Or four or five. Kelly and you dont slice them, right . You just throw them in there. Yeah, you throw them in there. I like a little spice on my fish, so i try a little jalapeno or whatever kind of pepper that you likejust put one or two in there. Kelly i always put more cause i like it really spicy. Little cilantro. Kelly cilantro. Now, again, if you dont like cilantrosome people do not like it. Parsley. Kelly little parsley, parsley. Yep, oregano and. Ryan oh, yeah. Kelly you want fresh oregano, right . Yeah, some pepper. Salt. Sea salti like the sea salt. Kelly coarse sea salt, right . Yep. Now watch; this is the trick. Ready . This is gonna get difficult, ryan. One, two, three. Ryan wow. Done. Kelly one, twowait, what happened after two . Ryan tricky. Three. Kelly three, okay. So put it right right there. Kelly right there. You close it. I like to do, like, medium heat. Its gonna get hot. Its almostwhats great is that you cant burn it. Has all the lemon juice and all the olive oil in a pouch, and, um kelly usually, we run inside and make love while the fish is on the grill. Aboutfor 15 minutes, is usually the best way. Ryan so you cook for two minutes, is what youre saying . Kelly we have eight or ten minutes left over. Ryan two minutes on the grill. Kelly correct. Smoke a cigar after. Kelly exactly. Ryan understood. Kelly so we have one cooked. Should we try it . Yeah, lets try it. Kelly okay, lets try it. Ryan oh, fun. Looks so good and healthy. I love it. Kelly you can go to our website for the recipe. Make sure that you, like, find the freshest fish that you can from your fishmonger. Were lucky on long island. Theres a lot of great, you know, fishmongers that have white, flaky, fresh fish available. So were very lucky here. Look at this beautiful piece of fish. [laughs] um, ooh, thanks, honey. Mmm. How is it . Kelly its delicious. Ryan, i wish you were here. You would ryan i wish i were there too. Kelly mark just ate his earbud. Ryan i wish i were there. He could airplane the fish right into my mouth like that. But its simple. Its healthy. Its clean. Its fun. You can do it as a couple, and you can apparently make love while its cooking. So. Kelly you sure can. [laughs] and you can use the juice afterwards for aadd to it. Whoa, what happened . Kelly i burned my mouth. Ryan well, wheres kelly going . Is she going to spit it out . What happened . Kelly i just burned my mouth. Ryan oh. [laughs] to gogo to our website for the full recipe, as kelly said. Enjoy your taste there, and when we come back, im gonna show you my sliders on a pretzel bun, right after this. Oh. Announcer still ahead on live, its gelmans turn at the grill with his recipe for lamb chops. Say the word, on my way ryan so mark and kelly, its ryan and ryan here for my grilling favorite recipe. We cookout often, like to get on the grill, and everybody likes a good burger, but its not about a big burger. Its about a slider, right . A smaller burger so you can actually have different burgers, different buns with different toppings. Sunday mornings, i like to go to the farmers market. And when i go to the farmers market, i get all my toppings for the burgerfresh tomatoes, some sprouts, some radishes, the little pickles, the bibb lettuce. And of course, the burger, its ground, lean turkey, a little egg inside, a couple of spices. You know, if you want chives in there, put some chives in there. But the key is to make em small, so it almost looks like a little cookie, you know, like little cookie dough. Make your burger. Put your burgers on the grill. I tend to use my bare fingers because im the only one here eating. Put em on there. I do medium, off, and medium also known as mom on the grill, mom. So the burgers will cook. Kelly mom. Ryan to yourmomto your liking, and then when you finish with the burger, bring it off. Now here, you can see i have different buns. I premy favorite bun is the pretzel bun, and theyyou can buy these at storeslider pretzel buns. You take your pretzel buni put goat cheesea little goat cheese on there. Then i like to put my tomato, i like to put on thei actually like raw onions. Some people wanna grill the onion, you know. You can grill the onion as well. The lettuce. And then of course you top it with the bun. Now on the other side, i put some spreads onnot your typical spreads. I make an artichoke aioli, which well put the recipe on the website. I then take a little awhich is here. Artichoke aioli. And then i spread not just mustard, but horseradish and mustard. I mix them together for a better flavor. Kelly yes. Ryan and then i like a natural ketchup. Kelly it needs the heat, the spice. Yes, yes, yes, yes. Ryan it needs all that, right . So then you spread it all together. The idea is that youthe idea is that you cant get your mouth around it, right . So its only a good slider if it cant fit into your mouth. So this is perfect. I live by that saying as well, ryan. Kelly [laughs] ryan how do you know when its a good slider . When you cant fit the whole thing in your mouth. Delicious. And the key, guys, are these spreads. Put your favorite cheese on there, but the aioliartichoke aiolis amazing, better than mayonnaise, and the horseradish with the mustard. And then the idea isas you know, kel, i love to eatso you can have four or five, six of these with no guilt. And that, my friends is how kelly four or five, six of them. Ryan thats how ryan and ryan like to grill together on labor day. Well be right back after this. Kelly well, thank