Latest including evacuations is Public Information officer for the napa county sheriffs office, henry, thank you so much for joining us. Pleasure to be on your show, kristen. Thank you for having us. Its a tough time and the work is immense. The fire quadrupling since yesterday morning. Will you give us the latest on the status of the fire fight . I know you work closely with them. Yeah, we work closely together. Cal fire likes to announce that number later in the day. 6,000 acres but you know, that can obviously change. The latest information is the town right arounds or. Ow about f miles, close to about 4,000 people that live there. Also, a small college, Pacific Union college. Thats where the majority of our deputies are right now. Theyre in the town of angin, going up driveways, cutting of gates. Doing everything they can to approach each and every door. They have to knock on the door, whether they see people or animals, a car, theyll go up there to confirm the home is empty and sometimes, clearing a home takes about 15 to 20 minutes. So theres a lot of work involved, but obviously, this is what these deputies are sworn to do. Save and protect lives and were going to do everything we can to make sure people are aware of whats going on. We have received reports of residents without power, other people without wifi access. Its up to us to knock on each and every door. Were getting mutual aid help from other agencies but we need a team effort to confirm that each person , that its time to evacuate and the town of angwin, a similar situation for calistoga last night. How can folks help you . Folks who live in that area that are still in danger in terms of being on your team to ensure they stay safe and your demputis stay safe. What can people do, whats your advice . You know, the first and most important thing is, when you are ordered to evacuate, please evacuate. That means there is immediate danger. There is an immediate threat to life. And when you stay back and say, well, i dont see it, so im going to stay here, thats a problem. A lot of process and research that goes into clearing an area that is a mandatory evacuation or evacuation order. And when people say, well, i dont smell smoke, i dont see fire. I want to stay here, theyre risking their lives, kristen. And we often get calls 90 minutes later saying, you know what . Im trapped. The fire is near my home now. Can you come back and get me . The answer is yes, but it takes time. Precious time away from saving other people, so its all about Early Intervention and going out there and tackling it from afar, and we need the communitys trust. Thats most important thing. We need their trust and when we say evacuate, please evacuate. Thats the best advice that we can give. We do see how quickly this fire has moved so far. Still no injuries or deaths, we hope . No injuries amongst your residents as well as the deputies . No, no injuries from our deputies. No reports of any fatalities the majority in county happen to be the people who were warned to leave the area. So we say yes, not making out of this fire is a strong possibility. However, those who err on the side of caution have a very good chance of making it. Their lives are way more valuable than their property, and we just try to rely on that. We have a few seconds left and also just immediate plan, especially given the could increase. Our plan is to stay on top of things. We want to show compassion. Make sure we reach out to everyone. Keys of that nature. Have the gobags ready, realize the high low siren is not the regular siren. When you hear the high low siren which is a european sounding siren, thats the highlow siren, that means, high low, its time to go. Dont debate, go and seek more information on whats going on and once you get out of there, and when you are evacuating, take the time to go to countyofnapa. Org, we have the best way to evacuate. It may not be your traditional way of leaving the neighborhood. Make sure youre aware of road closures, the best way to get out there in a timely and safe manner. Interesting. All right. The highlow, got to go. Youve done a good job of impressing that upon us. Henry with the napa county sheriffs office, Public Information officer, thank you so much. Folks, we keep evacuations and the latest information. You can see scrolling on the bottom of your screen. If youre tracking that, but right now, the wind is generally light. The fires are still burning, obviously. This is a look at Current Conditions near the fire. 81 degrees right now, 41 relative humidity, whereas yesterday at this time, the relative humidity was down in the teens, 12 or 14 . The wind out of the east northeast at only Miles Per Hour and we hardly have any lea could see surface pretty calm and light in that area. Above 1,000 feet where much of the fire is raging right now. You see moderate to mild gusts, under 10 miles an hour. So thats helpful. Still though, theres a lot of smoke in the air and the fires continue to burn. The 24 hour temperature change. Quite cooler still than this time yesterday and with the smoke rising into the air, not only expecting a decrease in quality but increase in temperatures the next few days. It will get hotter tomorrow and thursday and friday, so that may elevate concern about fires spreading but right now, conditions are fairly favorable for finding and containing the fire. It sounds like the firefighters need to take advantage of the next couple of days. I see the temperatures spiking