect deal. Reporter she and her son raymond packed up their things, sold their home in georgia and drove to north carolina, hoping to start a new life. But when raymond went to look at the house, it was clearly not for sale. When i noticed someone was still living in the house. Knocked on the door. I automatically knew it was a scam. Reporter ftc reporting in 2022, romance scams cost nearly 70,000 people roughly 1. 3 billion. Experts sea they are so dangerous because they can feed on your emotions. If theyre claiming to be overseas, if theyre claiming they dont have access to a phone or a video chat to talk to you, it can only be through text or through an app. Or theyre giving you a hard story about a sick kid, a medical issue, they dont have money and then they start asking for money. If it feels too fast, if the i love you comes really quickly, those are the biggest red flags of a romance scam. Reporter as for jennifer, she and her son are living in a donated camper and shes reported the incident to the fbi. Experts say be on the lookout for all red flags. Speaker mccarthy still planning to bring his own proposal to the floor for a vote today. He is now scrambling to try to get his own members on board. This would fund the government for the next 30 days, add more Border Security measures. Still, he is facing several holdouts from within his own party. Time is running out. If congress does not act in this coming hours, 4 million government workers could lose a pay check, 7 million mothers could lose the federal assistance that they rely on in order to feed their families. In the coming days there will be growing pressure on those holdouts in the Republican Party to try to come around an make a deal to fund the government. But they only appear to be digging in. Guys . Tomorrow marks the day federal funding for pandemic era Child Care Centers end, meaning tens of thousands of them could shut down. Elizabeth schulze is in washington with more. Good morning, elizabeth. Reporter good morning, juju. Child care centers got a critical Financial Life line from the federal government during the pandemic. But tomorrow that funding is set to expire. Some are calling it a child care cliff. By one estimate up to 70,000 child care programs are at risk of closing. 3. 2 million kids could lose their day care spots. The reason why is a pandemic Era Relief Program that gave Child Care Centers 24 billion in grants ends september 30th. Congress hasnt yet renewed additional money. Providers relied on those funds to pay rent, buy supplies and boost their workers salary. The risk is providers could be forced to close or start charging families more. That could be a big burden for American House holds who are spending on average 27 of their income on child care. Michael. Elizabeth, thank you very much for that. Were going to turn to a new headline about heart health and cannabis. With the cdc reporting 10 of those who use marijuana have the potential of becoming addicted. A new study is linking heavy marijuana use with the risk of developing cardiac issues. Doc, tell us about this. Theyre looking at two common things. Cardiovascular disease, issues and cannabis use disorder. This study done in canada, what they found was a significant overlap and association, a link between heart health and cannabis that people with cannabis use disorder were at 60 increased risk of developing cardiovascular complications. The overall risk was still quite low. But again, these are in Young Healthy people. This was an increase risk when you compare it to people of the same age and sex who didnt use cannabis to that extent. Big picture, cdc estimates that three in ten people who use marijuana may actually have a cannabis use disorder. If you think that spectrum of use, severity, this potentially affects a lot of people. What is the criteria to know if you have the cannabis use disorder . And if you do meet the criteria, what should you do . Important questions. Its also important to realize this study is not talking about cannabis or marijuana use in comparison to something else. But some signs or symptoms for needing cannabis use disorder. If you use more cannabis than you intend to use. If you have difficulty controlling that use or youre developing problems in your work, school, home environment, or you need more of that substan to experience a high, these are classic signs that on that spectrum from occasional Recreational Use to a pathological use disorder you may need to reach out. People can call or text 988 if they are experiencing any type of Mental Health issue. That includes Substance Use problems. Great information, doc. Thank you, as always. Thank you.
