Dark winter warning. President elect joe biden charging ahead, promising bold action against the pandemic. We can save tens of thousands of lives if everyone would just wear a mask. Urging americans to do their part with 71 days until hes sworn in. President trump refusing to concede and overnight, attorney general william barr adds fuel to the president s false claims by giving Prosecutors Authority to investigate claims of voter fraud. The race to stock up. As americans brace for the next covid wave, the grocery chains already limiting purchases and the items in high demand right now. Emotional tribute. Jeopardys touching farewell to alex trebek and the new details about his final days spent with his family as his fans turn their grief into action. And double trouble in the ballroom. The dancing competition tougher than ever from that bachelorette boost to that backstreet boot. Were hearing from the eliminated couple only on gma. And we do say good morning, america. We appreciate you starting your Tuesday Morning with us and, again, a lot of news to get to. We do, starting with the coronavirus crisis. New details on that promising vaccine trial coming as cases surge soaring in every state now, 10 million total with more than 59,000 hospitalized, the highest since late july. More than 118,000 new u. S. Cases reported on monday. The sixth consecutive day weve been above the 100,000 mark. Matt gutman begins our coverage in hardhit el paso, texas. Good morning, matt. Reporter good morning, michael. Just how hard hit el paso is. The covid rate here has soared by over 1,000 . Every hospital in the county is at or over capacity. To deal with the increase in deaths, the state has shipped in ten morgue trucks. This morning, the u. S. Surpassing a staggering 10 million covid19 infections. The highest number reported cases in any nation. In the past week, roughly 74 americans were diagnosed every minute. And every state is reporting an increase in cases, mayor bill de blasio with a stern warning to new york city residents. So we have one last chance to stop a second wave. Reporter that second wave already crashing over some parts of the country. In el paso, texas, hospitals are so full the state shipped in med surge tents and in recent days, county officials have added a tenth mobile morgue to help keep up with the climbing death rate. Youve got saturated hospitals. Youve got a potential of ten morgues in your community. The trajectory does not look good at all and that to me is extremely scary. Reporter for some help could be on the way with the fda authorizing use of another antibody treatment administered to patients with milder cases. In utah, overcrowding in intensive care units forcing the governor there to declare a new state of emergency. I am placing the entire state of utah under a mask mandate until further notice. Reporter in indiana, where hospitalizations are spiking also, state officials calling for retired Health Care Workers to help with staffing. And when we spoke to the county judge overnight, he called this a perfect storm we have covid, were entering flu season and people are about to gather for the thanksgiving holiday and while the antibody treatment and the vaccine are major breakthroughs, theres concern from Infectious Disease experts that they wont arrive quickly enough to have a Significant Impact on this second wave. Robin. That is much of the concern, matt. There are new details on the pfizer vaccine. The results of the trial promising but there could be challenges getting the treatment out to the public. Steve osunsami joins us now from atlanta with more on that for us. Good morning, steve. Reporter good morning to you, robin. Pfizer says it has a stockpile of this medicine ready to go as soon as the government says its okay. In the race this morning to help heal the world, Drugmaker Pfizer and a german partner appear to be leading, saying that the early results show that their new Coronavirus Vaccine could be as good as 90 effective. Financial markets around the world went soaring after the good word. As a vaccine, its more than 90 effective which is extraordinary and will play a major role in what the outcome of this is going to be. Reporter pfizer is now planning to ask for fda emergency use authorization of this new medicine as soon as next week for First Responders like doctors and nurses and for atrisk groups like seniors and pfizer says at first theres only enough medicine for 25 Million People worldwide. Dr. Anthony fauci says that people getting the first shots could get them by december. Moving the drug across the world wont be easy. The vaccine is two doses, three weeks apart, and it has to be stored well below freezing, a huge challenge for shipping companies and local pharmacies. Your cvss, your walgreens do have solutions in place to schedule. Its not going to help if just the big box chains are the only ones who have this technology. Reporter pfizer set up 350 large freezers to store millions of doses of the vaccine. Once the government gives the okay, the company says that chartered flights will rush vaccines across the u. S. Within three days for those early groups, possibly at the height of shipping season for the holidays. Dr. Victoria smith is one of the heroes who helped us get here and she agreed to join the human trials and said she is happy to help bring an end to the pandemic. As an africanamerican female, knowing that this disease was affecting africanamericans and people of color disproportionately, i also wanted to be part of the race to a cure, not so much a cure, but something that could help prevent covid19. Reporter there are many people this morning questioning why pfizer couldnt have shared this welcome news before the election. The drugmaker says that it only saw these early results a few days ago. They underlined that they dont accept government funding for their research because theyre trying to keep the politics out of their science. George . Okay, steve, thanks. Lets bring back dr. Ashish jha. Good morning, dr. Jha. Thanks for coming back again this morning. Lets start with the vaccine. 