But first we do want to begin, of course, with that historic night with senator Kamala Harris and the democrats, the partys biggest names out in full force presenting a positive vision for the nation but also targeting President Trump. Barack obama blasted his successor as a danger to our democracy. A former president taking on a sitting president in a way we have not seen before. Well, it was a night for history here. Kamala harris breaking barriers as she accepted the partys nomination. This was a night full of celebration, but also dire warnings. Democrats casting the president as a threat to the nation, and over and over again, the speakers here hitting on the same theme. Vote. Overnight Kamala Harris making history to virtual applause. Becoming the first black woman, the first asianamerican nominated to be Vice President. Lets fight with conviction. Lets fight with hope. Lets fight with confidence in ourselves and a commitment to each other. To the america we know is possible. The america we love. You know, you watched the speeches last night from Kamala Harris and barack obama. You read the tweets from President Trump. Its almost as if theyre speaking to two completely Different Countries and president obama conceded most americans have made up their minds. Is there anyone left to be persuaded right now, and what must joe biden do to convince them . Well, i think the biggest persuasion we need is to have people come out and vote in the first place. You know this. We had a very significant nonparticipation rate in the 2016 election, and, you know, i think thats the challenge in our country. Its always been. Its what our ancestors talked about, its about apathy as one of the greatest enemies of a democracy so im hoping that last night energized people, ignited people, let people know whats at stake and most importantly, that they have the power to make a difference in this nation. And what does joe biden do tonight . I think joe biden shows us his heart. I know that one thing i found particularly impressive about him on the campaign trail is how much he really does lead with a love of folks. You cant lead the people if you dont love the people. I think a lot of americans are tired of politics, tired of the divisions, theyre tired of the kind of rancor and i think he can really rise in america and be a healer and remind our country that the lines that divide us are not as strong as the ties that bind us. I really believe were at a point in america where we need to, all of us, to try to generate revival of civic grace, and i think that he has the decency to do that. I think well see that tonight. Weve never seen a former president take on a sitting president the way barack obama took on donald trump last night an existential threat to our democracy. President trump is saying the only way hell lose is if the election is rigged. Are you convinced this will be a Fair Election and what must be done for americans to see it as fair . Well, i think that we have already seen a president do things that are unprecedented and its not barack obama giving a critique of donald trump. Its donald trump doing everything from turning armed forces on Peaceful Protesters in front of lafayette square, donald trump attacking the Postal Service the way he is and days before an election. This is a time where weve seen so many norms trashed by this president , so many institutions attacked from our freedom of speech and journalists like you all the way to our own Intelligence Officers and so there is a credible belief out there by many folks in our government and elsewhere that we are at a point where our democracy is being stress tested like it never has before but as a person who grew up with two civil rights parents, i know about obstacles that have been placed to vote before. I know about the challenges that weve faced in having Fair Elections and so there may be dirty tricks from this president. Were already seeing it right now again with the post office but i learned from my parents and grandparents that obstacles will always be put up but our determination to surmount them is whats important so i hope americans are not deterred and press on in what is the most important election of our lifetime. It will define how this country moves forward, not only in the spirit of america, but our ability to manifest kindness and love for one another, but also issues that are affecting the entire planet like climate change. This is such an important election. We cannot allow any excuses to stop us from participating. Were just about out of time. Whats the number one point you want to make tonight . I think i want to talk to that heart and spirit of our country and remind us that patriotism is love of country and you cant love your country unless you love your fellow countrymen and women. That doesnt mean we always have to agree or even like each other, but we have to understand were all in this together and love is not sentimentality, but it means that were willing to stand up for each other, sacrifice for each other, to in many ways fight in this generation to do one of our greatest calls which is to put more indivisible back into our one nation under god. We have seen many more evacuations here overnight. Firefighters telling us that just one of the four groups of wildfires tripled in size in just one day destroying more than 100 homes, threatening 25,000 others. This morning, mountainsides now massive embers burning in california