Happening today in the east bay, dozens of oakland Small Business owners are planning to shut down for either part or all of the day to protest rising crime. Recently the city missed its chance to get millions of dollars in grant money to help prevent retail theft. Business owners tell us the goal of this strike is to send a larger message to city hall that they dont feel safe even in their own businesses. Thats why dozens of these Small Businesses , including restaurants, Convenience Stores, clothing stores, even doctors offices, are staging a strike, primarily from ten to noon today to draw attention to their desperation. Although some merchants may choose to stay closed for the full day, some merchants say the crime has reached a breaking point in oakland and its hurting their bottom line. California has just become the first state to require gender neutral bathrooms in all public schools. Under a new law, just signed by the governor, all k through 12 schools have to have at least one gender neutral bathroom on campus by 2026. You can see that over the bay bridge, we have some showers as you approach the western span of the san mateo bridge. We have wet pavement and were also tracking some mild and muggy conditions. Look at your dew points right now. Measures how much moisture is in the atmosphere when were above 60, it is humid for us. Lets go hour by hour on future weather by 8 a. M. Any of this moisture is out of here and we are going to see sunshine appear very fast as the morning goes on. And thats going to lead to bright conditions this afternoon and temperatures mainly in the 70s and 80s away from the coast. Lena well, many Business Owners say theyve reached a breaking point with how the city is handling an uptick in crime so much so theyre closing up shop to send a bigger message to city officials. Abc seven News Reporter Gloria Rodriguez joining us live in the newsroom to explain why this is happening now. Good morning, kumasi. City attorney david chu says a judge clarified an injunction which limited the citys response. Chu says the city can clear encampments as long as they first offer shelter to those who are living on the streets. This action is just the latest development in a month long legal battle between the city and homeless advocates. The director of the coalition on homeless, which is suing the city, worries that the increased sweeps could lead to the city violating its own rules on clearing encampments. She pointed to policies prohibiting the destruction of homeless peoples property, which she says can be counter productive. But chu believes that its a step in allowing the city to enforce its own laws. San francisco has really tried to balance providing Compassionate Services and shelter to unhoused individuals with maintaining a healthy and safe streets. But that balance was really upset, particularly as over half of the folks who have received offers of shelter would turn it down. Criminalization in general does not lead to an exit out of homelessness. An end. It, in fact, usually lengthens homelessness and the director says they want real solutions. But the legal battle is far from over. There are more trial dates on the issue set for the months ahead. Reggie gloria, thank you.
