Solano county confirmed its first case of a person sick with covid19 and the flu. The individual is under 65 years old and is the first flu case this season for the county. Public Health Officials say the case is a reminder for people to get their flu shots as soon as possible. Our fear is that people will have a worse outcome because your body is going to be battling two viruses, not just one. And we worry for people with Underlying Health conditions, for people otherwise fragile, this combination can be very, very serious. The Health Officer says the same measures asked for us to stem the spread of covid19 like social distancing, mask wearing and washing hands are just as effective to prevent the flu. Uc burkely opened the first lab in the world dedicated to testing waste water. Abc 7 News Reporter kris reyes learned more how it works and how pub lulic Health Agencies cd put this data to use. Reporter tell me what were looking at . This is a sample of raw sewage. This came from a manhole. Reporter a manhole like this one where the water is collected over a 24hour period. The sample is then put through an eighthour process to break down the contents then tested for covid19. This sample could represent an entire neighborhood. Thats right. It could represent up to a million people. Reporter scientists here believe this method could be a promising new tool for public Health Agencies that have had trouble with mass testing, including long lineups and delayed results. Already, the lab collected more than 500 samples all over the bay area, many of them testing positive for the virus. To me, its not surprising because when there is a pandemic, people are infected and people will shed the virus in their feces which is transported in the waste water. Reporter this lab run by uc berkeley professor cara nelson has three fulltime employees in daily communication with scientists around the world. They are using Ground Breaking methods. The real value of this testing is were able to test not just asymptomatic people and presymptomatic people who dont know theyre sick and wont get a test because they dont know but people that dont have access to testing or medical care or maybe afraid to get tested. Reporter the lab is currently testing 30 samples a week but can ramp up to process 200 with a 72hour turn around for results. I think it will become more useful as cases go down when it doesnt make sense to be testing everyone all the time but we still need to be on the lookout. Reporter this waste water spreading out of control. For that reason its the work of a lifetime. There is nothing more pre pressing than during a pandemic. Needless to say, the holidays will be very different because of the pandemic and all this week, were exploring the new way to holiday and 7 on your side Michael Finney is here live with aically changed black friday. That will be completely different. It will be absolutely different. The good news is it is still going to be fun. There are still going to be deals but youre going to have to deal with it. Remember black friday lines . The crowd was stable. The mad dash through the aisles. Then loading up on great deals. That was then and this is now. Pandemic now. This year will be a little more mellow than in the past starting the day before black friday. The biggest difference is major retailers are not opening on thanksgiving this year. Few know more than her. Shes the editor of black friday. Com. There will be as many deals online as in stores so there is less of a reason to go out. Carla martin is with the control team listen to what she has to say. I think this year were seeing at least in our survey cyber monday is going to sure past black friday. Black friday is an event, right . Right. An event that may have less appeal during a pandemic. With covid, doing that six feet apart the way they throttle you in and out of the store is a wet blanket on the whole event. So a lot of this years retailing efforts will swing away from events and towards online sales. Either way, gift card expert Shelley Hunter says shoppers are ready for a good time and shopping. People are ready for the holidays. They are out there looking for deals now and stores are responding. With deals not with much information so far about what to expect on black friday. An exception is walmart. The retail giant is releasing information and walmart is all in but in a much different way. Outside the store, people are lining up single file social distancing. Theyre going to limit the number of people allowed in stores at one time, and what i find interesting is they said theyre going to have the items that are in the sale available on the right side of the isles. From mad dash to pass to the left, shop to the right. Because now black friday is a season more than a day. So start shopping now and those sales prices will come and go. The deals will be there. The question is will the fun . People that normally would have gone out of town for the holidays know they will be at home. They are staying home and saying how can we make this year special without going to visit the people or the places we usually go . Carla martin says we will be decorating and buying ourselves gifts as we assess how much we will spend this year. People will still be buying Christmas Gifts but well hold off a little later because of economic uncertainties coming into a period of election season, winter spikes, covid spikes, people will wait a little bit before they decide what theyre going to spend. Black friday. Com editor says shopping ochonline is differentt no less fun. I think it just as exciting because the things are still on limited supply. Refresh the site. Add stuff to your cart quickly. Know what youre buying. So when do you get the very best deals . When should you shop . Nobody really knows. It may be today. It may be tomorrow. It may be a month from now. The deals are out there so start looking now so if you know what you want, ama, youll be able to cash in but you got to know what you want. Making my list. All right.
