The number linked to the president continues to climb including 24 and Stephen Miller. All but one of the military chiefs have gone into quarantine. Covid is still spreading in congress. Its a chaotic situation in our Nations Capital right now. Senior White House Correspondent cecilia vega starts us off. Good morning, cecilia. Reporter george, good morning to you. The white house has become a hotbed of infection. As for President Trump, his doctor says that he is showing no new symptoms and continues to improve. We havent seen him since he left walter reed but he has been as active as ever on twitter. This morning, the covid outbreak spreading through the white house has reached the pentagon and now almost the entire joint chiefs of staff, including the militarys most senior general mark milley and other top officers are in quarantine after being exposed to the coast guards number two officer, admiral charles ray. Its unclear exactly how ray contracted the virus, but he did attend a white house event for gold star families a week and a half ago. The pentagon insists there is no change to the operational readiness or Mission Capability of the u. S. Armed forces. Former director of National Intelligence James Clapper says it puts the country at risk. This is an ideal time for adversaries, particularly and adversary intelligence services, to look for ways to further confuse us, to distract us. Reporter this, as the number of people testing positive who have been near the president or at the white house in recent days spiked to 24. The latest name, Senior Adviser Stephen Miller who was part of a debate prep session with the president last week. Six out of nine people present now testing positive. Dont be afraid of it. Reporter as President Trump continues to downplay the severity of the virus, the white house has become a hotbed of infection. His military aide who calls the socalled nuclear football, a president ial valet who serves his meals, plus two more staffers in the press Office Testing positive. Aides insist resident staff wear full ppe and those who have direct contact with the first family are tested daily. There inside the white house and in isolation the president also sending shock waves through the economy using twitter to announce he abruptly ended talks with democrats on an economic stimulus bill meant to deliver much needed aid to americans struggling in the pandemic. The market immediately tanking. President trump accused House Speaker nancy pelosi of not negotiating in good faith. Pelosi fired right back saying, clearly the white house is in complete disarray. Now, President Trump said that he wants his party to focus on approving judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court rather than this economic stimulus, but this abrupt move angered even some in his own party. Susan collins of maine called this a huge mistake. His position became more confusing overnight as he suggested that he might willing to sign a bill for another round of checks for americans, but democrats have said they dont want to do this in a piecemeal way. George, theyre looking to do this as a broad economic recovery package. All over the map and part of the tweet storm. About 40 tweets he sent out over a twohour period last night on all kinds of subjects. All over the map and by our count over the course of the day, 65 some odd tweets, everything from Hillary Clinton to russia, blasting his own fda, now, you know, weve covered this president for a long time, hes someone who craves the spotlight. He just is in isolation. That could be at play here, but, george, joe biden responded by telling the president , get off twitter. Get off twitter. That was late last night. Okay, cecilia, thanks very much. This all comes as the virus is surging in the u. S. 32 states reporting increases in case, more than 210,000 americans have died. 31,000 people are currently hospitalized and we have just heard from dr. Anthony fauci who said the number of deaths could climb to up to 400,000 if people in this country do not do what we need to do. Well have much more on this in our next half hour, robin. We will, george. But now to tonights Vice President ial debate taking place at the university of utah under those extraordinary circumstances. With 27 days to go until the final votes, an estimated nearly 5 million americans already taking advantage of early voting options to cast their ballots. Our mary bruce has the very latest. Shes there in Salt Lake City for us. Good morning, mary. Reporter robin, good morning. Well, this is it. The only matchup between senator Kamala Harris and Vice President mike pence and theres new urgency to this debate tonight. With the president s diagnosis and with joe biden possibly set to become the nations oldest president americans are looking to have some confidence, some reassurance that the Vice President can step in if needed, and already the coronavirus is front and center on tonights debate stage. Kamala harris and mike pence now just hours away from their first faceoff. Were looking very much forward to the Vice President ial debate. Reporter but this morning, new questions about the Vice President s safety after white house adviser Stephen Miller tested positive. His wife, katie miller, is pences Communications Director. She was traveling with him in utah, but after her husbands diagnosis, she was abruptly sent home. Shes tested negative the past two days. The white house insists the Vice President is safe to debate. His doctors saying pence has not been in close contact with anyone who has tested positive and is encouraged to go about his normal activities and does not need to quarantine, but pence was seen here at what is now being called a superspreader event. That rose garden