you, ryan. That is a dream. Yum. Ever go without Watermelon Sugar high announcer if youd like to try any of todays labor day cookout recipes, just long on to our website at kellyandryan. Com. Kelly listen to this. Everybody at home, get your pens and paper, or get your hand and your imaginary penyour fingerand write this down because lives labor day cookout would not be complete without gelmans worldfamous according to himlamb chop. Gelman thats right. Kelly gelman, show us your chops. Gelman here they are, right over here ryan wow, lollipops. Gelman oh, theyre really these are nice. You know, my secret is the rack of lamb. Buy it half price at costco. Great lamb, very tasty. I cut the fat off the back, throw em on the grill. I use berbere spice. Let me tell you whats in that chili powder, paprika, cayenne, onion powder, ginger, cumin, cardamon, fenugreek, garlic, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves. Its very exotic. Im gonna put it on my instagram and on our website. But i take these chops like this, i put a lot of stuff on them, i throw em on the grill, cook em till theyre tender, eat em like lollipops. Done labor day, perfect day. Ryan do yougelman, do you marinade them . Gelman i do not. Its just a rub, and i put a lot on because i love flavor. My philosophy is more is more. Ryan your philosophy is more is moreokay. Kelly gelman, they should name a sectionthey should name the meat section of costco after you. Gelman yes, it should be the gelman meat section. Exactly. Kelly thats right. Ryan gelman, you are a master on the grill. That looks very good for breakfast this morning. Well done, and youre good at a segment on tv too. Not bad. Well be right back with more live after this. Closed captioning sponsored in part by ryan welcome back. So great to see you, mark. Thanks for being here today. Kelly, big news for us. Well be back tomorrow, not only back live, but back in our studio tomorrow. Kelly [laughs] [laughs] kelly okay. Ryan imagine that. How will we do the show in the studio . So thats tomorrow. Kelly you know what . I have no idea, but i cant wait to find out. Itll be good to see you, ryan. Kelly we will see you tomorrow. Ryan have a safe and fun holiday. Yeah, well see you tomorrow. Today on tamron hall were honoring the heroes helping us win the covid19 battle and those we lost to the pandemic. Its a celebration of the nurses, advocates, mothers and more right now on tamron hall. Welcome to tamron hall from my home. Today we are meeting heroes of the pandemic, many who have been on the front lines at hospitals across this country aroundtheclock caring for patients with covid19. They are the nurses and Healthcare Workers with their own families putting their lives on the line for us and the jobs they love. Pamela orlando was one of those healthcare heroes who lost her battle with coronavirus just over 3 weeks ago. She died in the hospital where she worked for 14 out of the 30 years she spent on the job. Up until her final days, pamela secretly made a video diary documenting her illness every step of the way. This is just the beginning. Im trying to do a diary to see what the symptoms are. Today i have a fever that i cant get rid of, but i am resting comfortably in my bed. We found out that my mother was sick because she woke up one morning that she actually had off from not working at the hospital, and she said she had a headache and that she felt weird, and she told me and my brother to get out of the house immediately. Boy, do i feel like crap, back pain, fever that wont break. Today is not a good day. I cant even move without being short of breath. My mother was so strong that even on her. The day before she was ventilated, she was able to record herself and to really just document everything that was happening with this virus is really astonishing, and im just so amazed that she had enough will to do that. And im not Getting Better yet. Please pray for me. Our last conversation was that i loved her. We just kept. She couldnt really speak all that much, but she was saying that i love you, and i said, i love you, to her back and that everything is going to be okay, and that was really the last conversation we had. My mother told me and my brother to stay strong. She prepared us for the worst, and if something ever happened to my mother, she wanted me and my brother to keep moving forward and to keep progressing in life and making her proud because thats what she would want. Pamelas son, reid, joins us from the familys home in new city, new york. Reid, in that video, which obviously ive watched and watched again, and i cant imagine your pain and how you feel. You said your mother taught you and your brother to stay strong and prepared you both with her words. How are the two of you doing right now . Well, you know what, tamron, and its very hard, but, like i said, my mother really raised us to be resilient. She was resilient in her life. She lost her father at 12 years old, and ever since then, shes just been putting one foot in front of the other and really just always moving forward and always making the best of even the worst situations, and thats what me and my brother are going to continue to do. Shes a remarkable person, which you know that. To make these videos and the fact that you all didnt know, you discovered them. She didnt tell you she was making the videos. Why do you think she kept it a secret . Well, you know what, i think that she wasnt going to send the videos, obviously, to