90 effective, if it holds up, is a very powerful result. Yeah, good morning, george. Thanks for having me on. Absolutely, better than i was expecting. I thought we would get to 60 or 70 , if we got lucky. 90 would be really terrific. Would make a big difference. How long if this holds up will it take before we see widespread distribution . Yeah, you know, even under the best of circumstances, i think january, february is when were going to get highrisk people getting vaccinated and majority of americans probably march through may or june. So were still many months away from most of us being able to get vaccinated. So really prevention for the next bad season. Meantime, what do you make of this new antibody treatment thats been approved by the fda . I think its great. I think its two thoughts. First of all, again, it looks like if you give it to people early it has the potential to make a big difference. The problem, george, is we only have tens of thousands of doses of this and 100,000 people are getting infected every day. I wish we had invested in the same way that we did on vaccines on making millions of doses of this medicine. We just didnt do that over the summer as we should have. You just mentioned that figure, 100,000 people getting infected every day. I was startled to see you believe the actual number could be multiples higher than that. Yeah, i think its undoubtedly the case. Because our testing is so inadequate, and were missing so many people my best excuse me my best guess is between 300,000 and 400,000 americans are getting infected. Its much more worse than it appears. Thats a very sobering number, which means hospitalizations and deaths will increase as well. Theres no doubt about it. In my mind between now and inauguration day, unless we take bold action, were likely to see an additional 100,000 americans dying. Thats awful. I think we can prevent it, but weve got to take more aggressive action now. You said bold. We saw president elect biden call on people, time and time again, to wear a mask. What more needs to be done right now . Yes, so masks are absolutely essential. I think Congress Needs to get money to states and states need to expand testing so we can start identifying people instead of missing them. Those are two critical things i think are really important right now and everybody should be pulling in the same direction. Dr. Jha, thanks for coming back with us again this morning. Thank you, george. Michael . All right, george. As you said president elect biden is charging ahead promising a bold, new strategy to fight the virus but warning of a dark winter. Mary bruce has the latest, good morning, mary. Reporter good morning, michael. While the president elect is eager to show that hes ready to roll up his sleeves and navigate this crisis, he is urging americans to put their political differences aside and come together to tackle this common enemy and beat this pandemic. As the u. S. Passes 10 million covid cases, joe biden is welcoming the vaccine breakthrough but warning theres still more work to be done. The challenge before us right now is still immense and growing. Theres a need for bold action to fight this pandemic. Were still facing a very dark winter. Reporter after the president spent months downplaying masks, biden is now trying to reset the conversation. I want to be very clear. The goal of mask wearing is not to make your life less comfortable. Its to give Something Back to all of us, a normal life. Reporter urging americans to come together and do their part. We can save tens of thousands of lives if everyone would just wear a mask for the next few months. Not democrat or republican lives, american lives. Reporter with 71 days until hes sworn in, biden is forging ahead announcing his own Coronavirus Task force and being briefed. Dr. Anthony fauci who sits on President Trumps task force praising the group as admired colleagues. The nations top Infectious Disease expert says he plans to stay on the job too. I have no intention of leaving. Ive been doing it under six president s. Its an important job and my goal is to serve the american public, no matter what the administration is. Reporter the White House Monday with its own Coronavirus Briefing led by Vice President mike pence. Their first meeting in nearly three weeks. This morning, the Trump Administration is yet again the center of a covid outbreak. Housing secretary ben carson, a doctor and member of the president s covid panel, and david bossie who is leading the president s election legal team, among at least nine people in trumps circle to be diagnosed in recent days. The president himself largely out of sight since bidens victory speech, still refusing to concede. But biden is already looking ahead to the hard challenge of uniting the country. We can get this virus under control, i promise you. We can rebuild our economy back better than it was before. We can address racebased disparities that damage our country. Its in our power. So lets