as wildfires ravage the golden state forcing thousands to evacuate in the dead of night. Time to go. Reporter families struggling to get out through thick plumes of smoke creating the worst air quality in the world blanketing the bay area. Thousands waking up to devastating scenes like this. 2,000 homes at napa at risk as a fire scorches more than 46,000 acres. You can see flames coming off of of it creating these fire whirls behind me here. Many residents barely making it out. It was like the entire wall of the forest was just coming at us down the road. My fatherinlaws house is down there. Im headed there next. Reporter evacuees waited for answers in the parking lot of a church just outside of a roadblock, hoping theyll have homes to come back to. Who would have thought 2020 would be like this . Its just insane. Reporter in santa cruz more than 20,000 people evacuated. Code 3 ambulance for burn injuries. Two victims en route. Reporter wednesday a firefighting helicopter crashing near fresno killing the pilot and sparking a new fire. Officials say that dozens of raging fires are burning into each other creating what they call complexes. There are now four of these complexes burning across the state supercharged by the weather with more than 10,000 lightning strikes causing multiple fires. Over the past 72 hours california has experienced historic lightning. Reporter and we keep hearing words like historic being used here. Those nearly 11,000 lightning strikes, firefighters say they led to more than 360 new fires. Cecilia . We are thinking of those firefighters and those families. Clayton, thank you so much. We turn to that breaking news. Just hours ago, a prominent rival to russian president Vladimir Putin was rushed to the hospital after falling sick on a flight to moscow suspected of being poisoned. Ian pannell joins us now with the latest on this, and we are talking about one of the most vocal antikremlin critics. Reporter yeah, thats right, good morning, cecilia. Alexi navalny is russias most outspoken opponent, and he is the biggest thorn in the side of Vladimir Putin. So as you would expect, this is sending shock waves across the country. What we understand is that the 44yearold was returning to moscow when he fell ill on the plane forcing it to make an Emergency Landing in siberia where he was then rushed to the hospital. You can see that in this social video. His spokeswoman thinks he was poisoned in a cup of tea he took at the airport. She says he didnt have anything else, although doctors havent yet quite confirmed this. Navalny is now in a coma and doctors say hes fighting for his life. He has been hospitalized before again with suspected poisoning. Hes been beaten up, arrested, attacked multiple times and we know a number of putin opponents have been poisoned in the past. The kremlin has always denied involvement but there are so many Unanswered Questions about what happened to him this morning, but its looking serious. Michael. A lot of Unanswered Questions indeed. Ian, thank you so much for that. Now were going to turn to the latest on the coronavirus emergency. The number of confirmed cases in the u. S. Topping 5. 5 million as a new Study Released overnight finds some asymptomatic children have higher levels of the virus than adults hospitalized. Whit johnson has the latest as schools struggle to reopen. Reporter this morning, new evidence that kids, even those without symptoms, could be helping to spread the pandemic. The journal of pediatrics publishing a study overnight, looking at nearly 200 children hospitalized or went to urgent care finding that they carried a viral load significantly higher than hospitalized adults. Researchers also implying that schools may have to focus on testing strategies instead of temperature checks because kids could have high levels of the virus while also being asymptomatic. There have been some studies to show that children from 10 to 19 can transmit to adults as easily as adults transmit to adults. Reporter in new york city, the Largest School district in the country, the Teachers Union sounding the alarm threatening legal action, demanding that schools have ppe, proper ventilation and require testing for students and teachers. This city went through hell and came back and we are not going back to hell because of shortsighted political agendas. Reporter in florida, the states largest Teachers Union suing to stop inperson learning as the state just recorded more than 10,000 deaths. Ive chosen my students over so many difficult things, but i cant put my family at risk. I will probably get this. Reporter one teacher in utah moving into his basement with his son for months, even installing a toilet as a distancing precaution for his highrisk daughter. How hard can it be . Youre just living like in a dorm room in your basement to have your family right there and yet untouchable. The employee was helping First Responders when this happened. Cal fire says more than 124,000 acres have burned. There is no containment. At least three people have been hurt because of the fire. Vacaville police said this morning that evacuation orders are still in place, but there have not been as many reports of intense fire activity overnight. The fire did jump over interstate 80 in fairfield. That created a major traffic issue as people tried to evacuate yesterday, however, interstate 80 is back open this morning. Now were going to go to santa cruz and san matteo county