Right now were going to go the scandal rocked Liberty University and its evangelical leader, Jerry Falwell jr. A former pool attendant, Giancarlo Granda, calls falwell a predator saying he engaged in sexual liaisons with falwells wife while falwell watched. Well talk with him in an exclusive interview. Deborah roberts has the latest, and a second allegation overnight from a former student at liberty. Good morning, deb. Reporter good morning, george. This is a scandal that seems to grow deeper and wider by the day for a man that was once at the top of his game in Christian Conservative circles. Now Jerry Falwell jr. Is not only out at the worlds top atis. This morning, that new allegation about the falwells coming from a former Liberty University student providing an anonymous account in politico alleging he had a sexual encounter with becki falwall, the wife of the schools former president Jerry Falwell jr. While he was a 22yearold. The falwells called the allegation false and mean spirited. It is the latest in a shocking string of scandals to hit one of the most influential families in the evangelical conservative movement. As our friendship has grown, so has my admiration for mr. Trump. Reporter a staunch advocate in republican politics, and for President Trump, falwell resigned from the college following a series of stunning developments. First, a racy photo he posted then took down from social media with his arm around his wifes assistant. He apologized for posting it saying, it was just in good fun from a costume party. Then that first jawdropping allegation of sexual impropriety that directly goes against the schools strict moral code. We are so proud of our students here at liberty, and its just such an honor to be able to serve alongside them, and we try to teach good family values and good morals. Reporter falwell accused by his 29yearold former business partner, Giancarlo Granda, of being aware of and even observing grandas affair with falwells wife, becki, though falwell denies any involvement. Granda says he met them when he was a 20yearold pool attendant in 2012 and their relationship took off from there lasting years. He provided this audio recording as proof. His new thing is like telling me every time he hooks up with people, like i dont have feelings or something. Youre going to make her jealous. Not trying to do that. Reporter granda says he vacationed with the falwells, even went into business with them owning a miami youth hostel. In this email shared exclusively with abc news granda says falwell offered a glowing recommendation for him to apply to Georgetown University in 2018. Calling him a quick study on all business related matters, consistent, dependable and someone who has operated with the highest Business Ethics and integrity. But the relationship later soured. Now the falwells are accusing granda of extortion, claiming he threatened to go public with the affair unless he was paid millions. But granda denies that allegation. Overnight, the falwells declining to comment on grandas allegations. Falwell has reached out to numerous news organizations over the last week including abc news and so has his wife becki, both vigorously denying most of grandas claim, and both say theyre victims of a man who tried to take advantage of them. No word yet from the couple on this newest allegation. George . Okay, deb, thanks very much. Lets bring in Giancarlo Granda right now. Thank you for joining us this morning. Lets begin with their denial. They say that you had an affair with mrs. Falwell, but Jerry Falwell jr. Was not involved in any way. But you say from the start they were both involved . First off, thank you for having me on. And jerrys lying. That was his game plan from the beginning, to st throw her under the bus, which i think speaks a lot about who he is, about his character. And he was aware from day one of our relationship, and he did, in fact, watch. How would that work . Describe the encounters. So lets go back to when i first met them. I was 20 years old working at the Fontainebleau Hotel working my way through college. And, you know, im talking to some guests, and i notice this woman behind me staring at me. She was noticeably drunk, and she was just flirting with me. You know, then we started flirting back and forth. And then towards the end of my work shift, shes like, hey, do you want to go back to my hotel room . And as a single 20yearold im like, yeah, of course, and then shes like, but my husband wants to watch, and immediately i thought it was a bit strange, and i backed off. She said, oh, no, but hes not going to do anything. Hes just going to sit in the corner, and he just wants to watch, and its his thing. She mentioned that they were actually at a Swingers Club the night before, miami velvet, but it wasnt their thing. They said it was kind of gross because there were too many people and they wanted a more intimate session. So i had no idea who they were