This morning theyre joining us live and weve got a huge surprise for them. Good morning, america. They made me want to learn a little bit more this morning, and we have a lot to cover this morning. The two big stories, those massive wildfires in california, now converging. So many families struggling to get out all in the middle of the pandemic. We are live in the fire zone with the latest in just a few moments. But first we do want to begin, of course, with that historic night with senator Kamala Harris and the democrats, the partys biggest names out in full force presenting a positive vision for the nation but also targeting President Trump. Barack obama blasted his successor as a danger to our democracy. A former president taking on a sitting president in a way we have not seen before. Kamala harris made history the moment she accepted that Vice President ial nomination, and mary bruce is in delaware with all the highlights. Good morning, mary. Reporter good morning, george. Well, it was a night for history here. Kamala harris breaking barriers as she accepted the partys nomination. This was a night full of celebration, but also dire warnings. Democrats casting the president as a threat to the nation, and over and over again, the speakers here hitting on the same theme. Vote. Overnight Kamala Harris making history to virtual applause. Becoming the first black woman, the first asianamerican nominated to be Vice President. Lets fight with conviction. Lets fight with hope. Lets fight with confidence in ourselves and a commitment to each other. To the america we know is possible. The america we love. Reporter and in plain terms she talked about the crises facing this country. This virus, it has no eyes and yet it knows exactly how we see each other and how we treat each other. And lets be clear, there is no vaccine for racism. Reporter and making it clear shes ready to take on President Trump. Donald trumps failure of leadership has cost lives and livelihoods. Reporter the daughter of indian and jamaican immigrants, harris outlined her vision of america where people of all backgrounds are welcome. We must elect a president who will bring something different, something better, and do the important work, a president who will bring all of us together, black, white, latino, asian, indigenous, to achieve the future we collectively want. We must elect joe biden. Reporter it was a night for trailblazing women. Hillary clinton urging americans to get out and vote, warning democrats not to take anything for granted. Dont forget, joe and kamala can win by 3 million votes and still lose. Take it from me. So we need numbers overwhelming, so trump cant sneak or steal his way to victory. Reporter but it was former president obama as he passed the torch to the partys new standardbearers who launched the sharpest attacks of the night, taking on his successor. He has shown no interest in putting in the work. No interest in finding common ground. No interest in using the awesome power of his office to help anyone but himself and his friends. No interest in treating the presidency as anything but one more reality show that he can use to get the attention he craves. Reporter speaking from philadelphia, the birthplace of american democracy, obama argued that very democracy is at stake in this election. Theyre hoping to make it as hard as possible for you to vote and to convince you that your vote does not matter. Do not let them take away your power. Do not let them take away your democracy. Reporter calling him a brother, obama made an impassioned case for his former Vice President. He made me a better president and hes got the character and the experience to make us a better country. Reporter and President Trump was again watching closely firing off live tweets throughout the night attacking the speakers with those all cap tweets that he loves so much and tonight joe biden will step before the podium and address the nation for the first time as the nominee pitching himself as the leader who can take the country past the tumultuous trump years. George. Okay, mary. Thanks. Lets look ahead to tonight with senator cory booker. Thank you for joining us this morning. You know, you watched the speeches last night from Kamala Harris and barack obama. You read the tweets from President Trump. Its almost as if theyre speaking to two completely Different Countries and president obama conceded most americans have made up their minds. Is there anyone left to be persuaded right now, and what must joe biden do to convince them . Well, i think the biggest persuasion we need is to have people come out and vote in the first place. You know this. We had a very significant nonparticipation rate in the 2016 election, and, you know, i think thats the challenge in our country. Its always been. Its what our ancestors talked about, its about apathy as one of the greatest enemies of a democracy so im hoping that last night energized people, ignited people, let people know whats at stake and most importantly, that they have the power to make a difference in this nation. And what does joe biden do tonight . I think joe biden shows us his heart. I know that one thing i found particularly impressive about him on the campaign trail is how much he really does lead with a love of folks. You cant lead the people if you dont love the people. I think a lot of americans are tired of politics, tired of the divisions, theyre tired of the kind of rancor and i think he can really rise in america and be a healer and remind our country that the lines that divide us are not as strong as the ties that bind us. I really believe were at a point in america where we need to, all of us, to try to generate revival of civic grace, and i think that he has the decency to do that. I think well see that tonight. Weve never seen a former president take on a sitting president the way barack obama took on donald trump last night an existential threat to our democracy. President trump is saying the only way hell