Just a few moments. And, of course, air quality still a huge concern. Here is a live look at the air quality tracker on our website abc7news. Com. You can see the air is unhealthy and in the south and east bays. Good morning, everybody. It is tuesday, august 25th. A lot to get to. But, first, we want to check in with you, mike, to see what our forecast has in store today. We know that will have a big impact on how theyre able to fight these fires. Exactly. We have a mixture of fog and smoke this morning. And the fog the closer you are to the coast, that is where the marine layer is the deepest around 1,100 to 1,200 feet and visibility down to less than a quarter of a mile on the peninsula coast and with the winds blowing ashore lightly some of that fog is making it all the way into napa. Now, i want to wrap it up right here and send it back to you guys because we have a press conference on the fires. Okay. The czu lightning complex fire burning were hoping to get some updated numbers. Please, keep your mask on when not speaking. Quick update, as of 6 00 this morning this incident is now 78,869 acres. The good news is we continue to make progress on containment up to 17. 17 containment this morning. With that, we have 25,000 structures threatened by this incident and we can confirm that 330 structures have been destroyed by the fire. Of the structures, 11 of them are in San Mateo County and 319 are in santa cruz county. Additionally, we have 1,611 personnel assigned to the incident. With that, ill pass it over to imt3 operation section chief for an operations update. Good morning. So, the past couple days weve seen significant progress in our fire fight on this incident. The werlth is really cooperated with us. Were steadily getting trickle of resources in as soon as were getting those resources, were putting them to our plan to achieve our strategy and tactics for this incident. The incident starting up at the top of the north zones looking really good. Fire is basically just where it exists is creeping down towards our control lines that we have established or we are in the process of establishing so we have no major fire front. Just a slow creep of the fire. Again, if we had a bunch of resources, wed have that surrounded and be able to extinguish. But this is part of our alternative strategy and its working in our favor and doing exactly what we want and although people may see some flames or some fire or see smoke more so than anything, just know that really its part of our overall strategy and poses no threat with our wind patterns and weather patterns. Its doing exactly what we want it to do and it is, again, an alternative strategye inhe it is doing just that. We have an active patrol and lots of resources in there and critical piece of line because even with our new wind pattern coming from the south giving it a little bit of a push, its a no factor because why we want to button that up, that is a direct, would have been a direct threat to Santa Clara County in the line there. Were very confident that is holding and were going to be really looking good there. Around the top, continue Line Construction and into loma mar and very difficult for us to put a good control line in there but because of that were using that alternative method and monitoring that and have resources there monitoring that and thats looki well ntue t put in more and were affectly engaged in putting very good direct control line in which will protect the community and put that in a good spot for protection. Down the coast looking really good. Fire, again, a lot of it selfmitigated and some of the lighter fuels due to this weather. On the south or south lines that we put in been speaking of regarding the contingency lines and holding very well. A lot of the fire has blackened out and is extenguished. So were continuing to work on that area. So, santa cruz and the uc campus looking very well protected. No threat at this point in time. And with our expected weather, were not very concerned with any further push there. So, just a matter of getting in, getting that mopped up and finally putting that away. Moving up the highway 9 corridor, looking really good. Fire is still hung up on the ridge top and as soon as we can getmoreurs welbe doi th. Re just rea not doing much. Were not as concerned with any push on that area. Moving up the highway 9 corridor, ben loamen and brookdale is looking really good. That Little Community is fine. The fire is hung up really high and our challenge is down below and the state park. Again, just rugged terrain and heavy fuels and were continuing to work in there. Thats where were having the challenge. The roll out it rolls out below and burns back up into itself. Its just something that were working on. A real challenge not easy country to work in. As we move into Boulder Creek that is looking really good. A lot of resources in there and actively constructing line. Weve been working our helicopters diligently through there yesterday because of the air was clear and we have six water dropping helicopters. 