ceremony sitting right in front of senator mike lee who shortly after tested positive. The harris team is not satisfied demanding more safety precautions at tonights debate. The candidates will now be at a greater distance, more than 12 feet apart, but the harris team also wants these plexiglas barriers to remain in place. Initially, the pence team mocked the request saying, if senator harris wants to use a fortress around herself, have at it, but overnight changing their tone saying, if such a barrier is critical for the harris team, then were not going to let it stand in the way. And the hurdles for this debate pale in comparison to the charges for next weeks president ial debate. The president still covid positive, is promising his supporters at that debate in miami, but overnight, joe biden drawing a line saying that there will be no debate until after the president tests negative, and is rid of this virus. The debate host telling us, this is all up in the air. Everything depends on the president s health. Robin . It certainly does, and mary, you know less than a month to go until the election, and now top intelligence officials are now trying to boost americans confidence when it comes to election day . Reporter leaders in the Intelligence Community are joining forces releasing a video trying to assure americans that they can be confident that the 2020 election will be conducted safely and securely, and also urging americans to be patient as the election may not be called on november 3rd. It, of course, is a sharp contrast with the message coming from the president who has been trying to sow doubt, spreading false claims that this election is going to be fraudulent, robin. Quite a contrast, yes, and i know its going to be a long day for you, mary. Were going to have full coverage of the Vice President ial debate tonight. George is going to be anchoring with our Political Team starting at 8 00 p. M. Eastern, michael . Looking forward to that. Chen saying he never expected there were so many patients at home who had never been hospitalized with these longterm symptoms. Glad to hear that, eva. Thank you so much. Joining us now is dr. Jennifer ashton and, jen, you know, im trying to think. Are there any other illness that affect patients like we just saw in evas report . Well, robin, imagine how terrifying and frustrating it is to be suffering these symptoms like we just heard and doctors have never heard of this, theyve never seen it. They dont know what causes it and they dont know how to treat it. Yes, weve seen other similar syndromes after infections, sometimes after viruses, epstein barr. Weve seen it in chronic lyme. We see it with Chronic Fatigue syndrome. Weve even seen it after sars and the theory and i want to emphasize the theory is that somehow this virus attacks the lining of the blood vessels and or the autonomic nervous system and produces these debilitating symptoms. What are longterm possible effects of coronavirus and the complications that were seeing these patients suffer with . Well, robin, this, it seems to be producing a vague array of symptoms ranging from fatigue, we have body aches, muscle aches, shortness of breath. This mental fog or cognitive changes. People cant concentrate leading to basically in some cases an inability to function and as we heard this number seems to be growing. If you remember the tip of the iceberg that we heard from epidemiologists that so many millions of people may have had covid not even be diagnosed. We are talking about potentially a significant number of people. And, jen, a new study out this week about the mental effects of coronavirus. Nearly a third of hospitalized patients experiencing some type of mental dysfunction. So do we know why this is happening . We dont. Somehow this virus is accessing the brain tissues. Weve seen it again with other types of coronavirus. Its not clear whether its due to a change in blood supply to the brain or an inflammatory response but huge numbers for neurologic and mental and psychological effects that, again, were keeping an eye on. Okay, jen, thank you so much. We thank the patients for coming forward to let others know that theyre not alone if theyre suffering with this. Thanks so much, jen. Coming up later, we have our exclusive first look at new technology that can help detect signs of coronavirus in schools. How it could make going back to the classroom safer. And coming up next, we have our play of the day. Safer and coming up next we have our play of the day. First, we have a lot of news to get to. Well start with the latest on the coronavirus crisis. A number of cases linked to the president s inner circle, 24 including Stephen Miller. It is a chaotic situation in our Nations Capital right now. Lets go back to senior White House Correspondent cecilia vega. Good morning, cecilia. Reporter george, good morning again. The president s doctors say that he is improving and showing no new symptoms, but as you said there are growing concerns about this number of people who are now testing positive who are linked to the white house, including concerns over the safety of those who work in the white house residence. This morning, the covid outbreak spreading through the white house has reached the pentagon and now almost the entire joint chiefs of staff including the militarys most senior general, mark milley, and other top officers are in quarantine after being exposed to the coast guards number two officer, admiral charles ray. Its unclear exactly how ray contracted the virus. But he did attend a white house event for gold star families a week and a half ago. The pentagon insists there is no change to the operational readiness or Mission Capability of the u. S. Armed forces. Former