[alarm blares] every day can be a better day despite the challenge all you got to do is leave it better than you found it and just say whatever cause there is no way around it hey feeling good like i should went and took a walk around the neighborhood got that sunshine on my sunday best kelly so a lot of people are facing tough Financial Times these days, and this is a way for people at home to sort of ease their mind, get some great tips from hermoney. Com. Please welcome jean chatzky. Hey, jean. How are you . Hey. Im good. Thanks so much for having me. Kelly a lot of people are worried about money these days, between people being laid off or furloughed or losing their jobs entirely. What do you say to them, people who are so concerned about, you know, wherehow tohow to make the most of their money . Yeah, ii think the best thing that we can do in this uncontrollable time is to really focus on those things that we can control. So even when you dont have a very secure job picture, youve got unemployment coming in. You focus instead on the money thats going out. A lot of people are feeling they cant control the markets, and that is true, but we can control, in many aspects, what were saving. So if we can get ourselves to let go of those things that are really not within our control, we can bring our Blood Pressure down just a little bit. Ryan now, one of the things that we have been doing, so many of us, is cooking more at home, and if you start thinking about the savings from going out or ordering in over the course of a year, that can add up to be quite a bit. It can. So weve made a lot of changes during the pandemic that, if we can keep them going, will actually help us financially over the longterm, and cooking is a huge one. If you look at every meal you eat out costs about 13. 50 per person. Every meal you cook in costs about 4 a person, and some are a lot less than that, and im not suggesting that we dont go back to restaurants when we can because i am dying to get back into a restaurant. Ive been cooking three meals a day here. However, if you can keep it up just a little bit, maybe you cook dinner a couple more times a week, maybe you eat the leftovers for lunch, youre gonna save thousands of dollars over the course of a year. Kelly and what aboutlike, ive been doing this at home. Ive been working out at home, and i find that i enjoy it more. I hate to say that. Ryan me too. Kelly but i actually really enjoy it more. I suddenly dont feel so judged. I mean, i judge myself, but nobody else can see me, so it doesnt matter. Ryan yes. Kelly right . Please, i am so with you. Ive been doing pilates on zoom. I cant touch my toes, and that is not a new thing for me. I have never been able to touch my toes, but its also a lot cheaper to do it this way. Weveweve tuned into these free classes on zoom and instagram, and walking outside is such an amazing exercise, and its free, so if you found that you werent going to the gym and youre still paying 50 a month or you were paying a lot for thisthose boutique exercise classes, just adding some of these free or less expensive workouts into your schedule over the longterm is gonna, again, save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars a year, and thats the point, to sort of capture these good changes that weve made and hold on to them for a little while. Ryan and jean, just curious. You know, were talking about cooking at home and food and exercise. Over your shoulder, are those spanish olives with toothpicks in the painting . Those are actually apples in the painting. Ryan oh, theyre apples. Theyre green apples ryan from here they look like olives. I got a lot of depth here. Ive been watching that room rater thing, and im thinking maybe this time theyre gonna actually tune in. Ryan i was thinking of all the things to do with olives while you were talking. Kelly whats room rater . Room rater is this crazy twitter account where they actually look at you and judge what your background looks like. Ryan oh, good, just what we need. Yeah, exactly. Ryan were going to be judged by our backgrounds now. Kelly oh, thank god. A whole new way to be judged by twitter. Ryan enough judgment. Kelly oh, i wasi was hoping and praying theyd come up with a new way. Ryan we were looking for another place to be judged, and we found it. Well come right back with jean. Hang on. More tips after this. Announcer if youd like to know more about anything you see on live, just log on to our website at kellyandryan. Com. Dancing in the sun kelly were back with jean chatzky, who is teaching us how to be financially resilient in very financially destabilizing times. If people need cash, jean, should we pull it from our 401 k s, borrow from it . What are you recommending . Yeah, you wanna make the best bad decisions that you can in this period of time, and so if youre really looking for cash, its better to stop contributing to your 401 k rather than to pull money out of it cause thatll hit you with some very expensive taxes. If you have to get money from it, borrow, dont withdraw. Ryan and, you know, taking a look at thethe stock market, its inyesterday it was, i think, up, but it can be very volatile. We dont know whats to come, a lot of uncertain times. Do you suggest we pull out of the market . A lot of people are having trouble sleeping because the markets have been so volatile. If youre one of them, the best thing to do is just take a little money out rather than pull all of your money out. We know trying to time the market historically is a strategy that just doesnt work, so if you need to take a little bit of risk out, you do it, but you try to adhere to your longterm strategy. Kelly and what if youre planning to retire before the pandemic . If you were planning on