The new cdc forecast is predicting up to 200,000 coronavirus deaths in the United States by labor day and overnight california becoming the first state to surpass 600,000 cases. Just the past 24 hours now the United States reporting more than 56,000 new cases and 1,200 new deaths. Here in florida, there is a push from the top to reopen schools. The state is basically forcing one of the Largest School districts in the tampa area to reopen classrooms by the end of the month for inperson learning or risk losing more than 200 million in funding. This morning, the debate in schools rages on. [ crowd chanting ] for some that have already reopened, rapid setbacks. At least 2,400 students and staff quarantined across at least six states. But in states where inperson learning has not started, pushbash. Dozens of parents and students in pennsylvania gathering outside a local courthouse there urging officials to open schools. Rutgers football is one of those big ten sports thats been postponed this year because of the virus and when rutgers starts up its fall semester in a few weeks, hardly any classes will be held here in person. Across the country other colleges are starting to welcome back their students but the oncampus experience has changed a lot. College movein day is looking very different this year. Penn state is still prepping for its fall start ordering staggering amounts of ppe, 1. 5 million surgical masks, 33,000 bottles of Hand Sanitizer. But the university is under fire for asking its nearly 100,000 students to sign what critics are calling a liability agreement, reading in part, quote, i assume any and all risk of exposure to covid19 that may result from attending penn state and i acknowledge that exposure or infection may result in personal injury, illness, permanent disability or death. Penn state says that document was only meant to acknowledge the schools guidelines and has since changed the language telling abc news, it is not a legal agreement and was never intended as such. And now this new report this morning suggesting that the Cheesecake Factory, Outback Steakhouse and dennys are among the chains at risk of potential bankruptcy if their finances continue on the path that theyre on right now, which is one where its very difficult to make payments to keep up with those rental agreements. He is concerned that if more people vote by mail, it will hurt him and republicans in november. And now the president is threatening to block funds that the post office needs to help handle a surge in mailin ballots. It is sparking fierce backlash from democrats who say the president is putting his political interests ahead of the safety of voters. With the pandemic upending how americans cast their ballots, battle lines are being drawn over mailin voting. The president thursday openly admitting he wants to block funding for the post office to prevent expanded mailin voting. Something democrats are pushing for. They need that money in order to have the post office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots. Now, if we dont make a deal that means they dont get the money. That means they cant have universal mailin voting. They just cant have it. Reporter without evidence trump claims mailin voting leads to widespread voter fraud. But he also admits he fears expanding mailin voting will hurt republicans. The Biden Campaign accused trump of sabotaging the Postal Service to deprive americans of their fundamental right to vote safely. Pure trump. He doesnt want an election. Reporter then late yesterday, trump signaled he would be willing to make a deal saying he would sign legislation funding the Postal Service, just at a lower amount. You would sign something that does include funding . A separate thing, i would do it. But what are the reasons the post office needs that much money . They have all these millions of ballots coming in from nowhere. Reporter so the president who himself has voted by mail in the past does seem to be willing to negotiate here and the Postal Service says it does have the ability to handle and tackle the surge in mailin ballots. The question and the real concern is whether there will be any delays here and that is what additional funding could help prevent. Amy . Leaders on the right have distanced themselves from greene but after her victory this week, President Trump shared his congratulations to future republican star marjory taylorgreene. She isnt alone. A small but growing number of republican candidate was won their primaries share some of these beliefs. Qanon fans believe that or at least they act as though they believe that trump is the savior of the United States, and that they are helping him overturn this deep state plot. Want to turn to that incredible great white shark escape. An australian surfer surviving a horrific shark encounter by fighting off the predator with his surfboard after he was bitten. That surfer phil mummert says it came at him like a giant trash compacter snapping his board like it was a cracker, then biting into his leg. As you mentioned he used that remnant of his board to stuff into the sharks mouth before fellow surfers finally came in to rescue him. This morning, the surfer who fought off a shark with his bare hands and his board is out telling his story. Massive, massive shark sitting there right in front of me, like, one foot away, just staring at me. Reporter phil mummert was out surfing in Western Australia when a 16foot shark chomped through his board and into part of his leg. Knocking him into the water. I just grabbed that board with both hands and was shoving it into its mouth just trying to kind of hold it in there because i figured that if it was biting on that board then it wasnt biting on me. Reporter fellow surfers paddling furiously towards the thrashing shark and then i went straight to him, and everyone was going that way. By the time i got there, hes holding the nose of his board. He had that much of the nose of his board. Reporter the 28yearold geologist needed emergency surgery to stitch up the deep wounds on his leg. The injury on the same side of his body as a tattoo that phil has of a sharks jaw. After his rescuers paddled phil back to shore, a beachgoer clamped his hand on the wound for 30 minutes until help arrived. Phil had over 60 staples put in him, but somehow avoided significant damage. The result ended up being such a good outcome. It could have easily been a different story. Reporter and it might have been. Phil recently got to meet his rescuers and they did the surfer thing which is vow to all go surfing again as soon as phils leg heals up. Now, the fact is shark attack deaths are really uncommon. In fact, statistically you are more likely to be killed by a falling coconut than a shark. Amy . Okay. The biggest challenge is that our kids are not necessarily used to sitting in front of a computer listening to directions and then taking those directions and applying it for some higher level thinking. And now the mom of three sharing tips on how to help little ones get ready for a Virtual School day. Routine is number one and when youre a teacher, you spend that first full week of school just getting used to the new routine. Reporter part of that routine having a designated space for each child to learn even if its just the kitchen counter. You pick the purple bin . Yeah. Reporter she says its also helpful to have a place to keep each kids school materials. We love to use these colorful bins and they can put everything inside and going into this year we can think of these bins just as we pick out a new backpack or new lunch box. What happens at 8 00 . Science . Reporter little ones do best when they know what to expect. So she recommends going over their schedules with them ahead of time. Allowing them to visualize what the day is going to look like will really help them as well be more creative independent thinkers. Reporter when it comes to starting the school day, she says create a breakfast invitation. Putting out a simple learning game or task for the kids to do during breakfast. They can be manipulating and playing with toys and color sorting on their own to inspire creativity and it gave us a chance to connect. What that does, it lends them right into independent play. Reporter some of her favorites, sticker matching where you put matching stickers on a piece of paper and have your child draw a line connecting the identical ones. She says it encourages kids to learn how to hold a pen and look for details. She also plays find your name. Writing her childs name on a piece of paper with other words. By circling their name, the child learns Hand Movement and starts to talk about letters and words. Good options, but she says there is one thing every parent will need this fall.
