Following a 60hour shift, an offduty south bay firefighter jumps into action, saving the home of loved ones in santa rosa. Heatwave setting records today. Ill let you know when relief will arrive. And that breaking news, Governor Newsom has just declared a state of emergency in na napa, sonoma and shasta counties for the explosive wildfires burning out of control tonight in wine country. It all comes along with a mandatory Evacuation Order for the entire city of calistoga. Here is where the glass fire is burning right now in napa and sonoma counties. It scorched more than 36,000 acres and is still zero percent contained. Now take a look at the evacuations in napa county. You can see the city of calistoga is fully in the blue area which means mandatory evacuations. Yellow means an evacuation warning. We have Live Team Coverage. We begin with kate larsen who is in calistoga tonight. Kate . Well, dan, thats right there. Is fire burning on the south and southwest side of calistoga, as well as the east. And that is what youre looking at right now. This is the area of concern for firefighters, because all that stands between those flames that youre looking at right now is this vineyard and the silverado trail which were standing on. [ siren ] as police evacuated calistoga, an army of fire engines moved into town as a fire quietly burned on a not so distant hillside. This afternoon around 2 00, it was like 30foot flames came over the hill. Reporter calistoga residents stacey and john murphy held back tears since they evacuated with their dog and car full of belongings. We have four friends who have lost houses today. So its really horrible. Reporter napa county buses lined up on lincoln avenue and circulated through the city to pick up stranded evacuees. Downed cell phone towers made it difficult to get emergency alerts out to residents. The headers will go out. But the body which has the content, telling people where to go, the routes to take is being challenged right now. Reporter south of calistoga in st. Helena, meadowood caught fire. Much of the fivestar resort famous for weddings like derek jeter in flames. Firefighters to pull water from the swimming pool, but much of the property was too far engulfed to save. Right next to the pristine still perfectly green golf course is this, meadowoods michelin star restaurant reduced to rubble. We were able to put it out. Unfortunately, the water system, the tanks got destroyed. Reporter captain with the apple district in Southern California has been hopping from fire to fire up through california for the past eight days with his crew. How many hours have you been working . To be honest, i dont even know what time it is. Reporter by he gets rest on tuesday theyll have been up working about 50 hours. Another exhausted fire crew out of hemet. When i signed up for it, i knew this is what i was getting into. I couldnt imagine anything else. Best job in the world. Reporter all right. Thank you so much to all our firefighters. The good news out here, there is essentially no wind. The flames have been watching them for the past hour and a half do look like theyre laying down, and firefighters confirm that those flames are moving slowly. The bad news out here is the communications issue. There is no internet. I can confirm that. And even Text Messages and calls can be tricky. Thank you very much. In Sonoma County, weve just learned Santa Rosa City schools will cancel all online classes through wednesday because of the fires and the evacuations. At least 68,000 Sonoma County residents are under Evacuation Orders tonight. Here is a look at the mandatory evacuation zones. They are in orange. The yellow area, again, is the evacuation warnings. Abc7 News Reporter jr stone continues our Live Team Coverage tonight in the skyhawk neighborhood of santa rosa where, jr, there has been some tremendous loss. There certainly has, dan. And you can see the damage out here this evening in that skyhawk neighborhood here in santa rosa. It is homes burned early this morning. But there is positive news tonight. The wind has died down. Not even much of a breeze tonight. And we dont have any reports this evening of any additional homes that have burned this evening. A flame shooting out of a home that had previously burned in the skyhawk neighborhood of santa rosa. A hot spot flaring up monday night less than 24 hours after the destruction occurred. Its unfortunate what were going through. Reporter smoke and flames still in sight of the skyhawk neighborhood where burrows lives. He stayed at his house, and monday morning he witnessed the homes across the street burning. His home was spared, but others not so lucky. Monday afternoon, the attention switched to the trioniannandale state park. Crews in the midst of a controlled fiveacre burn. Using fire to fight fire. We have to do that a lot, especially with the conditions weve been dealing with lately. Reporter firefighters say winds died down monday, allowing them to burn this area and do so with no problems. While homes like these did burn monday morning, we werent alerted to any additional houses that burned monday evening in santa rosa search at just some good news for the more than 68,000 people evacuated in Sonoma County. Kind of been here, done that before. We got out of here a little quicker than before. But it seems like its becoming a pattern. We dont want to have to get too adept at this evacuation stuff. The location that youre looking at right there, a neighbor across the street tells me those folks who live there had only been there for three weeks. But, again, positive news tonight in the fact that the winds have died down. Not even feeling a breeze at this time. Reporting live in Sonoma County, jr stone, abc7 news. Now the Sonoma CountySheriffs Office says it has a zero tolerance policy for anyone being in an evacuation zone who shouldnt be there. This afternoon, a 17yearold boy was spotted hopping over a fence in santa rosa. Deputies determined he had no legal reason for being there, cited him and released him to his parents. The dry winds fanning the flames are expected to calm down tonight, dan. That is such great news, dion. Lets check in with sandhya patel for a look at the current conditions. And sandhya, lets hope that the winds stay calm. Yeah, dan and dion. It looks like the conditions will be favorable tonight for the firefighters. Take a look at the conditions near the glass fire. It has cooled down to 71 degrees. Humidity is creeping up, 30 right now. And the winds, as jr mentioned, really light. I mean, almost nonexistent when you have a northeast wind to 3, considering how gusty it has been in that area. Now the temperatures for the week ahead, its still going to be hot. Low to upper 90s for the next four days. Cooler weather with upper 80s to mid80s later on this week heading into the weekend. Today we had a recordsetting temperatures today. 