Smokey hair is something to help us stay afloat. We have barbara lee with the pandemic and the latest drama at the Democratic National convention. Its closing night tonight. First, lets give you the new numbers. More than 400 that started in the region. Many by lightning. Heres the latest on the three main complex fire zones. The north bays lmu lightning complex fire in solana, and napa, nocoainment, four inri more than 30,000 structures in danger. Now, lets talk about the czu in sari ra clara county hills. That burned more than 37,000 acres. 5 contained there. The czu is 40,000 acres. Evacuation orders were released for uc santa cruz and responder there and almost 9,000 structures are now threatened. Spencer christian joins us now. Is the weather turning more favorable for fire iters today . Well, yes and no the good news is that we have a building marine layer, which is going to bring in cooler air and elevate the humidity, which is good news. But when marine layer bills and deepens, it brings with it a surge of gusty wind, which is not good news for firefighters. It makes the fire spread. Let me give you the weather conditions at the location of some of our fires. Over in vacaville, relative humidity up to 51 the winds gusting at 13 miles per hour. Not terribly bad, but it would be helpful to the firefighters and containment if they were lighter. Over in the area of the gamble fire, 88 degrees, relative humidity there is very, very low. Only 20 with a fairly light wind, gusts up to 5 miles per hour. The hen see fire, 84 degrees, relative humidity is at 30 . Thats low, not dangerously low. The wind there is gusting, however, between 10 and 12 miles per hour. So a bit containment there. Down near lahasnt do, its 76 degrees. Not hot there. Relative humidity increased a bit up to 44 . The wind is gusting to 13 miles per hour. Now, if you want to take a look at air quality here, you see the orange dots around the bay shore line, san francisco, oakland, fremont, redwood city indicating poor air quality for sensitive groups, young children, the elderly. You see the red dots indicating very poor air quality at san jose. Livermore near vacaville, yellow dots, did i say yellow around the bay . Orange dots around the bay shore line. Yellow dots canadian moderate air quality. We can find moderate air quality at san rafael, santa rosa, napa and fairfield. You have to go far outside the central bay area to find green dots indicating goir quality. That would be way up north near ft. Bragg, willis and ukiah. It is so interesting, spencer, that where, of course, the air quality is, is not necessarily correlated with wra where the fires are burning, right . Have you the fire at point reyes at the cost. That way for a while . D . The reason that smoke is headed inland is we had this developing marine layer, which i mentioned, accompanied by a pretty much westerly flow. So the wind is going from westtoeast. Its clearing out the particulate mat and areas near the coastline. Its blowing that smoke inland. So either bay locations and inland locations will continued to see a decline in the air quality. The fires are above the marine layer, above the cooling influence and where we expect an influence in humidity. So there may not be much help from the marine layer in the higher elevations. The marine layer will be helpful in the lower elevations. All right, spencer. Unfortunately, it is going to warm up after a day or two. Right. Right now what you want or i felt like doing the morning is to have my windows opened to let the cooler air in. It doesnt smell that smokey to me. This is on the peninsula, but i have a feel figure i did leave the window opened for a little while, its going to build up, that that smoke will come in, you kind of felt that at your home, didnt you . I did, indeed. My wif fan on around certain parts of the house ande to circulate the air. We had the windows opened hoping we would be circulating cooler air. Cooler air, yep. What happened was in the middle of the night we started smelling and tasting the smoke. So the air coming in was smokey air. We had to close our windows to just get rid of that taste and smell of smoke. All right. Spencer, i know the only kind of smokey you i when it has that quality in wine, certainly not in the smoke that we are experiencing out there, but i thank you for that information. Really help. Well check back on abc 7 news at 4 00. You know, these wildfires are threatening tens of thousands of people up and down the state. But one side effect was Dangerous Health implications is the smokey air quality that will be lingering over the bay area for days, as you heard. So how might this affect small businesses, which are right now being constrained by the pandemic to only operate outdoors for the most part. Right . So for more, lets bring in enzo rosano, the owner of a business in lafayette and the manager of holly nails in mill valley. Thank you both for joining us gdndy, how are you doing . Are you there . Yes. Excellent. Hey, i want to ask, how is the smoke where you are right area, pretty bad in lafayette. What do you have . Can you show us . Yes. Unfortunately, its really bad and and you can tell. Because i know you have a huge patio dining area. [ poor audio]. We better get you back inside where the better wifi is. So start walking back inside, enzo, i think you have better wifi there. So while you do that, i will check in with sandy. Yes. Sandy, i see blue skies, which is good. I dont think you have that yesterday. Talk about how much business was impacted yesterday with the customers . Did they cancel their books because the air quality was so bad . Yes, but it was so bad, a lot of ashes in the air. So we didnt have a lot of show m youry ni. s beautiful. No. How