lose is if the election is rigged. Are you convinced this will be a Fair Election and what must be done for americans to see it as fair . Well, i think that we have already seen a president do things that are unprecedented and its not barack obama giving a critique of donald trump. Its donald trump doing everything from turning armed forces on Peaceful Protesters in front of lafayette square, donald trump attacking the Postal Service the way he is and days before an election. This is a time where weve seen so many norms trashed by this president , so many institutions attacked from our freedom of speech and journalists like you all the way to our own Intelligence Officers and so there is a credible belief out there by many folks in our government and elsewhere that we are at a point where our democracy is being stress tested like it never has before but as a person who grew up with two civil rights parents, i know about obstacles that have been placed to vote before. I know about the challenges that weve faced in having Fair Elections and so there may be dirty tricks from this president. Were already seeing it right now again with the post office but i learned from my parents and grandparents that obstacles will always be put up but our determination to surmount them is whats important so i hope americans are not deterred and press on in what is the most important election of our lifetime. It will define how this country moves forward, not only in the spirit of america, but our ability to manifest kindness and love for one another, but also issues that are affecting the entire planet like climate change. This is such an important election. We cannot allow any excuses to stop us from participating. Were just about out of time. Whats the number one point you want to make tonight . I think i want to talk to that heart and spirit of our country and remind us that patriotism is love of country and you cant love your country unless you love your fellow countrymen and women. That doesnt mean we always have to agree or even like each other, but we have to understand were all in this together and love is not sentimentality, but it means that were willing to stand up for each other, sacrifice for each other, to in many ways fight in this generation to do one of our greatest calls which is to put more indivisible back into our one nation under god. Thank you for your time. Thank you. We will have full coverage of the convention beginning at 7 00 p. M. Eastern on abc news live. Ill anchor on prime Time Starting at 10 00 eastern, and sunday robin and david muir will sit down with joe biden and Kamala Harris at 8 00 p. M. Michael. Thank you, george. Were going to turn now to a couple of georgia teachers who have become internet sensations making a rap video to welcome their students back set to jack harlows song whats popping. We love that song. We were dancing to it earlier. They enlisted some of the schools cheer squad as backup dancers, and what they ended up with, pure social media gold even with more than 250,000 views so far this morning. Take a look. Brandnew year im locked in as far as teaching go im unreachable im number one in your top ten, ms. Williams been popping to the new school year dropping no covid19 dont worry about nothing whats popping you got options but you better pass my class, no flopping log in every day im watching yeah were virtual and you know whats up so well take it up a notch and we have those two incredible teachers joining us live from Monroe Comprehensive High School in albany, georgia this morning. Good morning to both of you, and i have to say, if you dont want to teach, it looks like that rap career would be right and ready to go. This video, this video is absolutely its great. I see why so many people are in love with it. How did you come up with the idea . Well, actually the idea came about four years ago when it was my first year of teaching and instead of doing a back to school rap i did end of the school year rap to celebrate my first year of being successful as a first year teacher. That following year mrs. Evans joined me, and we were already friends prior to her coming. So when she came, i was so excited and i wanted to kind of keep the raps going to keep the morale of the school up. So i asked miss evans if she could join me in the next schools rap and she was down. From that, it was history. Well, you guys are a perfect duo so we know you wrote the lyrics. Whats the message that you guys wanted to send to the students with this song . Well, because albany was impacted dramatically because of covid19, we wanted to basically just motivate not only our students, our teachers but our community. We have a lot of people that lost their lives and im sure the students were discouraged to even come to school in those circumstances, so we wanted to just show them how important it is to overcome adversity, to push through no matter what and no matter where youre from you can always be motivated and take it to the top. That is absolutely true. And not even just for the students, but for the teachers as well. We needed that encouragement and uplifting as well as much as the students. I think that gets lost sometimes. Teachers need encouragement. Were you surprised by the response that its gotten . Yes. Yes. Its a total big shock to know that we have done this. For me four years, for miss evans, three and see the feedback we get every year but for this reason, this video, i cannot believe the responses and the feedback and all the social Media Outlets that have posted us. It is mind blowing. We know that you set it to whats popping by jack harlow. Do you know if hes seen it . He has seen it. He actually commented on my video saying, hey, miss williams, so that was an amazing feeling to see that hes seen that video. All right. Well, since we know hes seen it, how about we find out what jack harlow thinks about this video because, wait for it, the multiplatinum selling artist is joining us live right here. All