director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, says it puts the country at risk. This is an ideal time for adversaries, and particularly adversary intelligence services, to look for ways to further confuse us, to distract us. Reporter this as the number of people testing positive who have been near the president or at the white house in the recent days, spiked to 24. The latest name, Senior Adviser Stephen Miller who was part of a debate prep session with the president last week. Six out of nine people present now testing positive. Dont be afraid of it. Reporter as President Trump continues to downplay the severity of the virus, the white house has become a hotbed of infection. His military aide who carries the socalled nuclear football, a president ial valet who serves his meals, plus two more staffers in the press office also testing positive. Now, while hes there in isolation at the white house the president also abruptly killed negotiations on capitol hill for another economic stimulus package. It happened on twitter, part of an all over the map twitter spree. 65 we counted just yesterday alone of those tweets from russia to Hillary Clinton. The president , george, is saying he wants republicans to focus on approving judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court instead. Although they were surprised by the president pulling the plug as well. Okay, cecilia, thanks very much. Michael. And george, we can expect the covid crisis to be at the center of tonights Vice President ial debate with just 27 days to go until the final votes. Were going to go back to mary bruce in Salt Lake City with the very latest. Good morning again, mary. Reporter michael, good morning again. The candidates are hunkered down preparing for tonights debate. With the president s diagnosis and with joe biden, possibly set to become the nations oldest president , voters are looking for reassurance that the vp can step in if needed. Kamala harris and mike pence now just hours away from their first faceoff. And were looking very much forward to the Vice President ial debate. Reporter but this morning, new questions about the Vice President s safety after white house adviser Stephen Miller tested positive. His wife, katie miller, is pences Communications Director and she was traveling with him in utah, but after her husbands diagnosis, she was abruptly sent home. Shes tested negative the past two days. The white house insists the Vice President is safe to debate, but pence was seen here at what is now being called a superspreader event, that rose garden ceremony. Sitting right in front of senator mike lee who shortly after tested positive. The candidates will now be at a greater distance more than 12 feet apart, but the harris team also wants these plexiglas barriers to remain in place. Initially the pence team mocked the request, but overnight, changing their tone saying, if such a barrier is critical for the harris team, then were not going to let it stand in the way. Now, the hurdles for this debate pale in comparison to the challenges for next weeks president ial debate. The president still covid positive is promising his supporters he will be there to debate, but overnight, joe biden drawing a new line saying that there will be no debate until the president tests negative and is rid of this virus. Organizers are telling us this is really just all up in the air and all depends on the president s health. Michael. Time will tell. Thank you so much for that. Well have full coverage of the Vice President ial debate tonight, george will be anchoring with our Political Team. It starts at 8 00 p. M. Eastern, robin. All right, michael. This morning we are also celebrating the life of johnny nash, the singer songwriter of that wonderful charttopping hit that youre listening to right now. I can see all obstacles in my way oh, yes. Amy, i feel like weve talked about dishwashers in the past. This time its all over this photo. Over the weekend ina shared a picture of her dishwasher on instagram and she writes, if youre not sick of unloading the dishwasher, could you please come over and unload mine . But it wasnt the caption that got people talking. It was how she puts everything in there. Were talking knives, a wooden spatula, all clad cookware. One person writing and many did, one person writing i cannot believe what im seeing, knives and all in there. I thought that was a big nono. To which ina replied, i do it many times a day and some are 40 years old. Well, guys, if its good enough for ina, its good enough for me. One thing she says she wont put in there, cast iron pans. New tech that may help detect signs of covid around the country, could be a new tool in the fight against the pandemic. Janai norman with the latest. Reporter gma with an exclusive look at a new device said to be able to track coughs, sneezes and fever in the classroom. Teaming up with engineers and epidemiologists, clorox, the Company Famous for bleach and wipes, taking us along for its first test run in a classroom. How can it pinpoint coughs and sneezes . There is a microphone in the device, and it is trained to look at the unique frequencies that are coughs and sneezes. The temperature is monitored with a thermal sensor. Reporter at this empty Elementary School in new jersey, researchers showed us how they say this illness Symptom Tracker works. To replicate real coughs and sneezes, researchers played audio files and staff used heated blankets and hand warmers to imitate fevers, all tracked on this dashboard accessible by computer. So it says 109 coughs and sneezes detected. Three High Temperature readings. This device time and time again is able to detect coughs and sneezes in the classroom. All along this is a race between us and the virus and any tool that