Australian singer helen reddy won a grammy for her 1972 feminist anthem, i am woman. This morning, her family says in a statement, reddy has passed away at a celebrity care home in los angeles where shes been living with dementia. Helen reddy was 78 years old. Turning now to the race for a vaccine against covid19 and a promising now study about one of the potential vaccines in development. Dr. Ali, thank you for joining us. A new study is out this morning on one of the potential covid19 vaccines and how effective it could be for older people. What are you hearing . This is a very good question, mona. Because im a geriatrician, i see this all the time. Older adults traditionally have a more hard time trying to mount an immune response with a vaccine. Thats why vaccines are not always effective. You see, as we get older, the immune system weakens, we have fewer tcells and less working bcells. So the phase one trial results were published in the new england journal of medicine showing that it does trigger an immune response in older adults, which is a promising sign that the vaccine will indeed work. But this is still a phase 1 study result that were looking at right now. We still have to wait till phase 3 to see if the actual vaccine does work to prevent covid disease in older adults. And dr. Ali, flu season is nearly upon us. And you say youre seeing some concerns when it comes to people getting flu shots. What are you most worried about . Im really worried that a lot of parents are not getting their kids vaccinated for the flu and other normal, routine childhood vaccines. And everybodys afraid of going to doctors offices, which is sort of understandable as were now seeing some cases rise in certain states. But i do want to say that the department of health and Human Services has expanded the pharmacists ability to give vaccines to kids over the age of 3. So you could potentially get the flu vaccine at your local pharmacy now. And also measles and rubella vaccine as well. So there should be no excuse. And more americans have been Drinking Alcohol since the pandemic. Theres new Research Today on why this is such a disturbing trend. What are the Key Takeaways . There were moments where the president was setting up a choice in this election, but they just devolved and they devolved too quickly. The challenge for the president in a place where he doesnt command the stage in a president ial way, hes not getting ahead. Hes down 7 points going into this debate. I think hes probably still down 7 points after it. Yvette . I think this debate was an unmitigated disaster. I think trumps performance has shown me exactly why our country is in the state that were in right now. The fact that weve survived to this point with that kind of leadership i think is amazing. I think joe bidens challenge was, as my grandmother said, dont make sense out of foolishness and make a fool out of you. There was so much foolishness, i dont think there was a way for him to really cut through and have the moments that i think he desired at the top. It was just completely out of control. I think the people who lose are the American People, who are looking for hope, are looking for real direction, are looking for leadership. Joe biden did the best he can, and frankly, out of the gate, he did a much better job. By the end, it was clear that even he was getting unsettled. And i think got a little too hot towards the end, too. I wish he had taken a deep breath. But he had a huge challenge, because donald trump really, really was a disaster, and im really, really afraid for our country. I think the problems that the president had tonight can potentially be fixed. You know, potentially you can turn that heat down a little bit. I think some of the problems i saw from Vice President biden tonight, which quite frankly the president s interruptions kind of saved him from at times, was not seeming on beam, not seeming on the ball, getting numbers wrong, wandering in midsentence, not being able to finish thoughts. Those are things that have to be of real concern with people, because that was some of the concern coming in. So, can that problem be fixed . I dont know, and im sure the biden folks who objectively watched it tonight in the campaign are concerned about that too. So theres work to be done on both sides between now and the next debate on the 15th. One of the things that going into this, people are exhausted by donald trump, and nothing tonight changed their feeling of that exhaustion. If anything they were like, enough, already. I think joe biden had steadier moments, when he looked right in the camera and talked about the American People, their family, their future. When he talked about how to handle covid, what happened in the failure, what weve got to do to turn that around. Its very hard to be steady. That said, he had steady moments, and at no time he also smiled. At no time did either trump smile, look at the camera, talk to the American People about their lives, their future.