me and my brother because she didnt want to freak us out with how sick she was. Every time that me or my brother talked to her, she would tell us that she was fine and that she loved us, but in reality, she was really sick, so the reason why she recorded that was really to just show people how this virus can progress, and i just knew there was something on my mothers phone. My mother was very smart, and i looked through her videos once we were able to get it when she passed, and there all the videos are for you. Its definitely heartbreaking to watch, but theyre educational, and my mother still was trying to help people even with her last couple of breaths. With that video, when you press. I mean, you looked through her phone, and you see a video, and you hit the first one, and you start to listen. Take me back to what was going through your mind, if you can. Theres really not one emotion i can express to you how i felt. First, youre angry. Youre sad that your mother had to go through that, but you also realize that she did it for a reason, and once me and my brother saw, we knew that we had to get these videos out there to show the masses how this virus can impact people. When your mother first got sick, she didnt want to actually go to the hospital because she did not want to take a bed away from someone else, a patient. What does that tell us about your mother that you already know . That she was just selfless. She always put others ahead of her. She was the first one to give help out but the last one to ask for it. Thats just who my mother was. She was very resilient, like i was saying earlier. You begged her not to go into work, as you said in the video. Do you understand why she risked her life and kept working . Absolutely. My mother, she loved the er. She was very passionate about saving lives in the hospital and outside of the hospital, and the reason why she went into work was that she really wanted to help people and make a difference in this world, and in all honesty, my mother wouldnt have been able to live with herself if she just sat home and watched this all progress. She wanted to be there on the forefront fighting this virus. Thats just who my mother was. Coming up, reid says his mother was best friend and best friend to everyone she knew. Next, what he wants all of us to know about his mother who lost her life trying to save others. But first, as we go into break, this year the American Nurses association has extended nurses week to an entire month, the month of may, and we think that is an amazing decision, and throughout the show, you will see pictures and videos of heroes from all across the country. That was daisyawardwinning emergency room nurse pamela orlando, who lost her battle with covid19 just over 3 weeks ago. Her son, reid, is sharing her story in hopes that people will take this virus more seriously and also understand the sacrifices being made. Every day, we lose between 1,000 and 2,000 americans to the virus, and i never want someones loss of a beloved Family Member to be a number. These are mothers, brothers, sisters, daughters, sons, aunts and uncles. These are human beings. These are our neighbors, and, reid, tell us about your mom. You say that she was your best friend and a best friend to everyone she knew. In that video, you can tell the kind of person she was. She didnt know a stranger. You could tell that. My mother really was a mother. She was the best mother possible for me and my brother, but like i said, she was my best friend. Me and my brother really grew up with my mother. I didnt have my father in my life for that long, so i know its a cliche term to say that she was my everything ,but my mother really was. She did everything for me and my brother. She made sure that i got through college. She helped pay for college. She put my brother in private school. She valued family and friends more so than anything, and thats why we had these big sunday dinners since i can remember to try to bring friends and family together and to really just bond and rejoice and hang out with each other. She always wanted people to just feel comfortable around her and comfortable in my house. You could be yourself, and you werent going to get judged by my mother. Thats who she was. Im curious, reid. They say everyone has a story, and we love saying that. What do you think made your mom so extraordinary, so strong . My mother, at the age of 12 years old, her father died of a massive heart attack, and since she wasnt able to save her father, really impacted her life and really made her want to save people, and she just wanted to be an unbelievable person because she needed someone to help her out, and everyone that needed help in my life, any of my friends, any of my Family Members, my mom was always there because of that reason, that she really needed someone to lean on, and she loved her family to death, and once she passed, that really defined her life. Also my mother was a survivor of domestic violence, and on top of that, she was a Breast Cancer survivor. With Breast Cancer, with chemo, she never missed a match of me or my brothers or whether it was wrestling, whether it was football, basketball. She just never missed anything, my mother. She really was extraordinary and always kept moving forward, always kept moving forward no matter what happened in her life. It was not. My mother did not have an easy life by any means, but she never wanted people to feel bad for her. She just wanted to keep