we can use to give us a head start can really help. Reporter with the help of epidemiologists clorox says they determined the point at which teachers should take notice of possible illness in the classroom depending on size and other factors. For example, if a class of 24 students reaches 66 total coughs and sneezes in a sevenhour period, an alert email is sent to administrators, but experts caution that just tracking symptoms wont catch all cases of covid19. One of the great challenges and mysteries of covid is that people can be asymptomatic and still have covid. That means no cough, no sneeze, no runny nose, no fever. Reporter and while clorox is looking for 100 schools across the country to participate in a trial run of this device, other schools are turning to different technology. One houstonarea School District dispatching specialized cameras that the district says can take the temperature of up to 30 people at a time capturing readings while Students Walk into school or down hallways and motorola recently introduced an ai program it says can help schools by calculating the distance between people and monitoring building capacity. The software also aiming to track mask compliance. Florida Atlantic University confirming to abc theyre exploring using this technology in hightraffic areas on campus like the library. And as far as privacy concerns clorox says its device does not record audio or any data that could identify students. Robin . People were concerned about that, janai, thank you. Well, actually i knew that there was something with me, not so much her, because, you know, the love, the being in love is new but loving her as a soul, ive done that from the beginning but when i heard that song, what it said to me was that is what im looking for. That is the missing ingredient. I absolutely want to be caught when i cant fake it anymore. I absolutely want somebody to see me and that was when i knew i was fully in love when i felt fully seen and fully accepted. Probably for the first time in my life. Catch me. I know what you just said, niecy, i want to get clear, who caught who . Who caught who here when you said catch me . Come on, jess. Im definitely caught. I believe that would be me. Oh, i love that and, you know, there are people that are watching and hear you being your authentic self. Both of you, what is your message for someone who is struggling to go into their authentic selves no matter what that is, whats your advice . Man, i guess we just say to each other all the time and that is that when you live in your truth is when youre the most happy. You are. Right . And free, and free. And theres nothing like that i mean, you know, you can get caught up in what other people think if you want to but the main thing is what you think and how you feel in your being and we feel so satisfied and so happy and we just you see it. You see it. Well, you know, i got to tell you, jess, when niecy gave me a call some time ago and i didnt know that it was leading to marriage, but just ive known niecy for a long time and have never seen her happier or more herself and its a beautiful thing to witness and the video is as well. So just what are your plans going forward, both of yo we are actually trying to find a place where both of our art intersects, so were working on Something Like that right now. We dont want to be too premature about exactly what it is, but we definitely have our own endeavors but some things in the works. She got her thing, i got my thing but we want to have a thing together too. Its morning tv, its morning tv. I know youre in new orleans but it is still morning tv. But wishing you all just nothing but love and happiness and thank you for sharing that with us. Blessings to you. We love you and thank you, robin. You held our confidence for a long time so. I did. Were here with fareed zakaria, former anchor from cnn and the Washington Post out with ten lessons for a postpandemic world, his new book. Welcome back to gma. I do want to talk about the postpandemic world but were still in the thick of it right now. The president battling covid. Its spreading through our capitol. What do you think the world makes of this . I know some intelligence officials are warning that our adversaries could try to take advantage of this chaos. Well, absolutely could because what the president seems to forget is we are in the midst of a raging global pandemic. The worst in a century. He says dont let covid dominate your lives, well, how do you make that not dominate your life when its the largest event in several decades . This is the most consequence shall event bigger than 9 11 and bigger than the financial crisis and not done yet. We may have covid fatigue but the virus does not. But you also say its an opportunity. Explain that. Well, look, you always learn as a human being, as a country, as a company, you learn from failure and the first thing we need to understand is we have failed. We have failed at tackling covid and we can learn how to do it better and the best way to do that is look at people who got it right. First acknowledges we screwed this up. Its not just trump, this has been a large systemic failure but from that lesson you can then start to ask yourself what can you do better . We are not still in the learning mode because were still in the denial phase. I know you write its not all President Trumps fault but youre pretty tough on President Trump in the book as well. Can you imagine this country doing the things we need to do if hes reelected . No. I think that President Trump is in denial. I think that part of it is also, george, and i talk about this in the book, you have had a movement for the last 30 years that says government is bad, the federal government is the problem. The