200,000 gallons. We dropped yesterday and we timed out the aircraft. That means we flew the aircraft to the maximum we could fly them as far as the hours we could put on in a day per regulations. So, we did that. And i anticipate today we are going to meet that same criteria and maybe exceed the amount of water dropped. That is the challenge i gave to my air folks and theyre ready to meet that challenge to help our ground resources. Bonny doon, again, continue to work in there. A lot of good, hard work being done. Lines put in. Again, slow, tedious process. But were working hard on that and then were starting to work doing some things to work deeper into the incident and the obstacles to continue on our challenge to extinguish this fire. Thank you. Speaking next from the Santa Cruz Sheriff Office is chief deputy chris clark. Well, good morning. Some positive news on the fire and from our standpoint, a little positive news from us and really the port i got back this morning was that not a lot of people were running around and fair qethich isatpele, i that warning, heeding that order to stay out of the evacuated order to let people work. I just encourai continue to enc that. A total of 79 personnel working the area. The entire san lorenzo valley and 46 and today well have about that same number, 76 with 23 Sheriff Office personnel, 18 from in county and, again, like, you know, ive said this before, i cant say thank you, we cant say thank you enough to our encounty and the other agency santa cruz pd, watsonville and Scotts Valley for helping us. 18 from those agencies and then 35 agencies from over the hill. I think i neglected to mention this yesterday, but in terms of missing persons cases, we did have three new cases come in yesterday that our detectives are working through. That brings our total to seven. Seven total missing persons cases that were going to be going through to make sure we know where those folks are. In terms of calls for service. Like i said, a relatively quiet night. 11 total and and our guys went out on and as well they went out to six reports of suspicious people. A new development for us and really, again, to tell you kind of a little bit of the changing condition in terms of just the dangers that are out there, felton empire is impassable. According to our folks. Our folks dont feel comfortable driving through that area just from falling branches and some fire activity in that area. So, overall, relatively quiet night. So, you know, hopefully it stays that way and like i explained last night. We will be out here and a heavy Police Presence and all that is to keep your property, to keep your property safe. Thank you. Next up from the San Mateo County Sheriff Office is Sergeant Saul zuno. Good morning. Good morning. As a fire chief stated, in San Mateo County the fire situation remains stable with noange. Safety and security checks of the evacuated areas also reported no suspicious activity. Thats all we have. Thank you. As you are aware, this incident has a multitude of different agencies and unified command including multiple fire districts cal fire, as well as the Law Enforcement agencies. Speaking for that unified team is Cal Fire Incident Team 3 Incident Commander billy c. Good morning. Obviously, positive news over the last couple of days on the fire. Were able to gain additional perimeter control. Sad to report over 300 structures damaged or destroyed and that number is only going to increase. Obviously, a large incident like this incompasses numerous roadways and numerous structures within the interior that is very difficult to get to. Especially with the amount of trees that have fallen and the amount of debris that is in the road. Today, were going to be focusing not only pereter fight fo out onground, but were developing our road group and systematically start opening roadways up and debris and gaining access to increase the ability for our damage inspection teams throughout this incident to make interior access to identify any private property that has been damaged or destroyed. This is going to be a long, tedious process. The majority of this fire incompasses large, old growth timber. Those trees are coming down across the roads. A lot of the wooden bridges that are in the area have either been damaged or burned. Theyre impassable. So, its going to take diligent effort on our part to identify access points, get them cleared and get those folks in there so we can do a thorough assessment and provide the most detailed information. Thank you. And our final speaker this morning from the cal fire san mateo, from the l fire Santa Cruz Unit is unit chiefian larkin. Good morning. They mentioned, the team is doing an outstanding job with the resources we have available to us. From the start, we have had a limited number of resources on all the fires that occurred. The 22 we started with and now the one large incident that we have. The mutual aid system isut whe tasked due to the number of fires across the state, it does limit our ability to get those resources here in a timely manner. So, as they start to trickle in, the team is getting them out to the assignments that they can get them to that are our pare priorities and theyre doing an outstanding job with that. As for the public, the roadways are very, very dangerous out there. Those still in the fire area, you need to be very cautious and youre driving around and out and about or if youre around the property that has been damaged by fire. Those trees are weakened due to fire and also due to drought. So, please be cognizant of that. The firefighters are out there are putting themselves in positions in that same environment and were doing whatever we can to protect them but also get the roadways open so we can get our damage inspection teams in there to really evaluate what losses we have but also determine what structures are still left. So, please be patient with us. Were doing the best we can with the resources we have and were in this for the long hall, as i keep stating. This is a historic event for this unit. We have never seen fire like this in the history, recent history that we have any records for. So, this fuel is very