On vacation. I have to be honest, i was nervous that wouldnt be your answer, because there have been some amazing guest hosts this summer. So heres the thing. In moments of crisis, people come to me, because they think i am really olivia pope. I am not a crisis manager, but i did do a Little Research on three simple things you can do today to support the Postal Service. So, here we go. Number one. Buy a lot of stamps. I bought so many stamps this weekend i think i could send a jet ski to the ukraine. I dont know why i would do that, but i could. Number two, call your representatives in the house and the senate at the number on your screen. Say how important it is for them to support the Postal Service, during this critical time. Take a screen shot, right now, before we change the chiron. Okay. Number three, tune into the dnc, the Democratic National convention. This week to learn about leaders who believe everyone should be able to vote. Imagine, even people who vote by mail. Speak of voting, today is the anniversary of the 19th amendment which gave women the right to vote. Yeah, but i dont know how to do it. Do you, like go out into the street and just scream it, like this is who i want to be president . And then that counts as voting . Hes kind of handling things out of control, because he wants people to go to school, but a lot of people are getting sick. All i know is that hes going nuts. Does trump do bad things . Kind of. So were taping this before night two of the dnc where you are a keynote speaker, but were airing it afterwards, so im just going to go ahead and say you were brilliant, you were brilliant, because im sure you were. Thank you so much. Yes, of course. Did you watch night one, in particular, did you watch Michelle Obama . I dont think anyone was allowed not to watch it. She was glorious, just glorious. So i actually put a word out to my social media followers that i was going to be talking to you, which everybody was crazy excited about. So they sent in some questions. Im going to go back and forth between their questions and mine. If we live in nonswing states, what can we do to get the blue vote out in key swing states . So, i would encourage you to go to fairfight. Com. Thats exactly what we to. We are working to protect voters in swing states, that means getting thousands of volunteers. We have 67,000 already. We know the opposition has 50,000 lined up to intimidate voters. So we need to double their numbers. Wed love to have your support. Fairfight. Com, well get you signed up and ready to work. Voter suppression is really your mission. Its your passion to fight that. Can you explain whats been going on with the post office and mailin voting leading up to november . Sure. So lets understand that Voter Suppression is any time you prevent or discourage someone from voting. And because we know theres a wave coming, unfortutely, donald trump and his cronies have decided to steal the vote by scaring us out of mailin voting. They know this is one of the best ways to vote in a pandemic. So what weve watched in the last few weeks is an attempt by louis dejoy of the Postal Service to slow down the mail, removed postal boxes, removed mailboxes and doing every nefarious thing you can imagine. What they have decided, though, is to walk that back. They are going to make certain that voting does work in america by mail. But heres the thing. We know its not over. Theyre going to try again. And the most important thing is to not panic. We can vote by mail, we can vote early in person, we have vote on election day, but dont let them steal your success by scaring you out of using your tools. So the biggest thing we can do to fight Voter Suppression is vote. Absolutely. And, no matter which state you live in, you have about three options. There are only about ten states that limit you. Almost every state you can vote by mail, in person early, and you can vote on election day. If you go to vote. Org, they can tell you what your options are, no matter which state you live in. So dejoy testifies before the senate on friday. Ifere gontvi him, if you were questioning him, what would your first question be . If you believe in our democracy, then your responsibility is to support it, not to undermine it. What he has done since he took office is undermine access. And worst, hes undermined confidence. And, as i said, its not just preventing you from voting but discouraging you from voting. And the panic that has ensued, because people believing that the post office, which has been around as long as the republic, can no longer be trusted is a terrible thing to do to americans. I hope he has learned his lesson and will do better. What should we do to make sure every vote is counted. First, we have to overwhelm them with our presence. That means make a plan. Dont think that just the latest attempt to scare us out of voting that theyre going to abandon their efforts. Make a plan to vote. Thats why i talk about all three ways that you can vote in almost every state. Number two, show up in force, and dont show up alone. Whether thats virtual, using your social media, make sure people you know, people you like, people you kind of, eh, no matter who they are, make sure they check their registration, make a plan themselves and vote as well. When we overwhelm with our presence, we get the democracy we deserve. This is a question i love from le shawn on twitter. Considering the direct impact local policies have on our lives, how can we motivate americans to spend as much as time thinking about our local politics as we do our national politics. Not just focussing on the top of the ticket. How do we get people to focus on whats happening in their own neighbods anit will be affected in the next election. I start by asking people what are you concerned about . Typically, theyre not going to give you a national issue. Connect the dots for them. Make sure they understand, if you are concerned about people in your community being arrested at unfair rates, talk about your mayor. If youre concerned about how your kids are being educated, that means you need to vote in the school board. If your trash doesnt get picked up enough, thats a county commission issue sometimes. And the most important thing is, make sure you participate in the 2020 census. Thats how they draw the lines for everything that happens from school board all the way to the presidency. How does the census play into all this . Theyre stopping the census early, right . Right now they plan to stop it early. And if they do, that means theyre going to erase millions of people from the story of america. Namely communities of color and the poor. It is dangerous. It is going to cost the communities money but steal their political power. Instead of counting them theyre going to guess. Its called imputation. It is a terrible thing to do when you have cut short the actual count. Its going to not only hurt your communities now. Imagine a decade of not having any of the resources you need while those communities that have more than enough get even more of what you deserve. We need to make certain we fill out the census for economic power and political power. Stacey, i love you so much. In these times, people can feel so helpless and paralyzed with fear and anxiety, and you always give us tangible things that we can do, starting today, to make a real difference. The demonstration is part of a day of activism tarped country and comes on the 57th anniversary of Martin Martins match on washington. A few hundred people kbaerd in downtown oakland, protesting in solidarity with jacob blake. Protesters gathered outside Oakland City Hall at about 8 00 tonight and began marching through downtown.