wear a mask. Lets get to work. Reporter now, while the biden team is pushing ahead, there are very real hurdles to this transition if the Trump Administration refuses to acknowledge that biden is the winner. The General Services administration has to officially recognize that biden won in order to free up Critical Resources for this transition like funding, access to classified information and secured facilities. The biden team is urging them to act swiftly and warning, if they dont, they may take legal action. George . Okay, mary, thanks. That isnt happening because President Trump is refusing to accept the Election Results, repeating false claims as his campaign files lawsuits challenging ballot counts with scant evidence, and his attorney general versus longstanding policy to authorize investigations into the election before the results are certified. That has prompted a protest resignation by the senior in charge of the investigation. Terry moran has the latest. Good morning, terry. Reporter good morning, george. Attorney general william barr has previously been accused of playing politics with the Justice Department to please President Trump and now, as you say, he has taken the extraordinary step breaking with longstanding government policy to give politically appointed federal prosecutors the power to launch probes into the 2020 election. This morning, attorney general william barr is giving federal prosecutors the green light to investigate Election Fraud allegations and fueling President Trumps conspiracy theories. Memo to all u. S. Attorneys barr authorizes them to look into any clear and apparently credible allegations of irregularities that, if true, could potentially impact the outcome of a federal election in an individual state. That breaks with longstanding Justice Department policy to delay any such investigations until after states certify elections. A Justice Department officials claims the attorney general is acting on his own, without direction from the president. But the move comes as the Trump Campaign continues to push baseless claims that the election was somehow rigged against him. Even though federal and state judges have thrown out multiple lawsuits citing a lack of evidence. Barr also admits in that memo nothing here should be taken as any indication that the department has concluded that voting irregularities have impacted the outcome of any election. As the president refuses to concede, the president s legal team vowing to see their challenges to the elections outcome through to the bitter end. We are very close to the automatic recount statute in pennsylvania. Reporter and President Trump is now getting a boost from Republican Leadership. President trump is 100 within his rights to look into allegations of irregularities and weigh his legal options. Reporter in another sign trump wont go quietly he abruptly fired his defense secretary via tweet writing, mark esper has been terminated. I would like to thank him for his service. Esper on the outs with the president after he defied him over the summer saying he would refuse to deploy the military to crack down on protesters. And he now insists he was no yesman as for telling the military times, whos pushed back more than anybody . Name another cabinet secretary thats pushed back. Have you seen me on a stage saying under the Exceptional Leadership of blah, blah, blah, we have blah, blah, blah, blah . Back to the Justice Department and the attorney generals memo. It sent shock waves through the department, and within hours richard pilger, whos the top federal election crimes prosecutor resigned in pros test. George . Terry, we have to underscore how extraordinary this is. Theres no widespread evidence of voter fraud. No prospect the Election Results are going to be overturned, yet the president continues to sow doubt aided by the attorney general and the entire Republican Leadership at least in the senate. Reporter thats right. Every time they have brought allegations of fraud into courts, federal and state courts in nevada, arizona, michigan and pennsylvania, theyve lost. Theyre 0 for 10 right now because the judges have said theres no evidence, george. And terry, the Supreme Court is going to take up that challenge to the Affordable Care act today. Reporter thats right. This is the big one, george, the health care of millions of americans, people with preexisting conditions, their guaranteed access to health care all on the line. This all stems from an effort by President Trump and the Republican Party to bring down the law in its entirety, asking the court to strike down the law altogether after the republicans passed a law that zeroed out, that zeroed out the tax the individual mandate penalty. All eyes on Justice Amy Coney barrett but the betting is the court wont go as far as the president and the party want them to. A major election issue. Terry, thanks very much. Robin . Now big game for the new England Patriots last night. Comeback. Quarterback cam newton powering his team to a 3027 win against the struggling new york jets. I mean, twice in the game the pats were down by 10. And then in the final minute, cam newton got them in position, 51yard field goal at the buzzer, so to speak, and they snap their losing streak after four straight losses. What say you, Michael Strahan . What says me is were talking about new england snapping a losing streak and the jets have not won a game all year. Come on, jets. Jets. Where is our gary our stagehand . Dont do that to gary. Ill save gary. Were following a lot of other