The deal will help the city retain employees but the mayor says it could mean higher taxes for residents. City Council Members approved the tentative agreement in closed session yesterday. Leaders representing members of two unions say they are pleased with the agreement that will give workers a wage increase of up to 15 over three years. The mayor says he supports city workers and that they deserve a raise, but says the city cannot afford such a high raise. He feels they will need to cut tens of millions of dollars in programs in the years ahead. The reality is we are gambling with the Services People rely on, services that take care of children, old folks, to get our homeless neighbors indoors and off the streets. I do not perceive there being any immediate cuts in service. I do not believe that the city has any need to do so, but i think this increase in wages will allow us to provide better and more services in the future because it will take a step towards alleviating the issue we are experiencing. Ultimately, Higher Quality employees and more employees in general are only going to lead to Better Services being offered to the residents. That was her response when she walked out in the intense winds to see where the smoke was coming from. She and her family were all home as the situation worsened. Her husband even spray down the house with the hose. When i was trying to gather more stuff, junior came in the house, and he was getting burned by embers just flying around. The family ran to their car and maneuvered their way out of the area. Because of downed power lines, they were routed towards lahainas front street but chose to go the wrong way on a oneway street to get out. Honestly, i think that saved our lives because you saw it how many cars were stuck on front street. At one moment, i looked back at my daughter, and she had one lone tear streaked down her face , and the reason you could see it was because her face was covered in soot and ash. So that hit me really hard. They were able to get to safety despite the paint on their car burning away. Days later, her husband opened up about his feelings that day. But my husband said that he gave himself to god we were all going to burn the car because he was happy. That for him to have to think that. But that was the reality of it. So many have reached out to susie, who was with her daughter when we spoke with her tuesday, and her entire family. She says they lost nearly everything, but they are alive and grateful as they stay at a friends house. We are very fortunate to be able to have a bed to sleep on. I do not know how many people are still in their cars. Susie tells me she is not sure what will happen next. They are taking it one day at a time, but she just enrolled her fiveyearold in school on the other side of maui. Her kindergarten starts thursday this week.