thursday. Do they also get accompanied by strong winds . Good point. Thats a great question. Glad you asked that, mentioned that. As the temperatures rise the next few days, well see a shift in the wind flow. You know, the last day or so, weve had an onshore flow, bringing cooler weather to the coast. Locations around the bay but as the temperatures increase over the next few days, tomorrow, thursday, friday. Its going to be more of an offshore flow again. Thats going to be warrme drier. And probably an increase in the wind speed. I know often youll go up to that region and youve been to meadowwood many atimes. They suffer from tremendous damage. The famed me. This ones for you. Glass fire is the napa valley landmark. The 60yearold meadowood resort. The building that houses the meadowood three star Culinary Destination has been destroyed. The resort is also renowned vacation destination and plays host to many important events. Joining us now during this difficult time, the managing director of the meadowood estate, david pierson, were so sorry for what happened. Thank you for connecting with us, because we have so many people who care so much about meadowood, so thank you. Whats been destroyed on the property, if you could just give us a sense for what we saw in the video, that the restaurant lovingly known as tram, that building was destroyed, but tell us what has survived . Thats right. We just went on the property the first time this afternoon early this afternoon, mr. Harlan and i, small group, allowed on the property to see the buildings, sheriff took us around and indeed, heartbreakingly, the restaurant, the grill, tennis club and certain parts of that deromb of e lodging buildings were destroyed, but i have to share with you, i was pleased by the number of buildings that survived and the number of trees and the number of hillsides that survived. Its random how they burn. Some were completely devastated and looked like the surfac mars, and that was heartbreaking but a number of buildings including the area and the grill out there and the spa area and the fitness building, a number of the Tennis Courts did survive and the number of the lodging survived. So its really a mixed experience to go up there now. Sometimes words fail to describe how everyone is feeling. But if i may ask you to try, from christopher, the chef of the restaurant of meadowood to the entire staff and everybody, whats going through your mind and emotions right now . The phrase heartbreaking is overused, but this is a heartbreaking moment. And the evidence of that is the overwhelming number of messages were receiving on all channels through text to instagram to word on social media and facebook. Theres so many people through the years have had unforgettable moments, experiences, enjoyed being with friends and family, and have experienced and absorbed what meadowood is to such a degree where so many of us are feeling the loss and the impact of this fire that it is hard to put in words, but its a very heart wrenching experience to go through. Yeah. Could you hear spencer . Hes joining us. Yeah. My heartbreaks for whats happened there. And as you know, meadowood is a plac vyrta ontaff wn this started . I dont wa i dont have the exact number but we had evacuated the property, so there was very small number on the property at the time. Yeah, i guess theres probably no way to even imagine how long it will take you to rebuild and resume. No. At this point, yeah, thats right, at this point, its really impossible. We literally have just stepped on the property this morning for the first time, and so well be working that out, but ill share with you this one moment that i had with mr. Harlan on the phone, the night before last. And we were talking about what had to happen. He wasnt angry or upset. Oo instd so something positive about all of this. I said, thats right. And he stopped and said, in a very serious and intentional tone, this gives us the opportunity to rebuild this better than before. And i loved his enthusiasm and determination and the seriousness with which we are moving towards rebuilding this. Its an amazing place, truly. I mean, it is a destination and a tourism landmark. Talk about how this might impact the region, being sort of the anchor spa resort there and restaurant, and all the workers whose livelihoods depend on it. Well, thats absolutely right. Its going to be a difficult thing to go through, no matter at we doecsehe number of people that come here to stay and visit and to enjoy the facilities on the property. There will be a period of time of transition, how long it will be and what we can offer to the people of napa and to visitors coming, we still cant say, but well do everything we can to bring back meadowood as quickly as we can and again, hopefully, better than before. Remembering and recognizing how important it has been through the years and how important the harlan family wants it to be for years to come, and with regard to employees, our sensitivity and our understanding will go out to them and well do everything we can to protect and work with them and give them the best possible opportunities. No doubt, youve always been a Great Community partner. Inuing. Ne that will be spencer, i know you used to go out there and do your Weather Forecast before the auction napa valley. Terrific event. We know covid put a stop to that already this year, but we believe that you will build it better than ever 1980, actua. Met with bill and the two of them