a retirement, should i still do it . If you can put off is that a hint . If you can put off any real longterm decisions right now, if you were planning to move, if you were planning to retire, if you were planning to take Social Security even a little bit earlier than expected, just try to pump the brakes a little bit. Give the waters, financially, a little time to settle. I think well all feel better about the decisions we make if we give ourselves a little bit more time to sleep on them. Ryan all right, one more thing before you go. A lot of people are hoarding cash, keeping cash at home on hand. Is that a good idea . This is not a hurricane. The atms are not gonna shut down in this time. If you feel you need a little bit of cash, keep a weeks grocery money on hand, but remember, were all using money digitally more than we ever have before. Were paying bills online. Were shopping with apps. You need your money in your Checking Account because thats the way youre gonna actually spend it. Ryan all right, well, good stuff. Kelly people actually seem afraid to touch money too, dont they . If you go to pay for something, they wont touch money. Ryan yeah, now more than ever. Kellyandryan. Com for all of jeans money tips. Good to see you, jean. Thanks so much. Nice to see you guys too. Ryan all right. Bye. Kelly appreciate it. Ryan im thinking about the green apples, and im thinking Peanut Butter or Almond Butter . Probably Almond Butter. Kelly im thinking she said i should still retire, right . Thats whatthats what i heard. Ryan thats what i got out of that segment, right. Kelly thats what i heard. Ryan thats all youre thishe said yes, right . Good news story of the day. Kelly i was like, wait, did i hear yes . Ryan after the break announcer closed captioning sponsored in part by ryan is there any guacamole left . Kelly yeah, there is. Do you want some . Ryan yeah, id love some. Just send me photo evidence of it. All right, ready for our good news story of the day . Check this out. Kelly yes, im ready. Ryan the headline is basicallyits 16 years after her late husbands donated organs saved a life, she gave her kidney to save the life of the same man. So this man is carrying an organ of her late husband as well as an organ of hers to help save his life. The story goes, terri harringtons husband bryan, he died 16 years ago. He saved the lives of four other people through organ donation. She befriended jeffrey, who received bryans kidney and pancreas. When that kidney failed last year, terri immediately volunteered to donate her own kidney, which is now living on with bryans other organ inside of jeff. So its a very generous act of selflessness. Kelly incredible. Ryan two acts of selflessness. Kelly and what are the chances that they would all be compatible that way . I mean, what a miracle. What a miracle. Wow. Ryan meant to be. All right, lets see, tomorrow lisa rinna will be with us. Kelly and nia long will be with us. Ryan plus a performance by natasha bedingfield. Thats all coming up tomorrow. Until then, have a great day. Enjoy your snack. Kelly you too. Mwah today on tamron hall, a juicy new summer novel from americas next top model alum, jay manuel, and artistic expression during these tough times. Fashion designers using face masks as a new canvas, how to tell a powerful story with pictures, and the secret to capturing your familys photo journal with nigel barker. Plus, a lucky tamfam member gets an athome wardrobe reset. So long, work pajamas an all new tamron hall starts now. [dynamic music] welcome to tamron hall from my home. You know, with so much going on, we havent had a chance here to recognize our style team at the tamron hall show. Nominated in the first season of the show for an emmy for wardrobe, ti to ec and ashley d r sleea we loove itweovedt when we were in studio. Our upandcoming Fashion Designer series that we did twice was a huge success. All of the designers sold out of their clothes. Some of them have gone on before the pandemic to be featured in retail stores, while still others are thriving online in their own retail space. So my style team has also been doing trivia on our social media. So when you get a chance, go over to tamron hall shows instagram and have a little fun there. Really, more seriously though, one of the hardest hit industries affected by this pandemic is fashion and retail. I have so many friends who are now getting back into stores where theyve worked for years, still others who own small boutiques who have that uncertainty whether or not they will be able to survive. So it is something that is on my mind. This is not just about, you know, a beautiful outfit. This is what somebodys created, and this is how they take care of their families and sustain in all of this. So it is the middle of the summer, and if youre looking for a good beach read that ties in fashion, my next guest may be what youre looking for. Jay manuel, creative director for americas next top model for 18 seasons has a new novel out all about the behind the scenes drama of a fictitious reality model competition show. Jay joins us from his home in westport, connecticut. Jay, so good to see you. So this book has all the makings of a good soap opera. Youve got jealousy, revenge, ambition, blackmail. My beloved friend, billy porter, put it this way. He said, i clutched my pearls through this page turning read thats laughoutloud funnyshes a kiki, darling that was me channeling billy porter. This is amazing. This fictional show, fictional characters, but clearly, youre pulling from things youve seen and heard in this business. Yes, yes. Well, this was inspired by my life in the whole fashion industry and this eccentric world of reality tv, and, you know, i wanted it to be a lot of fun, and i