moving forward. You can see all of her strength in you. I know today is your 24th birthday, and i know your birthday wish would be to have your mother, but i do know that her coworkers been thinking about you, and i want to show you a Little Something that they asked us to send to you. All we all love your mom, and we love you and your brother. Happy birthday, reid. What does it mean to know theyre thinking about you . Well, it means a lot because in the er, in general, all the hospitals she worked at, she really felt like all those people were her family, and now they just seem like an extended part of my family now because theyve meant so much to my mom, and they mean a lot to me, and it means a lot to me that all these nurses and doctors who are on the front lines fighting this virus, and theyre not looking for praise. Theyre looking to save lives, and for my birthday, honestly, i would just want to make sure that they are all protected. Well, let me tell you, your mother is beaming with joy watching how amazing you are and how you are continuing her legacy. I know you have a lot of weight on your shoulders, but you are strong, and youre just like her. I appreciate it. Thank you. Really, it means a lot that we were able to get my mothers story out there. Thank you. Thank you, reid. Our thoughts are prayers are with you. Again, happy birthday. I know your mom is so proud of you. Well be right back. Moss ii, is a traveling nurse. He has so many degrees and certifications that the letters after his name look like an entire alphabet. You dont believe me . Here we go. Listen to this. He is a bsn, rn, nrp, ccrn, cen, tcrn, cfrn, cpen and ctrn. He joins us now from his current post in the bronx. Everett, you are the man with all of those titles behind your name. I mean, how long does one have to go to school to get all of that listed . So i have a 4year degree as a registered nurse, but once i finished nursing school, i then pursued certifications in every specialty area that ive worked, so i have a certification in emergency nursing, flight nursing, transport nursing, pediatric nursing, trauma nursing and Critical Care. Do you know of anyone else who has all of those titles . Do you know anyone personally . There are a couple. So theres a company that offers these certifications, and i think theres only about 30 of us that have all five, and theres a few of us that have an additional. Thats amazing. Certs as well. So i was a paramedic before getting into nursing, so thats where the nrp comes from. As well as being a registered nurse, im a nationally registered paramedic as well. So you are in this elite group of people who are helping us fight this coronavirus. You actually left your family in atlanta. Mmhmm. And came to new york, the epicenter of the coronavirus, to help. Tell me what role you play here in new york. Here in new york, im currently working as an emergency or Critical Care nurse. When i first arrived, we were in a icu area that wasnt typically an icu, but because of the volume of critical patients that came into the hospital, we had to put icu nurses in other places to care for these nurses. Things have gotten better since my arrival, so know i work as a prone team nurse which is a matter of positioning the patients to help improve their oxygenation as well as a coteam response nurse. As i mentioned, youre married. Youve got three kids. Youve been away for 3 long weeks. Mmhmm. Thats the longest you have been on the road. How are they handling this . How are you handling being away from them . This is a first for us for being away this long. My first career was a firefighter, so i spent a lot of time away from home on long shifts, so weve all gotten accustomed to me being away from home for extended hours, but this is the first time ive ever been away this long. I definitely miss my family. They miss me, but i know that theyre proud of the work im doing because my wife is actually from the bronx, so their family is here in new york, and to be able to come and help out their city is something that their proud of and something that im very happy to do. Im curious because you came to new york because at the time, and new york still has the, obviously, highest number of cases, but atlanta is having its own struggles right now. Do you feel conflicted ever of, where should i pick . Where should i be . Where am i needed most . Yes and no. I kind of. When i decided to come here, it was the epicenter. Atlanta had not been hit as hard. I work in several of the hospitals down there as well, so the numbers are definitely picking up and have picked up, but i know that my time is coming up short here, and ill be headed back home to help out however i can. Youre going to head back home soon. We know that there are predictions of a second wave and that we could see this in the fall. Would you then get back on the road . Are you still willing to travel after all youve seen and been through on this first wave to do this again . Im always willing to travel and willing to help, and unfortunately, im. Well, fortunately and unfortunately, im starting a graduate program at Emory University back home, and thats actually why im leaving as early as i am because my graduate courses start on may 18th, so i have to get back so that i can continue my pursuits back home. Thank you, everett. Keep up the great work, and give our love to your family as they are sharing you with all of the people who need you at work, and coming up, a patient advocate