Now to a warning thats never been more important. Listen up. Rule number three, keep track of shipping times and distances. An 81yearold concord man discovered his favorite donut store could face closure due to covid19. He surprised the staff with a generous gift. Now hes known as the sweetest customer in town. I started looking for a place to go for my morning coffee, and then i found this. The kids were so friendly. Wanted to do things for you. I just started coming here on a regular basis. Its more than donuts and coffee. Its a place that we connect with people. I mean, we have thousands of customers. And all the sudden the shutdown came. I was worried that maybe they were he was going to lose business or have to shut down. It was in march the shelter in place orders went out, grandpa would come through the drivethrough every day in his car and one day he came by and said, matt, i have something for your crew. I put 280 in an envelope and come down and said 20 a piece wont change your life but i just wanted you to know i appreciate what they do and i wanted to help out a little bit. It took my breath away. I didnt know how to react. It was nothing id ever experienced before, the kindness, generosity, the love. We all thought, look, this guy will never pay for anything ever again at dunkin, period. I insisted on paying and they insisted on not taking my pay. Theyd try to trick him and hed trick them back. Sometimes hed go back a second time to make sure hed paid enough or throw them a trip. It was like a mini revolution. Matt put a poster board up if you take any money from grandpa, if you let him pay, youre immediately terminated. Obviously it was a joke, but it became this contest between grandpa and all of us where he would try to pay and we said, no, we dont want your money. Wed come up with different games, the car in front of you paid for you, he figured that one out pretty quickly. Id give them a 20 and theyd make change out of the 20, ones and coins and hand it back to me and i got home, counted, still 20. Just like this pafrt back and forth, its been really entertaining. Sometimes i threw a 20 inside the window and drive off. Takes his money and throws it in the window and speeds off now hell give us money and say its not to pay for my food its to give a type to all of your crew members and, you know, we cant say no to that. So hes kind of figured out a little bit of work around. Were trying to figure out how we can get him back for that. I believe in the old adage if you really want to see the best of people, be nice to them. Its something you dont expect when you get into this business is all the relationships that are going to develop out of this. So his granddaughter in South Carolina called up the store here and talked to one of our managers, norma, and said, hey, grandpas birthday is coming up. They had balloons, they had gifts, a great big basket of gifts. They walked away from the station and come out in the parking lot and sang happy birthday to me and had a party. It was wonderful. They were so warm. Customers come in, we have a great conversation. We get to know some really incredible people like grandma and grandpa. Its so much more than donuts and coffee, its a community, its a family. When you pull up to the order place and say grandpas here and i hear the kids in the background, its grandpa, thats a great way to start the day. And you can watch more stories like this on localish. Com and all the localish social media pages. Making me hungry, lisa. That was cute, all right, good morning, everyone, look at the sun here, the fog deck eroding in our east bay but not everywhere, its cool, upper 40s to near 50 in the Livermore Valley but we should see 60s, plenty of sun over the weekend, for most, and more rain will be returning for the week ahead, my forecast is coming up. Thanks, lisa. It has been a whacky week for cal and the pac 12, game on. Game off, game back on again. But against a different opponent in a different location. All right, heres a live look from pier 39, see the sea lions hanging out, enjoying the crisp cool weather this morning, boat going by, its 51 degrees right now in San Francisco. Pretty clear day. Lets talk sports now. Two College Football games will be played in the south bay today at 12 30, stanford battles colorado down on the farm, watch the game on our Sister Network espn. And tonight san jose takes on unlv at cefcu stadium, kickoff at 7 30. The california golden bears were supposed to finally play their first game today but there has been a change in plans. Abc 7 sports director larry beil has the details in this mornings sports. Good morning, everybody, cal spent all week prepping for a game at Arizona State. Instead theyre playing ucla at the rose bowl sunday morning. What a wild week in the pac12 because of covid. Youll recall, cal had their Season Opener called off because of a positive covid test. They found out Arizona State has a bunch of positives, including their head coach herm edwards. That game is off. Meanwhile, utah cant play ucla, the utes have an outbreak. The pac12 decided lets have the two healthy teams play, its cal versus ucla, kickoff sunday, 9 00 a. M. Meanwhile, the pac12 apologizing to stanford for forcing quarterback davis mills to sit out last week at oregon. The cardinal lost that game, four players sat out because of a positive covid test believed to be the qb mills, turns out it was a false positive. He could have played all along. Stanford is hosting colorado today, the cardinal will have mills at qb. The Miami Marlins made history, theyve hired kim ng as their new general manager, why is that a big deal . She becomes the first female gm and the first asianamerican gm in the sport. Ngs been in baseball for more than two decade, very highly regarded, previously worked as assista gm for yankees and dodgers. The warriors have unveiled an ambitious plan to get fans back into chase center next season, it involves rapid covid testing on site with the team picking up the 30 million cost, this plan known as operation dub nation would have to be approved by local Health Officials but the club has been working on this proposal since the pandemic started. As luck would have it joe lakep has his masters degree in epidemiology. So he became immersed in the science early on. And the plan we have is different in one fundamental way from all the other partial stadium or arena openings youve seen around the world and thats that were adding the element of