at the time. After my work shift, they called me through a blocked number to schedule where to meet, and we met at another hotel. And i walk into the lobby and, you know, becki is sitting there, waiting for me, and we were both nervous at the time. And then she offered me whiskey to relax, to calm my nerves. We talked for a bit. I relaxed, and then we went upstairs, and jerry was laying on the bed. He was laying on the bed. He was drunk, and he was giggling. And again im kind of weirded out at this moment, and i said, hey, if at any point you get jealous or want me to back off, just let me know, and ill walk out of here. Hes like, no, no, just go for it. Thats how it began. This would then happen on other occasions as well, and what would he be doing . Right, i mean, he i dont want to go too much into the details. I dont want to go too much into the details, but he enjoyed watching. They say now that youre trying to extort them. Why come forward now . This started seven years ago. So, again, so going back to that time i you know, after that fontainebleau or the hotel, you know, that first night, shortly after we had a Weekend Getaway in the florida keys. And this trip, you know, we were doing our you know, the nature of the relationship continued there. And, you know, i mentioned to them that when i was younger, right, when i was in high school, i suffered with video game addiction. You know, at the time i was timid, a bit nervous, and i believe, now in hindsight, they spotted these weaknesses and made me an ideal target. I shared, you know, this passion project of mine where its a company that would connect video gamers suffering from video game addiction to families with health coaches. And he said, oh, i think thats an excellent idea and, you know, actually you could probably partner up with liberty. You know, you should come to new york with us. Were having a business trip and we can talk more about it. And then at this trip in new york city, we stayed at a hotel on park avenue, and he said, look, i really like your idea, but before you can ever help anyone, you need to make a lot of money yourself. So and this is jerry saying this. He was, like, i have a background in real estate. Pick a property in miami. Pick a handful of properties and well get the best one and youll get a 25 ownership stake in it, and thats exactly what i did. They suggest you targeted them and that you may have targeted other successful women. Thats false. Thats ridiculous. Thats just them trying to smear me. I think its kind of ridiculous to think this 20yearold with not many resources i dont come from a family of a lot of money was targeting and preying upon this power couple that have all the political connections and all the money in the world. Again, i feel like i was an ideal target for them. President trumps former attorney, Michael Cohen, is claiming he had contact with your attorney about personal photos of the falwells that they didnt want released publicly. Did you or your lawyers ever speak with Michael Cohen about the falwells . What do you know about the photos of the falwells . What do you know about their relationship with Michael Cohen . Michael cohen corrected himself and said he met the attorney of a third party that was suing us. Theres a demand letter where they were threatening to expose the nature of this relationship, and thats, you know, the best of my knowledge thats what went on, and ill never forget it. Winter of 2014 around november, december, becki called me, and shes like, hey, that lawsuit in florida, you know, those guys that are suing us, dont worry about it. Michael cohen is going to take care of it, something to that effect. I had no idea who he was. I didnt know him, and im, like, okay, great. We dont have to worry about this because again, they were trying they were threatening to reveal the nature of this relationship, and i lived through hell at that time. I was it was a nightmare. So thats all i have to say about that. What do you want to happen now . Ive been wanting to cut ties. Again, i have an equity stake in the company, which they offered. I have an equity stake in the company. It has value, and i want to cut ties, and within the operating agreement theres a selling mechanism. I have every right to want to sell my equity stake. I just want to cut ties. Thats all i ever wanted to do. I never asked for more than what was promised to me, and jerry himself memorialized this offer through text messages. One final question. You also allege Jerry Falwell jr. Sent a compromising photo of a Liberty University student to you. He said it was a friend of his daughterinlaw and not sexual in any way. What can you tell us . Look, i dont know the context of the photo. All i know, i was with him and becki at a hotel in miami beach. We were having drinks. They ordered me drinks, and he sent me the picture, and i tried to act cool about it. I didnt want to overreact, but immediately i