receptive due to drought conditions. So, any changes in the weather, though we have good predicted weather for the future, could change that environment. So, please bear with us. Be safe out there and i know our crews are working as hard as they possibly to get control of this fire. Thank you. All right. Answer any questions that might be out there. Theres a lot of good news we just got from this news conference. If youre just joining us, the contain frment the czu fire that is burning in san mateo and santa clara counties is 17 that is up from 13 yesterday. But probably the more important number here is that although its at 78,000 acres, which of course, huge, that is not a very big increase from the day before. So, the fire appears to have really slowed down and a lot of that is being credited to the weather and the wind conditions yesterday according to this news conference, firefighters were able to get a lot of headway. They were also able to make headway in the air, which is not something they have been able to do until now at least with great effectiveness because they werent able to fly aircraft very much over this fire. So, yesterday it sounds like they were able to do that a number of times and they are hopeful today theyll be able to match that or even do more. Still, as you can see from this video, so many structures have been destroyed. 330 destroyed total. And the vast majority of those in santa cruz county. 319 out of that 330 in that county. The other thing that were going to be watching is the Sheriff Department saying that seven people are now missing. So they are still looking into four from yesterday and an additional three that are new to us. So, seven total missing person cases that theyre looking in to. Other than that, they say last night the santa cruz Sheriff Department are relatively quiet and please would the compliance right now as far as people staying out of the evacuation zones. So, again, 17 contained. The the lnu complex fire is giving crews all they can handle. Crews are battle back flames that are stretching from large parts of wine country. So far its burned more than 350,000 acres in napa, sonoma and solano counties. Containment is rising. Amy hollyfield is following this fire fight and joins us live with the latest. They still have road closures in the area and evacuation areas in place. But Officials Say yesterday they ended in a much better place than they even expected. That they absolutely liked what they are seeing on this fire. We have some video of the fire from yesterday afternoon burning in the hills northwest of healdsburg near dry creek road. They expect this fire to grow. Residents are pitching in to help try to save ranches and homes. This fire has destroyed some homes west of healsburg but they do think that their efforts have helped make a difference. Every time you can save a structure, its a win. But sometimes its just unfortunate and i cant emphasize the preemptative work that weve done on our ranch preparing for this. You know, weve been doing a lot of clearing and burning and its been, it paid off. It really did. Our preparation of the, you know, bulldozer lines away from the house out of sight but were able to utilize everything that we had prepared for. The walbridge fire has burned and they do not have a count yet on how many homes or buildings it has destroyed. Officials say the weather has given them a break and they hope that that will help them continue to make progress. They say their goal is to get evacuated residents back to their homes as soon as they can. They have not given a timeline yet on when that could possibly happen. Containment on this fire is at 7 . But look for that number to go up today. Reporting live in now your forecast with mike nicco. Checking on the latest conditions out there as far as our air quality. Burned more than 78,000 acres. But overnight barely grew which means firefighters are making good progress. Abc7 News Reporter Julian Glover live from Scotts Valley with what we just learned in the last 30 minutes. Hi, julian. Hi, reggie. Not just some progress, but really significant progress. Thats what cal fire said this morning. They really attributed weather to being a huge factor in that. They increased the containment of the fire overnight from 13 to 17 . A big win for the firefighters that have been attacking this blaze now for seven consecutive days. We do want to give you updates on what theyve been doing. On the north end of the fire, so, the threat that was, the part of the fire that was posing a threat to Santa Clara County they have now been saying that the fire is doing what they want up there creeping towards the control lines that theyve been able to put in place. You mig som flames or smoke and that is part of their strategy and they are saying no longer a threat to Santa Clara County hoping it will stay that way if the wind conditions continue to keep their current conditions. Theyve been actively putting those control lines in along the coast to save pescudearo and parts of davenport and taking advantage of the marine layer that is helping extinguish part of the fire along the coast and to the south theyve said theyve been able to set some control lines there. The fire blackened out or extinguished in parts and theyre feeling confident that the city of santa cruz is safe at this point. We do want to let you know about the air operation. They said they had a lot of success in that on monday. Visibility improved and that allowed them to attack the fire from the air. Been working our helicopters diligently through there yesterday because of the air was clear.