right, jack, what do you want to say to these two amazing teachers, miss williams and miss evans . Good morning. I cant even tell yall how amazing yall are. Good morning. How are you guys doing . Hey. Good morning. How are you . We hear you have a surprise for them. Yeah, well, you know, i grew up with teachers who had a huge influence on me my whole life and it stuck with me so what yall provide to society is invaluable so i cant thank you enough for doing the job you guys do, so just as a small token of my appreciation i wanted to give both of you 2,000 gift cards to treat yourselves to whatever you want. Oh, my. I really appreciate yall doing what yall do. Thank you for making my song better. Yall killed on that song. Thank you. Thank you so much. Oh, thats amazing. Yes, thank you so much. I love you. I love you guys. We love you too. What did you think of the song, jack . Oh, they killed it. Its better than the original. Well, you guys are a winning combo. Thank you all for being here this morning. Keep up the good work, good luck in this next coming school year. You guys stay safe. Thank you for everything. Coming up, everybody, oscar winner Russell Crowe. Stay with us. Announcer tomorrow on gma, the one, the only, the killers. Ignite your weekend. That breaking news is about the pg e worker who died in Solano County. The employee was helping First Responders when it happened. Pg e says the employee was found unresponsive outside of vacaville on tuesday. The worker was taken hospital where he died. Now this is the first reported death in connection to this weeks bay area fires. All of us have cooler weather this morning. Temperatures in the mid50s to mid60s and even the peninsula and coast as we talked about the marine layer would undercut the poor air quality for a while this morning, but you can see its still untin the east bay valleys and solano. The poor air quality is going to be the big issue moving forward. So are weve always made quality furnishings for the many people. And when we sell many of them, we make them more affordable. To us, that just makes sense. Ikea. Make the dream yours. Dearand with summer here, these energy bills are rising. Together, we can save energy and money. What you got, lara . A little shoulder shimmy. Also Russell Crowe. He is starring in the first major movie to hit theaters since the beginning of the pandemic. Two decades after his performance in gladiator, the oscar winner spoke to amy robach oneonone about his new film unhinged. My name is maximus. Reporter its been 20 years since he donned armier an a sword in gladiator. I will have my vengeance in this life or the next. Its 2 000 when it came out. 20 years ive used my body to do my job in a very extreme way so i carry a lot of injuries from different films but im saying all of this without meaning to sound sad about it in any way. I dont regret any of those decisions but at 56, i do feel that on a daily basis. Obviously people will probably always and in a very good way associate you with the gladiator role and you obviously won an oscar for that role but i understand that you think you got too much credit for that, is that true . Ridley scott is an amazing director and, you know, i do think that you cant possibly give me an award for what i did in that movie unless you recognize the director because he set the tone of all of that. Are you not entertained . Now crowe take on a new role in unhinged using his old iconic lines to build excitement. My name is incidental. Looking for a prop and happened to walk past that helmet. I thought i would shoot something for my own amusement. They were like actually this is the way we need to do the film. Do not look at him. Reporter playing a man whose road rage has made him unhinged. Unhinged is about that normal everyday occurrence where you might have a slight disagreement with somebody about how traffic should flow while youre doing your daily commute. One person is willing to say theyre sorry and the other person is unwilling to match that. I dont have anything to apologize for, sir. I dont think thats really true of any of us, is it . It sets off a series of events which you just wouldnt have expected. I dont even think you really know what a bad day is. But youre gonna find out. Reporter your character says ill show you what a bad day is. Youre gonna learn. Youre going to learn the hard way. I think the world has had so many bad days during these times and this is one of the first movies that some people will be able to return to the theaters to see. Are you excited about that . Well, look, its the first fresh new thing back. If you watched everything you wanted to watch on netflix, if youve seen the Princess Bride three times, you know, this is the sort of experience that, you know, will shake you up and give you a little bit of fun. Reporter for Good Morning America, amy robach, abc news, new york. Thanks, amy. Unhinged in theaters tomorrow. Coming up. Riza and kat graham from cut throw city live on good morning vo my name is cynthia hawkins, the owner of Hawkins House of burgers. My grandparents came here in 1939 and weve been serving this community for over 80 years. My dad always said, take care of your community and they will always take care of you. And they have done so. Through the ups and through the downs. My name may be on this building, but this place belongs to all of us. Back now on gma and people are roaring about our august book club pick, the lions of fifth avenue. See what you did there. The historical fiction page turner is already a bestseller and one of the summers hottest reads with equal parts history and mystery. Deborah roberts went oneonone with the author fiona davis and back with more. Hey, deb. Hey, cecilia. Yeah, she is on a hot streak penning five novels that pull back the curtain on some famous institution while taking you on a ride. The new the lions of fifth avenue fittingly takes a look at americas Womens Movement from the struggle for voting rides to equality in the