thought it was bizarre, you know, considering the nature of our relationship, and at that moment im, like, something more is going on here. I dont like this, but i didnt say anything. I didnt know what to do. But, again, i dont know the context behind it. Whatever explanation you get, its fine. The point is, its why did he have that picture . Why did he share it . And why was he joking about it . He publicly said he was joking about it. I think that should raise some questions. Giancarlo granda, thanks for your time this morning. Thank you. Well be right back. Ll be right back. Liberty mutual customizes your car insurance, so you only pay for what you need. Youll remember this inspiring medical student we surprised in our make your monday series. We have a really great update to tell you about. Yeah, Russell Ledet from lake charles, louisiana which was hit really hard by hurricane laura. How hes lending a helping hand. Thats a great story coming up. Well begin with President Trump and that big speech last night officially accepting his partys nomination for a second time in a way thats never been done before. The white house was a purely partisan stage. Trump made his case that this is the most important election in history and posed a stark choice between him and joe biden, all before a packed audience on the south lawn. You see it right there. Lets go back to mary bruce who was there as well. Good morning, mary. Reporter good morning, george. Well, we have never seen a Convention Like this. The peoples house transformed into what last night felt very much like a campaign rally. For over an hour, the president touted his record in the midst of these crises and used a series of misleading claims to go after joe biden. Overnight, President Trump reveling in the moment. It was something weve never seen before, the south lawn of the white house converted into a packed convention floor, nearly 2,000 supporters, no social distancing and very few masks. The fact is im here. The fact is were here, and theyre not. Reporter going on the attack, trump called out joe biden by name 41 times, arguing his opponent is a danger to america. Reporter biden tweeting throughout fired back. Remember, every example of violenump de ppened on his watch deurg esenc a stark contrast. Protesters demanding change and Racial Justice saying the president has divided the nation and doing their best to disrupt his remarks. Now, President Trump is eager to get back out on the campaign trail. Hes heading to New Hampshire today, and is expected to travel to other key battleground states in the coming weeks. Joe biden is also looking to get back out there. He is eyeing trips to key states like arizona and wisconsin in the coming weeks, but says only if he can do so in accordance with the local safety guidelines, george. Mary bruce, thanks very much. Now to the future of tiktok in the u. S. As President Trump threatens to shut it down. Walmart could be teaming up with microsoft to buy the wildly popular social media platform. Rebecca jarvis is here with more on this. Good morning, rebecca. Reporter good morning, cecilia. And the key question here is why would retail giant walmart want to own tiktok, the app, which is a social media app for many people where they sing and dance . Well, heres the answer. Tiktok has 100 million u. S. Users, most of them are young and this gives walmart access to a lot of young customers. It would potentially even give them a leg up on the 800pound gorilla in the retail space, amazon, and, remember, this is an app owned by a chinese company, its raised some security concerns with the u. S. Government, and earlier this year, President Trump gave them a handful of weeks to come to a conclusion to sell their u. S. Assets to a u. S. Buyer. Microsoft is interested as well because it would give them access to a social media asset, and in the next handful of days we could be learning that tiktok, the u. S. Portion, the new zealand portion, australia and canada has been sold for between 20 billion and 30 billion, janai. All right. Rebecca, thank you so much. Some good headlines there, lara. Yeah. That was a great pop news. All right, now to our gma cover story. Were take a look at how several sleepaway camps successfully avoided coronavirus outbreaks an to schools to help keep students safe. Trevor ault is at a camp on long island with more on that new cdc study. Trevor, good morning. Reporter good morning, janai. Here at crestwood Country Day Camp they had 600 campers this summer session and zero covid19 cases. The long island Camp Association opened 15 camps. They only reported cases at one of them and contained it to just five positive tests. Now, they credit their multiple diligent precautions and this morning the cdc says schools can learn a lot from camps like this. As the summer fun comes to an end and students head out of camp and into the classroom, its not just the children learning lessons. The planning