In the east bay, a Nonprofit Group in martinez is gearing up for tomorrows National Night out, the annual event to build bridges between the community and police. Night out not only promotes community groups, but also helps fund them. Abc seven News Reporter j. R stone has the story of one such group that teaches kid life skills in the ring. This is this is ho whoa ho. 15 year old Quinton Wadsworth and his brother john. Yeah theyre boxers. And dont put me in the ring with them. But theyre also prime examples of kids working at something theyre passionate about. But even if it dont have the best days, you you learn something from it. In that same spot when you come back. They run the Feet First Foundation and theyll be teaming up with police and other organizations for National Night out tuesday in martinez, letting people know about their non contact boxing program that is in several junior highs and high schools across the bay area and will soon be expanding to southern california. Were trying to get these kids to find out what their passion about it. Were not teaching them to be boxers. Were teaching them to be boxers in life. Were Building Confidence and ability to focus. And i think maybe the most important thing is were engaging them back in school again. Youd think a punch would be the first thing that they show the kids. Not the case, though. Its actually the footwork that theyd have in the ring going forward, sliding that back foot and then going backwards, sliding that front foot. And then the combination of the two punch has come later. There it is. But lets pause here for a minute, because before the physical stuff happens, its a mental game at a time when many kids are having their own battles, especially with the two year run with covid. They disengaged and its not that easy to get engaged again. And thats what really what weve done. But we really started talking to about in a circle time about you know, where their lifes going, what do they want to do after school, you know, what kind of challenges theyre facing because were going to do is were going to work through those challenges is in this class. The program happens during a period of the school day where some kids who may be struggling in part of their life, but anyone can join in. And if you think its all boys, think again. In some academies its half and half. Wow. And the girls seem to learn it quicker than the boys. Dont tell them that. That throws better punches. I throw them faster. I say he throws it faster, but i throw it harder. Dont worry though, because while the boxing wadsworth brothers are competing on the feet First Program does not involve any fighting, just the physical and mental training that comes with it along with that special feeling of accomplishing important nice in martinez jr stone abc7 news. Abc7 news weather anchor Spencer Christian is here now and tells us its similar to a major outbreak last year. Spencer it is indeed. Im of the algae was the first it was first spotted near the Berkeley Marina and now an alert is going out to those who frequent the bay waters yeah just this this reddish wash across the water here for John Rosenfield of the Environmental Group sf bay keeper, its a bit like deja vu all over again, scanning the waters of the Berkeley Marina for the same algae species that devastated thousands of fish around San Francisco bay last summer. These aerial photos show the reddish hue known as red tide, which was spotted over the weekend. Baykeeper got a call to our pollution hotline on thursday that reported dark brown colored water in the Berkeley Marina. We went out and investigated and found that that water that discolored water extended from emeryville all all the way up to albany. Later this afternoon, state officials confirmed that the algae is heterosigma akashiwo, possibly a remnant from last years outbreak. While advising people to avoid entering water. Thats clearly discolored. The algae is not known to present a risk to humans. Reassure during the concerned swimmers who were taking advantage of a calm day at the Berkeley Marina. Im a triathlete, so its better for me to practice in the open water than it is in the regular pool. You know, im concerned about that. And i love being in the water. I love the bay and when i notice biking over here this morning, the water did look a little red. The algae is also known to thrive off nitrogen. A nutrient released by local Wastewater Treatment plants. State Officials Say they are working with those Treatment Plants to try to reduce the load, but for now, theyll be monitoring shoreline areas to track any spread and therell be more information to come as theres a field study planned for wednesday. And Officials Say theyre also using Satellite Technology to help track the algae bloom. Now, lets talk about our weather.