work place. Fiona davis is no strange story book buzz. Her newest novel, the lions of fifth avenue, already grabbing major attention including from gma. When you heard you were going to be the pick for the Gma Book Club, your reaction. I screamed. Reporter the bestselling writer known for historical fiction is at it again, this time with the majestic new york public library. Her story toggling between dual time lines, 1913 and 1993. The library a looming presence throughout. When it was built in 1911 it was the largest marble structure in america and 50,000 people visited it the very first day. Reporter the story exploring female empowerment with a look back at the unfolding Womens Movement, told through the eyes of two very different women. Laura in the 1910s is raising a family and lives in a library surrounded by all this knowledge but she feels stifled. She wants more out of life and then you have said di who in the 1990s is the curator for a special collection at the library called the bird collection which actually exists and sadie is a little out of step with her time where she loves vintage clothes. She loves old books. Reporter the two also related with dark family secrets between them. Family secret, was that something you intentionally wanted to explore. I think its interesting how families keep secrets over generations and how that affects later generations even if they might not have been in on the initial secret early on. Reporter theres also a breathless mystery involving book thefts of rare works, even a secret apartment tucked away in the lower floors of the library. This is the floor plan. The apartment actually existed. When you think of libraries and librarian, reserved, kind of quiet but yet this book is anything but that. Theres a lot of mystery, theres a lot of intrigue. Ive been to conventions of librarians and they are not all straightlaced. Let me make that clear. You know, for me it really is a love letter to libraries and the work that librarians do. Reporter so who bet story discuss the book than a librarian like alison who happens to be A Fiona Davis fan. What did you think of this book . The characters are so engaging and the fact that it spans two time periods in new york city, its so evocative of both of those times. Clearly were not in a time of meeting authors these days because of social distancing but what would you want to ask her . I think about this particular book. But actually why dont you actually ask her yourself. I love that library and i was so happy to spend so much time there in your book. Good. Thank you. How much time did you spend when you were writing this book in that library . I was so lucky in that i was able to get a behindthescenes tour. Thats part of the fun of writing a book is researching the location and it was such an incredible, incredible place. What a surprise, huh . Im very surprised. And thank you for being a librarian and everything you do to connect readers and authors, we so appreciate it. Reporter like any good author shes already at work on her next novel but for now fiona davis can savor this one making its way on the bestsellers list. Might soon be hard to find. You wont have a problem because i made sure you have your own copy. I got it. Thank you so much for that. Now back to ginger. Michael, thank you and for this gma moment were going to go to little rock, arkansas, together and meet 15monthold scout. Yep, scout enjoying the sprinkler for the first time. Listen. Just loves it. Best noise in the entire world. Whitney smith, thank you for sending psychiatry. Already prescribing hope. A role model and hero. Thats whats making news in america this morning. Right now on america this morning, the democrats big we are here now with rza and kat graham teaming up for cut throat city. The wutang clan leader stepping behind the camera to direct kat on the screen. Good morning to both of you. Appreciate your time. First, we want to congratulate you. It was pretty mind blowing every time i walked on set and to work with somebody as humble as him, all of his accolades and everything hes accomplished is just really taught me a lot as an artist. Katn. A few words how would you describe rza . Okay, well, had a bit of time to think about this but i always call rza a guru, ninja, energy conductor, coolest of the cool. Thats how i definitely describe him, energy is definitely important and he is somebody that really has great energy. Rza, turning it on you. How would you describe kat . Well, to be honest i look at kat as a wonder woman, you know. Shes really got that talent and just capable. Shes so capable and im really think shes just an incredible talent. So im going to coin you wonder woman. I love it. Big shoes to step into. Thank you, sir. Guy, lets talk about cut throat. Its about this group of friends that returns back to new orleans after hurricane katrina. They end up being kind of driven to pull off this huge heist so weve got a clip. Lets take a look. Maybe you were talented, educated, black man. You went to tulane. None of that matters. No, because im still in the ninth ward. Yeah, we still here but we can go anywhere we want, baby. Anywhere we want. No, we cant. Thats the whole issue. Thats my problem. We was underwater before katrina. So excited about this one. So this was a really incredible cast. Rza, you were working with newcomers, younger actors, people who have been around. Iconic actors. What was it like to work with this mix of people for this project . Well, the cool thing is that, you know, young talent got a chance to cross pollenate with the og talent, you know, so Wesley Snipes or, you know, seeing kat with ethan hawke, i think thaeks change of generational talent really elevates the film and it was really a pleasure like putting together my own acting wutang clan, you know what i mean . I tell you what, we cannot wait to see it. Dmrathss again, rza on your emmy nomination and congratulations to you both on cut throat city. It is in theaters tomorrow.