about just for your moon curist, surely youmeven with yo there. Yes. You have to do face shields, shield guards and a lot of stuff. Cleaning. A lot of sanitation. Yeah. Well, i got to say, in this climate, losing even a day or two of business is probably hurtful. Enzo, are you back where i have you, where we have better wifi . Do we have you back . Yes, you do, kristen, thanks. I want to show you my beautiful patio in the restaurant. Unfortunately, as you can see, we cannot use the indoor restaurant because of the covid and now because of this fine, we cannot use the outdoor space. And so, its very like a valging and you know we are my renato, my manager, my brother jhe the e chef. Mama with the lasagna, we just need to hope that we can get a sandwich to go. Was going to say, you put we the staff on the schedule in advance, right . And yet people cant go to bookings. Do you think its a combination of the bad air, the temperatures, the heat . Well, like you know thank god we have a gorgeous patio. As you can see, and tonight weg people did a t p ats a challen. Its a really challenge. Well, can i ask you . Early on, you had the federal government help, the ppe, the payroll protection given to small businesses. I guess thats spent and gone. Right . So im going to ask you, what do you think you need right now given that, you know, you are running out of money and the fact that, look, right now, its still summer. Lets say we get into november. Can you sustain Outdoor Dining . You know, will people still come when it gets colder . Can you have a level that will force you to keep going . Kristen, it will be very,000 as you know, we went through a lot of fun and like you know a tough time like in 2001, you know it just came and we have a lot of restaurants likei francisco close and every single restaurant like even made a saloon to pay. Restaurants are accused [ inaudible ] but with only outdoor, its tough. Especially when you are with the police and its raining and its windy. Thank god, we are in iiful w. I certainly hope that people will be able to enjoy the beautiful weather, enzo, once the smoke clears up. I know spencer said its going to be a few days. Hang in there, thank you and thank you, sandy, for joining us today. Enzo, just see if you can pack that food up and send it my way. It looks too good to waste. Thank you both, appreciate it. We will take a short break. You can see how hard for businesses given the smokey ayre i air right now. We will talk with a cal fire and get all right. Thanks for joining us again. Lets find out how its going for firefighters right now. Cal fire spokesperson jeremy rahn is here. Thank you for your time. You are coming to me from and ceera, thats kind of the i wantrosarea. We have csu and czu in the east and the wine country. How are each of those battles going . Im currently asoviet unioned to the lau lightning complex. That would be the one i have the information. The other two complexes as well as num us other fires around the state are very dynamic. We are stretched thin on resources. Tell us about how thats gmpblth ive se going. I seen new Evacuation Orders come down. Talk about that i imagine if there are new Evacuation Orders, then it is still spreading . Frozen, but i have confidence if i think hard for ten second its going to unfreeze itself. And if it doesnt, well have to try to reconnect with you in just a moment. Folks, while we work on that, i just want to pass along to you got i to get mation that we him back. In fact, we have new information right now about in the scu theri a new Evacuation Order that came in. Its for all areas for the Diablo Grande parkway and community that is in the stanislav county. There is a shelter for you in patterson. And then the czu fire, as you know, that is the one in the santa cruz mountains, were talking about the San Mateo County area. I just got a new notice right there as well with regard to all right, its not coming up for me. I do apologize for that. All right. We will reset real quickly and all right. We are back. We know these wildfires have turned into outofcontrol natural disasters. But how do we slow them down or prevent them in the future. Joining us like is u. S. Congresswoman barbara lee. She represents a large portion of the east bay, including oakland. Thank you, congresswoman lee to join us today. Glad to be with you. Thank you. Yeah, its a tough time. I got to tell you. What do you make of these fires . As a law maker from california will you be doing anything to get money for firefighting, Fire Prevention and for the victims . Absolutely. And, first of all my heart goes out to all to evacuate whose loved ones have lost their lives, who have been injured. My aunt lives in assisted living in windsor. We are all praying and hoping for them or in our Nursing Homes and assisted living facilities. And just know that this declaration, Emergency Declaration should really trigger federal funding for the fire and the disaster that is, once again taking place in california. So we will make very hard to make sure the resources are definitely there on an emergency basis and not have to go through all of the, you know, delay tactics and stalling tactics that legislation oftentimes requires. So, yes, we will be working. We are working very hard, but also, let me just say, this is, once again, and people have to understand in the midst of this, recognize what Climate Change is. This isfiampleofhy we have to gr control. And im urging everyone to stay safe, stay healthy this fire on top of the covid pandemic has created an enormous crisis a pu together. And i thank our First Responders for everything that they are doing. Well, climate scientists agree that Global Warming is a component of the intensifying wildfires we are