federal government is a source of all evils. You have people like Grover Norquist saying we want to get the federal government so small we can take it into a bathtub and drown it. Well, if youre trying to drown and starve and destroy the federal government, guess what, when you have a pandemic its not going to work very well. Your final lesson is something of a paradox. Sometimes the greatest realists are idealists. Well, i think if you look at the people who changed the world in the 1940s and 50s, franklin roosevelt, harry truman, Dwight Eisenhower they were idealistic about what they wanted to do, build a United Nations and create nato and the world health organization, unicef and in doing all that, in imbuing the world with in idealism they really did change it. You havent had a major war between the great powers in 75 years. Youve had a world of peace and prosperity and i think what donald trump represents in some ways is a rejection of that grand, broad, bighearted american tradition of engagement with the world of generosity and of openness and i think its also unrealistic because we did change the world. We can do it again. We just have to learn the right lessons. Fareed zakaria, thanks very much. Ten lessons for a postpandemic world is available right now. Lets go to ginger. Thank you, george. For all of us. We are back now on gma with a chance to bring authentic chinese cooking into your home. Thats right. Jason kang, ceo of xian famous foods made a success out of cooking chinese food and has a new cookbook. Were excited about that and know you and your family created this empire now of restaurants that started out with just one in 2005. Now you have a dozen. Why was it so important to bring the culture into the cuisine . Yes, thank you, amy. So we actually take great pride in being able to bring culture into our cuisine through our cuisine to the people so one thing thats most rewarding for me when im walking through my restaurants and i see maybe a chinese diner enjoying the food, someone who might know a little about the food already, but, you know, wants a taste of home, eating alongside with people who may never have had the food before and knows little about the culture. To me that means our food is actually, you know, measures up to the standards of people who know about the food but at the same time is accessible to people who want to learn more about the food and the culture. Thats why im actually really excited we have our cookbook to be able to provide more to people. We are going to provide some cooking. Youll show us how to make spicy and tingly beef. You say its all in the noodles. How do you keep them from sticking to your hands, jason . Yes, so the spicy and tingly beef is a very flavorful dish that could stand on its own alone but, you know, carbs is usually paired with proteins and the favorite carbs in xian are the noodles so well serve beef with our hand ripped noodles and so the noodles actually come from the dough which when its mixed to the right consistency and has rested enough its not sticky at all really to the touch and furthermore, when we cut the dough up into smaller pieces for pulling into noodles theyre lathered with Vegetable Oil to keep them from sticking to one another and at the same time keep them from drying and cracking. All right. So jason, youll show us how to pull the noodle. How do we do it . Absolutely. So here we g youre going to take one of these rollers and so you got the piece flat down on the counter like this and just going to roll it flat a little bit so its a little thinner and a little bigger just like that. Now take your hands and pick it up, grab the ends, not too tightly and just just start pulling apart. When youre about shoulder width. Its pretty easy. There you go. There you go. And you guys are doing well. So just start swinging up and down, once its about this length and start pulling it even further apart slowly. Its like stretching at the gym. Dont break theed into. Yeah, dont break the noodles. There you go. Youre showing off. Youre slapping the table and all that. Jason was doing it. So you would take you guys are doing really well. I see you doing really well. Amy, you got it good. So pick up the dough and grab the middle part like here and just kind of rip it apart like string cheese from the middle and becomes this noodle and you can slap it a little bit and drop it right into the water. Got to slap the noodle. Put it in the water. That wasnt bad at all. You guys are doing pretty well. So you talked about spicy and amy always laughs when i call it kingly beef but thats what its called. What are the spices and flavor you put into the beef that will go with the noodle. Oh, yes, well, let me show you over here. So, michael, i have some of that spicy tingly beef simmering. So that is already cooked with the trinity of aromatics garlic, ginger and green onions. And its simmered with spices such as the spicy bean sauce, szechuan peppercorn and red chili pepper powder. Thats what gives it the spicy and tingly taste as we call it. So well take some of this stew, delicious stew here and drop it into our noodles that we just fini finished and then were going to move over here and then were going to add some of this tangy soy sauce and black vinegar mixture. Really good. Yum. Some chili proprety chili oil seeds and chili oil. Tingly, robin. This is so good. It is very good. You mix it and this here gorgeous. Beautiful and tasty and tingly. And tingly, and, jason, thank you so much. Im obsessed with pulling the noodles. Xian famous foods is available tuesday, october 13th. Jason wang, get this recipe on our website at goodmorningamerica. Com. I just broke the noodle. Okay. No matter how far you go the pain is always around the corner.
