California saw its total go up by 3,300 today to more than 746,000. In the bay area, there are more than 95,000 confirmed cases of covid19. A new study find that covid19 can spread among Young Children. Both at Childcare Centers and to their parents. Dr. Patel joins with us more on this study. This looked at children at utah Childcare Centers. The kids passed the virus to people outside. Isnt that right, dr. Patel . Thats correct. And this basically was a i had to in utah. Looking at three childcare kreshlts. There was an outbreak. What is really concerning about this, we want people to understand. These kids on average were under the age of 10. We already know children above the age of 10 can trags mit the virus but this shows it can go as young as 8 months old and cam trags m transmit it with or without symptoms to parents and others. If this happened at a few Childcare Centers, were keeping that in mind but also at a time we know the bay area is starting to get waivers for elementary schools. So you have kindergarteners, not too much older than those. And you have Childcare Centers open here. What does that mean for us as we reopen . What do we need to be mindful of . I think the Key Takeaways with regard to what we can do to prevent the spread, first we know it can happen. So just because youre a young child or a child doesnt have symptoms, that doesnt mean they cant pass it on. So thats something to take into account. This is underscoring the importance of isolating and getting tested if youre around anyone else who may be positive. Two of these outbreaks in these facilities were caused by people hw worked at the Daycare Centers who had someone infected at home. They themselves didnt have any symptoms. They wore a mask. But they were able to go in and spread to it other children and people working there because there is pre symptomatic spread. So thats really important that people need to Pay Attention to. Again, we need to have a lot more available testing. If you are exposed, if someone is around you who is positive, you should be able to go out and get a test immediately. You could be spreading the disease before you even know you have it. Despite these cases, is there still evidence suggesting that children are a little less likely when theyre that young to be the vectors . To be the ones who transmit it to others and to be really sick if they do get it . A few things to break down there. So off the top. Yes. We have data showing that children are less likely to get a severe illness or wind up in the icu and die. We know children can get the raretoea chdren a less like toet sicchdren are s or b, chiln cant transmit it. We keep hearing this. Getting infected and getting sick different than transmission. I dont have a clear number to say Young Children more or less likely to transin it virus based on their viral load. We do know that Young Children can carry as. Virus in their bodies as adults can and older children can spread it at the same rate as adults. So people shouldnt Pay Attention to the age of a child and say youre more or less likely to spread the disease. Remember, in this specific survey, an 8monthold passed coronavirus on to both of their parents. The 8monthold had mild symptoms and did fine so all Young Children can spread this around. At months old. That was very eye opening. Thank you for the information. Appreciate it. Thank you. Thanks. A great interview as always. And a new poll shows the pandemic is taking a harsh toll on americas young adults. The latest Covid Response tracking study found adults under the age of 35 are more likely to experience negative feelings or stressrelated symptoms than any other age group. According to the poll, 56 of young adults say theyve isolated themselves or felt isolated in the last month compared to 40 of Older Americans perhaps because Older Americans have experienced more down turns and strange times in their lives. Been through it all. Weve been having a strange time with the skies lately. Thats true. It looks like we have a few more days of spare the air, right . Yeah. We are still seeing the impacts of the smoke. And one of the biggest problems is we dont have strong winds to mix up the atmosphere. Let me show you what it looks like right now. You would think this is fog. Its a thick blanket of smoke across the region. As we look at the temperatures, the sun has been trying to beam through the smoke and the haze and the fog. 80 in santa rosa, 84 in livermore. It did warm up. A live look from our exploratorium camera and we are seeing fog and smoke. Well call it smog. San jose, 64 degrees in half moon bay. The air quality, everybody here locally in the red and the purple indicate under healthy to very unhealthy air. As we heard earlier, best to avoid exposure. Not go outside to work out. Stay inside to avoid this. You can see how far the smoke has traveled. You will notice it moving toward the tahoe area. It is pretty much everywhere you look because there are fires burning up and down the west coast. You can see the forecast here. The magenta is some of the worst air quality. The hot pitching thenk there. We do have multiple fires burning but the good news is, if this model is right, and im not saying it is always right, enough of a sea breeze on sunday afternoon, evening, could push that smoke out of our region a little bit so we may see enough of a shift that we may see better air quality. Stay tuned. Live doppler showing smog around the region. Temperatures up 18 degrees. Despite that we have fog. Look, the golden gate bridge, the tower is visible. It wasnt like that earlier. Smoke impacts through the weekend. Spare the air the next three days and temperatures will remain below average. Tomorrow morning, starting off with the fog as we go into the afternoon and evening. The summertime fog lingering will continue. The temperatures first thing in the morning will be in the low 50s to the upper 50s. Highs in the low 60s to the 80s. 72 in oakland. 