who is now speaking for families whose loved ones are isolated or no longer have a voice of their own. The conversation continues on our social media platforms, facebook, twitter, youtube and instagram, and visit us at tamronhallshow. Com. Lets talk about it and get through this together. [cheers and applause] that was the staff at the Monmouth Medical Center in long branch, new jersey, clapping out one of their covid19 patients who headed home after 6 days in the hospital. Sari shamah is a patient advocate and has been on that team for 6 years. When patients are hospitalized with coronavirus and separated from their loved ones, sari helps the family stay connected, and sari joins us from Monmouth Medical Center in long branch. Sari, so what does a patient advocate do . Take me through your role. Precovid19, basically i would go into patient rooms if they had misunderstanding, not even misunderstanding, but lets say they didnt understand what a doctor or a nurse was telling them about their condition or if they had questions that they needed answered or if they had something that they needed particularly for their stay in the hospital. We would go. As a patient advocate, i would go in. I would talk to them, find out what their answers are, give them to them. If they just needed a hand to hold, i was able to hold their hand, comfort them, be with them. Even the simple act of giving somebody a warm blanket and pillow makes the difference in the world to somebody who is sick and scared in a hospital. How has your role changed since this pandemic . Because everybody is possibly contagious, im not physically allowed to be in a room like i used to be. Now, and unfortunately, a lot of our patients are very, very sick. Some of them are on ventilators, and they dont have a voice for themselves, and ive been getting phone calls from Family Members who are not allowed in the hospital, obviously for safety reasons for their own health, for the health of our staff, for the health of the patients that are here. Theyve been reaching out to Patient Advocates like myself and saying, whats going on . We havent been able to get in touch with a nurse or a doctor. Can you please help us . And basically im the person thats going up to the floors, and im actually going to the nurses and saying, hey, listen. I know youre busy. I know you have a lot on your hands. Please, can you just give me something to give back to the Family Members so that i can comfort them in some level, in some way . Sari, you are there witnessing some of the most intimate and private moments of a persons life, and even though youre there as a patient advocate, youve said that you feel a sense of guilt witnessing this. Why . Okay. Youre going to make me cry. Okay. So basically ive been called to go and facetime, and its usually because they have to say goodbye or they dont understand the criticalness of the patient, their Family Member, and im sitting there holding an ipad up through a window, and im hearing the family crying and begging for their loved one, please wake up. Please come back to us. I try to be quiet with my crying because the guilt that i feel is that this belongs to the family. This is not my loved one, thank god. This is their time and their time to feel sorrow and pain. And why am i crying . And i have to literally talk to myself and say, hey. Your heart is breaking because you feel their pain. Listen, the very title of what you do is patient advocate. You told me at the beginning of our conversation even giving someone a blanket or a pillow makes the difference, and you have to know that what you do makes a difference. Holding that ipad up, being the messenger of love that people need right now is why youre so special, and its why we wanted to reach out to you and give you a virtual hug but give you the verbal thank you that you deserve, so were grateful. Your tears are real, and we currently with you, but we celebrate the fact that people like you exist. Thank you so much, sari. Thank you to the Monmouth Medical Center team for sharing you with us today. I know you have a busy day, so thank you. Thank you. Coming up, they work or are on call for up to 24 to 52 hours at a time. The sacrifice identical twin nurses treating covid19 patients are making together, thats next. Hi, tamron. My name is genice, and im a registered nurse in los angeles, california. I came out here to new york to help out with the pandemic and the nurses shortage. Im here with my colleagues, my nurse friends, and were sticking together and making sure everybody stays safe so we can take care of the patients here, and we want to remind everyone to obey by the rules and the guidelines, and thank you for having me, tamron. Byebye. m buzz chhoney nut cheerios are heart chhealthy and can help lower cholesterol. man mmmmm. buzz did you just mmmmm . And this is country crock. Pull up a chair shine for the rest of your life stronger than ever, ever stronger than ever, ever shine every day and night stronger than ever, ever stronger than ever welcome back. Today we are honoring frontline medical workers whove gotten us to this point in a crisis none of us saw coming, and theyre risking their lives doing it. Less than 3 hours from my tiny hometown of luling, texas, youll find identical twin sisters who have grown up reaching milestone after milestone together, and after completing over 15 years of Higher Education each now, they have their doctorate in nursing practice. Drs. Shaletra jordan and