use satire specifically because, you know, we tend to laugh but also learn more about ourselves kind of through humor. That was the concept behind writing this book the way i did. I wanted people to have fun, but i wanted it to hit some really important issues that kind of sit underneath this what is seemingly a superficial, fun story, but there are some important core themes i wanted to touch on. Youre releasing this book now, some of what you tackle outside of the humor deals with power, race, and gender in the modeling and fashion world. Yes. When you look at what youre talking about right now, you know, magazine editors stepping down, the lack of inclusioneven, like, cooking magazines. Its incredible. If you released this three years ago, it might not have had the effect of the message you want, it wouldve been too soon. Yes, and i dont think it wouldve been as well received a few years earlier, and what was interesting is when i was writing this all of these issues definitely were there, and im not just looking at the fashion industry. Im looking at the fashion and Entertainment Industry as a whole, and i wanted to very specifically look at how the Entertainment Industry deals with intersectionality and black womens identity. Im fascinated because im writing a crime book right now, thats because i did a crime show for years, and also is a personal role in my life. Youre talking about fictionalized characters, but how much of this was your own heartbreak or disappointment and even triumphs, of course, in the fashion and tv world . What i learned when i was done with every rewrite, and if youre writing a book you know what i mean. Writing is really rewriting. So when i got to the end of the process, so to speak, i realized, huh, theres really a part of me in all of these characters even the characters i may not like as much, but theyreit was important to really talk about human stories and hopefully shift the paradigm about how we look at power, kind of relationships, and authority, and thats what i wantthats what i set out to do. Im so happy you found your voice through these characters. I know that you and miss j are teamed up on instagram, one of my favorite people on the planet. So congratulations to your point for finding your next chapter, literally, in the chapters of a great book. Thank you so much, we appreciate you joining us. Thanks, tamron, great to talk with you. Absolutely. By the way the wig, the bword, and the meltdown is available now. Coming up, how will we capture and remember this incredible period that were living through right now . You probably have countless images on this ask pictures we never imagin w commu you probably have aybe yous participatedn som. Jays former costar from americas next top model, world renowned photographer, nigel barker, will tell us why these images on your phone should not be deleted during this time, thats next. And this is country crock. We start with farmgrown ingredients, slowchurned right here in the middle of the country. Which is fitting, because weve been at the middle of tables for generations. That is, until someone at the end needs a little more on their biscuits. No matter where your table is, pull up a chair and bring the country in. Brow fiber extensions. In a stick. Brows look thicker. Instantly. New brow extensions crayon. Only from maybelline new york. New brow extensions crayon. Welcome back. It is hard sometimes to get perspective of things. Were in the middle of this pandemic, but you know what, in 5, 10, 20 years from now, people will likely ask you, where were you . Where did you spend the time during the pandemic . Ive talked to a lot of moms who had babies during this time, and its like tracing these memories and tracking these memories to share with your child. Ive done that with moses. Ive taken a few pictures so that i can explain to him, this is what we are doing during an unprecedented time in this country. So youve got quarantined high school students, colleges happening on zoom, and it is amazing to document whether it is, as i said, the pandemic or even the protests that were watching. So i was curious, how do we capture this, especially since we all walk around with one of these these days . Nigel barker is the world famous photographer who spent 17 seasons as a judge on the hit reality show, the legendary show, americas next top model. Hes been posting beautiful photos of his family during the pandemic and says, you dont, of course, have to be a professional superstar photographer like him, you just need a cell phone. Nigel joins us from burton lake, georgia to talk aboutso nigel, you know, obviously your work is stunningly beautiful, and i justfor me, and i dont want to get all emotional here, but you are a parent as well. Being able to capture these moments and explain and to share this, you know, as i said a few years down the line. Give me some perspective on what that means especially that you have your children. Its everything, tamron, and first of all, thank you for having me on the show. I appreciate it, and, you know, i see you are at home. Im at my sisterinlaws house right now, and im here to visit family. You know, family is key, and especially during this time. Family is everything, right . And i feel thatcertainly with my own kids, they havei have a 14yearold and 11yearold, my 11yearold has just got her first phone, or should i say camera that happens to have a phone on it, right . Shes experimenting and taking pictures, and its fabulous. I mean, for me, i just love the fact thatits almost like giving a child a pencil for the first time. They get to go out there and draw and write, and if you never gave that child a pencil, you could never know that they became an artist, or they might become