was key. I mean, obviously we wanted everybody to be safe. Reporter a cdc study has powerful new takeaways for mitigating covid outbreaks, citing the success of four summer camps in maine. We called them layers to mitigation. It wasnt one thing that was going to keep everybody safe. Reporter their guide to success, a mandatory 14day quarantine prior to the start of camp, frequent cleaning, mask protocols and maximizing outdoor space. Then having campers quarantine in pods which they called neighborhoods or families for the first two weeks of camp. We decided to call their bunk or their cabin, their family, and when youre with your family, you dont dont need to be masked and you can talk with your family and be with your family. Reporter experts like dr. Laura blaisdell says it can be used in schools. Tip number one, diligence and consistency. Masking everybody, its maintaining distance all the time. Reporter tip two, layered safety protocols. Its the layering of all of these Public Health layers, masking, distancing, ventilation, screenings that allows us to see the strength and the robust nature in preventing Communicable Disease spread. Reporter and tip three, create a culture of compliance. Going to schools or camps or colleges is a privilege this year and we all need to take care of one another and do what we can. Reporter of course, not every summer camp was so fortunate. Georgias high harbor camp had hundreds of campers test positive despite precautions and only being open for four days. Because the camp was mostly outdoors, i didnt understand how it could have happened based on the precautions and the space. Reporter a cdc report found their staff were Wearing Masks but campers werent and frequent shouting and chanting didnt help. [ crowd chanting ] reporter but others like crestwood Country Day Camp on long island it did not spread. Thats pretty awesome. Reporter are wrapping up the Summer Season with zero covid cases. It is not the same, but what the study adds is that if one is diligent about multilayering Public Health interventions, covid and the spread of covid can be mitigated. Reporter and the owner here at crestwood says their Health Measures of limiting groups and aggressive hand washing before and after every activity didnt just contain coronavirus, it also led to a huge dropoff in every other illness that the campers here were far healthier this year than theyve been any year before. Cecilia. Okay, trevor, thanks. Well stick with this theme of children in the pandemic, and now millions of kids starting their studies at home, parents are trying to set up for all this Remote Learning. But parents are running into a difficult shortage, desks. They are now in high demand and can be very expensive. Rebecca jarvis is back with our gma study guide series and some solutions, most importantly, hey, rebecca. Reporter hey again, cecilia. Thats right. So weve seen this now happen with laptops and computers and now its happening with desks. With so many families both working from home and now trying to do school from home, Office Furniture has seen a huge run on supplies, but some families have learned how to get by very creatively. When cherie loveless tried to buy a desk online, the less pricey options were completely out of stock. I looked on amazon, walmart, wayfair, everywhere. I couldnt find anything that would fit before we started school. Reporter in some parts of the country desks and chairs are as hard to come by as toilet paper and clorox wipes. Shoppers have discovered desks out of stock on back order and just plain sold out. From midjuly to midaugust a search rank on amazon for desks rose 600 to the number two spot just behind face masks. Online marketplace etsy said over the last three weeks, theyve seen more than 10,000 searches for homeschool, and their home Office Furniture category has seen incredible growth, up more than 300 from last year. Mainly driven by desk sales. Right now weve been seeing the more in stock and better pricing seems to be at amazon. Reporter but what can you do if you cant buy a desk . Cherie loveless got creative and made her daughter a desk out of an old tv stand. My friend posted on facebook that he had a tv stand for sale for 40. It took ten minutes to put together and its perfect for her. Reporter dana created a budgetfriendly study space for her daughters out of a kitchen table. I cut down the table on a table saw and then just put up two shelves and i believe the whole project probably cost me about 100. Reporter dallasbased Jessica Nickerson created three makeshift School Spaces for her grade school daughters by repurposing this vintage combo desk and side table. The furniture i got still flows with the room and so it feels right in the decor and they happen to be getting their whole education in these corners. Reporter and if youre not feeling particularly diy crafty, there are other options for inexpensive or free desks. The salvation