Reporter whit, good morning. We know there are at least three wild fires still burning here on maui. You can smell it in the air. And that Historic Town, so beloved, it is just gone this morning. Of course, this is a place, and im struck by this. Its always filled with so much joy, so much aloha. But this morning theres so much sadness over the loss of life. That death toll growing overnight. We now know there are at least 36 people confirmed dead. Oh my god. Reporter this morning a desperate attempt to save anything left behind after that out of control inferno on one of mauis most beloved areas. Lahaina. The wild fires erupting across maui and hawaii tuesday killing at least 36 and burning through 600 acres so far, at least 271 structures damaged or destroyed. It was pitch black. There was so much smoke, it was so heart wrenching. Reporter amanda captain lost her home and both places of work. Most of lahaina is gone. Reporter steve scott telling me hes still searching for his wife after the two got separated. Im trying to find my wife. I know shes safe. I think shes safe. But i havent found her yet. Reporter survivors detailing the apocalyptic scene. There were just guys riding around on bicycles and mopeds just screaming, you gotta go, the fires coming. Reporter claire kent said she and her friends rushed to grab essentials and evacuate amid the chaos. We were dodging branches and things flying through the air. Literally a wall of smoke. I could see actual flame, actual fire. Reporter while she made it out safely, her home town was decimated. To escape the flames, more than a dozen people lumping into the ocean. We recovered 14 people so far from the water primarily its been focused in a search and rescue posture at this time. Reporter aerials showing the extent of the damage. Rows of incinerated homes. Authorities saying 911 service is down in some areas, hampering rescue efforts. The completely uncontained fire destroyed historic Cultural Land marks across the bustling town, home to 12,000 people. The u. S. Military stepping in to help, working to supress the fire while getting tourists off the island. The drive normally takes 45 minutes. Took us two or three hours to get here. Reporter would be travellers now discouraged from visiting the popular vacation deaf nation. And this here behind me, this is actually the road to lahaina. It is still closed off. Theres only one way in, one way out, just this road. Thats what made evacuation efforts so, so different here in this area. We also again talked about the three wild fires that are still burning in maui. You can see it. It is still windy here. The hope is that those winds die down just enough for search and rescue efforts to be helped out. They need that. It is uncontained right now, those fires. Theres a worry about what that means for residents here on the island. Whit, i know you and i, we both adore hawaii. I was here on vacation. This is where i was when this whole thing broke out. It is really hard to imagine a town of maui without lahaina town. That is how beloved it is here. You know how strong hawaiians are. Even they are saying maui will never be the same. Absolutely. My familys from ohio. I have family there. I have been to lahaina dozens of times. That tree in the middle treasured by locals and tourists alike. Gio benitez, we appreciate it. For the latest on the rescue efforts i smoke with adam winetrof just moments ago. Adam, thank you for joining us and speaking with us during this very difficult time. We know federal resources are beginning to arrive there in hawaii, but whats the state of the search and rescue efforts right now . Its been a complicated day, as the wind is contained. We only, in the last few hours, saw that the red flag warning was withdrawn. That should give firefighters on the ground a little bit more leverage, as far as getting control of the fire. Well be able to put helicopters back up in the air. We heard awful eyewitness accounts. We know the death toll is rising into the dozens. How worried are you that that number could go even higher . Well, weve got a fairly large burned area that the search and rescue teams still need to explore and see whether theres any survivors in those areas. We do fear that there may be additional casualties. Were hopeful that this is everyone that we found them all so far, but these were large and fast moving fires and its only recently that weve started to get our arms around them and contain them. Were hoping for the best but prepared for the worst. How would you characterize the scale and scope of the devastation there . These fires took place in wildly separated areas. They were driven by very chaotic winds that reaches gusts of up to 80 miles an hour. In some areas it was just wild fire and brush that burned. In other areas it was right in the heart of town. Lahaina has been some of the most shocking footage. I have been telling some folks some of the photos we saw reminded me of world war ii after the fire bombings. There are hundreds of structures damaged or destroyed. Obviously, we have the updated death toll announced just this evening. Certainly for the folks in the community of lahaina and anybody who loves that town, this has been shocking. I was there on the big island a few years ago for the volcanic eruption. Youve had hurricanes, floods, but have you personally ever experienced anything like this in the Hawaiian Islands . There have been some very large wild fires in recent years. We did have a record setting wild fire on the big island in 2020 but speaking from my own experience, the behavior of these fires and the way that they raced ahead of Fire Fighting containment efforts reminded me more of some of the things we see in the u. S. West coast. Difference is that in some of those fires in the western United States, youve got a lot of territory with a long road ahead of you so when people need to get out, there are ways to do that. We are a small set of islands. There are not a lot of escape routes. We did see some significant complications, both in the lack of access to some of these areas and also in the breakdowns of communication technology. For people who arent familiar with the Historic Town of lahaina, can you explain the importance to the community, not just for the locals, but the tourists and do you have a sense of whats left standing there . We understand that a significant portion of the structures in the city have been damaged or destroyed. Some of the photographs