an author. So by giving them a camera, weve discovered en masse how many wonderful photographers and potential photographers there are out there. Its an art form. Its both a beautiful concept, and its a wonderful thing to track a memory and keep a memory, because thats the essence of photography. Absolutely, and i think about i keep a diary, and ive kept one since i was probably in the third grade. There are times when i go back and reread pages, and i cant believe the reaction i had to something, or how i felt about someone and the same thing happens when i looked through the pictures. I mean, we went on lockdown at the, i guess, middle of march, and i looked through the photos that ive taken since then all the way up until now and i get emotional. Very emotional. A good photograph, by the way, is all about creating emotion. Its about in the person and whoevers looking at it, right . I tell everybody that if you want to take a great shot, its about approaching it with the emotion there. If you just simply shoot a photograph of whats happening in front of you, you mightit might be emotional. It might be emotional if somethings happening that is just dramatic, or makes you feel a certain way. So one of the things i always advise people is as you take that picture, as the photographer yourself, look at what youre looking at and ask yourself the question, hhow do i want to feel . And then, as youre looking at those moments, use your eyes and try to capture exactly what you see that makes you feel that way. Dont just stand back and think, oh, now ive got to get a wide shot now, because sometimes its not about the wide shot. Its about just the finger tips touching the glass, and seeing the breath on the glass, and the grandmothers reflection in the window because thats what you saw, and then you go and capture that moment, too, and, wow youve got a great shot. I love that description. Now, your wife chrissy, is an identical twin. Youve been photographing her and her sister, kimmy, throughout the pandemic. There are some of the most beautiful images that youve done, especially because of the intimacy of it. Instagram page has over 100,000 followers. This is stunning, how did it come about . We call them the chin twins. Thats the lake outside of our house, which was frozen at the time. Ive been photographing these two girls, ladies, my wife and my sisterinlaw for 26 years. We met in the early 90s in milan. I fell in love immediately, and theyve been my muses ever sense. Its been an incredible, sort of, process for me, and i have that chemistry with these two. If you think about someone in your family, in your life who you have chemistry with, its a wonderful thing to do a photo essay with a person like that. Nigel, before i let you go, i said, of course, you are worldrenowned photographer. However, the most requested question often is, how do i take a great selfie . I have a couple of tricks. One of the things that is sort of a pet peeve of mine, and heres my camera, is that people tend to go really high and take the picture from low, right . In order to captureget rid of the double chin, but when was the last time you saw a fashion photographer stand up right above your head and take a picture right down onto you . Never, right . Because if you do that, yes, you get rid of the double chin. However, you also get a big head and a small body because whatever is closest to the cameras going to look really big. So heres the trick, all right . [laughing] were going to do it together. Okay. Get your camera ready. Hold it out in front of you. I got it. We gonna call this the turtle, because to get rid of that double chin, were going to lift our chin high. And feel thatyoure not going to look pretty doing this. Youre going to feel the muscle tighten, and then youre going to come down, youre going to look straight into the camera, and youre going to gi i yourest magnum, and then youre going to take the picture. Now you got three or four seconds before the turkey gobble comes down. So be quick, be ready, and dont forget, smize. Smize all right, nigel, thank you so much. Sending our love to your wife, your children, your sisterinlaw. It sounds like a great thing you guys have got going on there. We appreciate the advice. Thank you, nigel. Oh, my pleasure. Thank you, tamron, really appreciate it. Here i go, one more. Coming up, no more sweats, no more pjs, and no more athleisure wear. Stacy london is here to talk about our wardrobe reset. For most people loungewear around the house, aka athleisure, has been the goto work from home outfit. I even saw a few articles that said there is a high demand for pajamas appropriate to wear on Video Conference calls, but my next guest says its time for it to stop. Our comfy wear has basically worn itself out. Stacy london spent ten seasons as host of the hit show what not to wear. Shes here to help some of our tamfam members know whats best to wear in a wardrobe reset. Stacy joins us from her home in brooklyn, new york. Stacy, so great to see you. Ive known you, of course, for many, many years. Never thought we would be talking under these circumstances, thats for sure. You said that we are, you know, its time for us to get fully dressed. These quarantine outfits weve gotten comfortable in, its time to reset. Why do you believe that is so pressing right now . Well, i do believe everybody is really anxious to get back out there, but at the same time we are kind of anxious about what to wear. So, you know, what ive been saying all of this time during quarantine is, hey, weve got nothing else to do. Do your spring cleaning, get yourself organized, but also this is a great time for you to play and experiment with the things you already have in your closet. So the idea that maybe