created the idea that it should be a Common Ground for the napa valley. And the first auction was 1981. Ever since, meadowood has been dedicated to that proposition. Its more than an idea, its a commitment and philosophy, deeply held beliefs. Fantastic. Spencer, just looking at that video makes me want to go up there, but i know its going to be a while. But were pulling for you and the entire bay area. David pearson, thank you for r joining us. Take care. Thank you, its a pleasure to be here. Thank you. Well take a short break. When we come back, our attention to the president ial debate tonight. Our preview is next. Lets start with this. Most minds are made up. Not typical undecided voters at this time. How important is the first of three debates then . A lot of people are going to be watching, even if most peoples minds are mengeir min and even if youve got a very small percentage of undecided voters, if its in a state like michigan or wisconsin where the margin is relatively small, that could end up mattering quite a bit. Tonights debate ends up being amplified for a couple of reasons. First, the sheer entertainment value. People want to tune in, they want to see what its going to be like when biden and trump get on the stage together but the second reason is really, this is the only Job Interview youre going to get as an American Voter where youre looking at trump and biden side by side and if youre undecided in some cases or even if youve made up your mind, youre tuning in in some ways to root for your own candidate or root against thesons people are interested in tonights debate. All right. What does each candidate need to do then . Given the latest polling . For joe biden, comes in with a polling lead in key states. His lead has been relatively durable and i think compared at least to four years ago, stronger than where the democratic ticket stood in 2016, so thats the good news. I think for him show hes ready to govern. Theres some truth that really the one thing that could harm biden this evening is if for some reason, he demonstrates hes not competent to be president or demonstrates that somehow the issues that President Trumps been raising about him are for some reason or in demonstration true. Avoid that big gaffe. For trump, he comes in needing a game changer. He needs to change the dynamic. Hes going to press biden often. The problem that trump is going to have is, is he going to be able to do it in a way where he doesnt look like a bully . Is he able to do it in a way where hes asking legitimate questio questi question. If biden ducks them, how does trump prosecute his state . I expect him to talk about the economy. Mostots give him the benefit of the doubt with that. But fundamentally, where this focus is now, requires the president to have some kind of a moment thats going to allow him to change the narrative and change the game. Part of the narrative for him this week is certainly the bombshell over President Trumps taxes, showing he carries a huge amount of debt and essentially avoided paying federal income taxes. How do you think President Trump and mr. Biden will try to shape this particular piece of news . Well, for Vice President biden, hes going to try to come in and tell the story of what that means about donald trump. Look, the details on the deductions and the loopholes, thats less interesting, to most americans. I think that will be most effective for biden will be trying to transpose or compare what trump says he is versus what his tax returns show. I think thats what biden has got to do, prosecute the case in a way thats easy to understand, simple and compelling. For teflon to the president that other candidates have not been able to benefit from. The president has to go by his game plan wh g toddress the of. Why you shouldnt believe it. What do you think about the fact there wont be realtime Fact Checking by the moderator, chris wallace, fox news . It goes to the role of the moderator in this kind of debate. I think Chris Wallaces position, the position of other moderators as well, im here to ask the questions. The folks tell the story and afterwards, let the sides duke it out in terms of who won. Even more important than the debate itself is the post debate analysis. The spin both sides engaging in. That will define the narrative and what happened in the debate even more than what actually transpires this evening. The Supreme Court going on, amy coney barrett, making the rounds on capitol hill today, hoping for a rapid confirmation, of course. How do you think this will all factor into tonights co to be big part of the conversation. I think youll hear Vice President biden talk about some of the procedural issues that the republicans have engaged in, the fact it will impact issues Like Health Care and abortion. Thats really where the democrats want to take this conversation, and President Trump is going to use the opportunity to remind his electoral base, on a very important promise, which is remaking the federal judiciary. When all is said and done, installing conservatives on the Supreme Court and in lower courts as well. I expect President Trump to emphasize that tonight to bring home, maybe, some voters that might be uncomfortable with him otherwise. U n wat President Trump and joe biden face off right were back. Thank you so much for joining us on this interactive show, getting answers. Hopefully you got new information with the wildfires, evacuations and conditions as firefighters work to contain it.