will show that. There are Historic Structures there. The water front is a very popular tourist attraction and its got some history to it. I think anybody who knows the town and has visited and sees what some of the images that we are seeing out of that community now, its probably a little shocking to them. I know its being felt throughout the community here. I have family in hawaii myself. I have been to lahaina many times. Our hearts go out to all the people impacted by these devastating fires. This has turned into a travel nightmare after authorities told everybody, if they dont have to be here, they should get out. So many people rushed to this airport, only to find out their flights had been cancelled, leaving them camping out here. Families sleeping on the ground, kids sleeping on the ground here. We have seen so many people along the hallways of this airport overnight. Theyre not sure what to do. We just spoke with one family who told us their airline told them the fastest they can get a plane is saturday. Thats extremely problematic because the hotels are either evacuated or sold out, and the shelters here are totally packed. This is not just an issue thats impacting hawaii. On the main land, passengers have been demanding to be left off of flights that are coming to hawaii. I was on a flight yesterday from los angeles to maui. So many families were demanding to be let off the flight. One mother had tears in her eyes. She said she was planning the trip of a life time. She dragged her family off that flight saying that was devastating but nothing compared to all the people who lost everything here. And our heart goes out to them. Eva . Will carr at the airport in maui, thank you. Now to new details about the utah man killed by fbi agents as they tried to arrest him for threatening to assassinate President Biden. Mola lenghi has details. Reporter just hours before President Biden touched down in utah, the fbi says its agents killed a man who was threatening his life. Two fbi officials tell abc news that 75yearold Craig Robertson was fatally shot as agents tried to arrest him for threatening to assassinate the president and threatening other government officials. The federal complaint showing screen shots of multiple disturbing social media posts allegedly authored by robertson. One posted just four days ago that says, i hear biden is coming to utah. Fbi officials claim robertson appeared to possess numerous firearms in addition to what appears to be a long range sniper rifle. The fbi investigation into robertson, which began back in april, also detailed threats he allegedly made against Law Enforcement and other Public Officials including Vice President harris, attorney general garland and gavin newsom. One official telling abc news that the threats were deemed credible and the incident is now under review by the fbis inspection division. One official tells abc news that this appears to have been more than just an idle threat. That robertson was making plans to take physical action when the fbi intervened. Mola, thank you. Now to new Health Concerns for diane feinstein. The 90yearold was briefly hospitalized after falling in her home. Senior Congressional Correspondent rachel scott joins us with the latest. Senate, and this morning sources say she is recovering after tripping and falling over a chair in San Francisco on tuesday. Her office describing this as only a minor fall, saying that she was briefly hospitalized and released once all of her scans were clear. This is just the latest health scare. She spent three months from capitol hill recovering from shingles. Last month she appeared confused during a committee meeting. She was forced to rely heavily on her staff when it came time to cast her vote. This is not the only i. N. S. Den thats raising concerns about the health and the age of u. S. Senators. 81yearold Senate Minority leader Mitch Mcconnell suffered an episode, freezing at the microphone during a press conference. His office said that he was light headed. This is the oldest senate in over 100 year. There are no age restrictions or term limits. Even though feinstein is not running for reelection, some lawmakers are saying that all needs to be reconsidered. That conversation playing out on both sides of the island. You are there in iowa. The governments Consumer Price index increased 3. 2 in july compared to a year ago. Thats a big improvement from that more than 8 rate at this time last year. Aaa said the National Average is up about 0. 30 in the last month fueled by opec supply cuts and slower oil refining because of extreme heat. This morning abc news learning exclusive new details about new the nurse and her young daughter made it back to loved ones alive after they were kidnapped by armed gang members on july 27th. We welcomed the report of their release. Reporter her family and friends spent two weeks hearing little, hoping for the best. Then wednesday morning the Christian Aid Ministry where she worked said it was with immense joy that we confirm the safe release of alex and her child. Im blessed to know so many amazing patients. Reporter seen here talk about her ministry, she was kidnapped while working. A haitian Law Enforcement source saying after the kidnapping, dorsenvilles phone was used to call her husband. The cell phone pinging to this general area, not far from where she was taken, territory controlled by one of haitis most dangerous gangs. The kidnappers then demanding a significant ransom for their release. Tense negotiations followed. Then the gang freeing them. Dorsainvils experience not uncommon. Soaring Gang Violence has spared no one. This is damage from a stray bullet. Yes, that came in from the street. Reporter unicef reporting roughly 300 women and children have been kidnapped so far this year. The least protected people there are usually the humanitarian ngos. New Police Video Shows the moment a swat team raided a home near las vegas just miles from where the rapper was gunned down almost 27 years ago. Kayna whitworth has the details. Good morning, kayna. Reporter eva, good morning. This video is almost 13 hours long. It shows a perspective of officers as they raided the home of dwayne davis. In the video you can see him and a woman walking down the drive way as the investigation into tupacs murder has reignited. Get down, sir. Reporter this morning abc news obtaining exclusive video of the moment a las vegas swat team descended on the home of dwayne davis in