headlines this morning including new concerns about college kids, covid and thanksgiving. Abcs Stephanie Ramos has more this morning. Good morning, stephanie. Reporter michael, good morning. I was kind of caught up in the moment. Such an incredible victory but i was like, wow, this is my First Time Since march where i was like shoulder to shoulder with that large amount of people. Reporter notre dame says all students had to test negative the same week as the game to attend. According to notre dames covid tracker the campus is facing more than 200 active cases. This is just the latest trouble for the university. Notre dames president reverend john jenkins was forced to apologize in september after he was seen maskless at the white house Supreme Court nomination of judge amy coney barrett. Jenkins becoming one of at least 14 attendees to test positive for covid19. Now, as cases across the u. S. Top 10 million, the New York Times finding more than 38,000 have been reported at colleges since late october. And that has some Public Health experts urging students not to travel home at all. We would encourage students not to go home. And the reason is that we know with travel comes risk of exposure. And so we would prefer students stay on campus and do a virtual thanksgiving with their family. Reporter notre dame, which is ending its fall semester before thanksgiving, is mandating socalled exit testing for all students before they leave campus. Any students who skip, wont be allowed to register for classes next semester. Experts say, if students are planning to travel, the time to start preparing is now. What were advising students is, if they are planning to go home, that they start 14 days in advance of leaving campus to limit contacts, to limit their activities. Reporter here at rutgers university, covid testing is not required for employees and students but it is offered to certain groups who are working here on campus. Michael . Stephanie, if students are planning to head home for the holidays, the cdc has recently posted specific guidance. Reporter they did. So the cdc says the safest option is to celebrate with only those who are in your household. But if youre not, be that person and bring your own plate, bring your cup, bring your utensils and have your meal outdoors. If youre having it indoors, make sure the windows are open but take those extra precautions. Keep your distance and wear a mask. Michael . All right. Stephanie ramos, thank you very much. George . Okay, were going to move to new concerns about hoarding Household Items as cases surge across the country and shoppers are stocking up and stores are putting limits on certain items and will reeve has details. Reporter good morning, at the beginning of the pandemic we all saw the rush for things like toilet paper, paper towels, now with cases surging and the holidays approaching, could there be shortages on the horizon . We spoke with an expert to help us understand what to expect. With record numbers of covid infections sweeping the country, experts say shoppers are starting to stock up again. Fearing another round of shortages in stores in the coming months. We absolutely are starting to see shortages again. Reporter grocery chain kroger announcing on monday its bringing back product limits to help prevent shortages limiting purchases of toilet paper, paper towels, disinfecting wipes and hand soap to two per customer. Grocer heb is putting limits on Paper Products and disinfectant wipes in some of its stores again. Last week, on a Quarterly Earnings call, clorox announced it is still not at a point to meet demand predicting shortages on its wipes will continue through the end of the year and its not just those staples. This time around experts are seeing high demand for other products as well. You have this perfect storm now where americas supply chains are still recovering from the first wave of panic buying and now you have the largest selling season of the entire year on top of that. Reporter while experts say its unclear yet if theyll see shortages, they have seen an early surge in holiday mainstays, especially those nonperishables, like boxed stuffing and canned goods. For those counting down the days until pumpkin pie, some bad news for bakers. Spices still seeing sky high sales are another category that could soon be in low supply. The spice category is absolutely going through the roof. So we believe that during this pandemic, theres been a totally different buying pattern and really a generation that started to cook a lot more than they used to due to necessity. Reporter none of this is meant to induce panic. As weve reported before, its imperative you have a plan and you be prepared. Remember, those experts say stock up on the nonperishables, the frozen items that will last you through the holidays and take solace in the fact that the retailers have been preparing for this so the staple items, the toilet paper, the paper towels will likely be more available this time around. Robin . Encouraging news. Thank you, will. Coming up later on gma, well have more on thanksgiving travel. Airlines adding thousands of flights to meet the skyrocketing demand. Reporter according to richards, trebek spent the day before he passed away on a swing he had recently rebuilt in his backyard looking at the horizon with his wife jeanne just like he wanted. Ill be perfectly content if thats how my story ends, sitting on the swing with the woman i love, my soulmate, and our two wonderful children nearby. Richard said trebek was coherent, not in