shanetra hodgehill are certified registered nurse anesthesiologists, okay, at a levelone Trauma Center outside of houston, texas. I cannot get their title right, but thats okay because they work hard. They are on call up to 24 to 52 hours at a time, and they prepare covid19 patients for ventilators or women in labor for epidurals and every surgery in between. They get through these days together, and heres a look at their video diary. Good morning. We normally get our temperature checked, and then we got to answer a bunch of questions like, do we have a temperature . Have we been in contact with anybody . And then they give us a mask. And i have to also bring my own ppe, my own n95 mask due to the fact they have limited supplies, and theyre reusing supplies. His first thing was, you need to do whatever you need to do and not bring that stuff home. Were not huggyhuggy or whatever because he watches the news all the time. For all procedures, we have to have on eyewear. I have on my two masks. My n95 is underneath the surgical mask. I have on two pairs of gloves. I have on this disposable gown, which ill tie up in just a second before the patient comes into the room. A lot of nurses arent used to seeing this much death at one time. After this is over, all nurses have to do a Mental Health check to make sure that youre good because youve seen so much. I was in the break room the other day, and it was just so much negativity in there, and i was just like, look, guys. Youve got to find one thing about this whole thing thats positive. Thats just something we have to do. Shaletra jordan and shanetra hodgehill join us from shanetras home in pearland, texas. Thank you ladies for joining us. First of all, give me a lesson here. Nurse ana. Anaesthetist. Anaesthetist. So the mere fact that i cant even pronounce it shows that i would never have been able to go through the College Hours you did to receive it. I was surprised, and i think a lot of people on our staff, that nurses, you have a doctorate in nursing. Shanetra, tell me about that. We got our degree. Its a doctorate of nursing practice which opens up doors for you to practice particular roles in the Healthcare System such as teaching, leadership, research committees. That is phenomenal, and, shaletra, as an identical twin, of course, youre in this together. Youre at the same hospital going through this extraordinary time together. What does it mean to have your sister, your twin, right there with you especially when i watched that video diary talking about even that break room moment where there was just negativity, understandably, and having to pull out the positive of that . How does it feel to have here there . Its always a blessing to have someone that is likeminded as you. We are the same where we dont allow each other to get down no matter whats going on in the hospital system. We tend to pick each other up as well as our healthcare coworkers, and so its always good to have that backup person. If i need something, if i have to intubate somebody, then i know that she will be there to help out, draw up some drugs or whatever i need. Shanetra, because youre identical twins, im curious here. Can you read her feelings as soon as she comes out of a stressful moment . I mean, are you that close where you can lock eyes and you know she needs an extra hug or you know shes going through a rough moment . Can you feel that from her . Yes. I can feel that from her. I try to make her laugh, although shes the goofy one, but i try to pull out my, get away from my seriousness and bring some kind of positive energy to her moment. Shanetra, i know you both work with covidpositive patients. How many people are you seeing, about, a day, treating a day . It varies from day to day. We dont have a specific number, but we are working really hard to make sure that we taking care of patients and least try to get them back to their families. Shaletra, you get your temperature taken when you go to work. Does that give you some piece of mind . I know that people can be asymptomatic, so having a temperature is not the openandclosed door to whether or not youve been exposed to the virus, but how does that affect you being able to get the temp at least taken when you go to work . It gives me peace of mind to know that our hospital is taking the appropriate steps to make sure that we arent coming in sick. Patient safety is always the most important thing, and so at our kind of facilities, all of the Healthcare Worker have been doing an excellent job of staying at home when they are feeling sick or anything like that, so even though they say that some people get covid19, and they dont have a temperature, its always a positive to know that you dont have those symptoms, and so if you do get those symptoms, then you can go ahead and get treated. Let me ask you. Obviously, we know this is incredibly dangerous work that you are doing. Fourteen thousand nurses have contracted coronavirus. Twentyseven have lost their lives. Theres two of you there. Show of hands, which of you, after all those hours of college and all the work put in, which of you considered quitting . Neither. You stuck it out. I love that. My heart was racing, but i knew neither of you were going to raise your hand to that. Well, coming up, well talk with the men who are the wind beneath these angels wings. Shaletra and shanetras husbands will join us. Well be right back. Im a delivery Operations Manager in san diego, california. We were one of