Is approaching 9 million cases according to data from johns hopkins. Today marked a new daily case record at more than 84,700. Dr. Anthony fauci says the u. S. Could on track to hit 100,000 new cases a day and half a Million Deaths by february unless the country takes Public Health measures seriously. Here in the bay area, Solano County is reporting the first case of a flu and covid19 coinfection. Now, u. C. Berkeley opened the first lab in the world dedicated to testing waste water for covid19. The trail blazing method could test entire communities in 72 hours with a small sample. Kris reyes learned more. Reporter tell me what were looking at here. This is a sample of raw sewage. This is 40 milliliters that came from a manhole. Reporter a manhole like this one where the water is collected over a 24hour period and the sample is put through an eighthour process to break down the contents and tested for covid19. So this sample could represent an entire neighborhood. Thats right. This sample could represent up to a Million People. Reporter scientists here believe this method could be a promising new tool for Public Health agencies that have had trouble with mass testing including long lineups and delayed results. Already, the lab collected more than 500 samples all over the bay area, many of them testing positive for the virus. To me its not surprising because we know there is a pandemic and we know people are infected and infected people will shed the virus in their feces, which is transported in the waste water. Reporter this lab run by u. C. Berkeley professor cara nelson has three fulltime staff but they are in daily communication with hundreds of scientists around the world. Many of them are using Ground Breaking methods developed here a few months ago. The real value of this testing is that were able to test not just asymptomatic people and presymptomatic people that dont know theyre sick and wont get a test because they dont know but people that dont have access to testing or medical care or afraid to get tested. Reporter the lab is testing 30 samples a week but can ramp up to process 200 with a 72hour turn around for results. I think it will become more useful as cases go down when it doesnt make sense to be testing everyone all the time but we still need to be on the lookout. You know, he might be a duck calm on the outside, paddling like crazy underneath the water but he seems to excel when the pressure is the greatest. He only went into the second inning in the world series but he still pitched really well. The home run by randy in the first was actually an excellent pitch. It was one of those tip your hat moments that randy hit that. It was outside his signature splitter and, you know, to get beat on your best pitch, you know, things happen but. Sure, sure. Its just amazing, you know, obviously to be on this stage, the world series, the biggest stage in baseball to compete, to compete well im sure it will just put another file in the file cabinet that next year hopefully hell be in the same situation and just be able to draw on that experience and succeed even better next time whether it be playoffs or world series.