you can reinvent and reset your wardrobe doesnt have to cost you any money at all. We have one tamfam member thats been stuck in her comfort clothes, and she says, as youve advised, that she is ready to get dressed again. Lets take a look at her story. Hey, tamron i need some help. Ive been super cozy at home wearing workout clothes and sweats. I miss being fashionable. I have a ton of great pieces in my closet that have been collecting dust over the past few months. I need some inspiration to mix and match what i already have in my wardrobe. There you have it, stacy. You said that the first thing that victoria needs to do, and im sure many of us have thought about it since weve been stuck in the house, is to get better organized. Thats right. I say, before you throw anything away, before you make any outfits, if you organize your closet by color and by stylelets say skirts, pants, dresses, it lets you see what you own and what you actually have. So for me, i know when it comes to summer time, i love white dresses, but if i line all of my white dresses up, chances are i dont need all of the white dresses that i own, and then you can decide whether you want to donate them to charity, or put them on consignment. We usually tend to buy the same things that we like over and over and over again, and until you organize them by color and style, you cant really see how much you have of everything. Okay, well i know you and victoria had a little time together via zoom. Lets take a look. Hey victoria, how are you doing . Hi, stacy. Im doing great. I want to talk to you today about some of your favorite pieces, and some of the pieces in your closet you may not know what to do with. Its kind of nice to kind of refresh your wardrobe and look at it with new eyes. So one way to do that is to take one of your favorite outfits and see if theres a new way Something Else in your wardrobe that we could use. I love these pants, especiallyi got them at a vintage store, and they just fit perfectly. A very easy way to kind of liven up an outfit thats got a printed pant is to actually do a printed top. Oh, my god. I love this. Yeah . This looks totally awesome to me. The difference here is that you dont ever have to match, as i always say, you just have to go. Show me something that you have a harder time wearing. Sheer, its like more of a kimono, kind of boxy, and i love it, but i havent found that many ways to wear it. Lets take the organza and turn it into sort of like aalmost like a blazer. Yes. Do you have the belt onon the jeans . Yes. Okay, so take it off the jeans, close the kimono, and belt the kimono. That way its a little bit more fitted, and we get a waistline. To show me somethinganother thing that you maybe havent worn so much of. These jeans that i got at a clothing swap, and they have this gold belted front that im not really sure if its supposed to be dressy or casual. I think we should try dressing this up a little bit. Its so geniusly bianca jagger, 1970s, i love it. All right, stacy. And so obviously we saw victoria style the snakeskin pants, which i think i own something very similar, but you say look at our closets, find something unique, and build around it. That, actually, i think, makes you feel better, too. Yeah. Absolutely. I mean, obviously, your closet should be a place of joy. When you go to get dressed you should be having fun. It shouldnt be misery, and one thing that i find is that its really nice to kind of use things in the opposite way. That organza jacket could have been really dressy, but to make it casual kind of made it cooler, and then with jeans, because it had the hardware instead of making that casual, we decided to dress that up. So you can look at things with new eyes. Thats what is so great about clothing is that we get to decide how we want to wear it. We can find ways to make me clothes more flexible and last longer. You know, i like that line, look at things with new eyes. Were doing that in so many ways. I mean, like i said, were stuck in the house r su a lg ti. Cuph,e,diy horojes, an to freshen up. Your closet is an extension, obviously, of really how we can feel, to your point. So why not look at it through a new lens, fresh eyes as we kind of reset everything in our lives hopefully in the right direction. Well, stacy, its so great to see you again. Thank you so much for joining us. Thank you for having me. Thanks, tamron. Okay. By the way, make sure you check out stacys Instagram Live series, fashion and feelings. Coming up, your face mask can do more than just protect you. Listen, there some creative canvases out there. These designers that we have coming up are just shaking up the game with their face mask designs. Find out how, next. The conversation continues on our social media platforms, facebook, twitter, youtube, and instagram, and visit us at tamronhallshow. Com. Lets talk about it and get through this together. Welcome back. My executive producer, candi carter, is always talking about, what is the must have item this summer . I said, candi, there is one item that is the must have, a face mask. In many Public Places it is mandatory to cover up, but the designers youre about to see, well, they have taken the mask game to a whole new level. They believe it doesnt have to hide your individuality. Even though were all a little bit stressed out over this, this can be somewhat of a relief to have fun with it, and instead they say lets express ourselves. Theyve chosen creative canvases to do that. Let me introduce you to some of them. Shukuru is a designer from atlanta who says sequins are selfexpression. Ashley nell tipton is a designer in san diego who is influenced by her mexican heritage. Tia adeola is a designer from new york who says the renaissance era