A massachusetts teen and his parents now face charges for hosting a party which led to his high school being shut down. Dozens of student s attended the september 11th gathering outside boston without masks. It forced their principal to switch their school from in person to Remote Learning until next week. The superintendent said the party showed a lack of precautions to protect against the spread of covid. New questions being raised about how a potential covid19 vaccine may be distributed. It comes amid new confusion from the government about the spread of the coronavirus. I spoke earlier with dr. Ryan ribiera. The cdc has created more confusion after issuing new guidance about how the coronavirus spreads through the air, and then retracting the guidance, saying the update was posted by mistake. Walk us through this. Its very frustrating, certainly. All of the indications, though, that i have seen point towards it actually being an error in the scientific review process, not some type of more nefarious political motivation. But unfortunately it really is a bad topic to make a mistake like that on the degree to which airborne transmission is an issue with coronavirus, hotly debated since the very beginning. Obviously the implications of airborne transmission is a bigger concern than we thought, really significant. So its just unfortunate to send mixed messages around this. Weve gotten mixed messages before from federal departments, and it really doesnt help. Were learning more about how a potential covid19 vaccine will be distributed, and were hearing children wont be eligible right away. What are you learning . We know for certain that when the vaccine is ready to go demand is going to far outstrip supply, so were going to have to make decisions about how those early doses are administered. I think, frankly, at the pace that these trials are progressing, by the time those early doses are ready, we might not yet have enough safety data for children. And so when you balance that against the fact that children are less likely to have severe outcomes from covid, the risk benefit ratio for them, it really might not make sense in those early days. But that could change between now and the spring. Back at the start of the pandemic, we heard about a major shortage of n95 masks for Health Care Workers to protect them from the virus. Six months now now, theres still a shortage. Why is this and how much of a concern is it as we head into flu season . Theres a few things going on. One, covid cases really havent dropped that much. Theyre still going wrong. Theyre probably going to go into the winter. The demand and the need have continued to be very high. Also, i think the supply that we have is not really very strategically distributed. We have states and even individual hospitals with huge stockpiles, then other places you have people going an entire week on the same n95. So we really need some direction from the federal government in terms of funding for increased production, but also some coordination of our National Supply chain.
