Many people waking up this monday morning hoping for updates and see whats happening in the pacific. Those devastating wildfires hours. And thats where were going to begin with harrowing new stories of survival as the death toll on maui climbs to at least 93. 19 year old Noah Tompkins captured this dramatic video after escaping the deadliest wildfire in modern us history with his family and wading in the water for nearly five hours, officials are now urging residents to submit dna samples to help identify the remains of their loved ones. Abcs melissa adan has more. Parts of maui left charred by the catastrophic fires that began on tuesday. The historic city of lahaina reduced to a pile of ash and rubble. Its been so hot. Were very hard. So far, only a small portion of destroyed structures have been searched for human remains. And so were going as fast as we can. But just so you know, 3, thats whats been searched with the dogs, 3. L. A county has sent 12 of their cadaver dogs to help with the search. All of this of course, as families still want to reconnect with their loved ones because were talking about a thousand people still unaccounted for. Joe shillings family says they believe he died. He was hunkered down in an apartment complex that was destroyed in the fire. He would do anything to help anybody, even a stranger among those confirmed killed carol hartley. She was running to escape the flames with her longtime partner , charles. He survived but suffered third degree burns. I cant even go to sleep. Im having dreams of her just on fire in front of me. She had a heart of gold and she cared about other people more than herself. Many survivors say they had no warning. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency confirming none of the islands comprehensive siren system were ever activated. Ive authorized a comprehensive review of what happened in the early hours of the fire, the and the hours thereafter. We will find out what we could have done to prevent such loss of life and as residents begin to pick up the pieces, some believe state officials should create policies to prevent outsiders from grabbing land from lahaina residents whove already lost so much. We dont want to be displaced any more than we already have been. Were all hurt. Were all grieving. You know, a lot of our hearts were here, and its now completely gone. But were still here. We have to keep it that way. Melissa, dan, abc news, maui. Melissa, thank you. Meanwhile, were learning that firefighters battling the blaze in lahaina were faced with hydrants that were running dry. The New York Times is reporting that the towns water system collapsed. Water leaked from melting pipes, depriving the firefighters of the water pressure that they needed to fight the flames. Also, at least 14 firefighters lost their homes in that blaze. Public schools will remain closed in louisville , kentucky, at least through tomorrow as officials try to fix new bus routes blamed for a chaotic first day of school. Some students were not picked up and others got home hours late. The district says free meals will be provided at certain locations while schools are shuttered. The bus routes were revamped to cope with a driver shortage. Ups is sharing its expertise on routes with the district. Well, a small kansas newspaper is at the center of a First Amendment fight after it was raided by police over a story it never published. And the papers 98 year old coowner died. The next day. One of his reporters received about a local Business Owner accused of driving illegally. They decided not to publish the story. We notified the police that they told us this. They never responded. The person who was the target of this then falsely accused the us of illegally obtaining the information. That prompted a search warrant. Though federal laws protect journalists from search and seizures and instead require a subpoena. But the chief of the Marion PoliceDepartment Says in a statement there are exceptions like, quote, when there is reason to believe the journalist is taking part in the underlying wrongdoing, the paper denies any wrongdoing and says it wont be deterred. If they think im going to give up because theyve made it difficult for us to put out a newspaper for one week. Theyve got another thing coming. And in a statement, the Kansas Bureau of investigation says it has joined an investigation into allegations of illegal access and dissemination of confidential criminal justice information. Its alerted rustic ridge drive, brookside drive, get report of multiple people buried under debris of at least one surviving victim. All he is requesting the Fire Department step up. First responders rushing in. Remnants of homes are scattered throughout the area. Cars now charred debris surround ending this childrens playground. I can remember what these houses looked like, like im shaking like i know what they looked like before. And now this. And i just cant believe it. Its unreal. Three residents were hospitalized, one remains in critical condition. 18 Fire Departments responded, 57 firefighters were treated on scene for minor injuries. Youre watching world news now did notw with this air scare, American Airlines says a pressurization issue led to a plane making a terrifying drop in altitude last week. According to flightaware, thursdays flight from charlotte to gainesville, florida, descended nearly 20,000ft in ten minutes, including 50,000, 15,000 in about three minutes. Now, the plane did land safely, safely and abc news has learned that aircraft involved had an excellent safety record. And another scare in the air happened over the weekend in michigan. Incredibly the pilot survived the air show incident, ejecting themselves with just seconds to spare. Heres abcs Derrick Dennis on this morning. The thrill of the thunder over michigan air show taking a dramatic turn. A mig 23 performance plane airborne over belleville, michigan. And then moments later. Trouble, cell phone video shows the two pilots on board ejecting with a mini explosion as the plane went down, crashing into an apartment complex. Parking lot hitting only unoccupied parked cars. He was just flying too low, lost him in the trees and that was it. The plane bursting into flames as it was absolutely crazy to see the explosion on the plane coming by. Ryan jakobowski saw the crash and says the air show crowd was quickly told what went wrong. Yeah, so the announcers came over the air and they were basically explaining what had happened, that the pilots were ejecting out and that there was a crash. A statement from the Wayne County Airport authority overseeing the air show says the pilot and back seater successfully ejected from the aircraft before the crash. While it did not appear they sustained any significant injuries, First Responders transported the pair to a nearby hospital as a precaution. Incredibly, both survived. Im glad that, you know, nobody was injured on the actual field or anywhere else. Airport Authorities Say the pilots declared an emergency just before they ejected from the plane. No word on their conditions. Overnight. The faa and the ntsb will investigate the crash. Amazing. Nobody on the ground was hurt, really, or killed. It could have been so much worse. Were glad those pilots seem to be recovering overnight. A plane crash so close to an Apartment Building in the parking lot only unoccupied cars were hit. All right. And fortunately for a lot of new yorkers, thats where they were when the blackout hit yesterday afternoon. W abcs nj burkett has some of their stories. The first passengers emerged from the tunnels covered in grime and gasping for fresh air while two stories underground. Hundreds of others inched their way along the walls, staggering blindly through the tunnels in total darkness. As the line of passengers stretches for more than 200 yards to the subway tunnel. And here is where the train came to a grinding, screeching halt. Theres no telling how many trains were stranded in the tunnels today, but suffering straphangers numbered in the thousands. This was the scene on the a train in soho. And listen, is there anybody passed out on that train . Some were pregnant. Some were asthmatic, others were elderly riders. In the back of the train swelter for up to two hours before they reached the street. Its just the not knowing, you know, if wed been told it would be two hours and the Fire Department on their way, itd be fine. But it just got hotter and hotter and i didnt know what was happening down in the tunnels. People asked us over and over again what happened because, of course, they were stranded and they had no idea. They were actually relieved to know it was only a blackout.