where the szu complex fire has exploded overnight. Now, its over 40,000 acres and again, no containment for this one. Right now, cal fire says three are threatened. At least 20 structures have been burned. Officials say to expect aggressive evacuation orders youre going to feel a difference when you step outside. Both men seen shoving each other just steps from the arena floor but after seeing this jarring moment, though, everyone is agreeing that it should have never happened. This morning, newly released video shows a sheriffs deputy aggressively pushing an nba Team President. It has a lot of people asking why . Please, please. Reporter attorneys for the Toronto Raptors president of operations masai ujiri shared this video saying it shows ujiri making his way to the court. Theres a new nba champion. Reporter to celebrate the raptors championship win last season against the golden state warriors. You can see a hand shove ujiri not once, but twice. Please, please. Reporter his legal team says the video is from the officers body cam footage showing ujiri reaching for his credentials before getting stopped and shoved by that officer who is sharing a different story. Sheriff Deputy Alan Strickland claims it was ujiri who injured him and that ujiri was the aggressor initially claiming that the Team President did not have proper credentials. Ujiri is considered the architect behind the raptors championship season and was asked about the altercation in the Postgame Press conference last year. Im going to respect what the process is there and the investigation and i am confident about who i am as a person, my character and as a human being. Reporter images that surfaced shortly after the incident and this new body cam footage show ujiri with what appeared to be credentials. A longer version of the exchange in security video appears to show ujiri attempting to walk past the officer, being shoved, then pushing back. Strickland filed a lawsuit in february claiming ujiri hit him in the face and chest with both fists. Attorneys say this hospital photo of strickland doesnt appear to show any obvious injury ujiris lawyers are filing a countersuit claiming the 11second encounter that he had with mr. Ujiri after game six is in all material respects a complete fabrication. And in a statement, the Toronto Raptors say the claims made against masai are baseless and are entirely without merit. Now, before the raptors game against the nets this wednesday coach nick nurse called the video disappointing adding in many instances theres a lot of flatout unkind behavior towards people. Cecilia. All right, adrienne, thank you so much. We get the latest on Lori Loughlin. Shes set to be sentenced tomorrow after she and her husband pleaded guilty to cheating to get their daughters into college. Prosecutors are arguing that loughlin should get two months behind bars, five for her husband and Deborah Roberts has the story, good morning, deb. Reporter good morning, george. Yeah, just three months after admitting they were part of that College Cheating scandal, Lori Loughlin and her husband are about 24 hours away from learning how much it will cost them behind bars. They cut a deal with prosecutors but a judge will have the final say. As Lori Loughlin waiting to learn her nate, the actress facing new questions about her daughters alleged involvement in the College Admissions scandal. In a new memo federal prosecutors accusing loughlin and Fashion Designer husband Mossimo Giannulli of allowing their children to become complicit in crime. That crime, paying 500,000 to consultant rick singer to get their daughters into usc. Hi, guys. Welcome back. Reporter prosecutors saying the couple instructed their younger daughter, social media darling olivia jade, how to conceal the scheme from her high school counselor, noting when their daughter asked whether she should list usc as her top Choice School loughlin replying yes but it might be a flag for the weasel to meddle. Giannulli using an expletive calling the counselor nosy. Loughlin accused of coaching her daughter not to say too much to her high schools legitimate College Counselor lest he catch on to their fraud. According to prosecutors, after the counselor learned olivia jade had been flagged as a recruit, he acknowledged a usc admissions official he had no knowledge of her involvement in crew and highly doubted on it based on her video blogging schedule. Giannulli confronting the counselor and aggressively asking why he was trying to ruin or get in the way of their opportunities. Prosecutors saying later that day the counselor emailed giannulli to say that he had advised usc that olivia jade is truly a coxswain. The government says giannulli was more active in the scheme while noting loughlin was fully complicit. The judge is going to do that and the judge will agree that this is an appropriate sentence for Lori Loughlin based on what she did. 60 days is almost exactly what youd expect the judge to impose. Reporter during a zoom Court Appearance in may the full house star pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, her husband admitting to one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud and Honest Services wire and mail fraud. Neither of their daughters have been charged. The judges recommendation the prosecutors recommendation is actually just that, a recommendation. The judge in this case could decide to go a little lower or even higher with those sentences, michael. Thank