They have used cranes to pull the debris pile apart. Reporter the cause of the blaze is still unknown but under investigation. No injuries have been reported. The smoke clearing out Jack London Square where the only people around where those who had just gotten off the ferry. Looks very scary. I hope they will turn it out soon. Reporter a worker for the ferry says many on board were shocked. We started passing out masks to protect them as much as we could. Reporter Alameda County has issued an air quality alert and is urging people to stay inside and close windows. Potential health impacts, the biggest worry for everyone we talked to. Ama its clear from locals and anyone who has visited that this is unlike anything the area has ever seen. We are awaitint update. Hawaiis governor says hundreds ofies ve been displaced. More than 270 buildings have been damaged or destroyed. Terrified families fleeing flames and smoke filled streets. Homes all around burning to the ground. Six fires erupted on the islands of maui and hawaii, destroying homes and businesses, forcing evacuations, at least a dozen people jumping into the ocean to get away. Lahaina is on fire. Reporter apocalyptic scenes in that popular tourist town, home to 12,000 people. Steve scott desperately trying to fight back the flames. You were essentially trapped in the middle of the fire. Right. I was with a hose, shooting it up, trying to protect her building. Plantation house, all of that blew up. Reporter getting separated from his wife. I know my wife is safe. I think she is safe. I havent found her yet. Reporter you can see the powerful wind right now. You can see that dry terrain that created the perfect storm for a fire this devastating. Reporter tonight, i have been in contact with those in maui. Some of whom are visiting from San Francisco. The hotels were already busy and now they are packed with visitors and residents who lost everything. Im told there was a three hour wait this evening to get food at one of the major hotels. This is downtown front street. Hard to put into words. Reporter heartbreaking images coming from allies lineup. Everybody we know lost their homes. Every apartment. We dont know anyone yet who kept their homes. Reporter james and tennille sent us this video showing the damage in lahaina, burnedout cards left cars left in the street. Exactly like a war zone. People, dead people in the streets. Dead animals in the streets. Cars abandoned. Everything burned. Looks like it got bombed. It really does. Reporter you saw bodies in the street . Yes. Oh my god. Reporter one person who did make it out is former San Francisco resident marjorie st. Clair who drove through flames etafety. I thought, im not going to sit here in this parking lot die in a car because i cant breathe. You know, i will just go for it. Reporter others sent us these pictures of what it looked like from their vantage point. Garrett tom of San Francisco, on vacation in maui, spoke to us on the phone as he stood in the ocean to get a signal. At the same time, you are ok. Your family is ok. Thats what we are thankful for. Some people lost their homes. Reporter so many in this area still in a bit of shock over the extent of the damage. We had no warning. There was barely even an announcement. The next thing we know, the wind is gusting up to 67 Miles Per Hour. Fires popping everywhere. Reporter you heard from the brueggemans. They run a company that makes tiny houses in maui. Since so many homes were lost, they were lurking they are working with officials to see if their company can help. Even if you want to leave tonight, you cant because many of the roads are closed. J. R. Stone, abc7news. Dan unusually strong winds and extreme dry conditions have been fueling these wildfires periods wildfire. A dangerous mix to spark these devastating fires. Wind reached up to 60 Miles Per Hour tuesday night. The past several decades, agriculture declined. This is across the state. These spaces filling with tons of fuel and grassy fuels are highly sensitive to quick drying out. Really easy to ignite. Hotter conditions, more variable rainfall. Can you walk us through how this got so out of control so quickly and what the situation is liking looking like now . Sandhya the wind has dropped off considerably. They were ferocious. Theres a hurricane, category four, to the southwest of hawaii. Strong highpressure to the north. Wind funneling white between the two. Right between the two. The wind came off the mountain, blowing down towards the ocean, very windy, dry conditions. Wind has dropped off. Gusting to 25 right now on one of the islands. Anywhere from 45 to 60 miles hour. Honolulu county reported 82 Miles Per Hour. Theres a wind advisory for the island chain. Red flag warning still going. They are not out of the woods just yet. Drought situation added to what happened. Theyve been in a drought and so that obviously didnt help out. That hurricane is going to move away from the islands so we are expecting the wind to continue to drop off. Ama travel to maui is being discouraged because of the wildfires. If you have a trip planned, rethink it. For some people, the issue is getting there. The chaos of trying to get out and getting home. The wildfires have created a mad scramble for travelers trying to get off the island. Wednesday at sfo, we caught up with some people who got out just in time. We were in a hotel. We were seeing the fire come up over the hill. Woke up, saw the hill on fire and left for the airport immediately. Reporter another family feeling fortunate after they planned to go camping on the island. They left a lot of their belongings at her home. Now they have just one suitcase they salvaged and their supplies for that camping trip that never happened. The town has been detroit. We lost everything that we werent using to camp. We got on the last flight out of there. Surreal to be worked walking home with the clothes i wore yesterday. Reporter they saw one of the fires right after it started and recounted how interrupted in just a matter of minutes. We saw one of the brush fires start. We saw it grow from the size of a bush to the size of multiple football fields with flames 30 feet high. Reporter for some travelers, the wildfires arent stopping them from making the trip. Jessica hopkins is one of them. She driven had driven down to san jose to take a direct flight. They got diverted but sent us this update wednesday night. We did make it to maui. We are here. We are grateful. Our hearts go out to everybody on the island. We will make the most of the trip. Reporter i travel expert has this advice for anyone who has a trip booked for maui in the coming days. Things wont get back to normal in the next week or two. Police investigating after a number of people found dead inside a home in danville. They say they were call out earlier this evening to a house on lark would circle. Lauren martinez was there and spoke with neighbors. Reporter a lot of questions from nearby neighbors on what exactly happened at this home off lark would circle. Contra costa county Sheriffs Office said they are investigating a possible murder suicide. The call came in around 5 30. Dispatch audio indicates it was a welfare check at her home. Several officers were on scene taping off the residence. We spoke to a tong longtime neighbor who said he is processing Something Like this happening so close to home. This is shocking to the neighborhood. I have kids here. Have lived here 20, 16 years. As far as processing, you cant. I dont think we even had anything as far as murder.