the first stations to pilot a fleet of electric vehicles. Shine for the rest of your life stronger than ever, ever stronger than ever, ever shine every day and night stronger than ever, ever stronger than ever today were praising the medical workers, nurses and advocates who, day in and day out, are helping save lives in this battle against the coronavirus, and were back with identical twin sister, doctors and crnas shaletra jordan and shanetra hodgehill. They are also mothers and wives who are away from their families for 24 hours or more at a time, and shaletras husband, e. J. , and shanetras husband, john, join us. So yesterday was mothers day. Was it extra special given all that youve gone through at work . Yes. With all of this stuff going on, it just makes you appreciate life and your family more. I try [inaudible] yesterday. We really just cooked dinner and just really had a good time and just kind of just loved on each other, a lot of laughter. Thats what you need. E. J. , youre really concerned about shaletra bringing the virus home to your family. What is the protocol when she walks into the house from work . When she gets home, she already has her routine set to remove her clothes in a separate area and what she brings into the home. She comes in. She goes right in to hop in the shower, and after that, then we can sit back and spend time with the family. I know we have toughlove conversations with our kids. Did you, as a couple, have a toughlove conversation . Im not asking if you argued over this. Im asking, did you have to sit down and have that real hearttoheart . I can tell the answer already, so tell me what happened. It pretty much just flowed together. Everybody is on the same court. Everyone knows whats expected of each other, and we just take it from there, and its worked out well thus far. It has worked out well, and thats why theyre part of the people that were celebrating. John, you have a different approach to all of this. Whats your approach . So before covid19 came about, i know that diseases and things are a risk, so my whole aspect of it with the family is, we kind of move in the situation just as e. J. We remove the clothes before she enters out of the garage and step into the home to make everybody safe, but our faith base is mainly just believing, but spiritually shell be okay and encouraging her and basically just letting her vent and talk about her day. I dont worry as much, but i do know the threat is there, so we dont take it for granted without sanitizer with mask and everything, so we just make sure clothes are removed and let her come in, let her know, hey, this is a safe haven. This is a place to talk and communicate whatever happened today if you want to talk about it, and the extra grace is distributed, so to speak. So im curious since they are at work 24hour shifts. Both of yall, e. J. And john, youre holding down the fort. Do you send videos all day . When im away, im constantly bugging steven. Im like, send me a video. What are yall doing . Facetime me. John, are you on facetime patrol . Are you sending updates to her . As you know, theyre twins, so my wife is more of an introvert, and the kids know, so they dont really speak with or expect to see mom facetime with them, so group text messaging is in the middle. They get Group Text Messages in the middle. We hear from them periodically between an hour or a couple hours. We know shes all right. Like i said, its something thats her personality. You just cant worry being her husband. You just cant worry so much to so to youre not strong for them if they need you. E. J. , do you send videos and facetime checkin . How do you keep her uptodate on whats going on . Our little ones are something else, so theyre doing milestones every day, 1 and 2yearold, so i send her videos, pictures of them just growing up because i know she cant be there to see it, so thats the least i can do. Its very important. It is very important because you dont want to miss those moments. So we see medical workers, ladies, doing the levelup challenge, singing together, praying together. We all clearly need that Little Something to get us through the day. I hear the two of you have found a way to stay positive when you start your shifts. Who wants to tell me about it . Shaletra . When we come on, so tiktok has [inaudible] thing that a lot of people did, so we come in and be like, hey, guys. After we get done, were going to do a tiktok video, so check your phone so you can practice, and so we just try to find laughter, and then, of course, when in the operating room and stuff, were playing music. It can go it can be anything before the patient comes in, of course, just to kind of get our day put on and get us upbeat, and then we just joke around with each other. I love that. Well, listen, this entire conversation, you both have kept beautiful bright smiles on your faces, and that is always comforting, and i can imagine when someone is coming into the hospital. They are afraid. They dont know whats going to happen to them. To see two smiling beautiful faces like yours, i am certain, provides comfort. Shaletra and e. J. , shanetra and john, thank you so much for being here. Coming up, too busy to eat. So what happened when the mother of an ems worker said, youll not only eat your vegetables, youll eat everything that i can get to you to keep you healthy . That story, next. We want to be that community that brings people together. I know we are all going through a lot. Trust