pain, thinking of the people he loved most, family and fans. Put into terms what these fans mean to you, fans of the show. They are the most important elements in my life outside of my family and friends because they have expressed their feelings about me in so many positive ways that i cant help but be touched by what they have to say. Guys, you heard him there. That was an excerpt of his audio, right, from his book, talking about that swing. This is the rest of the quote, the excerpt from the book, he says ill sit this for awhile and then maybe the four of us will go for a walk, each day trying to walk a little further than the last, well take things one step at a time, one day at a time. As always, you bring it, lara. Thank you. Thank you, lara. Were going to move on now to our gma cover story shining a light on Pancreatic Cancer Awareness and action in the wake of alex trebeks passing. Dr. Jen ashton joins us right now. Jen, alex actually did well, it appeared, for quite some time, but its such a deadly disease. In general absolutely, george. You know, its on track by the year 2025 to be the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the u. S. Behind lung cancer. And part of the reason it tends to be so deadly has to do with anatomy. If you look at where the pancreas is located, it sits high up in the abdominal cavity. You cant palpate it or feel it on a physical exam. By the time its producing symptoms, like yellowness of the skin or eyes, or weight loss, its generally metastasized or spread to an advanced stage. So those are two of the warning signs . Yeah. You know, i mean it can produce vague symptoms, thats part of the problem and theres no Screening Test for it. But the good news is there are more Treatment Options than ever. Mainstays of treatment depending on stage and the health of the person, of course, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy. But then theres a whole new class of socalled targeted therapies, things using parp inhibitors theyre called, or Checkpoint Inhibitors attached to a Major Cancer Center usually but theres always reason for optimism and hope and with pancreatic cancer the same thing applies. And is there anything people can do to reduce their risk of contracting pancreatic cancer . Well, some of these things are under our control. So theres a long list. It starts with the basics, dont smoke, keep your diet and weight in a healthy range, exercise is really important and then the things that we can avoid, limit or minimize. Things like a lot of processed or red meat, heavy alcohol or sugar use or certain chemical workplace exposures. Again, some of these things under our control. Some of them are not. The brca1 and 2 mutation that people think about with breast and Ovarian Cancer also can increase the risk of some cases of pancreatic cancer. So, again, alex trebek showing us inspiration and increasing awareness even after hes gone. Jen ashton, thanks very much. Lets go to the ginger. Yes, george, max sustained winds now 60 Miles Per Hour in eta and its moving south at five and it will turn back north and inches toward the coast by late weekend and may get absorbed. A long time and big margin of error there, but we also have to mention theta formed, the 29th storm. It is time now to meet the new bachelorette. After last weeks episode ended with an early proposal between clare and dale, Tayshia Adams is taking over and looking for love with the remaining contestants. Will reeve got a chance to talk to her. Hey, will. Reporter hey there, michael. What a wild turn of events. Bachelorette number one is too good at the show. She falls in love. She leaves. Bachelorette number two comes in in a pandemic, tayshia wants everyone to know shes nobodys second choice. Its been an unprecedented season. Bachelorette Clare Crowley leaving the show midseason falling in love and getting a ring. Clare, will you marry me . Yes. Reporter passing the rose on to the newest bachelorette, Tayshia Adams. Shes no stranger to bachelor nation. Im freaking out. Reporter making it to the final three in Colton Underwoods season of the bachelor. My heart is with somebody else. Reporter appearing on bachelor in paradise but this time shes in charge. I can finally say im the bachelorette and that feels so good. Reporter for her its about more than finding love. How do you feel about being the second black bachelorette . Im so happy to have the opportunity and the platform that i do to identify with girls that look like me, thats never seen someone on their screens that represent them. Reporter getting tapped to step in as the new bachelorette came as a surprise. Yeah, i got a phone call from one of the producers. I was actually in bed in my pajamas reading a book, eating doughnuts. What was the experience like of being thrown into the show in a pandemic . It definitely wasnt normal. Reporter tayshia wanted to have her own experience. She says at first she had reservations about the remaining men who had been there for clare. Being a second choice is not a good feeling. It was one of my hesitations. After having conversations with all of the men, they welcomed me with open arms and made me feel so special and loved and they wanted me to be there. The limo pulls up. Theres some new guys that come in. Whats going through your head . I had no idea. I was not expecting that. What can you tell us about your journey . I really allow myself to fall in love and i really allow myself to experience different relationships that i dont ever think that i would have the opportunity to