inspired this bold mask, and Lirika Matoshi is from new york. She uses ribbons and frills to show that whimsical style. Thank you all for being here. Okay, you can lower your masks now. I want to be able to hear you when you talk. So hear me out. Shukuru, ill start with you. You were designing dresses when the pandemic put everything on hold, and you pivoted to masks. You said your mask can provide a sense of escapism. What do you mean by that . Well, i mean that, with theeaness of the pan th tuwhich is very sterile. So the sequins is an offshoot of what we already do. So this mask right now, thats definitely escapism. Thats a bit above and beyond just the normal mask. Its so beautiful, i love how you also tied in with your headdress, its just such a flow. It is as beautiful as you can imagine. Ashley, viewers may recognize you as the winner of season 14 of project runway. You actually made a collection of masks before the virus. How did you know wed all be Wearing Masks . Well, Billie Eilish was one of our inspirations who was wearing a mask at the emmys, and we saw that, and we felt like this was going to be a fashion trend, and we wanted to make masks that represent my hispanic culture, and be able to allow other people having worked in china and seen how much of our business was being affected by the pandemic that was happening that we kind of was already feeling like something was going to happen, and we know they were already Wearing Masks. So we saw this trend kind of coming ahead of us, and we wanted to catch it before everyone else jumped on, and we had so much fabric that we had stopped production of our own plussize clothing to provide fabric for our masks. Weve been able to create over 6,000 masks for donations for front line, and about 15,000 for consumers who are purchasing. I love that, tia let me bring you into the conversation. You normally make ready to Wear Clothing but decided to make masks as a way to showcase power and change the narrative. Tell me more about that. So my generation is gen z, and im convinced that gen z is going to change the world, and when covid happened i was like, i have to take my interests, my inspiration, and put it into what everyone needs, which is face mask. To sort of make something that are required more fun, and something people will actually want to wear. So my main source of inspiration where my clothes as a whole is the renaissance. Ruffles are really big in the renaissance, so i thought, why not take that narrative, reclaim it and make it something modern and cool and fun that women as a whole would want to wear . Well, they are beautiful. Lirika, let me go to you. You said you felt responsible to take action. The proceeds for your masks went to those affected by covid and to the black lives Matter Movement. Tell me about your designs. During the beginning of the pandemic, and inspired by the black lives Matter Movement, i felt responsible to take action and to help the people in need by giving away all of the proceeds from the masks. My idea was to recreate our wellknown designs, such as the strawberry dress and the rainbow tulle dresses, into masks. Let me tell you, you all have just shaken up the game. I have seen many of your designed masks on social media. I was excited to talk with all of you. I cannot wait to buy some of them, and i love even more that youre able to not only give to others in need, but youre also educating in the process through your arts. Thank you, ladies. Congratulations on your success. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you so much. You can head over to our social media for more information on how to find those masks, go to tamronhallshow. Com to get all of the details. Listen, were spending a lot of time on social media, were spending a lot of time perusing through instagram, checking out things, and i love the fact that your fashion bomb daily started as a personal journey for you back in 2006. You are an ivy league graduate, but you were finding your voice in the social media world, and in the fashion world. How did that collide . I began it because i had this dream of working in fashion. One of my biggest dreams was to work at a glossy fashion magazine. For whatever reason, i just kept hitting different roadblocks. Blogging was very new at the time, and i had a webmaster who suggested that i start a blog. I didnt think it was a good idea, but i just went for it. What i decided to focus on was women who didnt really see themselves reflected it in fashion magazines. Women of color, curvy women, women from all different backgrounds, socioeconomic backgrounds, and so we always like to say at fashion bomb daily, we cover everything from the hood to haute couture. I love that. You know, i actually learned about your blog several years ago. My cousin called me from houston, texas, and said youre on fashion bomb daily, and i dont think claire likes her outfit. I was like, oh, my god who is claire . What has happened here . Since then, ive been lucky enough to appear with compliments on your blog many, many times. I think that what people really enjoy also, claire, is that you do help us find these pieces. You know, you have kept a log from beyonce to rihanna, as i said, even i think we said we have a couple of pictures of things that ive worn on the show that youve located for fans. How do you do that . Do you call the stylist . How do you find these things . Well, first off, tamron, i have to say that your cousin was incorrect. I love your style. I think you are one of the best dressed women in the world. So i think i started writing about your style because people would write in asking us who you were wearing, and especially now more so on your show, as well. Every time you step out you look