101 with this heatwave in san jose. 96 in oakland. 96 sfo. 98 was a tie at redwood city. Plenty hot in fairfield. Napa 100 degrees. 94 in san francisco. Now take a look at the winds around the hills. Gusts down to nothing at atlas peak. Humidity is coming up. As you will notice, across many areas where they were in teens and Single Digits inland, now coming up. So favorable conditions, but will it last . The owner, dario sattui says its his Worst Nightmare come true. His employees grabbed hoses to try to put out the flames, but the loss is significant. Our offices are gone. The wine is all destroyed. The main building, the castle did not burn so far. So far. Luckily, the 13th century inspired tuscan manor on the property has survived. Some of the Sonoma County evacuees were sent to the sonoma marin fairgrounds in petaluma. The site was transformed overnight from a covid testing site to a shelter. About 160 evacuees from a Senior Living facility in santa rosa are staying inside the buildings. We found one man who thought one of his friends was among the evacuees and he wanted to help. Thats where the zogg fire is being blamed for killing three people. Flames have burned nearly 49 square miles in the mountains west of redding. 1200 people remain under Evacuation Orders right now. Cal fire says there is zero percent containment. The glass fire in the north bay tripled in size today to 36,000 acres. There is no measurable containment at this moment. Cal fire is reporting that 113 structures have been destroyed. Another 8500 structures are still threatened right now. Thousands of people are under mandatory Evacuation Orders. The glass fire is burning in napa and sonoma counties, areas ravaged by fire over the past several years. The area in red on this map here shows you exactly where its burning. For some perspective, this map also shows you where the lnu complex fire burned in the area thats brun along lake berryessa. It started august 16th and has burned 363,000 acres and is now 98 contained. Now one more to show you on this map. This area in green right here is the 2019 kincade fire that burned 78,000 acres last october. The areas in black you can see here that burned in 2017 in three devastating blazes, the atlas, nuns and tubbs fires. You can see those fires completely surrounded the glass fire. As wildfires rage across california, there is no question firefighters are being pushed to the limit. One south bay firefighter coming off a 60hour shift ended up racing to santa rosa so sa to help save his parents home. Offduty san jose firefighter grant turned into this area and knew he had to act quickly. His girlfriend parents home not far, being threatened by fire. I drove straight up to their house. And i was just going to hang out and triage it and basically move anything flammable away from it. Reporter newnon had his gear in his car coming off a 60hour shift. Soon enough fire engine 3 arrived. We geared up and put down some hose lines. And the fire front came up over the hill. And it was it was quite the battle. Just ember, high winds. Reporter he says engine 3 fought as if they were working to save their own homes. After a handshake and a simple thank you, they were off to the next scene. He says they are the heroes. No doubt those on the fiery frontlines havent had much time to rest with resources stretched thin. All right. I got to get out of here, because its raining ash. Reporter dangerous conditions continue to fuel california wildfires. Last year that was the worst and then the next year is the worst one. Its incredible. Right now i want to show you a time lapse from our mount tam cam. The winds have switched direction. Earlier tonight we had a southerly surge develop. You see that fog pushing back up along the coastline. Also saw a lot of smoke, as you will notice there, because of the glass fire. So look at it from the satellite perspective, and you can see just how far that smoke from the fire is drifting. Not just from the glass fire, but also from the august complex fires. Meanwhile, that southerly surge coming right up the coast, bringing the fog and the higher humidity into our area, and air quality is changing because of the sea breeze. We now have good to moderate air quality across the region. Earlier tonight, we already had poor air quality in places like santa rosa. Seeing a slight change in our air quality right now. As we head into tomorrow afternoon, the smoke will settle. So tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon, still a lot of haze and smoke which is why we still have air quality concerns. But tomorrow night, it looks like a stronger sea breeze will begin to push some of the smoke out of the region, at least going into the first part of wednesday. Air qualities, spare the air tuesday through friday. Unhealthy for the north bay. Poor for the rest of our region, right on through the next several days. Temperatures right now holding on the warmth from earlier in the day. 60, 70s along the inland and bayside communities. Look at the coast. Talk about going from 90s to 50s in san francisco. So you are definitely noticing a change. Tomorrow up to 20 degrees cooler. Here is why. Golden gate bridge showing a very thick veil of fog. Areas of dense fog and mist. Cooler coast and bay. Hot inland tomorrow and poor air quality through friday. So here is a look at live doppler 7, and the fog is right near the beaches. Visibility down to a half a mile in half moon bay, which is a concern. The hourbyhour forecast will show you the fog pushing in over parts of the bay by tomorrow morning. And well have a little mist and drizzle for the morning commute, and then the fog will just hang around near the coast. Temperatures anywhere from the low 50s to the upper 60s. Mildest readings will be inland tomorrow afternoon. Youre looking at hot weather in the south bay. Not as hot as today. 98 in gilroy.
