A red flag warning takes if he can tomorrow afternoon. We have Live Team Coverage on the fires still burning in napa and Sonoma County. Well begin with laura anthony. Reporter hi, dan, as you can see, were in down calistoga. This is normally where we are seeing the most active part of the fire right now is in areas that is uninhabited and some very steep terrain. Heavy fuel thats difficult to fight fires in. Same old, same old. Ashes, waking up every day. My girlfriend stayed up until probably 1 00 in the morning because the whole pallisades was just flaming. It was. And it is raining ash in down town calistoga right now. There are concerns that winds could cause trouble tomorrow. So firefighters are preparing for a wind event that they say will be very similar to when the fire started over the weekend. Now is the time for firefighters to do a buckle down. Theyre going to get that door shut and try to protect the communities of kenwood, valley of the moon, and the napa valley all way down todownville. And this is near Rob Louis Stevenson park. Look temperature terrain. More than 2,000 firefighters are working the incident. Right now, lets check in with spegser for the very latest. Okay. At the moment the wind is not very strong but we expect that to change over the next 24 hours. It is yoinl degrees. Almost 90 near the fire. It is generally the pattern at the surface but a little easier. We have moderate gets, just over ten miles an hour in some spots. Notice by afternoon, well see gusts up to and above 30milesperhour in many of the locations above 1,000 feet. The winds will be gusty and it will complicate the firefighting. Ill have the complete forecast coming up. Thats not encouraging to hear. Lets turn to Wayne Freedman live in Sonoma Company where theyve been working literally around the clock. And theyre exhausted from working around the clock. Well show what you amounts to a small city in the Sonoma County fair grounds. This is the place where firefighters come to rest. It is their home base from a growing army gathering against what may be that difficult stretch of firefighting tomorrow. In the fire service, people view a day like this as a lull in the middle. Not many big flames. Just the worry that they may return with red flag weather tomorrow. I think people are tired of the new normal. Its not new anymore. Reporter his rig, this crew, just finished 17 Straight Days on the wall bridge fire. Today they committed to 14 more in Sonoma County. And yes, theyre exhausted. Both physically and mentally. We get to see the bad side of things. People losing their homes and all their belongings. You get to see people out doing recovery of bodies and what not. Thats just part of the fire service. This is toil as we approach the peak of fire season, theyre four years into this not so new normal. It means weeks on the road and long shifts of 24 hours. Sometimes more. In terrorireacherous, uncomfort conditions. Most us have been here since the fire started or a few hours after that. The firefighter of the year in 2014. We caught up with him during a short break off highway 12, taking advantage of donated food. How many square meals a day are you getting . Theyre kind of round. They are working so hard. They come back dirty and tired and their eyes are all red. That is a point every firefighter reaches and remembers. A state of being they either learn to deal with or not. Its either a make or break moment. They either tom doing it or keep going the rest of their lives. In other words, its a rite of passage. Not so much a trial by fire but a trial by fatigue. Let me tell you, getting a frist to talk about how difficult this is. About being tired and exhausted. They just dont do it. It is just not who they are, the way theyre made. They do this work. They dont complain. Most fascinating. Abc7 news. Most fascinating and most appreciated, too, wayne. Dr. Joseph castro has been named the next chancellor of the csu system as we reported. It was announced just last week. Today he joins us live via zoom. Thank you for coming on with us. We appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you for the invitation. First, congratulations on this terrific appointment. I know it is very exciting. I want to ask you two quick questions and then well get to some other issues. I believe youre the first person in your family to go to college. Now president of an entire University System. You must be very proud. Yeah. It feels great. Very gratifying to serve so many students like me, first generation to college and to graduate from college. And i want to give back to that generation of students. Thats what inspired me to be chancellor. And what did inspire to you take this particular job at the csu system . What attracted to you this job . A great career opportunity. You took it for specific reasons. I believe it is the most consequential University System in the country. It is the largest. We have the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of almost 500,000 students in california. Me to do this at this important time. I want to ask you a couple questions about covid and black lives matter in a moment. Put those things aside. Talk to me about the challenges you feel the cs you were system is facing besides those two things. What are your priorities . What do you want to accomplish . Well, my priority is to make sure were univerally embraced by everybody in california. I want to inspire our legislators to invest more in our students so we go educate them and they can be part of the next generation of leaders right here in california and beyond. I know youve hit the ground running but you officially start in january. How will this system deal with the coronavirus . What are your priorities and concerns . Well, it has made very good decisions during covid. Theyve been based on the advice of health experts. Weve been predominantly virtual with some inperson courses as needed and theres variation across the 23 campuses. I anticipate that will be the case in the spring. But looking ahead to next summer and fall, my hope is that we can be more, well have more students and faculty and staff book campus. And that will be good for everybody. How big a financial burden is at Home Learning in failure to have toonlts return to the campus in is it a big financial hit . It must be. Yeah. It is. Specially for campuses that have large numbers of Housing Units that are going unfilled and parking and dining, all these kinds of nonprofit, as i would say, sorts of services for the campus. Each of the 23 campuses. It is a significant impact. But that is a temporary thing. When we have students back on campus, well be back to serving them in those ways. Lets talk quickly about what csu system is doing and what you intend to do around black lives matter, racial issues in the country, calls for social justice and reform. How do you see the university fitting into that issue . Well, the cs you were is probably the most diverse public uiversity system in the country. And i think we have a special responsibility to ensure that we support our africanamerican students, faculty and staff. I want to make sure we support africanamericans, and i would like to see an increase in africanamerican students in our system and that will require relationships with k12 schools. Lets talk about the enormous cost and it goes spiraling upwards. Is there anything in the future that may bring costs down for students or will continue in the same trend . Well, im happy to say the csu is a great value. Probably one of the best values in the country. Our too significance 6,500 for a quality education. And thats the case. Over half our students dont pay tuition and the debt levels of our graduates is quite low. I intend to continue that and make our education as affordable as possible. An exciting time for you and the rest. Good luck and well be in touch many times as you go forward. Dr. Joseph castro, named the next chancellor of the csu system taking the reins officially in january. Thank you. Just ahead, were wishing a fond farewell to a friend.