outside of all of this. Reporter and who should bachelor nation keep its eyes on . To be honest with you, every single one of them. I feel like you have not even seen these guys yet. Its just getting started. Reporter i tried to get spoilers out of tayshia any way i could. No luck but she said as far as matters of her heart are concerned, she is happy and that she got what she came for. So the decoding of that answer begins tonight at 8 00 eastern on abc. Michael . All right, one season of bachelor, maybe both find love. The bachelorette is back to its regular time slot at 8 00 p. M. Here on abc. Robin, before we get to that, i just want to give them a preview. Will you accept this rose . Oh, dont do that, michael. You know theyll put you on the show. Theyre going to put you on the show. But before we do that, we have gma at the cma awards with a preview of our annual special leading up to Country Musics big night with unprecedented access to the stars. We got a look at how the pandemic has impacted the entire Country Music community and how the industry is moving forward. All right, real quick, finish this sentence. This year has been oh, wow. My god. Let me think. Well, this years been enlightening. Unpredictable. Eye opening. Country music in 2020 is what . Stronger than a garlic milkshake. [ laughter ] i mean, its true. Its true. That was good. We actually quarantined with some of our best friends. Wow dang it. I had like eight boys i had to cook for for two months. So im an official grill master. It was like a james beard chef maybe. Got my michelin stars. We were able to put in a garden, grow an enormously large corn patch. Little tip for you guys, never get bored during the pandemic and plant four acres of sweet corn. But even going to bed at night oh, lord you know, sleeping in my bed every night with my wife, i mean, you know, there was a time there i was like literally getting into bed at 8 15 every night watching a couple shows together and id never had that really ever in our marriage. It was trying at times. We still havent killed each other. Came close a couple times. But, you know, it was fun. I think shes probably excited for me to get back on the road a little bit. I remember a couple years ago spending time with luke and his wife at their farm for this special. And this year the unprecedented access again, all these stars, led to some raw and emotional moments where they discussed the reality of living through the pandemic. Also about the racial unrest across the nation showing a really personal side to these stars that they dont normally reveal. They really opened up. You can see it right there. The 2020 special country strong 2020 countdown to the cma awards is tonight at 10 00 p. M. Eastern on abc. Its going to be a great watch. Without a doubt. Now were going to turn to that big night in the ballroom. Dancing with the stars saying goodbye to backstreet boy aj mclean and cheryl burke, but it may have been a breakthrough night for a bachelorette. Lara, you have all the details as always. Hey, again. Reporter oh, yes, you said it, michael. With the semifinals less than a week away, the pressure is on. The remaining six couples, the last dance or last night the dancers were revving up their rumbas in the battle for the mirror ball. Check this out. An incredible night with the competition tougher than ever. Perfect scores for johnny weir and kaitlyn bristow. Perfect score, you guys. Reporter the bachelorettes high praise extra special after weeks of tough criticism from carrie ann inaba. Its a 10. Reporter online many attacking the judge for being too harsh. I have to say i got to give you a standing o. That was incredible. When i see potential, its a green light to push them harder. Kaitlyn has great potential. She started off as a great dancer but now we need to see progress. Honestly i would probably just say thank you right now. Because it did light a bit of a fire underneath us and im glad we could break through that and impress them, and carrie ann especially. Reporter but ultimately the backstreet boy star couldnt last another week. I learned really quickly within the first few weeks that, yes, its a dance competition, but theres way more to it than that. Those that have gone and those that are still here moving forward, i wish everybody the best of luck and still its a close race. Yeah. May the best man or woman. Yeah. Win that mirror ball. Exactly. And then ship it to me and cheryls house. Reporter well, their time in the ballroom might be over, but its not over for aj and cheryl. Theyre keeping their partnership with a podcast called pretty messed up. Aj says after his first solo album drops this year, he wants cheryl to dance this one of his music videos. Michael . I love it. Riva loved that card too. All right, lara, thank you so much. And everybody, you know, get ready for the dancing with the stars semifinals and Double Elimination next monday night at 8 00 p. M. Eastern, 7 00 central here on abc. Coming up, Emmanuel Acho is here with us live. Ith us live. Acho is here with us live. Hey bay area, live with kelly and ryan coming up. We have jonathan scott, property brothers. Well have another abc 7 news update in about 30 minutes. And you can always find the latest on our app and at abc 7 news. Com. Were going to leave you with a live look right now of downtown san francisco. 