82 in livermore and 84 degrees in antioch. Smoggy tomorrow, we are looking at temperature slowly inching up. Going to low 90s. It certainly looks like even the smoke impacts will continue monday. The winds may bring us better air quality. Maybe even a slight chance of some drizzle or showers. Thats what we need. Thank you very much. The future of jobs in the bay area with so many jobs going remote. Is this still the best place for employees . In new york city, separate ceremonies to honor those killed that day at the world trade center. A change prompted by the pandemic. Families were allowed to gather but for the first time, not to read the names of their loved ones due to a lack of social distancing. That prompted a separate event nearby where family members did read the names of the nearly 3,000 people killed. Bells tolled near shanksville, pennsylvania, to remember those killed on this day including the 44 who lost their lives aboard united flight people in which was bound for San Francisco. The flight went down in a field after passengers led by several from the bay area stormed the cockpit. A small group of dignitaries joined in silence at the pentagon memorial. 184 people were killed at this site when American Airlines flight 77 from Dulles International to los angeles crashed into the building. And remembering the 9 11 attacks looked very different this year, of course, because of the covid19 pandemic and the bad air quality as well. Amy hollyfield has a look at how that did not stop the San Francisco Fire Department from holding a very moving ceremony. Joseph palmer, patrick reporter the ceremony may have looked a bit different. The emotion was still there. As San Francisco firefighters read the names this morning of all 343 firefighters who died in the september 11 attacks 19 years ago. We read these names to remember and because their lives mattered. Reporter two different threats really changed up how they reynold this year. Because of the bad air quality from the wildfires, the Fire Department moved the ceremony inside and they were alone. p. It was surreal. In the past 18 years, it has been outdoors with a larger crowd. The Fire Department adjusted and provided a live stream of the ceremony on its facebook page. Were all in this and were all vested to make sure this is never forgotten. Because when we forget is when we become complacent. Every San Francisco fire station conducted the ritual this year which included a moment of silence. But most important to those who have taken the oath to protect and serve, the reading of the names. Were not just your San Francisco firefighters. Were not just your San Francisco public servants. Were your friends, your family, your neighbors, and thats what this is all about. Keeping that unity between all of us. Theyre shrouded in smoke but the flags are at halfstaff in San Francisco to remember 9 11. And firefighters are hoping next years ceremony can return to normal. In San Francisco, abc 7 news. And we will heave with you a light display over the pentagon tonight. Well be right back. But as californians well get through this together. Bay area workers are all facing new job realities from new safety protocol to working from home. As part of our commitment to building a better cabrera, this week were looking at our changing workplace and highlighting ways that people are makingt work. As more Companies Give employees the option to work remotely, they could find their pay could be reduced. David louie continues our week long coverage with a look at the impact on compensation. Reporter pay scales are undergoing change. San franciscos lab is a good example. It builds itself as the largest all Remote Company with 1,100 people working from 65 countries. It has no offices but does hold inperson events like this. Four years ago it developed a calculator that factors in pay variations that take into account where people are working. We collect databased on candidate feedback and team mental feedback to be able to make data driven iterations. Reporter the calculator is public so milkants and current employees can see how say that determined. Another San Francisco company says the motivation behind employees working remotely is not to save money in a lower cost city. Generally people are not choosing where they want to live based exclusively on money. Theyre looking at where will i be closer to my family. Reporter however, compensation will reflect the availability of qualified applicant in a city, not the of the could of living, leaving San Francisco for example could mean a pay cut. With the people who asked about changes to compensation for remote work, every person who asked has still chosen to relocate. So it ends up being better for them. Reporter the calculator reflects review for the job market. As part of this remote work, theyll do the practices and companies can see what is successful, what is working, not working and be able to implement that. David louie. Abc7 news. Lets continue this conversation now with randall, a regional Vice President from robert half, a Staffing Agency with more insight. Thank you for coming on. Reporter my pleasure. Nice to be here. Are you seeing a lot of people leaving the bay area these days . Reporter were seeing people leave the bay area. I wouldnt say its a lot of people leaving the bay area. But one of the things thatprev here to stay. So there is a give and take here. One example of that is a friend of mine i was speaking with, a colleague two days ago. And i am, gosh, where is your new office . It looks different than before. Where are you located . She said im a boat. I get my job done on a boat. There is a lot going on in the work forceful there are people leaving. Some are leaving the state, some are leaving the bay area for many different reasons. I was just, as you mentioned, speaking with someone yesterday for an Alarm Company and she used to live, she has a sister that lives in Southern California and she grew up in the Southern California area. She left for texas. Asked how do you like it, she goes, i love the of the could have living. I love that its affordable. Ive heard from a number of people who say they leave because of job opportunities. Are there more jobs or fewer in the cabrera . There are always more jobs in a place like the bay area which has been such a Technology Central of the world and so innovative and so resilient. Even in times past, as weve had other setbacks. The bay area bounces back strong. It always has. We certainly feel that it still will. Nonetheless, the remote work force is here to stay and companies are embracing it. Employees are embracing it. So there will be different considerations including compensation as employees decide they warm to live and work