Turning to the race for a vaccine for covid19 and a new Distribution Plan for new york state thats being unveiled by governor andrew cuomo. It comes amid new concern of a fresh wave of infections just as we get into flu season. I spoke earlier with dr. Darien sutton about those headlines. Dr. Sutton, good morning. Thank you for joining us. I want to start by asking you how is this surge of covid infections were seeing right now different than what we saw over the summer, and are we better equipped to deal with it now . Right now the difference between now and the summer is were currently entering into the flu season. As far as Clinical Management, our treatment hasnt really changed. Were still continuing to study for possible benefits of Clinical Management modalities. Just for context, right now were battling approximately 60,000 new cases per day. In the summer we were averaging at its peak around 75,000 cases per day in mid july. Our goal is to prevent going in that direction and to also prevent hospitals from reaching capacity from battling the simultaneous virus of the flu and covid19. Dr. Scott atlas of the White House Coronavirus task force tweeted a message which has now been removed by twitter saying masks dont prevent covid. He says widespread mask use not supported and many harms. Whats your reaction to what dr. Atlas is trying to say . That statement is false and frustrating and its concerning that opinion is guiding the president of the United States. Weve seen in numerous studies the benefit of wearing a mask and reducing the risk of transmission and exposure to covid19 and weve seen how this plays out on a regional level. According to the covid tracking project, southern and mid western states account for 70 of new cases. Many of these states do not have mask mandates in place. In south dakota, that has no mask mandate, its leading in terms of covid19 rates and has surpassed 75 icu capacity. Its quite simple. Wearing a mask can reduce the risk of transmission and exposure to covid19 and ultimately infection. And if we all participate, save thousands of lives. Lastly, new York Governor Andrew Cuomo has unveiled a vaccine Distribution Plan. He says it would begin with Health Care Workers and nursing home residents followed by First Responder and teachers, people over 65 and then healthy adults and children. What are your thoughts on that timeline . Do you think this will be the plan across the country . Though we have yet to see a specific data on safety or efficacy on a vaccine, i think its wise to start planning for production and distribution of a possible covid19 vaccine. If you look at the plans of governor cuomo, theyre in line with the w. H. O. Guidance, which is a framework that focuses on the fair and equitable distribution of a covid19 vaccine. Our thanks to dr. Darien sutton. Overnight there is a big celebration underway for dodger nation. Los angeles is back in the world series for the third time in four years. L. A.