42 degrees right now in the city. Well be right back. You can tell everybody its Tuesday Morning here on gma. We have a great guest right now, Emmanuel Acho, the football star who struck a chord with his hit video series, Uncomfortable Conversations with a black man. Now he goes deeper in his new book with the same name and, emmanuel, you see him now joining us to talk about all it. Good morning. Wonderful to have you back here on gma. And congratulations on the new book and its hard to believe its only been five months since your video series. Already has over 65 million views. What are you hearing from people, emmanuel, about it . Yeah, im hearing just a resounding plea for more. Its as if its never enough. I think people loved the dialogue and realize theres so much racial tension in america and, robin, they want to be a part of the solution. They are tired of being part of the problem. While we have been facing this pandemic of the body, this virus and covid, theres also been a virus of the mind and racism and so many people are committed to the efforts of changing americas longest lasting plague of racism. And, emmanuel, is that where the book comes in, gives you a chance to flesh out the ideas and gives people a chance to spend more time with them. Youre exactly right, george. Thats exactly why i wrote this book. I dont care so much for cliques. I dont care about sizzle which comes with the spoken word. I care about substance and that comes with the written word. See, when i go on camera, people might share it. They might like it but when you write a book you give someone a figurative baton to run a relay race towards reconciliation that they can read, that they can carry and pass on to the next generation and the next generation. If we really want to cure racism in our minds and our hearts, it doesnt just start with us. What can we do to effect those that come after us . Racism and racial reconciliation is not a finish line well cross. Its a road that well travel so we have to travel it together. Emmanuel, in your most recent video, you talk with White Police Officers about their relationship with the black community. We have a clip of that of some of the moments at the end of that conversation. Lets check it out. Its opened our eyes to say, look, there is this major problem in this country. When you talk about how were perceived by black people when we show up on scene, having an understanding there of the difference is so important. Can lead us to removing some barriers to communication which ultimately we want to have. We cant be part of the solution if were part of the problem. Hmm. You say this conversation is the one in which you felt the most changed. Why is that . Yeah, michael, because i said this proximity breeds care. And distance, it breeds fear. I was in that city, petaluma, california, 60,000 people. Less than 1 black. The first question i asked those gentlemen, have you ever had a conversation, dinner with a group of black people . And the resounding answer was, no and so they opened up their aperture of understanding as it pertains to color and culture because, see, michael, its not just a color issue were dealing with in america. Its a culture issue were dealing with in america. So when youre talking to my White Brothers and sisters, how can they fix a problem if they dont know the problem exists, how can they fix a problem if theyre not exposed to a different color or a different culture. So seeing as that group of men who were willing to sit down and listen with me dont frequently talk to someone who looks like me, their minds were opened and their hearts began to change and thats what this world needs more of. The willingness to be open like that. Youre so right. And there was another video that really struck me. It was with an interracial family and how white parents who adopt a black child and you said it even surprised you . Yeah, robin, i had a resounding plea saying emmanuel, theres so many people in my emails and dms saying im white raising black children. Help me, please. So i did an episode on it. I asked that beautiful black girls story, 12 years old from haiti. Her adopted mother jamie is white. I said do you wish your parents who were raising you were black and looked like you. Robin, she stared at me and said, no, emmanuel, i just want someone to love me for me. When she answered that question to me, when she answered that question to her mother, it was as though she with answering that question for the world. So many adoptive parents who lay their head in bed at night wondering if theyre adequate enough and wondering if theyre doing enough for their children who dont look like them, that girl gave the adequate answer, what they need is love. Thats what everyone wants. You talk about how white people can be allies and you have a chapter and each chapter you have a talk it, walk it section of the book. So talk it, walk it of being an ally. How does that work . Its not just enough to talk about wanting to help. The intentions are great. But where is your direction and thats why i wrote the book, Uncomfortable Conversations with a black man. Because, michael, so many people want to help but now im trying to give them the direction as to how to help. So i say, talk it, walk it. Because at first you got to talk it. But then you got to walk it. So all my allies, as i would say in football, my former sport, lets get off the bench, lets get out the stands. Stand up and get into the game. The first thing to do, educate yourself on what to do. Thats why i wrote the book. Now that you know what to do, its time to do it. Maya angelou said it best, to know better is to do better. 