elsewhere. But still staying attached to the same company and companies decide how to handle that. Are you suggesting if you move somewhere else with a lower cost living, your salary will go down . Not necessarily suggesting that, although thats one possibility. One of the things we want to keep in mind, we just released a reeawh w found is two cluding things. Nine out of ten bay area hiring managers are very concerned that they could lose their top talent and they know this could be due to the cost living. But on the same token, but job hirers are more informed than ever before because they have access to salary guides such as the one we just published for 2021. Their so well informed that the negotiation is really a negotiation between equals. So lots of jobs in the bay area. Lots of smart, qualified applicants. And as you suggested, treated as equals. Okay, thank you very much. Thank you. For more on the bay areas changing workplace, you can try my 4 mini munchies with marinara or ranch. Back at jack in the box. Time for the four at 4 00. Another day of smoky air for the bay area. The sun was now a familiar orange color once again. If youre keeping count, this is 25th day in a row we have a spare the air day and it doesnt look like it will be getting any better this weekend. Adding to the mix interest was the fog. It doesnt look like well catch a break over the weekend because the spare the air will be extended through monday. Oregon and washington tate as well. Obviously, that makes sense to start here with you. What a strange time. You did a great explanation the other day of why this phenomenon has occurred. I dont remember 25 or 26 spare the air days for some time. I dont either. This will make it 28 straight spare the air days when we head into monday. Thats the longest stretch weve seen. I cant remember a time in monday ray bay of seeing the orangey sky or smoky conditions for days on end. So this is definitely eerie. When you think about how many fires are burning, up and down the west coast from washington to oregon to california, it doesnt matter which way the winds blow. Well get some smoke from the fires. And a lot of them are so large that is making a huge impact on what were seeing here locally. So strange to see. Weve seen so many surreal pictures. Yeah. My daughter kept calling at this time moon today. No, thats the sun. Lyi like sandhya said, i had to ask my dad, was it like this growing up and i blocked it out . Emno. It wasnt like this. It isnt the bay area that i remember and that i loved so much. And i can see why so many people rthing, lets move elsewhere. Dealing with this every single year. Its really tough. Such a sad and strange thing. When kids ask, why is the sky blue, theyre asking why is the sky orange . A new study shows going out to eat is among riskiest things you can do. The cdc tracked more than 300 people who tested positive around the country including california, everyone was asked about going to restaurants, bars and gyms. Adults who tested positive were twice as likely than those who tested negative to have gone to a restaurant i weeettingsick. With that in mine, and knowing San Francisco will resume i am door dining, what do you think . How do you feel about it . You know, i do enjoy eating out. I have to say during this pandemic, it has been so tough to go out. Were hesitant. There are five of us. The last thing we want to expose them to any possible countdown from other people. In that study they dont mention what kind of protocols were in place. The survey that was done and whether the dining involved people Wearing Masks the entire time, until its time to eat and then they take them off or tables were spaced apart. What do you think . Well move on for a second. On a similar theme, earlier in the newscast we told you how the movie experience will be different. It begs the question, will people go back . Indoor theaters are active. The rest are limited to in movies. Some are allucssfu turnts are you looking forward to getting back to the real deal and going to the Movie Theater . I know because you have a young daughter, going to the movies has not been something youve been able to do. Are you looking forward to going back to a Movie Theater . I would give anything to go to a movie just to have feel some urgency. I am in no mood to sit with other people for hours given the risk. It is risk versus reward and its not worth it at this point. Sandhya, would you go to a movie . I agree with ama. Absolutely. I love going to movies but i would not do it. I agree with her one hundred when you consider risk versus reward. I think well stay home. Watch the movies at home. A lot of great movies and options. I think weve all upgraded our systems. Were all coming to your house. Like, an outdoor theater spaced six feet apart. Get toward scream again. The fright movie franchise is making a comeback. The relaunch is set for january 2022. Now, courtney cox will be back as will David Arquette to play dewey. It is supposed to have, cuba gooding jr. Is mopping those confirmed. The plot remains under wraps. The plot will be the similar scary horror movie type. I dont like slasher movies but i le a good horror movie. I love the halloween, the first halloween. No you dont like them before they got too slashy. Or the omen. No . You dont like any of them . I watched those and they gave me night mares. I was checking under the bed. I think it roo i ammed me for life because im not into scary movies at all now. I cant do it. What about you . You know, i dont mind scary movies. I think you escape. Its funny to hear you say that out loud. Psychological thrillers maybe. I hate slasher movies. Thats it for the four earlier i mention that had indoor dining, you are getting massage, haircuts tarks too, gyms, those are opening in San Francisco but dining, probably not until october indoors. At least were moving a little closer. It is very difficult to keep track. Lets move on to some consumer news. Michael finney is here with a look at the headlines. Consumers first complained at the beginning of the pandemic but more than six months later, it seems zobl hand lowered prices all of the time. Now, amazon recommends that you check all of its sellers before you make a purchase. We dont allow people to price gouge in the state you can sell it for any price at all in the state of california.