fabulous, but how we find it is just research. I mean, thankfully with your show, you do have a tab on your website where you do tell what youre wearing. For me, its about research. When i was first Getting Started in magazine journalism, i was a researcher and reporter. That was my job, just to research and find out different things, but now, over the course of several years weve built great relationships with stylists, with designers, and with celebrities, as well. So now we can reach out to celebrities, and a lot of them write us back and they just tell us who theyre wearing. You talk about being a researcher, and really digging into this fashion world. Youve used your platform in a very powerful way. You have gone out, and you have been tireless in your search for emerging designers, designers of color, thisugy suesul pla that youve created to help others get through this fashion door that is so often closed to your point, whether its plus size, whether its people who arent from the new york or la area. Why is that so important to you . When i first started in 2006, there were only two designers of color, two black designers, who showed during fashion week, and this issue of diversity and inclusion has been a very big one, and a very poignant one over the course of several years. For me, im always looking to be the change that i want to see in the world, and if i see wonderful designers who might need help with promotion, who might need help with marketing, who might even need help connecting with different stylists to place their items on celebrities, then i felt i could be a vessel and use my platform to make that happen. I am so proud of you for doing that. I mean, that is such a powerful testimony, especially in these times where we are looking for ways to connect people, for ways to help emerging designers, and retailers and people say constantly, support small businesses, support designers of color. Youve given them a marketplace to do that. Now, you have someone you want to introduce that you are really into these days. Tell me a little bit about this designer that you like right now. Yeah, so we have so many designers including collection, who im wearing today, but the designer were going to speak to, her name is sai sankoh. She has evolved into a designer with summer resortready print and caftans, and i just love her. Wow. Everything about her designs are absolutely fabulous. Look at that. Isnt that amazing . Let me bring in sai. As you mentioned shes standing by. Sai joins us now from her home in dallas, texas, a place i know very well. Sai, your collection is beautiful. I have to tell you that the green flowing looks like youre just looking through the earth. I look forward to having an occasion where i can wear somethingim ready to get out of the house but tell me about your collection. What was the inspiration . First of all, tamron, thank you so much for having me on your show. My inspiration basically was i dont know how to swim, and when i go to resorts, i always want to look amazing and i dont want to get my hair wet. I want to be glamorous and i want to be fabulous, and i want to be colorful and bright and cheerful. So a lot of inspiration comes from that, and from my motherland sierra leone which is in west africa. So thats what i use to create those prints and to create caftans and just resort wear. Whenever youre out and about, youre happy and colorful, and just being a showstopper. Listen, when you started this in 2006, as i say with the start of the show, we would say, lets talk about it. We had no idea wed be talking about these things, the pandemic, and protests. You had no idea that you were building this platform that would help young emerging designers survive when the outlook is something that no one can map out at this point. So congratulations, claire, on all youve done. Sai, thank you so much for joining us. That caftan is beautiful. Ill have to reach out to you very soon on that. Good luck with everything. Claires site is fashion bomb daily. Her book the bomb life, by the way, it is also available now. Coming up, its easy to fix a fashion mistake. Welcome back. You are lucky if youve never made a fashion mistake or a spontaneous decision that you look back on and you certainly regret, but when it comes to tattoos, a lot of people have struggled with reversing that difficult decision made. Yes, it mightve been trendy or cool at the time, but as it turns out in some situations the tattoo is a painful reminder, even hurtful reminder, of ones past. Now, full disclosure, i have a tattoo, a couple, and i am not planning on getting rid of either one of them, but i understand the journey of our next guest. Tattoo artist, ryan king, says he is making it his mission to erase the mistakes that people have made in body art. Hes offered to cover up symbols of hate for free, no questions asked. Desiree peveler had tattoo of a Confederate Flag on her hip that she came to regret over the years. And she contacted ryan to see if he could help her journey. Ryan and desiree join us now from murray, kentucky, and charleston, indiana. Thank you both for joining us. Desiree, its so interesting that were talking about this. Obviously, you know whats going on in the conversation and debate regarding the Confederate Flag. Take me to what it looked likethe tattoo before, and your decision to get it in the first place. Well, it started off as me and my best friend, impulse decision, decided we wanted to go get matching tattoos. Were from the country, so weve always kind of seen it as a symbol of the country and didnt really know the true meaning behind it. So we went and got Confederate Flag stars on our hips. When did you come to realize that it was something that you did not want on your