Say enough is enough. So i am so excited to introduce you to our first two guests, rapper china mac and then founders of the movement, they cant burn us all. Youre looking at video of the rally over the weekend and they are holding in San Francisco. Without further ado, guys, welcome to the show. Before we start, where are you coming from . The back of the truck. You want to see those in the bay area, just a couple of decades. Why they cant burn us all. It is a difference to a new incident you saw in new york. One that our sister station covered extensively. It was in light of the 89yearold woman who was attacked and set on fire. And she was burned or attempted to be burned and when i saw that, thinking of a name for the movement and i came up with the name, because it was like, okay, now is a time for us to unify and to unite and to protect our communities together and i felt like that name really just represented what the movement is about. Is that, you know, there are strength in numbers and when we fight, we need to fight together. Its almost eerie we had a similar incident in the bay area area, thinking, oh my gosh, that would be my own grandma. Speak out, do something a little bit more. What was the driving force for you . I haventn he wha any voices that are really fighting out, you see crimes, loud enough, and we havent seen our people rally together or a call to rally. All the things that are happening, you saw that our community was facing these atrocities right now and what are we going toads about it and when are we going to do something about it . Does it take someone to have attempted murder to finally speak out for our community to be enraged and get out into the streets . Takes someone to be killed. We dont want to get to the point and need to know we need the people to know, we need this had Asian Community but unity among all people with hate crimes and racism. This is not just rallies and movement for asian americans. I mean, this is for everyone, for the greater good. Our strength in our own communities wherever that may be, but also to strengthen the bonds of other communities, that is just as important as strengthening our own community because we know how valuable all the asian people, all the people period. This is a peoples movement. The threats of violence towards me and covering issues and have you experienced a little bit of that, i guess, rift with people who say asian i american and other ethnic backgrounds. Right is right and wrong is wrong. Well stand with the people right now, and its, all marginalized people other communities, as well as our own community, but at the end of the day, i try not to pay too much mind to it because and fighting for the people, this is a selfless fight because i havent been attacked and my people, my parents havent got attacked but people are getting attacked. And i think thats the problem and however, if they could do it the one, they could do it the all. Everybody can happen to anybody, it can happen to anybodys grandmother, so i feel like it is time for us to take it back to community and take it back to hey, if it happens to one, it happens to all. And we all have to do this. Your message of community is being shown on the screen right now. Were showing pictures from your instagram where you have all of these hundreds of people marching saying signs theyre calling for that unity. I want to share a couple of messages from facebook. You get folks like justin, unity together period. I stand with yall coming to you from fairfield, someone sayin all people have got to Work Together and stop the uprising. Support ofething gras r picked up steam on social media. So powerful, rewarding. It felt like this is what im here to do. This is why we are on this planet earth, and im not perfect. Nobody here is perfect. Ive made a lot of mistakes but standing there with the people no matter how many people, we are fighting a pandemic, a heat wave, we are fighting the Labor Day Weekend and we were fighting so many things and still, so many people there. I was just so pleased and so honored and so rewarded that i was able to do that. And yeah, it felt really good. Weve all been who we are and where we are. For who they are and not cancel anybody for everything. So there needs to be room for forgiveness, room for grace. Not just talk about us but as a society overall, because we need to find our Common Ground you are very open in talking about your past and with your name, people will know you were in a gang and also been incarcerated and what will you say to people who ask, you know, how come you guys are qualified to lead this movement . What would you say to them . Qualified, but i saw nobody else that could have been qualified talking about it. Not saying nobody but just hasnt been heard. Hasnt been with an aggressive voice. Hasnt been with a powerful voice, a screaming, with a war cry, and i feel like this is what we need right now. We need our people to kind of waken up out of our slumber and just understand that we need, the only way we can survive in dark times, and we dont know whats going to happen in a couple of months. Its important for us to rally up and to bring all of our voices together and we shouldnt bicker about who is leading qualified or anything as long as the heart and the direction of it is something positive and we should all pitch in and shouldnt worry about whos leading and all of that. Lets talk about the San Francisco rally. By the way, you get a lot of love on social media. Anastasiya, dont need to be qualified if you just want change. What is planned with San Francisco . I know this has been in the works, the movement you want to spread across the country. What can people expect in the bay area. The rally. 2 00 p. M. And then thankful, were not from San Francisco, helped us organize and helping us out in San Francisco. For anyone else that wants to support and wants to help out within the organizing or volunteering, you can hit us up on our instagram at theycantburnusall. Its incredible. Its an incredible thing to be a part of, never seen in my life. Asian people, all type of asian people are coming together to unify and so incredibly diverse. Chinese people, really stand up, fight back and have our allies stand up with us too. A purpose to come into San Francisco is definitely rally, and to give the people a message and rile the people up and awaken the people but more so, here to build community. Everybody that comes to our rallies, we expect everybody to communicate to me and network where everybody should all stay in contact and all be aware of whats going on in the city and we should all be pitching in to help whatever it is that the people need to be helped with in the city and were just coming in to strike, to spark that, to spark that, looking forward to go into San Francisco. I really have never been to San Francisco and i really feel like that theres going to be a lot of heart there. Big team. Although we have heart and were looking to connect