having in california. But President Trump this afternoon blamed the wildfires on the state as saying we havent been cleaning our forest and its our own Energy Policies that are contributing. Do you see some validity . Any validity there . Absolutely not. He said that the last time and its just, anything he says, you know, i always see just the opposite. And there is no way, i think the Forest Services and our departments that are responsible for Fire Protection and prevention have done a magnificent job in california ng support fort try to wiggle federal resources to our state. Because hes blaming everyone else. Our state is right on point. The governor has done an excellent job. And i think we have to, you know, keep on track and make sure that we try to mitigate against it and get things under control right away. Speaking of governor newsom. I want to shift to the dnc. By the way, you represented california in the role call two nights ago, i saw that. Thank you. Thank you. Tonight, though, governor wsomas g t speaking. Any insight as to why that is . No, i dont. I dont know exactly why. But i assume hes pretty busy right now. This governor has taken on the pandemic in big ways in terms of making sure that the response is based on science and a Health Protocols and i know he is really working very happenrd on disaster now that we are facing. So hes got his hands full. I think and again i havent talked to him, but no im not sure why, i assume he has really important things to do to help contain these fires, help make sure people are safe and make sure our firefighters and First Responders have the equipment that they need to protect them as they go in to try to save our lives and save the state from another disaster. All right. We have only aboutantlet you g asking you about senator Kamela Harris speech last night. I know you go way back. Was that the kamela, what america saw last night. Was that the kamela you know . Absolutely. Its the kamela i know and have known for many years. I supported her when she ran for president. Shes a person who is very, first of all, smart and prepared to take on this job. Secondly, as she said, she knows a predator within she sees one. Trump administration in terms of the damage theyve done to the american people. Also, she is a person who can relate to people each and every day. I remember very well when my mother passed away, which was just such a disaster and i was mourning still in 2015 the loss of a mother is like none other. And kamela said to me, she was sorry and i burst into tears. And she took me backstage. This was during her campaign and she talked to me about the grieving process and we compared notes about what it was like in the hospital, what our mothers needed, how we were care girls she really helped me through that process and thats just an example of how she can relate to people and their challenges and aspirations. So i was really excited that shes going to be our Vice President because she is a person who e toea with h te have a countryt values black lives and that we get through this economic crisis and this Health Crisis and retool for the future. Well, congresswoman barbara lee, thank you so much. It is joe bidens term tonight. And we will be watching. All right. Take care. Good to know. All right. Hi there. We are back with jeremy rahn, spokesperson for cal fire, talking outtn area. Th c tell me about the plan of attack for that particular fire and also then e any new evacuations related to them . The evacuations are continuing to evolve. We just want to urge residents that are in the area to make sure they are in the local sheriffs process as far as being notified and to be ready to go in the event they need to. The wind, as weve mentioned br as well as the limited resource, our number one priority is fire fighter safety as well as public safety. Right now with the dynamic movements of this fireworks our main priority is keeping the public safe . Are you finding that people are responding to your Evacuation Orders and also the dont return orders or are you finding people who are saying, nope, im staying or theyre returning to the area before you give them permission . That is our Law Enforcement role. But for, ill generalize to the point that a hospital of people have all those Evacuation Orders. We have a lot that have not. When they dont, it just jeopardize responders when theyre trying to get in to notify additional people as well as work on the fires edge when they need to stop and then work on doing emergency evacuations in areas we have already put under an order. Hey, i know you earlier talked about getting resources from out of state. I know there is this cooperation between western states, in particular, are you also expecting federal hope from the department of forestry or other resources that might be coming to california . All of the resources within california always and historically work real well, very well together. Sorry. They are mixed on both federal fires as well as state fires. What weve mentioned yesterday is what were trying to do is to reach out to other states, to try to bring resources in, similar to what we have had to do in previous years when we have such limited amount of resources. And i think a lot of time we say resources, but were talking typical firefighting stools, fire engines, for example, fire crews. With all of the activity in the state, we are stretched thin. All right. Best of luck to you as you battle these fires. Jeremy rahn with cal fierl. Thank you so much. And thank you for joining us ttingansw every at answering your questions. World news is up next following the busy wildfires on abc 7 news at 4 00. Until then you can get information on tonight, several major stories as we come on the air.