you, deborah. Well, because albany was impacted dramatically because of covid19, we wanted to basically just motivate not only our students, our teachers but our community. Its 2 000 when it came out. 20 years ive used my body to do my job in a very extreme way so i carry a lot of injuries from different films but im saying all of this without meaning to sound sad about it in any way. I dont regret any of those decisions but at 56, i do feel that on a daily basis. Obviously people will probably always and in a very good way associate you with the gladiator role and you obviously won an oscar for that role but i understand that you think you got too much credit for that, is that true . Ridley scott is an amazing director and, you know, i do think that you cant possibly give me an award for what i did in that movie unless you recognize the director because he set the tone of all of that. Are you not entertained . Now crowe take on a new role in unhinged using his old iconic lines to build excitement. My name is incidental. Looking for a prop and happened to walk past that helmet. I thought i would shoot something for my own amusement. They were like actually this is the way we need to do the film. Do not look at him. Reporter playing a man whose road rage has made him unhinged. Unhinged is about that normal everyday occurrence where you might have a slight disagreement with somebody about how traffic should flow while youre doing your daily commute. One person is willing to say theyre sorry and the other person is unwilling to match that. I dont have anything to apologize for, sir. I dont think thats really true of any of us, is it . It sets off a series of events which you just wouldnt have expected. I dont even think you really know what a bad day is. But youre gonna find out. I think the world has had so many bad days during these times and this is one of the first movies that some people will be able to return to the theaters to see. Are you excited about that . The new the lions of fifth avenue fittingly takes a look at americas Womens Movement from the struggle for voting rides to equality in the work place. Fiona davis is no strange story book buzz. Her newest novel, the lions of fifth avenue, already grabbing major attention including from gma. When you heard you were going to be the pick for the Gma Book Club, your reaction. I screamed. Reporter the bestselling writer known for historical fiction is at it again, this time with the majestic new york public library. Her story toggling between dual time lines, 1913 and 1993. The library a looming presence throughout. When it was built in 1911 it was the largest marble structure in america and 50,000 people visited it the very first day. Reporter the story exploring female empowerment with a look back at the unfolding Womens Movement, told through the eyes of two very different women. Laura in the 1910s is raising a family and lives in a library surrounded by all this knowledge but she feels stifled. She wants more out of life and then you have said di who in the 1990s is the curator for a special collection at the library called the bird collection which actually exists and sadie is a little out of step with her time where she loves vintage clothes. She loves old books. Reporter the two also related with dark family secrets between them. Family secret, was that something you intentionally wanted to explore. I think its interesting how families keep secrets over generations and how that affects later generations even if they might not have been in on the initial secret early on. Reporter theres also a breathless mystery involving book thefts of rare works, even a secret apartment tucked away in the lower floors of the library. This is the floor plan. The apartment actually existed. When you think of libraries and librarian, reserved, kind of quiet but yet this book is anything but that. Theres a lot of mystery, theres a lot of intrigue. Ive been to conventions of librarians and they are not all straightlaced. Let me make that clear. You know, for me it really is a love letter to libraries and the work that librarians do. Reporter so who bet story discuss the book than a librarian like alison who happens to be A Fiona Davis fan. What did you think of this book . The characters are so engaging and the fact that it spans two time periods in new york city, its so evocative of both of those times. Clearly were not in a time of meeting authors these days because of social distancing but what would you want to ask her . I think about this particular book. But actually why dont you actually ask her yourself. I love that library and i was so happy to spend so much time there in your book. Good. Thank you. How much time did you spend when you were writing this book in that library . I was so lucky in that i was able to get a behindthescenes tour. Thats part of the fun of writing a book is researching the location and it was such an incredible, incredible place. What a surprise, huh . Im very surprised. And thank you for being a librarian and everything you do to connect readers and authors, we so appreciate it. Well, the cool thing is that, you know, young talent got a chance to cross pollenate with the og talent, you know, so Wesley Snipes or, you know, seeing kat with ethan hawke, i think thaeks change of generational talent really elevates the film and it was really a pleasure like putting together my own acting wutang clan, you know what i mean .