body any longer . I remember hearing a story on the news that someone had taken down a Confederate Flag at a capitol building, and im like, why did they do that . You know, like, i dont understand. You know, its a southern state, so why is it such a big deal . Well, i did more research into it and found out that a lot of hateful groups use this symbol not the way that i was raised to think that it was used. So in comes someone like ryan. Ryan, youve been flooded with messages from people since you sent out your call to action. Ive got to tell you, ive been reporting now 27 plus years. I remember doing stories back in my chicago days of reporting of gang members who were not able to get jobs because they had these tattoos, and they needed them removed, but its very, very expensive, its very, very time consuming. So you decided to offer this for free. What moved you to do this . It was really the bravery of just everyday citizens doing black lives Matter Movement and the protests that inspired a lot of emotions and feelings. We came back to the shop after the coronavirus, and it was an idea that weve all been thinking during this pandemic, and during this great revolution that we have here about equality and justice. I love that. So desiree, you got your tattoo changed. I saw the tattoo before, let see the after. What did you do to cover her tattoo up . Well, theres a lot of dark areas, so we used a lot of dark color to fade that inward. I noticed when she came in, she had a doctor who tshirt. Ive got a lot of scifi a nerdy stuff all over my station, and we just kind of instantly clicked. I was like, you like doctor who, all right. Were doing space and stars, and were doing some nice rainbow colors, really set off the equality feel. Tell me. Now it is no longer part of your body, how does that feel . Do you feel liberated from it . How do you describe it . That would be the best way for me to describe it. I feel so much better. I was ignorant for not doing the Proper Research before getting the tattoo, and thanks to ryan i now have something beautiful to look at to remind me that im a different person. Ive grown a lot. Listen, do not feel bad about the past. Its about what we do when we learn, and how we correct the things that, lord knows, weve all done wrong and made mistakes in our lives. Thank you, ryan, desiree. We really appreciate your time. Thank you so much. Thank you. Up next, he calls them random acts of beauty. Thats next. m buzz chhoney nut cheerios are heart chhealthy and can help lower cholesterol. man mmmmm. buzz did you just mmmmm . Welcome back. During the height of the pandemic in new york city, florist lewis miller wanted to find a way to honor front line workers. He and his team created these gorgeous pop up floral art installations in unexpected locations. Now, theyre called flower flashes, and they sprouted up in old pay phone booths, trash cans, construction sites, and even outside a new york city hospital. Lewis miller joins us from his home in new york city. Lewis, ive lived in new york now for over 11 years. I didnt even realize there were still phone booths out there. So im happy you found an amazing way to bring beauty around the cities. You actually had to take down that arrangement outside the hospital about 30 minutes after it went up, but you found a better use for those flowers. We did. Thats actually the first time weve had to do that. I mean, weve been doing these flower flashes for four years now, and weve done nearly 80 of them. That one, we had the whole thing set up, and security came Walking Around and are like, you know, you need to move it. They pointed to an area literally 10 feet away where they said we could put it up. So we said, you know, were just going to take the flowers away, take a picture, and we donated all of the flowers and it went tothey went to hospital workers, and, you know, they had a good life. They got a second chance. Third chance, actually. You started actually doing these flower flashes four years ago. How did they take on new meaning in the times that we live in now . Well, i mean, my philosophy is flowers are there to bring joy, and even when times were good us new yorkers needed that little dopamine rush. That something unexpected, and definitely in the days that we are living more than ever it is such a vital and necessary thing. So there was no way i was going to stop now because, you know, like i said, more than ever we need some ray of light. Now, how long does it take you to create . I mean, i have my Little Flower arrangement behind me. My peonies inside of the little vase there. How long does it take you to create one of these structures . Its just stunning. I like them to go fast. I mean, typically an average trash bin flash takes 15 to 20 minutes. The more complicated ones like the one outside the hospital, that was 45 minutes, but its still very, very fast. The whole idea is we roll in, its dark, and its called a flash for a reason. Its very spontaneous and guttural way to design, and my preferred method. You now, i fancy myself a flower child. I love flowers. I try to keep them in my home, my parents kept a garden growing outside when i was a kid. So congratulations on bringing this little slice of beauty to all of our lives. If youre not in new york city, and you cant see them, you can go on social media. People share the love and the joy of what youve created. Lewis miller, congratulations, and thank you for making that personal sacrifice at a time you could just be thinking about your business. You are thinking about other people and how to bring a smile to our faces through something so lovely. Thank you. Thank you. Well, thats our show. Weve packed it all in, and, you know what, were going to see you next time.