2020 has been such a fraught year. Do you come away from 2020 more encouraged or or anxious about where we are in racial reconciliation . Powerful question. I come away from 2020 encouraged and im encouraged because as i look around and i look at people who have talked to me, i got a sweet email from a white woman, 70 years old named lynn and she said, emmanuel, i grew up with racism around me. I didnt go to school with any negro, she said, but after seeing your video, my heart and my mind has been opened. Please dont give up on me yet. I love you, my son and my brother. And when i got an email like that its hard not to be encouraged because you realize hearts are starting to turn. Minds are starting to change. We just have to persist on and fight this good, good fight towards racial reconciliation. Giving people the space you have, thank you so much. Because were too quick to say that somebody is racist and were too quick to say a black person is playing the race card or is too sensitive and we have to have these conversations of coming together and what youve done with the videos and your book. So thank you so much for that, emmanuel. Thank you, emmanuel. The book is called Uncomfortable Conversations with a black man. Its out today and well be right back. Cal theres no bad time to start at amazon. I like the flexibility. It also allows for picking up shifts. Safety comes first, speed comes second. Safety. Safety. Safety. Were making sure that somebody is getting their very important items. It makes me very happy. Announcer in a year unlike any other we asked Country Musics biggest stars. Womens National Team cocaptain, twotime world cup winner, olympic champion has become an outspoken champion for change. Had a chance to sit down to discussion one life and how shes using her platform to inspire others. Rapinoes shot and scores. Reporter Megan Rapinoe a force on the soccer field with her power plays and off the field with her empowering message. Step outside yourself. Be more. Be better. Be bigger than you have ever been before. Reporter in her new book, one life, megan reveals her path from athlete to activist. Your memoir, one life, takes readers on a journey back to your roots in redding, california. Tell us how your upbringing influenced the person that we see today. I mean, its everything. Its who i am. I have a really big, close family. A very opinionated family. I had the opportunity really too look back and really think like how did i end up here . This small, small town kid from a really conservative area. We might not agree on everything or have very different views on things, frankly, but i feel like im such a product of where im from, you know, those sort of small town values and it was just really cool to be able to kind of go back and run through memory lane. Reporter megan recalling a Pivotal Moment in her career when she took a knee in support of Colin Kaepernick in 2016. Despite facing backlash she writes, i felt ignited. Everything in my life had been leading to this. We know it goes far beyond the soccer field. Social change has become very important to you. Why . I mean, i just think everybody deserves respect and dignity and humanity. You know, growing up i didnt realize that i had that respect. I am privileged. You know, i know im a woman and i know that im gay but at the end of the day i have this white skin and that says a lot to everybody else and i just feel like the more ive learned and started to understand inequality whether that be racial inequality or pay equity or, you know, being a gay woman, i just think that everybody deserves this right. I think that a lot of people are suffering right now and some people are suffering more and some people are suffering because of systemic issues, systemic racism or just the history and the culture of this country. But i think at the end of the day, i want everyone to have the opportunity to just really be their full selves and i think us, as a country, will be better for it. Reporter megan stepping into her own authentic self. In 2012 became the first on the u. S. Womens National Team to come out and recently announcing her engagement to wnba star sue bird. Can you share what that moment was like . Something ive been thinking about for a long time. I wouldnt quite say i had all the plans sorted when i did it but the moment just presented itself and it was the right moment. Reporter on the world stage there was perhaps no bigger moment than winning the 2019 world cup. But megan and her team were also fighting for equal pay. I dont think anyone can disagree that equality is a good thing or that the gender gap exists or pay equity gap exists. I think we just need to be big and bold in solving it and being out front on that issue. Reporter despite a recent ruling striking down many of the teams gender discrimination claims including equal pay, megan says, the work continues. What did it mean when you heard people chanting about equal pay . [ crowd chanting equal pay ] to hear those chants, it meant so much because, of course, we started this lawsuit on our own behalf but i think we realized that we are truly speaking for millions of people. So to hear that, that sort of collective understanding of our fight knowing that its everybodys fight really meant so much. Reporter megan also embracing that moment with her signature pose, inspiring fans all across the country, writing, arms out wide, claim your space. You deserve the space that youre standing in and, you know, just be on the right side of history. As she says, be bold. One life, it is out everywhere today. Lets check back with ginger. Ginger .