relation to the unsolved murder of tupac shakur. The Las Vegas Police department. We have a search warrant for the residence. You need to come out with your hands up and hands empty. Reporter around 10 p. M. , several Armored Vehicles pulled into the suburban henderson, nevada, neighborhood. Open up that door. Walk back to the sound of my voice. Reporter police order davis out of the home. Swat teams quickly move in. Following the search warrant, Police Seized electronics, phones, four lap tops, four tablets and two black tubs containing photographs and other items they believe could tie davis to the murder. Abc news learning investigators also retrieved ammunition, testing the bullets that did not match the shell casings from the 1996 crime scene. They also took a copy of davis autobiography which detailed tupacs murder. They were waiting at a red light near the las vegas strip. Davis claimed to be one of only two living eyewitnesss telling the documentary series death row chronicles he was in the car with the shooter. Said the shots came from the back. Who shot tupac . It came from the streets. It came from the back seat. Reporter the only other witness is sug knight who was driving with him. The former founder of Death Row Records currently serving a 28 year jail sentence for a fatal hit and run. If you knew who killed tupac, would you tell the police . Absolutely not. I dont get paid to solve homicides. Reporter authorities have long believed that the actual shooter is already dead. So this investigation will be looking into Something Like an accomplice. Yeah, that search and rescue effort still very much under way here in lahaina which is just at the end of this road here. We know that three wild fires are still burning here on the island, and crews are desperately trying to contain those right now. This morning a state of emergency as deadly wild fires spread across maui. The massive fires with thick smoke and flames killing at least 36 and burning through 600 acres. At least 271 structures damaged or destroyed. More than a dozen people jumping into the ocean at lahaina harbor. Aerials showing the extent of the damage, rows of incinerated homes. 911 service is down in some areas, hampering rescue efforts. The completely uncontained fire destroying historic Cultural Land marks across the bustling town, home to 12,000 people. Earlier this morning, whit smoke with adam from hawaii emergency management. Weve got a fairly large burned area that the search and rescue team still needs to explore and see whether theres any survivors in those areas. We do fear that there may be additional casualty. Reporter steve scott telling me hes still searching for his wife after the two got separated. Im trying to find my wife. I know shes safe. I think shes safe. But i havent found her yet. Reporter survivors detailing the apocalyptic scene. There were just guys riding around on bikes and mopeds just screaming, you gotta go, you gotta go, the fire is coming. Reporter claire kent said she and her friends rushed to grab essentials and evacuate amid the chaos. We were dodging branches and just things flying through the air. Literally a wall of black smoke. I could see actual flames, like actual fire. Reporter the u. S. Military stepping in to help, working to supress the fire while getting tourists off the island. The drive on takes 45 minutes. Took us over three hours to get here. Reporter would be travellers now discouraged visiting the popular vacation destination. And of course, the hope here is that death toll of 36 doesnt keep climbing. So they are working very hard on that. Were also hoping these winds start dying down so that they can fight those current fires that are still under way right now. Those are not contained. So they want to prevent and hopefully limit how fast and how far they reach other people. I just saw a guy sleeping inside oven an xray machine. You have kids sleeping on the floors here. This is problematic because hotels have been evacuated or have been sold out. The shelters are just jam packed. Some have flights but others are telling us they cant get out at least until this weekend. One mom told me she has a flight for later today. The big problem for them, their belongings are still inside the evacuation area. They had to race out. Her husband is going to stay here and try to get back and get their things but she is getting herself and her family off. United has cancelled all incoming flights today. Theyre sending empty planes to the airport to try to help with the situation. The families we have spoken with say those planes cant get here fast enough. Rebecca . Aaa said the National Average is up about 0. 30 in the last month fueled by opec supply cuts and the extreme heat weve been seeing. Lets talk about the smashburger tacos. Mike, how do we get started . Were going to start with our all beef patty. Were going to get a nice tortilla. Get a nice tortilla center it over the wall. Nicely centered. Get our press out. Well put a nice firm press over the center. Want to get as close to the edges as possible. Put some muscle into that. Hes got more than you think. Then were gonna let that cook. What happens after the crispy sear . You flip it . Flip that patty. Add some cheese to it. Let the cheese melt, then start dressing it. Lets move on to the toppings. How do we do that . Finished product here. Were going to move over to the plate. For this recipe, want to do it a little different. We got a house made mac n cheese. We got a burger, taco and mac and cheese. Mac and cheese is the topping. This is sharp cheddar and its hand grated. The chef grates it. With the sharp cheddar then adds mild cheddar. You can make it how you choose to make it, but you want a really good flavor balance. We also have american cheese on there. The sharp mixed with the mild mixed with the american makes a great cheese burger. We got some taste testers going to work. Before we get their take, were going to eva while shes got a full mouth and ask her question. Tell us about the special sauce here, too. We got our special sauce. Its a ketchup mayo blend. We have some chopped pickles in it. Its a great sauce that can go on any dish. Mainly burgers, but you can put on a taco or hot dog. Can i help you . Of course. Do you want to put some sauce on . Im a sauce guy. Im a sauce guy. Is there a limit . There we go. Sauce it up. All right. Were going to finish off with the bread crumbs. Salty. Nice texture, contrast. Then chopped bacon.