army, goodwill, both places to check out and a number of churches, synagogues and mosques are currently Running Office supply furniture drives right now, cecilia, so check with your local community to see what they have too. Cecilia. All really great tips. Rebecca, thank you so much. More Remote Learning tips but now lets head back over to ginger. The series is taking a look at couples with a big age difference to find out if its true love or if its all about the money. Will reeve has one couples story. Will, good morning. Reporter good morning, and that story is a doozy. There is a 46year age din dinks, difference, accusations of gold digging abound. There is a yacht involved and if you believe it, plenty of drama. Do you have a lot of money . I dont but i have a connection. Reporter marrying millions is back on lifetime for a second season, bringing more drama with couples with vast differences in wealth and in this case age. I dont look at him and see someone that is older than my dad. Reporter there are 46 years between 23yearold erica and 69yearold rick sykes, the two of them meeting on social media. We went on a couple of dates and it moved very fast from there. The rest is what they call history, i guess. Reporter it was all aboard after that for captain rick and his first mate erica moving in together on ricks yacht in miami beach partnered now for over a year and a half saying age doesnt mean a thing. When i look at him, i dont notice the age gap. Its not something that we dwell on. Reporter but it may be overboard for ericas friends and family. Her father, 18 years younger than rick, voicing his concerns in what is sure to be drama this season. If we get married and settle down and get married and this is just not what i want. Coming up, the inspiring med student helping his hometown. Stay with us. Ng his hometown. Stay with us. Good morning, everyone. Im kumasi aaron. As part of our efforts to build a better bay area, we are focusing on the impact that the covid19 pandemic is having on our economy. A new study finds that e restaurant sales are down in San Francisco by 91 . Since the pandemic started mid march. The chamber of commerce received data from Credit Card Companies on city businesses. It doesnt include cash sales. I have some unfortunate news. The smoke is spreading. We have areas of fog. We have areas of smoke. We have areas of smog and thats what youre seeing from the explore tor yum there. San francisco just went unhealthy. For everybody. While oakland is now unhe wialt for those sensitive and weve got unhealthy air in the santa cruz mountains. Well have another update in about 30 minutes. Gma is next. Lately, ive been thinking i want you to be happier welcome back to gma this morning. We have an update from a man who has an inspiring story, made our monday earlier this week. You probably remember dr. Russell ledet, a medical student at the university where he used to be a Security Guard helping to make a change. Hes also one of the founders of 15 white coats, a group of medical students raising money to help minority students get into med school. We surprised him with this virtual visit from his favorite musician, guys, this was an absolutely amazing moment but a lot can change over the course of a week. Russells hometown lake charles, louisiana, weve been talking about it all week was hit hard by hurricane laura and russell is already, of course, working to help the Community Get come back and joining us live from baton rouge, russell, good morning, were so glad youre back with us. Can i tell you, im not surprised. Im not surprised. Jumped into action. Back out there already. Were so glad youre back but know you have family there and had a hard time tracking down your dad yesterday. How is everybody . Have you been able to talk to them . Yes, i was finally able to talk to my dad but it was only a few minutes because reception was terrible. Im doing everything i can but losing a lot of sleep but im okay with that because my city needs a lot of help. You spoke with the mayor of lake charles. What did he tell you . They need tarps. Ainss, ouenerthey need tarps, plant is destroyed. And so im going down there today but obviously i need a lot more help. If folks, russell, havent been to lake charles, theyre hearing about it from you for the first time, what do you want them to know about this community, your community . The community of lake charles is truly a melting pot. We work together, we are a Blue Collar Community and we do everything we can to try to help each other and this is a time where our resilience will be tested but resilience is in our dna, and i know a city like lake charles will bounce back. Right after the hurricane hit you went on Facebook Live and told people how they can help. Tell us what youre doing to directly help your community. Yeah, so i reached out to the managers of the 15 white coats and said we got to do something so we got together 1,500 and