me. It seems like all day and night, i actually hear ambulance sirens outside my window. You enter into new york city, and it is described as a war zone. Its an experience ill never forget. Lives are at stake. If you truly love the people you claim you love, then stay home. We will come out on the other side of this. Newly unemployed turn to food banks to feed their families. This is a moment of extreme crisis. Theres nothing to be sorry for. I know how hard this is. Its who you are as a person that matters. We have worked our entire life for what we have. What is our future going to look like . Are we going to have anything left . Why do men seem to be contracting the coronavirus at a higher rate than women . Nobody likes it when your kids ask, whats for dinner . And youre not sure what to tell them. Lives are at risk here on the ships. We dont want any more fatalities. Public order against large gatherings including places of worship. Will you ever comply . No. We will never comply with that. All you really want is to be there for them, hold their hand and kiss them goodbye, and people arent getting that. If ever a time when we wanted that love and companionship and that touch, its now. [laughter] oh, my god. Tamron i love this i love this. I love this. No calories, no sweeteners, all smiles, bubly sparkling water, crack a smile. [upbeat music] nicole straights daughter, emma, is an ems worker on the front lines in connecticut, and every day when nicole would drop off food for her daughter, emma, she would also pack enough food for the entire unit. After seeing the need on the front line, nicole decided to raise money, pull together volunteers and start a group called food for the front lines, and nicole joins us from her home in westport, connecticut. So, nicole, feeding people is not new. You did nonprofit work, and youre actually a chef. Your daughter was on the front lines, and you knew restaurants were also hurting, so you figured out a way to, i guess, bring them all together. Tell me about the plan. What did you do . Sure. So my daughter came home unexpectedly from college, like the rest of the kids in the country, and she immediately went back to doing community service, and as a mom, i was both equally proud and nervous for her, and i knew that our communityowned restaurants were going to be taking a hit almost immediately since they had to shut down, and so i thought, well, how do i both show support for my daughter and the other ems workers and my girlfriend, who is an er nurse, and how do i show support for our communityowned restaurants that have always supported our community . And so i decided to buy 40 individually packed meals from a local restaurant and bring them to the ems workers where my daughter was working and also the er, and thats how food for the front lines started, and its been amazing. Its been amazing to see the support of our community. Absolutely. So you raised money online, and you spent it at local restaurants. How many businesses have you helped in total at this point . Sure. Weve raised over 130,000, and that money has been spent. Whoa. Directly to over 65 local restaurants and caterers who, in many instances, are have zero income coming in right now, so weve been able to help keep them open and make payroll for some of them. That is incredible. You think about it, and i know we all can relate. Weve said at some point, oh, my gosh. I was so busy. I forgot to eat. That pales in comparison to what your daughter and the people on the front line. They dont have time to think about eating. They dont have time to go on an app and say, okay. Whos delivering in our area . A, very few people delivering now, and, b, theyre in it. So how does it make you feel to be able to give those warm meals, give a sandwich to someone you know hasnt had a single second to even think about nourishing their own bodies as theyre saving the lives of other people . It is such a powerful feeling. As somebody who certainly struggles with anxiety and depression, to know that i have a purpose every day, i have a reason to get up every day because i know that the meals that were buying are not only supporting restaurants, its also immediately impacting not just the nourishment of these frontline Healthcare Workers, but its such a huge morale booster for them, so to be able to go to bed every night and say, you know what . Ive had a purpose today, its been remarkable. Its been really powerful. Nicole, you just brought a smile to our face. This is a difficult conversation to have because we are talking with frontline workers who are away from their families. Were talking to loved ones who have lost a parent who was working on the front lines, and here you are doing something thats just brought such joy. This is a roller coaster. Its an emotional roller coaster of lows, lord knows, lows and highs like you, so thank you. Give our love to your daughter, our best to her. Im serious. You just brought a smile to our face. Thank you so much. Im so glad. Have a great day. Ill talk to you later. Thank you. Well, Nelson Mandela said, it always seems impossible until its done, and this feels like impossible time, but what we know is, weve gotten this far because of people like those weve talked about today and the countless others we wont know by name or face. They are the ones who will help us get on the other side of this. Thank you so much for watching, and tomorrow were exploring small towns in America Fighting for survival.
