Shut down by Public Health officials following two deaths both linked to legionnaires disease. Unfortunately two individuals have died. The third of survived. Contra costa supervisor says the third man tested positive in june but the other two died this week after visiting the spa just days before. County Health Officials are trying to track down others who visited the spot as well. We are trying to sec things like credit card receipts and appointment books to get in touch with people. The bacteria is found in water like lakes and streams but Health Concerns arise when this spreads in human made Water Systems like hot tubs or swimming pools. The way you get this bacteria is because it lives in water droplets, especially in situations where there might be pooling of water. It allows the bacteria to grow and when that water is aerosolized it can be inhaled. That is what happened in here. A closed room with water that was vaporizing. There was a little waterfall that comes out of the hot tub so there was a lot of steam in the room. That is why the risk here was so great. Public Health Officials emphasize this disease is treatable, the incubation. Period following exposure is typically two to 14 days and that is why they are asking anyone who visited this spot over the last two weeks to get tested. We are also working with a facility to collect samples to test those to see if it has the same strain of bacteria that infected those that were here. We should have preliminary results next week. Supervisor joy it says spot may have been operating illegally by not having a business permit or permit for a hot tub. Whether there was criminal negligence is up for the District Attorney but this is the kind of manner we would ask rda to look at.