with other people with heart, to fight this. Heart is going to take both of you such a long way. I know theres plans to rule this out across the country and we wish you the best of luck as we amplify your voices so others feel empowered to do the same. So stay with us. Were going to continue the conversation on facebook, but for now, we are going to take a short break on welcome back on air on abc7, when it comes to the covid19 pandemic. Joining me to talk a little bit more about this, familiar f abc7 special correspondent dr. Alok patel. I was giving you a hard time in the commercial break but thank you for laboring with us on on n labor day day. Theres no breaks when it comes to Public Health. We saw packed beaches over the weekend. All facing record heat, people want to cool off. I get it. What are you most concerned about here with these big gatherings . Im concerned about, most concerned but the same thing we saw when it came to the school graduations, memorial day, fourth of july, and thats when youre seeing on video, shared online. We could start to see schools closing and go backwards. Thats what all of us are sitting back. And as we were watching the video of people on the beach as you were speaking, and does that have an effect on the way this virus is spread . I mean, granted, they are outside and that seems to be the fallback for many people. It is safer to be outside. You talk about things like ventilation. That isnt an excuse for people gathering close together when theyre outside. Theyre all in the same area and close enough for person to person transmission can happen even with the ventilation and understand people are sharing food. And when people drink, they forget about all the rules and regulations. Those are things to take into account. You touched upon this, the whole staying socially distant but its hard also, when youre in that mood of celebratinceleb. Its a holiday and you cant help but being together and maybe youre throwing around a ball, accidentally get too close, its really easy to get off track. Totally is. And i dont think anyone out there, anyone else speaking about Public Health mandates is faulting people for wanting to go outside. Thats not the point. Were not telling americans, you need to stay sheltered in place and dont do anything, and dont live your normal lives. Its important for fitness and Mental Health to get outside and socialize but theres absolutely safe ways to have outdoor gatherings. Safe ways to go to the embark der row and go running. Even to have a backyard barbecue, take mitigation steps to have some sense of normal right now while keeping everyone safe. You brought an important point up. People want to feel like its back to normal but in the back hetof precautions. We talked about schools. Were going to get to that, but i do want to address something thats been in the news. Florida, obviously, we have seen so much coronavirus news and some significant. It is good news when you see the test positivity rates dip below 10 . According to the World Health Organization standards, we want to see that below 5 for two weeks but were still happy about the fact that test positivity rates seem to be going low. Two big headlines is florida being under 10 and new york under 1 . So that does two things. Mandates that wearing a mask works. The closures certain amount of adequate testing. As numbers come down, that means that were testing enough people who are asymptomatic and keeping the virus spread under a little bit of control. If that positivity number goes up, thats basically telling you, inferring theres more positive cases out there were not detecting. Think about it if you were to go on an Easter Egg Hunt and kept coming back with dozens of eggs, theres a possibility theres more out there you havent uncovered. So i think theres two reasons we can be cautiously optimistic about the low positivity numbers. I like that analogy. Easy to digest that way. Take a quick break, dr. Patel but i encourage everyone to continue to submit your questions to dr. Patel welcome back, everybody. Weve been speaking with dr. Alok patel about all things covid19. He just answered a great question from a viewer on facebook during our commercial break. We are streaming live there on facebook about the double problem of Wearing Masks when it comes to smoke and also when it comes to preventing transmission of covid19. Many people asking about a vaccine. Lets go with what you predict. What have you heard, dr. Patel, on where we are on the quest to getting successful vaccine and rolling it out . What i hear is a lot of anxiety, and youll hear two different schools of thought. One of them is purely scientific. The vast majority of people in the Scientific Community are telling americans just to be patient and wait for a safe and effective vaccine to roll out, phase three trials may not be complete by this fall. The other hand, you have politicians, including the president , today in a briefing saying, you know, expect a vaccine and its going to be a big surprise for a very specific date which is almost making people feel like this is a politicized process. According to a recent poll, 78 of people felt the push to get a vaccine was driven more by politics than science. I think thats really dangerous. And so people want to make sure that phase three trials, which is going to involve 30,000 people that are actually complete with accurate safety before we see a vaccine. Ready by october, thats one month from now. We havent even seen any type of prediction and data thats going to be available. So people need to be realistic. One is going to be rolled out when its safe and effective and hopefully not driven by politics. Ill just end by saying, the scientific adviser, operation, if he found this process was driven by politics, just to get out. I think people need to Pay Attention to the science. We only have about a minute left and i do want to reiterate this because we talked about it in the commercial break, when it comes to flu season, i mean, what do you want to remind everyone about . I know were all thinking about coronavirus, but flu season should be at the forefront as well. It has to be. Its already september. You can get your flu shot. Every year, including last year, according to the cdc, between 400,000 to 700,000 americans get hospitalized with influenza and thousands die. We not only dont know what this flu season looks like but if someone has covid19 and influenza, which could be a potential disaster. Every year, we see hospitals hit capacity from just influenza. I do not want to imagine the dystopian reality of influenza outbreaks and covid19. These pandemics can come back in waves, so people need to do what they can to take all the precautions weve been talking about but also please get your flu shot. The last thing we want is a double whammy of pandemics. Dr. Alok patel. One more time, lets take a all right, we appreciate all of you taking the time to join us for abc7 news 3 00 getting answers show.