testing. Hopefully it works, and other teams and other leagues can use the warriors blueprint as a model to go forward. Thats a wrap on morning sports, have a great weekend, everybody, im larry beil. All right, another check of the weather with lisa argen. Felt like winter yesterday. So windy and the rain generous in parts of the bay area, not everywhere, though, we have another opportunity, slightly stronger system arriving on tuesday. Heres a look at live doppler 7, you can see the fog in the east bay to the south bay and also still lingering up in the north bay but a good deal of sunshine here in parts of marin county and parts of the east bay clearing out. As we look at our visible picture, this shows the moisture content in the atmosphere. We have High Pressure building offshore. The storm track to the north, it allowed for a string of sunny and milder days, a fall view here from san jose with the trees changing color, and the low clouds here, it is 49 in san jose, 48 in Mountain View, 51 in san jose, the clouds are just kind of sitting, 49 in gilroy, 54 in Half Moon Bay and this nice beach in santa cruz, near 50 and looking at numbers in the 60s today with some lighter winds so a Beautiful Day, if you wrap up a little bit at the coast, the winds should be on the light side, but there are out of the north and northeast right now, and looking for a west wind, now, this southerly wind, its all going to help us up as warm us up as we get through monday, 45 in napa, 43 in novato, chilly in the north bay with 52 in concord, visibility is still reduced to nothing, in napa, four miles in hayward, three miles in san jose. So looking at our 24hour temperature change, with the cooler numbers up north, but check out san rafael. Looking very pretty right now with sunshine. The fog is eroding, its lifting, out of here in the next hour and then were looking for a slight warming trend today, most of us in the 60s, then 70s arriving for some of you tomorrow into monday rain returning on tuesday, lingers into wednesday, theres the fog and not much left of it in the next hour. And then were looking at a sunny day, a few cumulus clouds, this is your sunday, increasing clouds in the north bay, that front gets hung up, up in sonoma, and napa, maybe astringle and youll notice the high clouds, perhaps north of the golden gate, otherwise weve got the dry and slightly warmer conditions, before we get to this on tuesday, the next rain which will once again focus heavier amounts in the north bay, but it looks a little bit stronger so that we should see more healthy amounts in the east bay and south bay, hopefully a quarter of an inch for you and snow levels coming down to lake level, lingers into your wednesday, after that were dry and looking at a sunny second half of the workweek. So highs today underneath all that sun will be in the 60s, the rain fall we can look forward to anywhere from perhaps a half inch of rain, upwards of more than that to the north bay, the tuesday, wednesday system with upper 50s today, cool at the coast and looking at 63 for you in santa rosa and san jose today. It will be a nice mild day after the clouds, wind and rain yesterday, the accuweather sevenday forecast, a little bit warmer with perhaps some sprinkles in the north bay sunday, the warming continues on monday, our level one system tuesday and wednesday. So we need to bring in more rain, obviously, but a little more on the way for your day on tuesday. And wednesday. Liz . Lisa, thank you. California phones is a program provided by the California Public utilities commission. California phones provides free specialized home phones and specialized accessories for your mobile phone to all qualified californians. To get a california phone, you must live in california, have telephone service, either a landline or cellular, and complete an application with a signature from a certifying agent, which now includes nurse practitioners. To get a california phone, just call 18003305100, and ask them to mail or email you an application, or you can download an application from our website at californiaphones. Org. The devices help people with trouble hearing, seeing, speaking, moving, or remembering. They have louder incoming and outgoing sound, loud ringtones, a light that flashes when the phone rings, big buttons for easier dialing, some have memory dialing, some are wireless, and we have bluetooth accessories to make using your cellphone easier. California phones has a variety of equipment to make using your cellphone easier. These include devices that amplify and clarify sound as well as devices that allow handsfree use of your cellphone. Most of these connect through bluetooth, but some plug directly into your cellphone if you dont have bluetooth. Staff is available to serve you by phone or in person. If you cannot come to us, phone assessments are available, and then the selected equipment can be shipped to you. Presentations about our program and how to get connected are also available through virtual presentations and networking. The program is free. There is no age, income, or insurance requirement to apply, and you pay nothing to receive a phone that can help you hear better or see the buttons better and stay in touch with your friends and loved ones. The Program Began in 1979, originally serving the deaf community. As the years went on, we added other groups, so we incorporated anyone who is hard of hearing, low vision, has speech mobility or memory difficulties. So we have been around for over 40 years, and our funding comes from a small surcharge on all of our phone bills. So if you have phone service, you are contributing to this program. Many of us, we may not have difficulties right now. As we get older, thats when the difficulties begin. Also, we all know someone that is having some kind of difficulty on the phone, whether its a neighbor, a family member, a grandparent. And when we begin to struggle on the phone, we begin to isolate ourselves from others. And thats the part that we want to avoid. Ive been with the program for about 12 years, and it is the most rewarding and satisfying job ive had. Youre helping people. You continually run into customers that say, this phone helped me so much, or, my mom had this phone before she passed away, and it helped her so much. You made such a big difference. So, i love what i do, and i love how it helps other people. For more information about the program, you can call 18003305100, or go to californiaphones. Org.