raised another ,3500 and gave out all 5,000 of those dollars yesterday. With the intention of raising even more today. We need to help families in the city. Im giving out of my personal money as well as from the 15 white coats because they need help and also im driving down there today. Along with actually some of my med cool classmates willing to come down there with me to cleae we can cats and dogs and just try to help in whatever way we can. Russell, lets get specific. You got a lot of people watching. We know our gma audience, they like to help. They pitch in when they can. What do folks need . What are you hearing . How can people help . Yeah, so people can help by going to the15whitecoats. Org and hit the donate button and earmark them all for Hurricane Relief for hurricane laura and you can also just send water down there street in lake charles, louisiana, is the location ill be at. You can drop off have water sent there. Theres a big parking lot right next to my dads house and hes willing to let people send whatever they can there but mostly donations can come through the 15whitecoats. Org and well make sure that 100 of those donations goes straight to the people and city of lake charles as well as surrounding areas because many of the surrounding areas have been affected like dequincy, louisiana, where my wife is from. Russell, we know everybody is watching and know theyll chip in. I want to tell you one more time you are an inspiration to all of us, and i cant wait to see what youll do in the future. Thank you again so much and good luck to you guys out there. Coming up, everybody, we cant wait for you to meet our pet of the week. Stay with us. It is so amazing to see all the love that she gives all the firefighters before she goes off they go off to fight these unbelievable fires. She gives them so much cuddles and just sets their day up right. It warms my heart. I would imagine it also really warms their heart. Theyre working so hard, do you see her truly making an impact beyond just the cuddles . Absolutely. A lot of the guys are saying that theyre missing home because they havent been there for weeks and they have dogs at home that they miss so much and so seeing kerith just helps them just to feel like a little piece of home and a little bit of love. Mul multiplatinum singer song writer, lewis capaldi, he is nominated for a vma best new artist and before you go, has over 1 billion streams worldwide. Lewis, good morning. Those are some numbers. Wow. Whoo hands up for that. I got to ask you because i want to hear i want to you confirm for me whether this is true or not. Im told that you had been staying in your childhood bedroom in scotland for months living with mom and dad. How did it go . It was awful. It was probably the worst thing ever. I dont enjoy it at all and neither did my parents. My mother and father are both deemed essential workers and mums a nurse and my dad i dont know why hes essential compared to my mum but they did not enjoy coming home from a long hard day at work and seeing their 23yearold son in his underwear eating cheesy doritos covered in them on the family couch. It was definitely not a sight, and also it was a wakeup call to realize im deemed essential. That was a wakeup call. So how did that go . How did you make it work while you were at home with them . Just tried to avoid each other at all costs. In fact, if i saw my mum in the hallway, i would run the other way, and my father, i havent spoken to that man for three months, and you know what, im joking. No, its been lovely. Listen, its been tough for everyone. Of course, i have it a lot better than a lot of people and got to spend it with my family, and everyones safe. So yeah, its been its been real. That has been real and but its nice to get to see them and now everything over here and erhingu ba on the four months and be, like, you know what, it was really nice to get to spend that time with my family, but also, my mothers a terrible cook so it was difficult. You better be nice. Theyre watching. You might need to go back home again. Keep that invitation open. We want to talk about your music. Your new single before you go, this has really become a big hit for you. I want to make sure i get it right. Made the top ten on the billboard hot 100. You call this your most personal song yet. Why is that . So the song is about my aunt who sadly passed away when i was 4 and she sadly took her own life and, yeah, that song is just about that and kind of me growing up and learning about it as my mothers sister, so learning about, like, her reactions to it, and i was a bit worried at first because i think people thought i was going to try i didnt want to seem exploitative, but people seemed to really have reacted to it in a very, very nice way, and its doing well. So making some money. Im joking. Hear it . Congratulations on that, lewis, lewis capaldi, heres the song performing his new single, before you go.
